We had pre booked a week at Budle Bay with a mains hookup. Eventually we found the Managers with some help of friendly fellow campers. Manageress appeared pleasant and told us to go any where - so we pitched next to the river, which looks great and across from a field of sheep (lots and lots of them!). The mains hookup unit does not have circuit breakers in them! So we assumed that they tripped from a four ring system but never found the actual circuit breaker for our hook up.
Site should be fantastic but appears to be in a state of being run down. Grass is left long and is the type that irritates dogs paws, be warned. Cafe was shut all week during our visit. Lacking in refilling soap containers and general cleaning of toilet blocks - aged dirt in pipe work etc. Plate washing is outside and consists of two sinks with no rain cover. Those who have kids will find the tree swing great, however those without kids might find the noise of 4 year olds swinging and yelling like no tomorrow a little tiring at 10.30pm. Yes there is a 11pm no noise rule which is observed.
As a woman, I do like to keep fairly clean and tidy (even whilst camping!) and trotted off to the shower block (free). Good job it is free too for it was simply the worst shower block that I have ever been into in my whole life - one visit was once too often. The ground at the river side of the site is poorly drained and pretty bumpy. Power pegs struggled in a few places despite plenty of rain and soft ground.
Budle Bay is a fantastic location, the nearby beaches are some of the best in the country. St Cuthberts cave is worth a trip - a few miles inland. As is Holy Island, of course.
Conclusion. A reasonable no thrills budget site but do not have any pretensions about what to expect from the shower block or general cleanliness - because it is unfortunately run down compared to my previous visit when it was a top site.

Only had a short stay on this site but the weather was fantastic - not something we've had the pleasure of during camping for some time! We booked our pitch the previous day by telephone.
On arrival there was a notice stating you must book in before pitching but the reception was locked and a sign on the door gave a mobile number to ring. Unfortunately the mobile was switched off so we headed up the track towards what looked like the toilet block overlooking the site. We found the cafe next to it and there was a young girl inside who did not seem to know anything so we drove onto the site and decided where to pitch our tent.
At that point a man appeared (without any introduction) asking if he could help. There were no marked pitches but we wanted a hook up, he advised us to pitch our tent on high ground as the site floods in heavy rain. (yes we have done this before) We later discovered an emergency evacuation instruction sign near the reception, informing us that the site is built on a flood plain. Perhaps not the best spot for a campsite then? Anyway that was no problem the weather being glorious during our stay.
The site is in a beautiful spot and is only 10 minutes walk to unspoilt Budle Bay which is fantastic for birdwatching. The nearest shop and pubs are in Bamburgh and there are some smaller shops and a co-op in Seahouses. Plenty of fish and chip places there too but don't expect to get any in the evening as the latest they stay open til is 7pm. The coastline here is the major attraction as it is completely unspoilt and you can walk for miles along the beautiful beaches and sand dunes. Bamburgh castle makes a stunning backdrop as does the one on Holy Island. You can take a trip out on a boat to the Farne Islands from Seahouses harbour. In the summer it is a nationally important breeding site for our endangered seabirds and the sights and sounds of the nesting birds is fantastic. In the autumn you can go out to see the grey seal colony who come onto the islands to breed and give birth to their young.
The main problems with the campsite is that it is very run down and the facilities are not the best. It also helps if there is someone visible on site on arrival. I understand from a previous review on this particular site that planning permission was being sought for a new toilet/shower block. It definitely needs one. I noticed they had splashed out on a new reception. Perhaps the toilet/shower block should have been given priority? OK it is basic and I don't have a problem with that but it gave the overall impression that the owners cannot be bothered maintaining it. The showers which were around the back of the toilet block and both sexes shared, were not cleaned throughout our stay (one didn't work and in another the extractor fan was broken), the grass had grown long on the site, there were 3foot high thistles growing out of the drains from the water taps, some of the electric hook ups were broken and there were uneven slabs on the paths around the toilet/shower block so you had to watch where you put your feet. The ladies toilets appeared to be cleaned every day and there was a supply of toilet paper and liquid soap in the dispensers, can't comment on the standard of the mens. There were two washing up sinks outside and an extra one in the ladies toilets.
We tried to have breakfast in the cafe the following morning but there were no opening times displayed and no sign of life at 9am so we decided to go into Seahouses for something to eat. The same thing happened the next morning and when a queue appeared, someone had to go and find the warden to ask when the cafe was going to open up as there were people waiting.
It wasn't particularly busy throughout our stay so it was never a problem using the showers, they were of the push button variety and they were hot and free. The site seemed OK for families, there was a play area near reception and a tree swing near the toilet block. There is a small river running through the site which they could explore under supervision. It was pretty quiet during our stay on the campsite and it was mostly families on site with the exception of a group of older men sat outside a caravan in front of the toilet block, who started drinking alcohol at 7 o clock in the morning and had their barbecue smoking away all day. They were no trouble but it was a bit offputting. I don't know if the site normally allows large same sex groups but there was nothing to confirm what their policy is on this.
The tent tariff system was a bit strange: small tent, medium tent, large tent, compartment tent? We had a small compartment tent so which category does that fall into? Electric hook up was two pounds fifty pence per night which is about the going rate. We ended up being charged for a medium sized tent with hook up and two adults which came to 17.50 a night. For this price I would have expected a better standard and overall maintenance of the facilities.
To sum up: a basic site in a beautiful spot but spoilt by the lack of care and attention. I don't think we would choose this site again even if the facilities were improved, as we found the fact that it is on a flood plain a bit offputting in Britain's usual inclement weather.

Just got back from a short stay at this camp site. Jenny who greeted us was really friendly, and basically just said choose where you want, it only cost us £4.50 to pitch our large tent and then £5.00 per night per person, very reasonable. We chose a nice quiet spot just on the entrance to the site, beside the small play park. This was definitely the best spot, nice and quiet away from the main field, which was quite busy. We heard no noise at all from neighbouring tents / vans, and there seems to be a strict no noise after 11.00pm rule, although this was never an issue.
There is a small stream running through the park, with fields surrounding it, which does have sheep in it, but we never heard them.
The park has a small Cafe, where we got a great cooked breakfast for £3.00, nice and hot and freshly prepared.
The toilet/shower bloke is small and adequate, not the best I've been too, but definitely not the worst!
I thought the toilet floor was a bit dirty looking, but considering the weather, which was damp and misty, they were probably ok.
The showers were hot but the space was not great if you have small kids, as you can just about squeeze yourself in.
Plenty to do in surrounding areas, Bamburgh and Seahouses, we had wonderful Fish and Chips sitting in the harbour!
Overall we would go back to this site if only for the peace and quiet.

What a good site. Level grassy pitches with good access to hook ups. By the managers own admission site was somewhat run down by the previous owner and there appear to be what look like abandoned gypsy caravans dotted around. But don't let that put you off.
As the site wasn't booked up we had free reign where we pitched our tent as pitches aren't marked out.
The 'facilities' are 'basic' at best, but planning permission is being sought to build a new block. Once built this will be gem of a site. Must admit - took the family to Alnwick leisure centre for showers - 50p each!
Location is excellent. Well placed for all local attractions and touring the area.
Would really recommend. Location and friendliness by far outweigh the facilities. Expect this site be fantastic once upgraded.

We set off to Budle Bay on the first bank holiday of may. We were greeted by the most friendliest people you could ever wish to meet. We were shown are pitch and off we went.
- Practical Minded -
The pitches are on soft ground ideal for pegs. The pitches are near 4 socket hook-up pillars which are 10 amps I thing. The hook ups wasn't the best I saw myself going out to reset it about 5 times over 3 nights but that was probably my fault. Water points are near to pitches. Toilets and showers no comment.
- Location -
A beautiful site looking over Waren Mill. There is a river running through the site which is beautiful. The site is aprox 2.5 miles from bamburgh (not a good idea to walk it if your not a walker) and is about 10 miles from Bewick.
Overall a great site and would definitely return.

Me, my partner and our 6 year old son went to this site on 14th April for 2 nights. It is a lovely site, nothing fancy but it did the job. The Manager was really friendly on our arrival. There wasn't many tents pitched, so we had a great choice of where we could go. The weather was lovely which enhanced the look of the surroundings. The womens toilets were clean and there was plenty of them, my partner said the male toilets were a tad smelly (but aren't all male toilets?!). Our son loved the tree swings and I had a go myself, as did other adults campers! Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash, which was fine. A couple of dogs did get loose though, to which we heard the Manageress ( I think) shout 'Get that dog on a lead please'. Which is good, as you don't want dogs roaming around peeing up the side of your tent etc!. The on site cafe was open nearly all day, we didn't really need to take our camping stove/kettle etc as there was enough on the menu to satisfy anyones hunger or thirst. The prices are reasonable as well and our son got a decent portion of chips for 50p and a lovely cheese toastie for £1.50 (he didn't want the salad which went with it)! There's ample seating inside and sheltered seating outside to enjoy your food/drinks. We didn't notice an on-site shop so we went to a large Morrisons store in Berwick (follow the A1 north and look out for the MacDonalds sign on the right), which had everything we needed for the weekend and was about 10 - 15 minutes drive away. Theres's no pub/clubhouse on the site, which was fine by us. There's a 'small' park on site, which children didn't seem to bother with much as they preferred the tree swings at the other end of the site. There were electric hook up points here and there but I don't know if these were solely for caravanners or for use by campers! It's a very short walk to the bay which was just beautiful. Bamburgh Castle was about five minutes drive away and then to Seahouses was about another five minutes. The only noise we heard was someone playing music loudly out of their car in the afternoon but the sheep in a nearby field didn't shut up, which is expected of course! Other caravaners/campers were friendly, as were the staff in the cafe. Overall, we had a lovely time at Budle Bay Campsite and will definitely go again. Our son just wants a tree swing!

Just spent 5 great days at Budle bay. We were welcomed on to the site by Goerge and Jenny.Amenities were ok (not the hilton so don't expect luxury). Kids loved it and didnt even ask for the lap top. Park a bit water logged but that didn't dampen their enthusiasm

Just returned from Budle Bay where we had a great time. On a practical level, the site is fairly flat, quiet after 11pm, well situated for all the major attractions of the Northumberland coast and has all the facilities you could reasonably expect for the price. It is true that said facilities are a bit 'tired', but this is more than compensated for by the ambience. Slightly chaotic and old-fashioned, but who wants to be too regimented on a camping trip?
The managers, George and Jenny, were more than helpful, and it seems that with a bit of advance notice they will open up the site cafe for a great value full English - much to the amusement of the European contingent. And if George has been out fishing, fresh fish for the evening bbq.
An old-fashioned camping experience, in the best sense of the word!

We've just come back from a stay at this campsite and would definitely recommend it!
As previous comments, the toilet and shower blocks were a bit old and shabby, however, they were clean and always had loo roll! There are only 3 showers so best to get there earlyish to avoid the morning rush with kiddies etc.
This is a very family-friendly campsite with what seemed to be a cute play area. And the swings from the trees were used a lot - by kids and adults!
We camped right next to the wee river and the only noise we had was from the chattering birds.
There was apparently noise problems from the other side of the site the evening before but that had been dealt with by the owners quite quickly and efficiently.
The lady at reception (owner?)was very friendly and quite helpful.
We didn't see any pubs nearby, but we weren't really looking. The beach is about a 2 minute walk away from the site.

We stayed for one night all 12 of us and all thought it was great. Kids loved it as they could go down by river with their nets, they also loved the swings from the trees (so did we haha)
Owners were very friendly and helpful and I thought the price was reasonable.
The toilet blocks were shabby and old but the actual toilets were clean and we just took our own soap which was no bother.
We thought it was a lot better that what we expected after some of the reviews we had read we will be back !
