We’d been told this area was lovely by friends so decided to take our new tent for it’s first outing and after some research we found Dowards Park campsite and it sounded just the sort of place we were looking for, the reviews on UKCampsite.co.uk & Trip Advisor sold it to us.
We telephoned to book and within a few days received the confirmation and usual T’s & C’s. A couple of days before arrival we contacted the owner who kindly said if we arrived early we could pitch up as it was a quiet time of year. Upon arrival we were made to feel very welcome and given a brief overview of the layout of the site. We had a lovely pitch and really like that cars are only allowed on to pitch up/pack down. All the facilities were very clean and just as described on the website, all the pitches we well maintained and the whole site was very clean and tidy.
We’d read comments about lots of rules / signs and yes there are rules and some signage with do’s / don’ts and info but nothing excessive and frankly it’s them that help maintain the appeal and tranquillity of the site which helps attract the more considerate camper. It was refreshing not to have an open plan field and they way the site was landscaped and laid out made it feel quite private and was appealing. The peace and quiet was fantastic and it was refreshing to have quiet time from 10pm which was monitored by the owners.
We wanted a base for walking and exploring and couldn’t have picked better. The area was beautiful, picturesque with a huge array of birds & wildlife.
We will definitely return. Thanks for a lovely stay.

This was the first site that we camped on three years ago. Why did it take us three years to return? I have no idea.
The site hasn't changed at all and I would highly recommend it.
Someone mentioned that this site seems to attract the more considerate campers - I would second that comment.
The Spar shop nearby seemed to us to be expensive and poorly stocked. A short car ride into Monmouth was a better option. A Lidle and Waitrose available.
For a day out, if you have the slightest interest in birds of prey, the International Centre for Birds of Prey in Newent is recommended. They fly the birds three times a day (weather permitting) and some stunning action is guaranteed.
This is definitely one of our favourite sites.

Booked on location and strong UKCampsite reviews, didn't disappoint. Booked two pitches together with another couple with hookup, very spacious, picnic bench was very handy, toilets clean and tidy and wash room was too, never had to wait.
Location is really good for walking as you can walk all over the Doward and down to the Wye, cross over the footbridge or the rope ferry then come back over doward side and find your way back up to the campsite by one of the many paths, lots of cliffs and caves to have a little look, there's deer too. Kayaked from Ross to Symonds Yat, was excellent.
Campsite is well setup and pitches aren't overcrowded, kept tidy and cars only in the carpark is great, lovely forest clearing setting.
Nice places nearby.
Would visit again :)

Secluded, quiet campsite in the woods above Symmonds Yat. Shady pitches, which was just what was needed in this heatwave. Small shop with essential supplies, although the only essential we purchased was ice cream. It's a steep walk down to the river, and quite easy to get lost in the woods on the way, but the scenery is quite outstanding. Great for walking, climbing and canoeing.
Nice to have use of a freezer for ice packs and you can charge your mobile in the site office. Only a couple of showers in the men's block, but didn't have to queue even so.

Really enjoyed our stay at this site, which seems to attract a considerate type of camper - a peaceful site generally, even with the presence of children, and quiet after lights out.
Location is stunning, with some fantastic walking straight from the site.
A pretty campsite, but not in a regimented way. Love that you leave the car in the car park - it's really close still, but no cars driving around the site except to pitch/strike.
Although on top of a hill (so all comments about going home being uphill are true), very well sheltered against wind by trees and hedges. Groups of pitches separated by well planned planting, so site feels smaller than it is.
Under cover washing up facilities were good, with added bonus of freezer for ice blocks. Toilets and showers were more than adequate and kept very clean, but perhaps due a bit of a spruce up?
Would happily recommend this site, and hope to visit again.

Pretty site in gorgeous area. Lots of great pubs and wonderful woodland walks - be prepared, though - when you leave the campsite, everything is down hill, meaning that on the way back, at the end of a long day's hiking, 'home' is back UP hill!
Showers, washing up and toilets clean and well kept. The reception/store closed earlier than the sign said it would, but not a huge deal. The only thing that spoiled our weekend was not the owners' fault, but rather the delightful family group behind us that decided 6:00 am was a perfectly reasonable time for they and their screeching children to be up, running about, yelling and hollering, disturbing the rest of the campsite.

We are just back from a 6 night stay on this campsite.
Site was lovely, the pitches are a really good size and I really liked the fact that you had to park your car in the carpark (which is less then a minute away from your tent).
The owners are lovely and really helpful, there are some really great walks to do in the area.
If you want to get away from normal every day life and just sit back and relax I would recommend this site as its very laid back.
The ice pack freezer is great and works!

Just arrived back from Doward. Lovely area with lots of walks. Map given by the campsite to direct you to two pubs was unclear and we became lost in the car.
The pitch was nice and roomy but we had to park our car in the car park.
Toilets and showers are ok but you are given a code to enter the shower block. I kept losing the code which was my own fault but it was a pain to keep putting the code in.
Absolutely no plugs sockets in the showers or toilets to use straighteners or hairdryer.
One hairdryer is attached to the wall for the cost of 20p.
We have been to many campsites and this is the first one that does not provide at least one socket.

A lovely clean and well run campsite set in a wonderful location. The owner lives on site and encourages campers to act responsibly to ensure all visitors enjoy their stay. The free use of the freezer for refreezing ice packs and deckboards for the tent entrance in wet weather were appreciated.
Campers are asked to park their car in the carpark after pitching their tent which adds to the tranquil feeling of the tree lined and hedge screened site. The site shop is well stocked, with coffee available as well as cold drinks.
The site is located on the edge of an ancient wood with several tracks and paths to explore. Symonds Yat rock is certainly worth a visit on a clear day to see the views of the Wye valley from 500 feet.
Two circular river Wye bank walks are available from the campsite by crossing the Biblins bridge and using the ferry crossing at Symonds Yat, or walking to Monmouth and crossing the river to return on the opposite bank.
We will revisit this site again when we return to the Wye valley.

After spending the first week of our camping holiday in a very wet Wales we arrived at Dowards and were delighted to find this beautifully kept site. The pitch we were given was perfect and the sun came out! Alison was very friendly with plenty of local knowledge which came in very useful.
We managed a walk down to the suspension bridge and along to the Saracens Head. It was meant to be a circular stroll but the fact that the boat going to the other side of the river was out of action( due to the river being in flood)we just retraced our steps.
Unfortunately the weather turned nasty again after two days but Alison recommended a visit to Ross on Wye and Monmouth. Both lovely towns with plenty of interesting shops. Also on the recommendation list was the Wye Knott Inn, Alison did say that if we ordered food there may be a chance that the landlord would give a lift back if required. Dave (Landlord) was very friendly, food great and we also got to watch a football match on the TV. Dave did drive us back for which we were very grateful!
We ended up leaving a few days early but this was not anything to do with the site or surrounding area. It was purely down to the weather!
Will definitely return and highly recommend.
