My husband and I stayed at Doward Park Thursday until Tuesday and although the site does get far busier at weekends it is till small enough and the pitches are large enough for you to barely notice, the site was then much quieter on weekdays. The showers/toilets etc are basic but fine, the shop is small but still seems to sell everything you need, you can also charge your electrical goods in the shop/reception free of charge if you do not have a pitch with electric hook up, the reception has all the local information you need as well as free maps of the Doward. We both really loved the site and its location is fantastic, there is so much to explore on the Doward itself, King Arthurs Caves nearby (5 mins walk) are a must, we also cycled down to the Wye and along the riverside to Symonds Yat 2. 5miles, you can also cycle to Monmouth which is around 6miles form the site, again along the river, its a very picturesque route!

The site it 5 miles drive from Monmouth, 7 miles from Coleford, 9miles from Ross and 13 miles from the Forest of Dean cycle centre. We found the amenities at Monmouth the best with plenty of pubs, restaurants etc and a large Waitrose.

Would definitely stay here again and recommend it for families and couples alike

Well-organised, neat and quiet little camp site situated on high ground.

Great walk down to a couple of good pubs on the River Wye, where we had an excellent meal in the Saracens Head and took a canoe out for a paddle, but you need to be pretty fit to get yourself back up the hill!

Toilet and shower facilities clean and no queues. A freezer in the washing up area for ice packs. The amenities list states laundry facilities, but this is a service wash rather than a washing machine.

Ross on Wye is lovely and definitely worth a visit. Also a walk or drive up Symonds Yat to see the birds or just admire the view of the River Wye is a good thing to do.

I would definitely go back to this site.

We booked this site at fairly short notice and were pleased to find there was space for us and two other couples with us (3 tents). We had pitches 1, 2 and 3 which are right near the carpark and we were allowed to park on pitch 1 and 3 anyway.

On this site you can only park your car for unpacking and packing up, and are not allowed any extra canvas e. G. Gazebos

The site is small and surrounded by woodland, at the top of a steep track down to the river, gates are shut at 10pm, but you can come and go as you please.

BBQ's are allowed (which is a criteria we look for when camping), and there is a small shop run by the owner which sells essentials (milk, eggs, bacon etc).

The showers are free, clean and hot, with no queues and a hairdryer in the ladies which takes 20ps to operate (you'll probably need 40-60p to get your hair dry each time).

Plenty to do in and around the site, We rented the bikes from the site and went down the track, over the bridge and into Monmouth and back, very good cycling for anybody to try.

We also rented Canadian canoes from Symonds Yat for the day and were dropped off up river in Ross-on-Wye some 15 miles away -an all day activity paddling back to Symonds Yat. It was a brilliant day out and I can definitely recommend doing this.

There seems to be lots of rules, but all in all a well run site and we will definitely be back at some point.

WATCH OUT FOR THE THIEVING SQUIRRELS!

Just returned from spending 2 nights at this lovely campsite.

As others have stated, don't trust your sat nav. The road up to the campsite is also very narrow.

The site is lovely and well kept. Pitches are large and with the hedges feel very secluded.

I can imagine this site gets very busy at weekend and holidays. But for a midweek break, there were only two other couples camping. Which meant the site was lovely and quiet - just the sounds of the birds.

There is only 2 showers each for men and women. The annoying push type of shower that seem to last 5 seconds, but it was lovely and warm.

We walked down to symonds yat to the Saracens Head Inn. The bar staff are lovely and very helpful - we also tested the famous hand ferry.

The food in the pub was good but a bit pricey.

There is plenty to do here, canoeing, walking, climbing, biking.

Bikes can also be hired from the campsite.

My husband didn't want to leave this site, we will defo return.

Plenty of other reviews have commented on this site's lovely location and I can only agree with them. It really is a beautiful spot, and its small size makes for a really peaceful stay. This was helped by considerate campers - it was pretty much silent apart from low conversations by 10pm and not much noise apart from the birds before 8am.

We had a pitch near the entrance to Bluebell Wood so there were a few kids back and forth but I suspect less 'passing trade' than on most of the site.

Despite being full there was rarely a queue for any of the facilities and the toilets, showers and washing-up areas were all spotlessly clean. My only suggestion would be to add shower curtains across the cubicles to help keep your clean clothes dry!

The walk down to the River Wye is lovely, but back up is. Challenging, unless you are pretty fit. It's 200m vertical ascent over a couple of miles (mostly in the first mile or so). We were ready for our lunch when we got back!

It's probably not the cheapest site around (bank holiday pitch with EHU was £20/night) but good value given the high standards.

As others have said, don't follow your Sat Nav! The lane in the directions is narrow enough (and I can see why they don't accept towed caravans) and care is needed to avoid both oncoming traffic and wildlife.

We have just returned from a wonderful three day stay at this site - helped by the fantastic hot weather!

The site is situated amongst beautiful scenery and is a pleasure to visit. We had our two boys with us, aged four and six, who loved the small wooded area - the site seemed full of young children, so maybe not ideal for couples or those wanting a quiet break, but perfect for families.

The showers and washing up area is newly refurbished and a joy to use - we never had to wait for long and everyone was really respectful of the facilities so they were always left clean and ready to use.

A freezer for ice packs is available, and the small shop useful for maps and info about the local area. The pitches were well spaced and the grounds well looked after - overall a wonderful site, we didn't want to leave.

We have just returned from a 10-day stay at this lovely little campsite with our two children (aged 14 and 12) and dog.

On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the owner, given a brief rundown of the facilities and shown a map of the site with the location of our pitch. The weather had been quite wet and some of the pitch was muddy but this was covered by our tent and was not a problem. We were also given duckboards to use at the entrance to the tent which is a brilliant way of keeping the mud out of the tent.

The pitches are all clearly marked and ours was separated from our neighbours by low hedges which made it feel nicely secluded. There is a decent road running around the campsite but once unloaded, cars are parked in the carpark at the site entrance which means there is very little traffic on site.

The site itself was kept very clean and tidy with plenty of bins to dispose of any rubbish. The facilities are good and were generally clean and tidy. At busy times of the day you may have to queue for the showers or washing up area but never for more than a few minutes. Hot water in the showers is always available (and free), the hot water for washing up sometimes runs out and takes about 10 minutes to reheat but this only happens at very busy times when a lot of water has been used in a short space of time.

There is a good sized freezer for ice blocks, this was pretty full during our stay and it helped to have a brightly coloured bag to put the iceblocks in (makes it a lot easier to find them in the depths of the freezer!).

The children's play area is a fenced-off section of the woods which surround the site, our children loved playing on the rope swing and the play area seemed popular with the other children on site.

The shop is open for several hours a day and sells a small range of groceries plus some camping supplies. They also sell icecreams and hot drinks. In a foyer outside the shop (open all day and late into the evening) there was some excellent tourist information, maps, up-to-date weather forecasts and info about local pubs, takeaways etc.

The owner and other staff on site were very knowledgeable about the area and always happy to help with any questions.

One thing which we discovered was that there was no Vodafone mobile phone reception at all on the site, although I saw a couple of other campers talking on their mobiles so other networks may be okay. Once offsite we had good signal strength in the other places we visited.

There is a Spar/petrol station within 5 minutes drive which sells a wider range of food and other supplies, there are larger supermarkets in nearby Monmouth and Ross-on-Wye.

There are several nice walks from the site, through the woods and down to the river. Remember to keep some energy in reserve for the climb back up though! We particularly enjoyed walking down to the suspension bridge at Biblins, then along the river at Symonds Yat East, before taking the rope ferry back across to Ye Olde Ferrie Inn and walking back up to the site. There was also a nice short walk if you turn right out of the campsite and over a stile which takes you through woodland which has some interesting sculptures by a local artist - giant beetles and butterflies can be found if you look carefully.

There are loads of things to do in the local area, we did something different every day and were never bored. Our favourite was hiring canoes and paddling from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat West, even the dog loved it - especially when she jumped out of the canoe and had an impromptu swim!

All in all we had an enjoyable stay and our children declared the holiday '9 out of 10'.

We have just returned form 10 nights in this well maintained and idyllic site.

Small and perfectly formed.

As previously mentioned shower blocks a little dated but they worked and were clean and I never had to queue and there are only 2! and the park was full!

Kids played in the wood and made some great friends.

The walks around are stunning and some are challenging but hey we weren't in a hurry so just took our time.

We also popped across the border into wales to visit some great places the big pit in bleanevon, where you can go and see what it like for the miners and even get to go down it~! and its free!

There is so much to do you have trouble deciding which to do first.

We did the canoeing thing but I have to say I wont be repeating it!

Weather was a little unpredictable but on the whole it was good.Until the last 2 days. Though the rain didn't really stop us doing anything as it wasn't cold.

So on the whole a great site situated on various borders giving you lots of choice.

Will be back.

Had a fantastic 3 night break at this great little site in early August. 6 adults, 5 children and 2 dogs in 3 tents. Plenty of room around reserved pitches and fairly quiet at night thanks to mostly considerate campers.

Toilet facilities were basic but adequate and clean - never had to queue for a shower and always hot water. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The local area was beautiful - great walk down the hill from the site, across the rope bridge and along the river to Symonds Yat with great pubs on each side.

The extra effort to climb up to Symonds Yat Rock was well worth the effort. Also spent a brilliant half day canoeing from Ross to Symonds Yat - peaceful, stunning views and great fun. Indian takeaway back at site from Mizbah in Monmouth was also excellent.

Happy to recommend this site and area to anyone and would definitely come again.

Stayed in July at this lovely little site. Very suitable for families, our 5 year old loved the fenced off wood complete with 'den' to play in and made lots of new friends. The owner was very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area. We walked, canoed, visited the Butterfly farm at Symonds Yat and miniature railway at Coleford.

Plenty of space on site with separate car park which really made a difference and added to the 'in the forest' experience. The site provides wooden duckboards for when it's wet and you can also hire a picnic bench if you need to.

Showers and washing up area were always very clean. I was impressed by the 20p a go hairdryer in the ladies showers, something not even the bigger sites usually have.

We ate out at the Saracens Head at Symonds Yat (gastropub style food), lovely if you fancy a treat and it's too wet to bbq. Also had a fab curry at Mizbah in Monmouth.
