We arrived in the drizzle after being lucky with weather for the most part of our weeks trip in Wales and the Forest of dean.
Small but very well run and kept site, great facilities all clean as a whistle and in a quiet location.
Idealy situated near to the woodland trail and walks in the area, but there is a downside.
The website for the campsite makes you think it is near to the river for canoes etc. It is not. It is a good downhill, steep and lengthy ramble through the woods to the riverside, where you cannot launch canoes etc anyway, unless you walk a long way further up river and use the Old Ferrie Inn pub's car park.
They provide a drawn map which is useful, but fails to mention the fact there is no way over to the other side of the river to where the views are to be had too, unless you go downhill to Biblins, where, apparently, there is a suspension bridge. I asked about cycling and at no stage was told to cycle to Biblinsto get the bridge and there is no way you can cycle through the woods trails.
We left a day early as after a few hours trudging back up the side of the valley to get to the van, we decided we might as well go as we could not do that again (my knees and the wifes arthritis)
Its a shame, as if we had been told to cycle to Biblins and there was a bridge there, we could have cycled to Monmouth etc. There are ferries that cross but one was sunk and the other looked out of use, so no way to cross the river on foot for miles.
I do not want to appear to just be moaning, but it was important information for us as cycling we can go for hours but walking, up steep slopes etc, is not possible for us for extended periods. Had we known about the cycle options to Biblins as opposed to the route shown to me on the map, it may have been a better stay.
Don't get me wrong, its stunning around the area, the site is great, just bear in mind the above.
Forget your own canoe unless you drive to launch, as this site is certainly not a short walk to the river.
We liked it here in many ways, just more accuracy of information and a less misleading website would work well.

We have just returned from 3 night stay and had a fantastic time. The facilities on the site are excellent and kept clean. The water was always hot and did not have to queue for anything.
The shop on site sells a fair range of things you might need including some consumable camping equipment.
The surrounding area is outstanding with beautiful woodland walks right on your doorstep.
There's some lovely pubs in Symonds Yat with real ale and great food. You can hire canoes and cycles from their if you prefer an action packed stay or you could just sit outside your tent and enjoy the sunshine and birds singing.
We will definitely return.

It doesn't really get much better, £13 for 2 of us in a motorhome for one night, ok it was during the low season and without hookup. My van is 21 foot long and didn't have any problems getting to the site just took care as the road narrows in places and followed the signs. I would recommend taking the track down to Biblins and then across the bridge to either Symonds Yat or Monmouth but save enough energy to get back up the hill! Much nice than the more commercial sites down near the river. I would think that in the busy season booking is essential.

A very well organised campsite on the top of the hill above the wye with easy access down to Symonds Yat.
They have designated pitches which are generous especially as you leave the car in a car park once you have setup making the camping area not only feel more open but also safer for children.
It has it`s own children's play area in the woods and the showers and loos were all well looked after.
The Doward has a network of lanes which almost all lead (sooner or later) to Symonds Yat. For an almost traffic free walk, turn left out of the campsite and follow it around to the left which will soon turn into just a signposted path. It`s about 30mins down to the Wye and 2 pubs. The office on the site has maps.
There are disused quarries close to the campsite so familiarise yourself with the immediate area before letting your dog off the lead - our spaniel is stupid enough to run off a cliff!
Would definitely go back.

We spent a week over the Easter period, Campsite was fairly busy but never had to wait for facilities, water always hot but shower block could have done with some heating.
Site was kept very clean and tidy and units(mainly tents) had plenty of space, the hard standing for our motorhome was perfect level and sheltered.
We took advantage of our bus passes with trips to Ross and Monmouth( they allow dogs on the bus).
In all a very well run site in a beautiful area plenty of pleasant walks.
My only small criticism is the charge of £1. 00 per night for dogs, there is no designated dog walk or dog waste bin.

Spent 2 nights here. This site has a lovely feeling of peace and tranquillity and is a beautiful spot, feels like a good old fashioned campsite.
The facilities are fine, showers basic but ok. You can have a service wash if required and there is a dryer available.
The wood for the children was fantastic, they loved it.
We walked to symonds yat over the suspension bridge and then back across the man powered ferry. The next day we cycled to Monmouth which is a pleasant town.
Enjoyed our stay and would have liked to stay longer but it was booked up.

We spent 5 nights at this lovely quiet 'away from it all' campsite - all the noise you hear are the birds singing. The pitches are large and with the hedges feel very secluded.
As other reviews have stated the road up to the campsite is very narrow and winding, and the sat nav wants to take you up an even worse route! - so don't follow it.
There are only 2 showers each for men and women. The annoying push type of shower that seem to last 5 seconds, but they are adequate as are the toilets. There are 2 sinks for washing up located in a room in the toilet/shower building.
We took our bikes and cycled to Symonds Yat which is beautiful, along the disused train track and then back in the other direction to Monmouth where there is a Lidl's supermarket which seems to be the nearest shop.
There are plenty of lovely walks around the area and you can also hire bikes from the site.

We had been trying to book this particular bank Holiday week for years - we actually booked in March this year to make sure! We were not disappointed.
This is a good, friendly, site. Good spacing between pitches and all the facilities you need, with small camp shop and plenty of information around the area.
Free mobile charging and coolbox freezing was refreshing change from those sites which charge.
Children around us seemed content and well behaved. Plenty of dogs on site also.
Toilets/showers clean and adequate.
Site is easy to find although care required on narrow road.
You need strong tent pegs as rock is not far below the surface.
Shops in Ross (Morrisons/Sainsburys) or Monmouth (Waitrose/M&S/Co-op/Lidl.
Good pubs nearby in Symonds Yat East & West. Saracens is so busy it seems to have forgotten customers want service and consistency of food. Old Ferrie tries harder and deserves to be busier. The Wye Knot does not exactly shout a welcome, but we did not try this one.
Canoe hire from both pub sites. Bike hire on site.
Would visit again, but for a shorter stay - 2/3 days.

Just returned home from our 5 nights stay at this small, friendly campsite, owner very welcoming. The site is child friendly, private wooded area for the children to explore and great tyre swing.
The shop on site sells basic essentials and packed with leaflets of things to do.
Marked pitches generous in size, and the fact that once you have unloaded your car it is parked in the car park making it safe for children to run around.
Shower/toilet/utility room basic kept clean (a bit annoying that you have to keep pushing the tap to get water).
Enjoyed walk down to the river about 20 mins down from campsite, save energy for walk back (steep hill) up to campsite.
Dogs welcomed need to be kept on leash. Would we camp here again, absolutely a little gem.

A brilliant little site set in a quiet area and as other people have said IGNORE your sat nav! Roads to the site are narrow with ALOT of blind bends, great care is needed.
It is a well laid out site with plenty of space, even when full. The amenities on site are clean, tidy and modern. Showers always hot, which is a bonus. The shop on site has all the basics you may need and well priced, plenty of leaflets and maps for things to do in the surrounding areas and weather forecast pinned up. The staff on site offer a friendly welcome and always approachable. Kids have their little play area in the woods which is a nice touch, gets them off their psp's!
Walks are good but, be warned coming back is all uphill.
Unlike a lot of sites my family have visited, the owner has thought of the little details i. E constant hot water, deck boards for your tent entrance in bad weather and so on. Little details make a difference.
There is plenty of wildlife around and about from birds of various kinds (inc birds of prey) to rabbits sitting outside the tent just sitting there while my Wife and Son photographed!
All in all I can heartily recommend this site and give it 10/10. It is well priced for the standard of this site, it is a credit to the owner.
If I had one little niggle it would be the shower. A curtain between the shower and the bench would be a good addition. Save clothes getting wet. I learnt that one!
