This was our second outing to Budemeadows having enjoyed a fortnight there the previous year.

Some of the previous reviews mention the unfriendly welcome from the staff & the endless rules & regulations but this is not something we have experienced from either of our visits. Indeed, our decision to return again this year was partly based on the friendliness & helpfulness of the staff. Yes, there are rules but these are not unreasonable & certainly in line with other sites we have stayed on.

As per last year, we were greeted in a really friendly manner, shown to our pitch & a couple of the wardens helped us manoeuvre our caravan as they allowed us to position it lengthways against the rear of the pitch.

The facilities on this site, in my opinion, are great. There are plenty of toilets, the showers are always hot & everything is very clean. There are soap dispensers at each sink & even a dish cloth on a hook for wiping around the sink after use. There are a couple of hand driers & even a hair drier in the gents block.

We always used the main block as it was opposite our pitch so I cannot comment on the toilet block in the rear field.

We didn’t use the bar or the take-away food facility, so I can’t really comment on that, suffice to say, they were both fairly popular in the evenings.

The on site shop is also extremely well stocked, although you couldn’t get a daily newspaper (short drive down to Widemouth bay).

There is a very good play area that is fairly well equipped – even a zip-wire!

The swimming pool is a nice bonus & we spent quite a few evenings sat around it whilst our ten year old practised for the 2016 Olympics!

There is also a small outdoor games area with giant connect 4, giant chess/draughts, skittles & table tennis. There is also an indoor games area, so there is plenty for the youngsters to do in the evenings.

The surrounding area to Budemeadows is also very attractive. Widemouth beach is a mile down the road & Bude is about 3 miles up the A39, both beaches extremely popular with surfers.

Other places well worth visiting are Clovelly, Port Isaac, Tintagel, Padstow & Bideford.

Also worth mentioning is the canal walk from Marhamchurch to bude. The walk is around 2 miles & there is a small parking area by the side of the canal in Marhamchurch.

On the downside, there had been a lot of rain throughout the season & a lot of the pitches were waterlogged, although I understand 2012 has been the wettest summer for a century!

Whilst the staff had supplied boards & sand for some of the worse affected, a lot of the pitches were extremely muddy.

However, this certainly would not put us off going to this great campsite again & we are already choosing our pitch for next year!

Great site greeted and walked to pitch, plenty of space for our 6 man tent

Small toilet block a bit dated but kept very clean with private toilet and wash basins

Showers had lots of room

Washing up area was adequate

Large toilet block painted like beach huts which my daughter loved, again kept very clean.

Shop had lots of useful things but no daily papers

Playground was good and was well used by my daughter. Had things for all ages. There was also a games room with pool table, outdoor chess/ draughts board which was great lots to do also outdoor pool which is heated.

Grumpy petes was an added bonus could get a local beer or cider. There was a small room with board games in.

Also internet acess if needed and take away food cooked to order.

Overall a great site well maintained very clean in a great location although I could hear road at night. Beaches at Bude and Widemouth bay very close by.

We visited Budemeadows during the second week of the school summer holidays and thought it was great as a base for exploring the surrounding area, The site is located on the 'Atlantic Highway' and is accessible from most major routes.

Upon checking in, I didn't get a great first impression as I was read my rights rather than given a warm welcome and felt the need to apologise when asked if my tent had a breathable or sewn-in groundsheet and I answered sewn-in!

We were shown to our pitch by a nice young lady who blatantly read a script to us from a card (she may have been new to be fair) and we were left to set up. The pitches aren't a bad size but I thought it a bit much that we had to pay £2 per night extra just so that we could have 2 pitches together (we went with friends), to add, they are not the biggest pitches we have had.

Although this has stared off sounding negative the site is really quite nice, the pool and play area are great for kids and there were some nice touches such as the takeaway (quite reasonable and not bad grub either) and on site bar (where the staff were a lot more friendly) It was a bit of a novelty for us to finish dinner and walk down to the bar for a nightcap. The games room came in handy for wet play and the little rom at the back of the bar has lots of board games to keep kids happy.

The showers were adequate and quite clean, although the main block is a little dated and looking quite tired in places, the secondary block isn't really big enough to cope with the amount of people pitched on the other field where we were and on a few occasions we had to walk up to the main block to use the toilet/shower, the problem, as stated before, is that there are only 2 toilets with sinks inside them and 2 separate showers, it would have been nice to have separate sinks for teeth cleaning etc. I thought £4 for a load of washing on a 30 min wash was quite steep so bear this in mind if you have dirty kids like ours!

The site is well kept and maintained to a high standard and the pitches are laid out and individual which is a nice touch.

We had a problem with road noise on a few of the nights as the site is so close to the main road, although on the quieter nights it was nice to hear the sound of the waves crashing into the shore, Widemouth bay is only a mile away and is great for surfing and body boarding as is Bude which is a beautiful town and very appealing, I can recommend the Brendon arms pub for good food and a great atmosphere, Elements is a really well located Italian restaurant and again had great food and stunning views of the sea and sunset

All in all this site has one of the best locations that I have seen as there is so much to see and do in the area, I just didn't get that 'personal touch' that I do from other sites that we visit, the site (in my opinion) is a little expensive for what you actually get for your money and it would be nice to see the main characters around the site more often talking to their customers, I would definitely recommend this site to families as it does have everything you need for a great holiday.

Budemeadows is located right by the busy A39 'Atlantic Highway', so road noise is ever present. But easy driving distance from lots of lovely beaches, include Bude, Widemouth Bay and Crackington Haven. It's isolated from other civilisation, so no chance of walking to an offsite shop or pub.

Facilities here are fantastic - plentiful toilets (some with basins in the cubicle) with loo roll, soap and hand dryers provided. Lots of free hot showers, really well designed so you can keep your clothes dry while having a shower. Plenty of washing up sinks and a well-equipped laundry room (two washing machines, two dryers and a sink for hand washing).

There is an outdoor heated paddling pool and swimming pool, which the children loved, even in the rain! No lifeguard, so parents have to be present, and in the pool for under-eights (not so good in the rain). Giant games of chess, Connect Four, table tennis and skittles were all fun, and there was a well-equipped playground with zipwire.

Really nice, reasonably-priced takeaway, with delicious chips and little pizzas, as well as some lovely non-chip-related dishes of the day (amongst many other options), and you can eat in the bar if you've had enough of squeezing into your tent on a rainy evening.

However, lots of rules, probably sensible, but some of which we have never come across before, so not the freedom you sometimes experience when camping. For example: 'We require breathable groundsheets' (modern tents have groundsheets built in anyway, so there's not a lot we could have done about it if it was wrong); 'Park to the left and put your tent to the right of your pitch' (probably something to do with firebreaks, but not explicitly stated and not something we've seen before); 'Don't keep a bin on your pitch' (as it attracts wildlife); 'Don't tie washing lines to trees'.

And the reason we won't ever go back there - the ground is really poor draining. After only a couple of rainy days the route to our tent doorway became a squelchy quagmire, and muddy water even seeped in through the groundsheet in a few places (so it must have been a breathable one!).

This really ruined the end of our stay, and it was most annoying that the rules and signs suggested that this was *our* fault for not letting the ground dry out enough during dry spells -- the open ground didn't dry out either, so the problem was nothing to do with groundsheets.

We've never had this problem on other sites, and Budemeadows would do well to look at any possibilities for improving the soil drainage for the future.

This was our 3 rd visit this year, always short visits. We love this site it's big & open which gives great open views.

Best play park we have come across not just in touring sites but better than most parks !

The toilets & showers are always clean & hot with lots of space but could do with more hooks. Shop sales most things & there is a cafe, which I can not comment on as I have never used.

On one of my visits this year we had Gale force winds & the wardens checked on every one to check they were ok & that everything was secure.

The wardens are friendly & helpful. They have a mini bus which we have used in the past & will take you & pick you up from Bude or Widemouth for a donation.

We know take van (7m) to Widemouth & park in car park right on the beach for £5 for the day. We will be going back for another weekend this year. Recommend

We booked at Budemeadows because of the good reviews. However, we have very mixed feelings regarding this camp site. On arrival, we were greeted by the most grumpy person who then made sarcastic comments as we missed the turning to our allotted pitch and had to turn on the grass. We are normally two quite happy 60 year olds but he did put a damper on things (as well as the weather)! There is no dog walking area and we walked through the camp site to the lay-by outside the park and walked our dogs there.

The good points are that the pitches are nicely laid out in cul-de-sacs and the toilet and shower facilities are excellent. In fact, probably the best showers we have experienced in our camping and caravan history. However, don't try to shower before 7. 30 a. M. As there is no hot water and twice I had to return to the caravan to wait for the hot water to be turned on.

The road noise has been mentioned on other reviews and if you require peace and quiet, free from traffic noise then this is not the site for you. We visit Bude every year and absolutely love the area but will not be staying on this site again. Sorry.
Management response: We don't normally respond to reviews, but thought we ought to add a few words following Tecumseh's post from July.

We're normally a happy smiley bunch here at Budemeadows so our apologies to Tecumseh for not being so when they arrived.

Hot water is always available in our main toilet blocks, our boilers heat the water instantly on demand and are on 24 hours a day. However when they have not been used for some time, such as first thing in the morning, it can take a while for the hot water to get from the boiler to the shower head. The key thing that we'd stress to anyone who stays with us, is to tell us if they have any problems so that we can do our best to put things right.

Our apologies again to Tecumseh if we were less than welcoming, we hope you'll reconsider and visit us again next time you are in Bude.

Having based the booking of our summer holiday largely on the reviews on this website, we had high expectations that the pilgrimage down to Budemeadows in Cornwall would be well worthwhile. Holiday over, we left with mixed feelings. The welcome we received on arrival was luke warm at best, but we put this down to us misreading the signals and thought no more of it. However, as our stay continued it became clear that people skills / friendliness were not a strong point of all the staff.

That said, we felt the facilities were generally good, very clean, great park for the kids, pool great and showers always hot (although pressure not as good at bottom block). We felt the bar prices were a little steep, and the takeaway food van was a bit motorway services standard. Bude is a delightful little town and the local beaches are great (sea pool especially good for little ones).

Special mention goes to the older guys who drive the tractors round emptying bins etc - by far the most friendly staff, always open to having a chat and a joke.

Overall this is a well run site with very acceptable facilities, but as a small business owner, I know that a smile and some friendly interaction cost nothing. Except repeat business.

We spent a week here in June (' adults and 2 young children). Excellent location and we were in the far field so we could not hear a car on the road. The toilets and showers in the far field are excellent, very clean and loads of space in the shower area.

Pool was great, the kids loved it and it was really warm which was a pleasant surprise.

Take away food and bar are excellent.

Pitches were reasonably large.

Kids loved the play area, nice place for a game of football or just to let them run around.

Have to make a comment on the rules, there are maybe a few more rules than other places but they are all the usual rules. I think what makes people (including ourselves) think there are too many rules is that there are signs up everywhere telling you these rules. For example if you stand outside the reception and look around in that little area, there are loads of little signs, many of them the same sign (no smoking). But because there are so many you feel they are constantly watching you.

BUT I would certainly come again, it was well run and a very good family run feel to it.

We were also there the week there were gale force winds and rain, we hope to arrive to better weather next year :)

This site is really great, it is well laid out and the trees and hedges provide shelter from the wind or shade if it is sunny. The way the site is divided means that it doesn't feel like camping in a big open field, but the pitches are large with well kept grass

Reception is very helpful and provided good advice when I was trying to book for 7 various units.

While we were there, a notice appeared outside reception warning of 60mph gusts of wind which enabled everyone to put on storm straps and extra guy ropes. (yes, we did all survive the winds!)

The children (age range 1 to 13) used the swimming pool several times and it is heated sufficiently that they didn't get cold. They also used the play area a lot, there seemed to be something there for all ages.

The shop is small but stocks quite a lot, but there are 2 supermarkets in Bude only 3 miles away. We only used the bar once as it was quite small.

The toilets are clean and I think they have just been repainted. There were often queues due to the fact that the toilet and basin were in the same cubicle. The showers were hot and the toilet block itself was always warm. The facilities near the shop had a better arrangement of toilets and basins but not so many showers.

Widemouth beach is very close and good for rockpools and there were lots of surfers too.

We would definitely go there again, hopefully with less wind and more sun! All of our group said they would go again

We probably lost all senses we had left and decided go camp in our very basic tent in Cornwall for new years eve. We looked on ukcampsite website for a site that might be open for new year - not really expecting to find any - and noticed budemeadows was open year round. Great.

Booking was very easy. We enquired via email first to make sure they were open and did have space available and then followed up with a phone call to book and pay for the pitch.

We require to be near to the facilities due to one of the parties limited mobility and Budemeadows were very helpful in answering any queries we had and accommodating our needs. Once the pitch was booked and paid for - £12. 50 for 2 adults, 2 dogs, one tent and one car for one night - the proprietors sent us out booking confirmation and detailed directions to the site (with 3 route options depending on if you wanted the shorter more complicated route or a route which is longer but uses main roads as opposed to lanes, etc).

On arrival you pull up to security barriers and have to leave the car to go in to reception to 'check in' where you are told your pitch number and given info on the site and local area; including where the local supermarkets are and of course the site rules which are pretty obvious and reasonable - no noise after 11pm, speed limit of 5mph on site, dogs on lead, no unattended children in the pool that sort of thing.

The pitch we had been assigned was completely waterlogged and so we were offered several alternatives and shown these to see which we though best. All pitches were wet; after all it was the last day of December and we have had some pretty heavy and persistent rain lately. But having made a decision on where we thought best to set up; we were left to get settled in.

The ground in predominantly clay and like I said was very wet but surprisingly; the pegs were not only easy to get in the ground they also stayed in the ground through some pretty intense winds during our stay. We decided to go off site for a couple of hours to get some food (and get out of the wind which was trying its hardest to uproot the tent - I wasn't certain it would still be standing when we returned). Unfortunately whilst we were off site we had some heavy rain and the tent wasn't as waterproof as I had imagined so we returned to muddy puddles and a slippy-slidey pitch (obviously not Budemeadows fault though).

Although we only stayed one night I had plenty of opportunity to try out the showers and launderette washing the mud off myself and drying out my clothes -first when we arrived after a walk in the rain with the dogs and again in the morning when I realised my coat was soaked from the rain that got in to the tent overnight.

Showers - spacious, hot (but easily temp controlled), clean (quite an achievement given the weather). 2 cubicles in women's and men's toilets. Separate individual showers at the back but these weren't open in winter PLUS a wetroom in the disabled/family bathroom AND a separate fullsize bath. Hair driers mounted on the wall for use. All included in the price and unlimited usage. No rushing to wash your hair and rinse the soap out before the water cuts off.

Toilets/wash facilities - Again clean, hot water. Several cubicles with both WC and sink plus other cubicles which just had the WC with the sinks outside as you would find them in a public bathroom. Hand driers.

Launderette - 2 large washing machines and 2 huge tumble driers. Didn't use the washers but they seemed reasonably priced. The tumble driers were (I think) £1 for 10 mins which is again a good price. Especially considering you don't pay for anything else.

Washing up facility - Large room, plenty of sinks to easily avoid a queue when the site in busy (and inside which I've never seen before - its normally a bowl of water outside the bathrooms at other sites I've stayed at. ) Bring own washing liquid.

Other facilities - Plenty of bins plus recycling bins. Taps for your drinking water. Chemical disposal points and grey water disposal points.

In high and mid season the site also benefits from having a swimming pool, shop, bar and games room. Plus an ourdoor play park and games area with giant chess, table tennis, etc. It also (again in season) sales food and drink to eat in or take away.

Plenty of leaflets, info packs in reception on all the local areas, taxi companies, take away menus, pubs, restaurants, etc.

Nearby to local attractions- cinema, soft play, swimming pool with flumes, bowling, plenty of beaches, surf school, fishing, rock climbing, etc. Short drive from major tourist attractions country parks, zoo's, museums. Near to port Isaac, Bodmin Moor, and other major towns.

Bar in wifi enabled, no min stay rules on site and you can arrive/leave any day of the week so don't have to stick to traditional sat - sat or mon - fri/ fri - mon holidays.

Great location, friendly staff, great facilities on site especially in peak season, fantastic prices. Lovely area. Got to give the site 5 out of 5. The weekend 4 out of 5 because of the sheer amount of wind and mud but I didn't expect sun at the end of December. We will be back I'm sure when the weathers warmer and drier. Thanks for a lovely weekend.
