We spent 6 nights here at the end of April, despite only intending to stay for 3, as the site was excellent, the scenery magnificent, the weather incredibly good, the walking superb and the wardens very pleasant.
This was our first visit to Arran and we would definitely return, if only to stay at this site. We were blessed with dry sunny weather, albeit rather windy and cold for most of our stay, so we walked a lot including a climb to the summit of Goatfell and the awesome Cock of Arran circuit, which can be done straight from the site.
Admittedly, for April, temperatures were very low but we found the site was in a bit of a wind tunnel. The pot wash area was in a very draughty spot so wind chill made the washing up even more of a chore than usual.
4 shower cubicles didn't seem enough for the size of the site but we never had to queue so, maybe, it's not a problem.
We can't comment on the wet ground because we arrived during a dry spell.
We can't comment on the midges because we didn't see any. But, that's what we expected in April.
The free Wifi, DVDs to borrow f. O. C, the lounge and the microwave were unexpected bonuses, as was the free putting which we didn't use.
At £27 a night, we thought it was a tad expensive so were, therefore, a little miffed at having to pay £4 to use the washing machine. But, this is to be expected where there is no competition - as far as we know, it's the only site for miles. During a 5 week tour of Arran, Scotland and the Lakes we paid an average of £20. 89 a night for an electric hook up pitch, and an average of £2. 25 to use an on site launderette. Having said that, we didn't put up the awning at all of the other sites and the facilities at Lochranza were spotlessly clean and a pleasure to use. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. The fee can't have bothered us that much because we stayed for 6 nights.
We didn't visit the distillery or eat out because we are dog owners. We did have a drink at the outrageously expensive hotel (£5. 55 for a pint of beer and half a pint of soda and lime) so we didn't bother to have a meal or go back.
However, Arran is kind to the motorist - we didn't pay car park once during our 9 days on the island. So, it's swings and roundabouts.
We saw red deer, a red squirrel and a golden eagle whilst staying here, as well as a male black redstart in the village. Arran is a perfect location if you like birdwatching, with fabulous sea birds such as black guillemot and eider.
In summary, we would definitely recommend this site and would consider a detour to it if we were ever near Arran, for the views and the customer service.

This is my favourite site and location ever! We were greeted very warmly by Carol and Alan and shown to a lovely pitch overlooking the golf course. This site has everything you could possibly desire. The location is simply stunning and the site is surrounded by hills on 3 sides. Immaculate showers and toilets, a superb laundry room with an extremely handy ironing board and iron.
The base camp common room is comfortable and has lots of local information about the area and bus and ferry timetables. It was the attention to detail and thought which impressed me so much.
There is a lovely walk from the site around the shore and up the cliff path with stunning views over to Bute. We saw grey seals basking on the rocks. From dusk until dawn the red deer graze on the golf course and were only feet away from our van. Saw so many young stags - they were fun to watch. In the morning the golf course is cleared of any deer mess. Wifi is good at the base camp and sometimes stretched as far as our van.
TV signal was non existent but that wasn't a problem. Phone signal was good. The Stag's Pavilion Restaurant next to the site was also superb. We booked 3 weeks before to make sure we got in as they are fully booked every evening. The Lochranza Hotel is nothing special but you can walk or get the bus to another pub in Catacol. The bus service on Arran is excellent and takes you all around the island. I could go on forever about this site and Arran.
I am only sorry that we were only there for 3 days however we will definitely return. Lochranza is a charming fishing village. Thank you to Carol, Alan, Nigel and Kathy we will return.

Site has amazing views. Free wifi at the base camp and a small pay per wash laundry facility.
The site calls itself a quiet site. However we were woken every morning at 6am by campers talking and constantly slamming car doors whilst packing up. We were even treated to a motorbike running for five minutes after the owner had set the alarm off.
The price (£32) a night was pretty steep especially when we were had our daily early alarm call.

Arrived to a very warm welcome very accommodating to our needs and choice of pitch as we had two dogs and decent sized tent.
The toilet and shower block were kept spotless all the time we were there (week) this was a bonus as we usually wild camp. The facilities on site were basic but all clean and good working order. The site was well organised even when a large party of Duke of Edinburgh Kids arrived besides us which we were notified of in advance but had no problems with at all infact they were very pleasant.
The park wardens were always on hand to assist and advise as needed (Lovely Couple) nothing was to much trouble even when we asked to stay on an extra couple of days. We Arrived in the middle of the rutting season and was a joy to have the Red Dear on site and close by.
We also used the near by Lochranza Hotel for several Nights for a meal and found it very friendly and accommodating in letting the dogs in with us, food was excellent and good value. All in All we had a great time and will be back

The site is idyllic albeit fairly wet under foot. The local wildlife (red deer) are certainly in abundance as they walk through the site, which was a bit of a worry as it was well into rutting season and the males were pretty protective, we were a little uneasy letting the kids have a free run about.
The site for me was tired and a little expensive. As previously described there are no shops in the local village closest is Brodick, 11 miles away so you do need to stock up.

Management response: Now it's the end of our season we would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to post a review this year.
Our 'tired' reception building has now gone and is being replaced by a new building that has brand new laundry facilities, a new shower room for disabled people and a new campers' room. It is being built by the company who provided our attractive washrooms three seasons ago.
Lochranza is designated deer forest and the deer were here first! We love the magnificence of the spectacle of the rut on the golf course. Now it's all over for another year and the deer have headed back to the hills.
The nearest village shop to Lochranza is a traditional village shop, selling a bit of everything, at Pirnmill 7 miles away. The Arran Distillery across the road from us sells fresh bread and milk. Other food choices in the village are: a café, a restaurant, a hotel with a public bar and a sandwich shop in the village.
We hope you enjoy a warm and cosy winter. |

Without doubt the best site we've used. This is why we were back for the third year in a row. And this year we had fantastic weather - apart from the day the lightning hit the distillery (but even that gave us something to remember.
The site is set in the most beautiful location, surrounded by hills and just a short walk from the loch and Castle. The aforementioned distillery is about 400 yards from the site and has a lovely café. Within a mile is the Sandwich Station near the ferry to Claonaig (well worth a trip - as a foot passenger it's about £5). There are no end of beautiful walks - and if your not sure just ask Nigel or Kathy they are the nicest and most friendly wardens we have met.
The site is immaculate and well managed - on arrival Nigel directed us to a dry pitch (not easy as I think we had the only two dry weeks the West of Scotland had this summer. The showers we're always clean and tidy with plenty of hot water. We made plenty of use of the golf course and putting green attached to the site.
There is plenty of information in the lounge area regarding walks, things to see and do and as mentioned before it's well worth a chat with Nigel and Kathy - incredibly nice people who will share their local knowledge and recommend the best things to do.
Our three year old border collie loved her holiday too - she tried to be on her best behaviour on site but loved running around the hills on our walks.
We did need our midgie cream this year but this was a minor inconvenience given the glorious weather we had.
Just to prove how good this was - our 16 year old, shopping loving daughter is already planning our visit for next year.
To summarise - in terms of location, value for money, cleanliness and the staff this site is as good as it gets. Thanks again Nigel and Kathy!

Well! - where to start. Whether you enjoy great walks, a quite outstanding visit to one of the finest whisky distilleries in Scotland, the prospect of a round of golf only disturbed by the herds of deer that meet to graze, or the prospect of reliable Golden Eagle sitings, This is the place to stay.
We were greeted by totally professional, friendly care-taker managers - not that you would have known. The site is quite delightful and there is an excellent on-site restaurant as well.
We loved it - and wished we had booked a longer stay.
Don't miss it!

Only stayed here for one night before catching an early ferry to Kintyre. Arrived early due to bad weather and owner very helpful and accommodating and let us pitch up. Easy to book online and pay in advance as needed. Torrential rain meant the site was very wet, although dried up well by the next day.
We had a grass pitch as we were a small van but ended up with vans very close either side so not much of our own space. Wouldnt really have had room to use pull out awning if we wanted to, although this may have been due to problems with water logged pitches. Had the river running behind us which was lovely to listen to.
Good showers and toilets which were kept really clean despite the rain, although had to wait for showers. Covered washing up area and laundry area. There was a restaurant just outside the gate, although this was closed while we were there. Easy walk to the distillery for tours, shop and cafe, although we just popped in.
We walked down to Lochranza by road - very pretty and saw lots of deer on the green on the way. Also walked through the golf course in the evening to get a close up look at the free roaming deer and enjoy views at dusk. Convenient site for ferry in summer, although you need to get to the port early as its a very small ferry!

Fantastic site. Made so welcome by Nigel and Kathy. Kept a pitch by the toilet especially for me (disabled due to MS). Second visit but will certainly go back again. Great place for moving on to Kintyre. Site very clean and truly beautiful. Kathy now selling my books by Jessie Macquarrie, great read for anyone who loves Scotland, caravaning, wildlife, scenery etc. Thanks for another great stay.

We arrived here for a 3 night stay after 4 nights in Lamlash and it couldn't have been more different. The site is set in a magnificent spot at the head of the loch surrounded by towering hills and by a lovely burn. The drive from Brodick is worth it in itself for views of the majestic scenery. Unfortunately the weather was wet and wild and some tents had suffered.
We were warmly welcomed by the owner, everything was very well organised and we were quickly shown to an excellent hard standing with power and water right next to the toilet block- modern clean and well appointed (although no privacy cubicles or family room). There is a campers lounge full of information, a fridge, kettle and a microwave- useful if you are camping and a good laundry and drying room.
On our last night we ran out of gas. Luckily we could buy a refilled bottle at a reasonable price.
We had been told previously that the on site restaurant 'The Stag' was very good and were warned to prebook. Unfortunately we didn't take the advice so couldn't get in but the aromas were wonderful and we plan to return.
Lochranza is small and quiet but in a superb location with a ferry to Kintyre, good walking, good bus service, excellent sandwich and icecream shop and deer and sheep a plenty. We didn't see a golden eagle this time but hope to on our next visit.
