After ten years we rejoined the C&C club so that we could get a good deal for this campsite, knowing that generally the club sites are usually pretty good. Well I have to say for a southern coastal holiday type site I couldn't fault it.
On arrival at the site we were impressed with the reception area and well stocked shop as well as a great area with huge amounts of local information.
Finding the pitch was easy and helped by individual markers. From pretty much anywhere on the site it has spectacular views over the coast. We found that the toilet / shower and washing up facilities were modern and always clean. Even when the site was very busy there was no waiting time for the showers and the water was always hot.
From the site Woolacombe beach was a 10 minute drive. If you take the quick route it will take you through the centre and to the busy esplanade area, £7 for parking and very very busy. If you want a quieter part of the beach try driving the back way into the town from Challacombe hill and turn left into Marine drive. The parking is a little cheaper and you can park along the road where you cut across the dunes straight onto the quiet area of the beach.
There was good food shopping in Ilfracombe (15mins from campsite) and some smaller supermarkets in Woolacombe. If you are a runner there are some great paths from the site straight down onto the coastal path with some serious hills (try running down into Lee and up onto the other side and back, only about 5 miles but a good 1100ft climb)
After reading some of the other reviews we were a bit worried about the wind, but we only had one severe night where we had to batten down the hatches. We didn't see any damage to any tents though.
On the whole a first class site, if I had one negative it would be the layout for tents. The site does seem predominantly caravans and mobile homes, and tents seem to be sited in the bottom field totally surrounded by caravans. Once the site got busier the tent pitches are in rows with tents to the front rear and sides. There was space between for car access but you did lose the view and it did feel a little regimented and hemmed in. Also there seemed to be water points on the caravan hard standings but there didn't seem to be many water points for the tents and there was a bit of a walk.

Just spent an idyllic three nights here - absolutely fabulous site - generous hard standing pitches - views to die for, great facilities in s perfect location - as previous reviews will note it is an exposed spot on top of the hill, but as the temperature was scorchio, the wind was very welcome ! the staff are friendly and efficient without being over the top. The walk over fields into Mortehoe is a delight and it, s a nice village with three pubs serving good food, we had fish and chips from the mobile van on site and they were excellent. So nice to stay on a peaceful site, so lovely and quiet at night, doggy heaven with two on site walks to choose from, and all the coastal paths around, we walked into Woolacoombe which is a delightful half an hour walk, try to avoid walking the main road as it is a very busy. All in all I would not hesitate to recommend this site and cannot wait to return.

Just returned from this lovely site. Nice friendly staff weather was really hot still the last two nights were windy had to wind in our canopy at 2am as I thought it might not be there in the morning pitch was a hard standing and plenty of room. The facilities are excellent and spotless clean. There is a fish and chip van that comes around on a Monday night a change from cooking. When we left we saw a sign go up that a seafood van was calling on a Tuesday maybe it is just for peak times all in all an excellent site hope to return soon.

We have been camping in the area for around 20 years, starting off at Easewell Farm, and then changing to Damage Barton when Easewell was taken over and became too commercialised for our taste. To be honest we are 'Damagephiles' and have camped there for the last 10 years, normally at least once a year. We have camped in frame tents, little two man tents, trailer tents and more recently in a caravan. In fact, it was the destruction of the awning and frame of our trailer tent in gale force winds at Damage Barton in May 2008 which pursuaded us to sell the trailer tent and invest in a caravan. We havent looked back since ! The facilities are absolutely superb. The main toilet block benefits from underfloor heating and is always kept spotlessly clean. The Lethbridge family who own the site are very friendly, and I can honestly say that despite the bad weather we have encountered, we have never had a bad holiday, and this is largely down to the site facilities and the hard work of the owners. When I asked my daughter what she was most looking forward to about her holiday in north Devon, she replied - 'the showers at Damage Barton - they are much better than ours at home. ' This is sad - but true ! There are some lovely beaches and fantastic surfing / kayaking at Woolacome, Croyde and Putsborough, and nice villages such as Mortehoe for a cream tea. If you are feeling energetic, get dropped off in Woolacombe and walk or jog along the beach to Putsborough - its a lovely walk / run on the sand at low tide, or along the coastal path accessed through the National Trust car park. Braunton and the Tarka trail arent too far away, and we enjoy the occasional evening wandering around Ilfracombes shops and the harbour. Lynton and Lynmouth are also well worth a visit, not least for the Victorian water powered lift which connects the two towns. Not far from the campsite is a well equipped caravan / camping / sailing shop at Mullacott Cross (on the industrial estate) and on the site itself is a very well equipped shop with a small bakery and a very friendly / accomodating shop owner. I can only echo some of the previous comments that, in terms of facilities, and perhaps location (when its sunny) this has got to rank amongst the top two or three campsites I've had the pleasure to stay at.

This site is split between the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club who share the excellent site facilities.
We booked a Caravan Club pitch and the views from our caravan were excellent.
The site shop was the best we have seen, and a really slick and professional service was on offer.
Local buses could be caught from just outside the site entrance, so access to the towns of Morthoe, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe was easily gained. Lots of walks and footpaths for the more energetic which were well signposted.
Reception was welcoming and efficient and staff were keen to help their visitors make the most of their stay.
Would go there again.

This was our first visit to this site. Part C. C. And part C. & C. C.
Previous posts have mentioned how windy it is here. Well I can tell you it's as windy as a very windy place. We managed to pick the week of extreme cold as well.
However that's not the fault of the site. We liked Damage Barton very much. The view from the site is superb. It's very clean, tidy and well maintained. Every day during our stay staff could be seen doing bits and pieces to vacant pitches. The site is sloped so they have landscaped it into tiers but all the pitches are level.
This site appears to be independently owned. One surprise is no lighting at all at night on roads and pathways. You will need a torch but this is not a major problem.
The staff here are very welcoming and helpful but you may find you have been allocated a pitch prior to your arrival. This may be open to negotiation if it's not too busy.
Although there were very few units on site I had the impression that pitches may be a bit close together. Otherwise the owners seemed to have built a good site. There are two toilet blocks, one is a bit old now and will be rebuilt. The newer one is excellent. Absolutely massive amounts of room. The individual showers are extremely roomy with new shower heads giving gallons of hot water. Even the lavatory stalls are big. The owners seemed to have built it to a good spec rather than built down to a price. You'll see the difference when you look at the washing-up rooms.
There is an excellent shop on site which sells lots of stuff including newspapers, bacon, sausages and tinned stuff. Opens for business at 0800 and the guy who runs it is very helpful.
There are several walks from the site and the shop sells some good local maps made by a local man.
There is a bus stop just outside the gates with timetables available in the site. Can't tell you much about these as we didn't use them but we did go for several of the walks direct from the site which were lovely.
There is a large area set aside for playing with a separate field for kite flying. Also a dog walk
A look at a map show lots of seaside towns to visit with some quite amazing beaches.
Please don't be put off by the negative weather comments, you'll miss a treat.
All in all a good above average site. We shall go back when the weather is a bit kinder.
You can even hear the sea-lions a night.

We have just returned from 7 nights at this site.
The site itself was pleasant enough with huge pitches and we felt very spoilt as we had our own tap on our pitch. What we weren't prepared for was the wind!
This site is exceptionally windy and open to the elements, I would recommend either not putting an awning up at all or making sure you have extra storm straps and pegs as they will be needed. We sadly saw many awnings brought down and poles snapped.
The showers were very poor with dreadful water pressure so we ended up showering in our van. The shop is well stocked and the cakes are fab. There is also a huge selection of wheat & gluten free foods inc cakes, sausages, burgers, sausage rolls for those that need them.
There are good dog walking areas around the site and the walk from the site to Mortehoe is lovely and the pub is a welcome sight if you walk to the lighthouse first !

Spent 14 nights here and would not hesitate to recommend it. I would summarise the good points:
1. Beautiful location, well laid out spacious pitches with great views out over the Channel to Wales. Close to some excellent beaches and only a short drive to Ilfracombe.
2. Spotless showers/toilets/laundry and washing up area.
3. Well stocked on site shop (sells nice fresh bread and scones). Tesco and Lidl in Ilfracombe with the nearest Sainsburys at Barnstaple.
4. Pretty village at Mortehoe has 3 pubs, fish and chip shop, village store and Post Office. The Scarecrow Festival weekend was great fun and well attended, as was the Museum Bar-b-que in the evening.
Negatives:
1. The site has a policy of reducing light pollution and you will need a powerful torch to get about at night. It's pitch black.
2. TV signal very much hit and miss but mobile wi fi worked well as did our phones.
3. Unlike most C&CC sites, as this one is independently owned/operated, child rates only apply up to age 16, not the usual 18.
4. Water pressure in the shower blocks was poor sometimes and the shower reduced to a trickle.
5. The approach road from Turnpike Cross is very narrow with passing places and can be a tight squeeze when towing a van.
The weather could have been kinder to us (rain and/or thick fog) but we still enjoyed our stay. The location is what makes it and what negatives I have listed were only minor niggles really. Overall 8/10.

Beautiful site, friendly staff, fantastic facilities, great shop. But. OMG the weather! Having read other reviews, I was ready for it to be windy. Windy does not begin to describe what it was! Hurricane force more like! If it is like this in August, I can't begin to imagine how awful it can be at other times of the year. We left early as we spent most of the time terrified that our caravan would blow (or be washed) away. We were on grass, and it was like mush as there was so much rain, so everything was covered in mud. There was no opportunity to sit outside because you would have needed to peg yourself down! However beautiful the site and the surrounding area are, I will never go back. I need a holiday to get over the stress now!

Visited during very wet June! Greeted at reception by friendly ladies and given large hardstanding with great views of sea. Well drained site.
We had a lot of wet windy days but the bus stops outside the site to Ilfracombe, Barnstaple and further afield. Our bikes stayed on the back as the road is a bit scary for us oaps!
The walks are lovely, might be a bit challenging for the less mobile. Very well kept, the staff were out in all weathers with their shears! Toilet block immaculate and warm!
Well stocked shop, good for dogs, plenty room for children's play.
