Small, quiet, good all round site!
This is quite a sloping campsite but we had no problems pitching our tent on flat ground, we were at the bottom of a slope and even after heavy rain on one of the days we had no problems with any water gathering or boggy ground, the tent was also very dry underneath the following day packing up.
Very clean site with spotless showers and toilet block
Good size pot wash area with hot water!
The Village of Hawkshead is a 5min walk and is beautiful, small supermarket and good pubs!
Bus service from there into Ambleside and Winderemere
Great site which we will be returning to

This was our second stay at this campsite and again it was wonderfully peaceful having the off the beaten track feel. Toilets and showers are provided in the form of portacabins and although the showers are small they are adequate and free.
The adjoining open sided barn contains the washing-up area with plenty of very hot water. A washing machine or more importantly a drier or dry room would be a welcome addition during the bad weather spells but the lack of these is not a massive problem.
The site itself is quite sloping in places so pitch placement may need some careful thought. We have been lucky so far and managed to find a flat spot both times. The atmosphere reflects the fact that it is a family site with the only noise coming from either the children playing or the local wildlife, both of which seem to know the camp rules and go quiet at 11pm with the exception of an owl.
There is no need to pack an alarm clock either as the local curlew will give you an alarm call at about 7am. All in all we love this site for its friendly owners, slightly wild feel and its location in relation to the surrounding fells and places of interest.
Hawkshead is a 10 minute walk away and Conniston and Ambleside a 10 minute drive, all of which fulfil any provision needs and make great starting points for a days walking or biking.
As for eating out, if you have children, we honestly can't speak highly enough of 'The Sun Inn'. Its a very family orientated inn with reasonable prices, quality ales and the landlady and staff treat the kids like royalty with colouring in books, games, free squash and even allowing them a picture opportunity pulling a pint.
In conclusion if you are looking for a well priced family camping holiday that offers peace and tranquillity with the option of lots of attractions nearby this is the place to stay.

Amazingly, was able to book only 1 day in advance during peak season. Beautiful site with great views, and easy walk/cycle into Hawkshead in the morning for warm croissants.
Very laid back atmosphere, and charmingly underdeveloped site, just find a spot that's not in anyone's way, and pitch up.
It was very wet (unusually so even for the lakes) and it was very muddy. We were convinced the van was going to get stuck in the mud, but it never did.
After a few days we ran out of dry clothing, but the owners suggested we use the washers and driers in their caravan site down the road.
It's the kind of undeveloped place we used to camp in as teenagers, but it worked really well with the kids.
Within cycling distance of Ambleside, Coniston, Grizedale forest (and the tree top adventure trail there) we had a fantastic holiday despite the weather.
Only problem was gas - nearest in Coniston or Ambleside.

We stayed here with a group of friends (all with children) in August. The field is very sloping, we couldn't find a flat spot which would accommodate all our tents together (5 tents). Also, the field was very boggy and it hadn't been raining that much.
The toilets/showers were in a portacabin but these were fine, the washing-up facilities were in an open-sided barn.
You can walk across the adjoining field to the village which is very pretty, has a Co-op and four pubs. We went to the first one (The Red Lion) and sat in the beer garden, the food was lovely and they were fabulous to all our children (13 of them!) bringing them out sweets.
We did have a nice time at this campsite, however the facilities are basic and the field is very sloping.

As a first camping experience for two young couples, this site provided everything we needed for a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
The staff were friendly and helpful, without being interfering.
There was plenty of space between tents, despite the campsite being full. We didn't experience any queues for toilets or showers, which were always clean. There was also a power point in there for hair dryers and straighteners!
It was a short stroll into Hawkshead where you can appertain a few swaleys and there are several shops (including a cooperative store - with cash machine) and lovely pubs (although the food was slightly pricey).
There are many activities in the local area - we would highly recommend the walk to Latterbarrow and hiring a boat on Coniston Lake.
Our only mild grievance was noisy sheep and a little mud (Only in the bottom field) - but hey we were camping after all!

It was our first time as a family camping and I must admit I think we chose an excellent campsite.Toilet and shower facilities were spotless, with always a good supply of loo roll! There was always a constant supply of hot water in the showers as well as for washing pots. Lovely views. Only about ten minutes walk to the lovely Hawkshead village. There is a milkman that comes round in the morning too, very reasonably priced. Noise, mainly people talking loudly or laughing, but that seemed to stop about 11pm every night so was'nt a problem. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely go again. Would benefit from maybe a little shop on site.

We returned to this site having visited last year - as expected it was fantastic - yes we can all gripe that there are not enough showers at any site, but for the size of site and with some time planning the facilities were excellent as they were last year, clean, equiped and easy to use. It is a hilly site and pitches have to be chosen with care. There are few frills on this site - no playground or shop as an example - but neither are needed here - the childrem from different sites were relaxed enough in the surroundings to make their own entertainment and group games occured. Hawkshead is a lovely., and easy stroll, across the fields for any provision needs, including pubs, tearooms and tourist info etc.
Very central for most parts of the lake district - but off the beaten track enough not to be spoilt.
A very relaxing site that we will definitely recommend, and return to ourselves next time we visit the lake district.

What a lovely site, friendly staff, clean, tidy and not too noisy, all round a great family site.
Exiting the site can be a little hairy as some of the locals don't hang around and the hedgerow can make vision a little tricky (Maybe a mirror on the opposite hedge?)
We booked this site way back when we were promised a 'BBQ summer' and ever since then the weather has looked to be against us. We arrived following a week or so of pretty much non stop rain and yet were still able to find a slightly sloping pitch perhaps a little too close to our neighbours but, they didn't seem to mind. There were one or two quite boggy area's and some fairly steep slopes but that being said I think everyone who arrived managed to find a suitable pitch.
The toilets are limited (Two showers, Two Toilets, Two Urinals and four sinks) in the gents but are well serviced and although the site was booked to capacity did not run out of 'consumables' at any time.
The washing up area was well supplied and although we lost all our freezer blocks over the course of the week (it seems some people work on the principle of 'I just dropped off 4 so I'll take 4 frozen ones') the freezer was a great benefit.
Hawkshead itself is a lovely little village all previous reviews seem a good summary and only ten minutes drive away is Conniston which has a few more shops to choose from including a rather good butcher.
We found this an ideal spot to use as a base for exploring although, be warned, if heading towards Ambleside as an exit route from the site be preppared for a daily delay due to the volume of traffic trying to work its way through the one way system. (Not bad just a little slow going and some people will never give way!)
I took the young lads (11 year olds) that were with us to the James Bond Museum (Keswick) and would probably only recommend this to true bond fans as we were left wanting a little more for the money we paid.
A great week all in all and if you are lucky enough to find our 'secret beach' off the B5289 on Crummock Water just beyond Buttermere you'll be treated to some spectacular views and fly-bys from various very serious looking aircraft, although one did dip his wings to us on the last day.
A wonderful week, great site, great company and beautiful part of the world.

Great campsite with good facilities, and very family friendly. Excellent value for money.
Part of a working farm, and the owners are very helpful.
Toilets and showers very clean.
The sign said site full, though it didn't feel busy (July 2009), so lots of space, and areas for children to play.
Some areas of the site are quite steep but you can pitch where you like.
This is the second time we have stayed here, and we will visit again.
