This is a lovely site, a short walk across the edge of a cornfield and you are on the cliff top, the Cleveland Way, which is a very long walk around the North Yorkshire area. It also leads to the pub, The Runswick Bay Hotel, which serves a nice pint or two. We stayed here for a week, two adults and a dog, and had a very relaxing stay.
The site was packed on the Saturday when we arrived; a large 40th birthday party was being held in one field. This didn't bother us but they were rather noisy so might bother some with children or those in a tent.
As has been mentioned before the toilet block is far too small. All three fields were packed on the Saturday, by mid afternoon there was only luke warm water in the showers and they became very messy. They really do need updating; the showers are so tiny, there is nowhere to put your clothes / towels other than the hooks on the door and getting dry was impossible since the water flooded out of the shower tray onto the floor next to it.
The nearest shop is about a mile away, not so convenient if you have a motor home and don't want to have to move it to go shopping. The beach is lovely and well worth the effort to walk down and back up again. Nice piece of cake in the cafe at the bottom.
If the owners were to do something about the toilets we might return. Otherwise, despite it being in a lovely location, we won't be back. Also there is no children's' playground / area awful tv signal and phone signal was poor. Could be important to some people.

We have been going to this campsite for 5 years, and this year (2010) will be our 6th time. It is brilliant for kids as although there is no playground, they can explore or play in the wooded areas which also stop the place being too windy. It is also great for dogs as there is the beach and also many footpaths where you can take them for walks etc. The facilities are good - the freezer and washing machines are useful and the toilets and showers are generally clean. However a couple of years ago new owners took over the site and since then it has not been quite as clean (although it's still good) and also it has become quite expensive.
Despite this, we still come year after year because it's in such a beautiful place, the beach is nearby and accessible by either a steep road with steps or a slightly longer but less steep path that goes through the little village of Runswick. The beach is also very long and fun for all.
There is a pub not far away - about 2 minutes walk - and the food is good although it's quite expensive, and the beer garden has not been tended to for about 4 years and last year (2009) it was very overgrown. However the pub does allow dogs. Also, although there is a pub nearby it's not noisy on site at all, especially as they have a rule that it mustn't be noisy after 11pm.
It is generally quite busy but people aren't crammed in so much, and there are many taps for drinking water close by everywhere on site.
The only down side is that sometimes in heavy rain one part floods badly, but that isn't the owners fault.
Generally though it's brilliant and close by to Whitby too for great days out.

Had a lovely few days at this site. Site generally well maintained. Wardens really friendly and helpful. Utility Room with washing machine and dryer and freezer.
Only criticism is shower cubicles are very small and not much space to get dressed, especially with children.
Nice pub in walking distance. Near beach but lots of steps to get down to it. Counted 277!

It was my first time camping in years and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend. We had a nice welcome from the owner, who directed us to the tent field, we were delighted to be the only ones in the field when we arrived and pitched the tent close to the trees. A stroke of genius as the wind blew and blew all weekend and we hardly felt a thing.
The toilet and shower block was nice and clean and the water was nice and hot. I will definitely go back again to this site as I love the area and think its a nice base to explore from.

My very first time in a tent, bank hols every site full but they found room for us, only two in a small two person tent but got to the site found a space no one seemed cramped they don't cram people in, nice clean toilets, plenty of loo rolls! washing machine, fridge in utility room loads of mirrors, showers, can have food, papers milk delivered, leaflets telling whats on in area, trees all round give shelter from wind, friendly owners, have nothing to compare but I will be going here again. No play ground for children but plenty on site that didn't seem to mind they found there own fun. Very near to beach but steep hill nice going down but you have to get back up! Footpath leads to cliff top path part of Cleveland Way, good chippy in nearby village 20 min walk away

Just been on site for one night, pulled up with no booking, very friendly greeting.
Site very clean, and tidy. Plenty trees for wind barrier, and dog friendly campsite.
Toilet and cleaning area very tidy,
Bin areas constantly getting empty,
Very nice area, pub close at hand which does lovely meals the runswick bay, and its great to call in for a pint once you reach the top after being to the beach and the beach is with in walking distance, and they accept dogs in the pub which was gr8 for us.
Great time will definitely be calling back, nice friendly area.

We paid £16 for a 2-man tent, 2 people, 1 car for 1 night. This was twice what we had paid the previous night and although quite pricey, the site was peaceful and clean.
Toilet blocks reasonably clean. 2 showers in Ladies - had to queue for a short time.
Site not crowded.
Good pub just round the corner - 1 minute walk.
Steep walk down to the bay - 5 mins walk.
Site is just off the Cleveland Way and on the bus route between Scarborough / Robin Hood / Whitby / Middlesborough.

Despite reading other reviews, I still visited as I wished my family to be as close to the bay as possible.
What did we experience? A very friendly welcome with full info (verbal & leaflet) provided about the site and nearby amenities.
Clean toilet block and wash room facilities (including a freezer); I considered these facilities to be ample - no queuing despite the site being fairly busy.
The site contains loads of room and some protection from the wind by way of tree 'wind breaks'. I did not consider the tariff to be expensive and felt it provided good value for money. The site was safe for children with area for them to 'explore'. The management have a positive approach to maintaining a peaceful environment.
Will definitely be returning and recommending.

Toilet block small, clean and well kept. Quite expensive for a family, £28 for 2 adults 3 children in 1 tent.
Pub nearby. Shops in nearby village (site shop a must).
Post office / shop in village nearby prices ridiculous.
Bay fantastic.
Great exercise.
Would have used site shop.
Nearby whitby and sandsend, good days out.
Will return.

Just returned from Runswick. Have been there couple of times, last visit 2 yrs ago. Things haven't changed much apart from new owners who have put the price up-£50 for 2 nights for 2 adults, 2 kids & a dog in a tent, it's a heck of a lot for a site with nothing much on it & as previous reviews said we were quite packed in. Wouldn't mind this if facilities improved but still not enough showers (though they are free, hot & plentiful) and they were not very clean, the previous owners, a lovely old fella who had plenty of time for a chat, at least seemed to take pride in the place & kept it very clean. Its such a shame but they have a monopoly as only 1 more site nearby & that's adults only. We like to go on the Staithes lifeboat weekend & love the area, beautiful scenery but we are tempted to hire a cottage in Staithes instead next year! May give them a second chance, hopefully they'll read these reviews & improve or at least lower the price a bit!
