Noisy, over-subscribed, toilets and showers left a lot to be desired; and the cost was way over what you'd expect to pay for ten times the facilities. Won't be back.
We visited this site the year before, with a caravan, and it was far better. The warden was turning people away then, instead of squashing them in. This time it was bedlam, and I went a whole week on 1 shower, and several cold baths in the sea! Beautiful area though, and nice food at the pub!

We have been visiting this site for a few years now and had previously put up with its drawbacks because of the excellent location and the reasonable price.
However, we now have to pay £25 a night for a family of four in a tent which in my opinion offers very poor value for money compared to other sites.
For example, on what is a large site you get only one male shower with at best tepid water.
Other points to note:
There is no shop on site or in the village.
There is no checkout after 12:30 unless you pay for another full day, even on a Sunday when the site is half full.
Children's bikes are enthusiastically banned.

We booked this site as it was the only one with space on the coast. The location is fantastic and the nearby pub is great with real homecooked food. However the campsite is expensive - we paid £25 per night for a family of 4 in a motorhome. For that we'd have expected more than 3 ladies' loos and electric that kept tripping out - no play area and the site was soaking wet (not the owners fault though!). There are not enough toilet facilities for the amount of people, and they were not very clean. We were unimpressed with the welcome generally and, apart from the great location, won't be rushing back.

We have been coming here for the past 10 years and have seen it grow in popularity from a quiet site to a busy one with many large (often noisy) groups. Under new ownership since we last visited the pricing has changed from per unit to £8 per person per night (a bit steep in my opinion for such a basic site). This might have explained the absense of the usual large groups so if that's the case the price increase is fine by me! We continue to come back as Runswick is such a gorgeous place to be. The pubs are a short walk from the campsite and the walking here is amazing. Try the walks to Whitby and Staithes along the Cleveland way.

We have stayed there three or four times, once for a full week.
The owners are very friendly and helpful, but down to earth Yorkshire people. It is not regimented, something we try hard to avoid. Pitch which ever way suites you. Dogs under control welcome and there is plenty of room for excercise. Probably best described as a fairly mixed site - all ages and families.
It can get extremely busy at peak times, there is lots of space, but not enough hook ups to make full use of all of that space. At less busy times the facilities cope easily, but with a full compliment they do become over whelmed - at such times, we found it best to use our own facilities. Showers are free, work well and the block is cleaned regularly - fine mid week. Grass is also cut regularly.
We tried to get over selves booked in late Friday afternoon just prior to the for the 2008 Mayday holiday. They were full, but even this late they were willing to accomodate us providing we could manage without hook up. We declined and eventually found a place near Richmond. 20 others we tried were full.
Plenty to see around the area. For an extremely good perfectly cooked and presented meal, at cafe prices we often nip over to Stainburn - follow the coast road north from the site. Winsors pub at the top of the hill/ edge of Stainburn town centre. We even nip the 70 miles from home (one way), just for the trip and the meal there.

This is a chaotic but friendly campsite with potentially large pitches. The setting is great, and though the beach is a shortish walk, it is down a very steep hill.
We went on a very busy holiday weekend, and people seemed to have booked, but, like us, when arriving units were parked pretty haphazardly. It was also someone's 40th and a few families were upset by the late night noise. The other night was fine. The block is fairly basic, and is not really up to serving the number of people allowed on the site. We would definiteley go back, as the children (2,5,8) had a fantastic time roaming the small wood and site.

I have just spent a weekend here at the end of September.
Moderately busy, but plenty of space.
Situated at the top of the hill from the bay so its only a few minutes walk down. Though it is a steep walk.
It cost £7 per person per night for a tent pitch with no electric hookup.
We arrived at 9pm and just set up camp where we liked and paid the next morning.
Very friendly manager.
The site itself is well kept and the grass cut.
There are a few flat spots for the tents which were all taken. The rest is very slightly sloping.
The toilet block itself is cleaned every day, though there was a very slight drain smell in there and the tiles grout is getting a tad blackened in places. But its no big deal.
There is an excellent utility room at the rear with three sinks, a chest freezer, and washing machine. There is also a tumble dryer which is 50p for three minutes.
For disposable BBQ's you'll find a stack of bricks to sit them on by the tap and bins in the tent field.
For great home cooked food and a friendly pub atmosphere with a nautical feel. Go out of the campsite and turn left and walk for about two minutes to the Runswick Bay Hotel on the corner. It has just come under new management. You can play cards, dominos, and darts there to bide your time if the weather is foul aswell!

Site not bad but not enough toilets & showers. We found people in our parking space next to our tent the next day . A tent the other side had set up only 18" way from our tent. Did not appear control on noise late at night. Expensive nearby shop. Pubs O.K. Could be people need educating on Camping and how not too invade peoples space and paid for pitches. Good area to visit from here though.

Probably not the best choice of campsite for a busy glorious bank holiday weekend. Having booked well in advance upon arrival they were not too bothered whether we had or not. The field was good being well sheltered but as the weekend progressed so did the quantity of tents. OK so the season has not been brilliant but it was becoming very very cosy by the Saturday evening! This then brought about problems as there are only 2 showers and due to the demand only one would work properly leaving queues out of the door. The cleanliness and supplies of paper towels/toilet rolls was also not sufficient for the quantity of people using these facilities. All in all a very pleasant camp site but spoiled by the fact that the facilities could not cope with the quantity of people they allowed through their gates. The walk to the beach is fine but the hill is very steep. The beach is great for kids but a few too many dogs off leads/not closely supervised.

I'm not sure where they get 25 pitches from as there where over that in the field we where in. I have to say though it was very nice site and very good for families. One thing I think would be better is more showers that work independently so one person isn't getting a trickle of a shower. Also if having more than the 25 pitches to have a second toilet / shower block. All in all though I would certainly recommend this site to anyone who has a family as we found it to be very quite after 11pm. Owners where very helpful too. Excellent place to set as base camp as Whitby and Staithes very close, would also recommend the cafe at bottom of hill in Runswick. One thing i would say is be careful about tide as water comes in very fast so check tide times.
