Oh dear, have just come home from 9 days in Waxham Sands. There was no soap in the loos and no hand towels, the showers were 50p for 5 minutes and if you move around a lot you would get wet. The pitches are big and you can put up what ever you want too. However they are very close back to back and you can hear people in the next tent breathing at night.

They have a good shop and a good Fish and Chip shop on site, the staff are friendly and help ful. They have site security and they are on patrol all night as they need to be.

However the beach made all the difference, just a 2 minute walk from the tent over the sand dunes.

Just spent our second weekend here and had a great time, if your looking for peace and quiet then this is not the site for you. Great for kids with a crazy golf course and a play area. Lots of open space for ball games etc etc

On the main field there are 4 toilet/washing up blocks and one shower block. So at peak times you can queue for all of the facilities.Water points are spread across the field

Some pitches have E.H.U but to get one you need to book one in advance

The beach is only 50 yards across the sand dunes and is very clean and tidy with a chance to see the seals.

A club shop is open from 8am untill 9pm and all the basics can be had and you can order papers

Ice packs can be re-frozen £1 deposit 20p per block

Pitchs are £15 2 adults 2 children and a dog and 1 car

The pitchs are 13m x 13m and are close together so noise late at night can sometimes be a little problem

The nearest pub is about 1 mile away and the supermarket is 7 miles away

At very busy times the toilet/showers can get a bit messy but they are cleaned everyday.

If you like walking, wildlife its a great base

Sea palling is 3 miles up the coast and when the tides out you can walk all the way on the beach

Beautiful location. Fabulous beach a walk over the dunes which really made the holiday. Not a tacky hut or ride in sight! Really nice to sit on the beach in the dark gazing at the stars! Saw loads of seals!

Directly near the site they tend to be in the water anything from a few feet to a couple of meters out. However head a couple of miles along the coast (go right when standing on the dunes facing the sea) for around 8am when its quiet and you will see about 100 seals basking on the beach and many more playing in the shallows. If you can't face the walk park near the Nelson pub (about a mile from the site) head down the footpath past the farm toward the dunes, walk through the man made beach entrance and head right for about half a mile and you'll see them. The breakers are made of stone here so you'll know you're in the right area.

The site is pretty basic. A £10 a night site with a £5 surcharge for the fab beach. That said we would come back as its such a lovely location. I would imagine if you're in a caravan its not so much of a pain, but for example there is no soap or hand drying facilities in the toilet blocks which we felt was a basic provision (you're expected to take your own. When I asked they said soap used to get taken or thrown away so they stopped bothering - surely wall mounted dispensers are the answer then??).

There is 1 shower block with about 10 showers, which for a site with approx 200-300 pitches isn't enough. You pay 50p (a token) for a shower, and most are pretty pathetic in terms of power, though they were a nice temperature. If you're going to charge for showers I think they should be fairly powerful and a pleasant experience! I struggled to get sand off my hair and body in 5 mins under them.

There was also only one washing up sink near to where we were, and enough hot water for about 2 hours of washing in the morning, outside of that you needed to boil a kettle, and be very flexible on when you washed up due to volume so not ideal. On the up side - ladies - there is a plug point in each toilet block (takes 30p tokens from reception) so you can take your hairdryer!

The shop is excellent, well priced with quite a lot of variety, though the older woman who served me that night had obviously had enough when I heard her mutter 'we're not tesco you know' as I was loading my basket (you'd think most small shops would be pleased with someone spending £50 in their shop and not tesco!). We managed the first nights dinner, with beer and decent wine and some basics all from the shop.

Crazy golf is £1 a round. The play areas unfortunately are not near really the tents/caravan areas, its across the road way in front of the entrance so not the ideal relaxing experience for parents with small children. There were regular groups of older kids there though.

To be honest most played together around the tents and caravans or near the entrance to the dune walkways. There is a chip van open from 5pm - 8pm each night, great value, cooked to order, which made a nice break from cooking.

Real mix of people, groups, families with young -teen years, nice buzz about the site but not too noisy later on. Site seems relaxed about how you pitch up so although it looks packed you do get a decent amount of space to pitch in. Would recommend some wind breakers, as you do feel the wind when it comes off the sea in early evening and morning).

It is a dog friendly site, and beach, with ample walks through the dunes. Most owners picked up after their dogs but some didn't (wish they would as lots of kids around) and some really didn't get the 'keep your dog on a lead' rule, but a tolerable balance was possible and despite there being a lot of dogs there wasn't much barking.

There is a tesco about 7 miles away in Stahlam which is a decent size. Great Yarmouth not far but the last bit of the drive into the centre was nightmare busy unfortunately. Would recommend a day out on a boat in the broads, really relaxed exeperienced. Also went to Bewilderwood, which although imaginative I would say does not hold enough interest for kids over the age of 8/9.

Was suprised at how much we queued for things too. We went at lunch, but would recommend holding off till around 1pm as the queue was much shorter by then.

Had a couple of nights here in a non-electric pitch. Plenty of room to pitch. Loo/shower blocks cleaned regularly, 50p tokens available from the shop, hot water fine. Just over the dunes to the lovely beach! Good hour walk to Sea Palling. Along the way we saw loads of seals. Great fun.

Warning to bare-foot kids - glass and rubbish left on the floor cut a kid's foot. Overall impression that pitches were a bit dirty but not shop/loos etc. Chip shop on site plus some good play equipment. Would go again for a weekend but not longer as prefer something a bit tidier.

Had a lovley 2 weeks here, wonderful beach with seals swimming past all day a 10min walk to the north and they were laying on the beach fantastic to see,3 toilet blocks so where ever you was on the site they were close by,a great shop with all you need (inc leisure batt) at great prices. The only minus was the toilet waste disposal was next to were you wash up and the amps on electric hook up was only 6 amp (kept tripping)

The pitches were large but when busy you still seemed on top of each other.Large shower block that looked clean all the time( although didn't use had shower in van)

There was a tesco 7 miles to the north and Great Yarmouth 14ish miles to the south worth a visit,

All in all a lovely site with very helpful owners,

Also a good dog walk on site.

We have just got home from a glorious weekend at Waxham Sands, it was our first ever visit there (on recommendation) and it certainly won't be our last!

We had booked for Saturday night only but rang Friday afternoon to see if we could stay Friday night too, the answer was yes so we chucked our stuff in the car and off we went. On arrival we realised how lucky we were to get the extra night as they were turning people away as they were fully booked due to the predicted heatwave.

It was easy to find and when we arrived to book in at 7pm, it was absolutely heaving! There were half a dozen others waiting to book in too but the check in was very quick and painless with clear directions to our pitch from lovely staff.

We had an electric pitch (£14 a night), very close to the toilets, showers, wash up, shop etc.The pitches are huge and very flat, some people had a couple of tents per pitch as they were more than big enough.

The toilets were cleaned twice a day and always had ample loo roll, we showered at different times of the day and the water was always hot and although the pressure isn't fantastic the token (50p) gives you more than enough time to have a decent shower.

The shop is like a treasure trove and stocks everything you could want and not at premium prices like many other places we have been to.

We had amazing fish and chips from the on site takeaway, freshly cooked to order and we also had breakfast from there on Sunday.

The beach was stunning, glorious sand as far as you can see and the seals in the sea are amazing to watch. We had a walk along to see a family of 8 on the beach and there must have been 2 dozen in the water.

The atmosphere on the site was buzzing, it was full for most of the weekend and everyone was so friendly. It was lovely to sit and watch people milling about to and from the beach and kids playing etc there was no loud music or rowdy groups it was just perfect!

We will definitely be returning, it is a very addictive place and definitely worth a visit!

Quite hard to find, in between Horsey and Waxham. Nnice quiet site. The toilets and showers were cleaned twice a day, so no complaints there. Wwhen we were there the chip van only opened weekends in the morning for breakfast (but not Sunday) and between 5.30 and 7 pm. in the evening.

The only pub The Nelson, at Horsey within reasonable walking distance about 1.5 miles away, seems to close when they want, we were there Saturday June 12th and they closed at 9.30 pm. (and had no TV for the World Cup) and on the Monday June 14th they closed at 10 pm.

There was nothing wrong with the camp site, just a bit remote, so be prepared.

We had a wonderful 10 day stay stay at this site and loved it. Its not an all singing and dancing site with an entertainment/bar complex which, for us, made it even better. There is a shop + v good mobile fish/chip van and crazy golf. We pitched facing sand dunes and over these was one of the best beaches we have come across. You can walk along the beach to The Nelson pub and Poppies Restaurant at Waxham - both brill and there's a good pub/restaurant at Sea Paling. The toilets were kept clean and tidy but there was only one shower block for the site but again adequate (50p token). There were sinks to wash pots but these only seemed to have warmish water.

We saw lots of seals in the sea and twice walked towards Winterton and saw at least 80 seals on the beach - felt extremely privileged at the sight of families of adults and pups.

We did forget our Calor Gas bottle and the chap in the office let us borrow one. He took a £20 deposit from us and only returned £6.25 when we took the bottle back (which did seem a bit steep) but that is our only little gripe.

We will definitely return to this site in the future

Having read previous reviews on this site we found what we expected. It is quite a basic slightly old fashioned campsite, but good none the less. Everything you would need.

Showers and toilets clean and work on a token system which helps keep the queues down. Just one complaint is that showers are locked until 8am which is really no good for us early risers or for an early start!

I liked Harry who runs the show (and his slightly wry sense of humour), and we were very grateful of a very last minute bank holiday booking which showed great flexibility - which other campsites nearby didn't seem to have much time for.

We took our dog with no problems. This is a very 'family' site with lots of large family groups while we were there, and you get the feeling that a lot of these families having been returning over many years. Children seem to love this site with the mini golf and the rabbits and guinea pigs near the main entrance. Because of the large groups though, it isn't the quietest site we've been to.

The beach is a fabulous five minutes away to get there but 10 minutes to come back on the dry sand! It's a good workout coming off the beach!

All in all about 8/10 for this site and would happily visit again.

The site really does give off a seventies feel, but don't let that put you off. We managed to get two pitches (not next to one another) with EHU on the day (phoned in the morning).

Showers/Wash Rooms/WC

The site has Gents/Ladies shower blocks, with about a dozen showers in each (operated by 50p token). These are located at the main entrance to the site near the reception. They operate from 8am until late evening. I liked the fact each shower had a sort of 2-room thing so that you could put all your clothes etc on a bench in the dry-room and then step into the actual wet-room. I didn't like the fact I hadn't a clue how long the shower was going to last (especially when I brought my 20 month old with me). However, they did last long enough.

There are basins in the main toilet blocks (next to the shower blocks).

There are also at least two other toilet blocks with basins for washing in.

Each block has an outdoor, single, dish washing sink.

I never had any problem with hot water, and I didn't have to queue for anything.

Kids Playground

A variety of swings, slides and such like. Also rabbits and a guinea pig in a reasonable size enclosure within the playground. The playground is not in view of the pitches.

Pitches

A good size, a fair few with EHU, and you're requested to set up on the left of the pitch. Each pitch is numbered. Lots of groups managed to fit in gazebos and make use of the space by walling themselves in with wind breaks while we were there.

The perimeter pitches are hemmed in with a good hedgerow/trees, or (on the side nearest the sea) sand dunes. The inner pitches are in rows (ideal for big groups).

Shop

On site, sells loads of stuff, not expensive.

General Site Info

Facilities were cleaned, but possibly not often enough. Caravan's are kept in the adjacent field and towed out (by tractor) and put into the pitches as and when the owners are booked in to stay. Tractors collect the rubbish from the various refuse areas around the site on a daily basis. The gravel on the track around the site is a bit noisy first thing. Kids do play out till late, but this wasn't too much of a problem.

There is a static fast food van that serves everything from fish to burgers. Don't dismiss it! It opened at 5pm when we were there, took us the best part of an hour to come back with our dinner, but it was pleasant surprise to find it tasted really nice.

Beach

This IS a top quality beach. It wasn't crowded in the height of the Summer Holidays. It's pale sand is smooth as silk and gets even better if you get up to the Seal colony (park at the Horsey Mill and ask for directions - about a mile walk along footpaths across fields). The seals laid basking in the sun right on the beach, as many swam up and down the rest of the beach. They seemed almost as curious about us as we were of them. Saw a few Kestrels quite close up.

Locality

You are out in the wilds a little bit. A traditional pub just a mile away serving food and Nelsons Revenge ale! Not far from Hemsby (if you like arcades and chip shops), but also ideally placed for visiting some of the many attractive parts of Norfolk.

Finally, to round this up, we've said we'd like to go back at some point. It would be a perfect base to visit that part of Norfolk, rather than the splendid lazing around we did this time! Reasonable prices, adequate facilities, all in all quite good. I'd love the showers to open earlier in the morning though!
