Just come back from a great family camping weekend with children 4 - 6 yrs and granny and this site was great, had all we needed, clean wash facilities and showers were warm. The Forest Inn only a short walk for food and a beer. We hired bikes from up the road and you could access some pathways into the forest from the site and never hit a main road. Did some cross country cycling with tag a longs and children holding on. Site was busy but not too noisey very tidy and we would deffinitely come back.

Our first family camping trip, and Ashurst didn't disappoint despite the weather! Found a good pitch after driving around the site and noticing how wet a lot of it was following storms of the previous weekend. Staff on site always helpful and cheerful. Shower and toilet block were kept very clean and and plenty of them. Likewise, dishwashing facilities were excellent.
Having pitched our tent, sat and watched as a very confident New Forest Pony completely dissappeared into a neighbouring tent to check out their supplies! Quickly ensured our own supplies were safely shut away! Some reviewers have commented on the noise from the road and railway line, but we didn't find this intrusive at all. After a very wet night we visited the New Forest Otter, Owl and Wildlife Park just down the road but to be honest the rain and flooded pathways hampered our enjoyment a little! On return to site the large puddle outside our tent had started to creep into our porch, and much of the tent floor was feeling like a waterbed, so we had to make the sorry decision to strike camp and return home.(kids very upset).Despite the weather and the early return, I am sure we will return to Ashurst - hopefully in sunshine!

We stayed at this site the night of Saturday 4th May. We only stayed the one night, although we booked and paid for the minimum 3 nights that you have to book over a bank holiday. The main reason for leaving a night early was the weather turned very wet again, and we had the pleasure of a group of 4 noisy youngsters camping near us on the Saturday night which meant we were awake a lot of the night.
The campsite itself was rather water logged after all of the rain that we have had recently, and you had to be very careful about where you drove and camped. My husband drives a Discovery and as soon as we arrived on site, before we even decided where to pitch, we were being asked to help pull someones camper van out of the mud.
There is a train line that runs along one side of the camp and the main road isn't that far from another side of the camp.
The shower, toilet and dishwashing facilities were superb, as was the location of the site on the edge of the New Forest. This was our first time staying at a Forest Holidays campsite, and although we possibly wouldn't stay at this site again, as we found it to be a bit noisy for us, we would deffinately stay at a Forestry Commision site again.

We have just returned from a three day stay at this site and were very impresssed.
We used the online booking system and all the paperwork (including a list of ranger led activities) was waiting for us on arrival making the booking in process very quick and straightforward. If you take out a 'Forest Experience Card' the site fees are reduced by £3 per night.
There were only about 20 units on the site during our stay so we had a wide choice of available pitches. We chose a site in the woods quite close to the railway line but although we were aware of the train noise we were not overly disturbed by it.
The site is kept very well maintained. The centrally placed toilet block is extremely clean and warm. There are ample toilets, showers and washrooms and the dishwashing room has 9 sinks in it.
The site is in a good location for exploring the New Forest. From the bus stop just outside the site you can easily get to Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Lymington. The site is just 5 minutes walk from the railway station and from there you can very quickly get into Southampton.
The walk into Lyndhurst along a cycle path takes about 40 minutes and this would avoid the problem of traffic hold ups in the summer.
This is a very good 'low -key' site in a very good location. We would have no hesitation in using this site again and hope to try out other 'Forest Holiday' sites in the future.

We have just spent 4 days here and I love the site. Its not at all developed, surrounded by woods with ponies wandering around the site it has a great feel to it. There were plenty of toilets, washrooms and showers which were absolutely spotless plus a really clean laundry room and dishwashing room. It is hard to see how these can be improved and its a shame other sites dont offer this standard of facilities. But no matter how nice it all looked you cannot escape the fact that on one side you have the A35 on the other Southwest trainline and flight path overhead. I like a peaceful site and so would not return.

Been here more times than I can remember. Always fantastic (if you don't mind ponies that have been known to walk right through our tent). Can get busy, but always plenty of room for everyone. The trees are better than any childrens playground. Plenty of places to walk, cycle and even get the train to. Good pub next door selling good food. Can't recommend it highly enough. Will probably return at least once every year for ever more.

Me and my friends have stayed at this campsite a number of times over the years and have found it a pleasant and relaxing stay every time.
The staff are helpful and informative and the general positioning of the campsite is ideal for a weekend away from the city- be it cycling (some excellent routes nearby), walking or just chilling out on the site with a box of Red on top of your car.
The gamboling horses and woodland creatures at the site were a pleasant surprise, and gave us a real 'Lord of the Rings' feel, though dung piles near the tent became a nuisance!
One night a group of scamps in a motorhome insisted in blasting 'barbie Girl' and other assorted early 90's hits out of a soundsystem and keeping us awake- but we didn't mind as we were sat up drinking around the campfire with some toothless ladies who worked in an ise cream factory in Devon. One of them insisted in enjoying a broken plastic beaker with the remnents of Baileys in it to glug at our box of red wine.
A group of wardens with a 1940's searchlight came around the camp to ask us to turn the noise down, which was a bit dissapointing since it was only us two awake at this stage and we were whispering into each others ears and keeping a really low profile like Arnie at the end of the movie 'predator'. I am sure we must have been mistaken for the Irish soundsystem which they finally unplugged around 5am.
All in all a great site, and despite the above couple of gripes we are planning to visit again this summer.

We have stayed here a few times, mainly on the first and last nights of our trips to the New Forest.
Staff here are usually helpful and friendly. The toilets and showers are very basic but clean, maybe a little heating wouldn't go amiss??
The main point of staying in the New Forest though has to be the horses and cattle, and we have never been let down when staying here!
The last visit we had a young bull come and make friends with us - well we will park under apple trees!
The best advice I can give you is make sure you come prepeared, luckily we have our own toilet so we don't need to trapse across the site to use the bathroom in the middle of the night - there's no way I'd have gone on my own, and my partner would not be too impressed with being woken to go for a romantic walk to the toilet block at three in the morning!
All in all a great place to stop for the first/last night of the week, not sure you could stay here much longer without a car, and lets face it, if you're stopping in the New Forest you will want to be somewhere in the middle of it, not just on the very edge!
Highly recommended stop over!

We found this site very welcoming & pleasant. Seeing the ponies roaming free was amazing. Being next to the woods was very nice & we saw wild deer as well. The showers & toilets were kept very clean & well maintained. The pitches were not too close to each other so you don't feel cramped. There is a very nice bar/restaurant called the Happy Cheese which we frequently visited. Being in Ashurst we found was near to most things we needed. The otter & owl sanctuary was definitely worth a visit. A great day out. A nice & quiet site. We would definitely visit this site again Thanks for a lovely week.

Wow! what a fantastic site, couldn't wish for much more, only thing that we found odd was was no recycling facilities on a forestry commission site. Location: excellent, Staff: excellent, Facilities: excellent, in fact there were no bad points at all and the kids made some good mates playing in the open air all day. We will be going back again and again and again without a doubt and thats just what the kids say.
