Had the good fortune of camping here with a friend for my first UK camping experience - loved it so much I was back two weeks later with my husband and two daughters. The staff were some of the most friendly, helpful people I have ever come in contact with and were more than happy to provide recommendations, directions and share their knowledge of the local wildlife.
The site is very well maintained and the facilities were clean and well taken care of. I had read the other reviews so I was aware of the expected shower queues, however we never experienced an excessive delay. The ponies were wonderful and the Shetlands were so sweet. We even had a small group of cows wander through one morning. Both times I was camping over the weekend and the site was fully booked, however I never felt cramped or imposed on. As they have no designated pitches, you simply respect each others space and camp at least 20 feet away.
The area is full of things to keep you busy and Lyndhurst (just a few miles away) is a charming little town with lots of shops, pubs and restaurants. There is also a well stocked camping/caravan shop in Lyndhurst which saved the day when one of our air mattresses went a bit flat. Within walking distance from the campsite, there are two pubs/restaurants. Unfortunately my experience at The Happy Cheese was not as positive as others. We went there for breakfast and to rent 4 bikes. My daughter will only eat scrambled eggs so that is what we requested. We were informed that the cook will not make scrambled eggs because they are not on the menu. Luckily, there is also a sandwich shop in the same area that makes a great bacon baguette packed with freshly cooked, thick sliced rashers. Needless to say we choose not to rent the bikes (we later found them less expensive to rent in Lyndhurst). We did not find The Happy Cheese accommodating nor family friendly. With that said, The New Forest Inn (even closer to the campsite) is a truly charming pub/restaurant and also provides excellent food at very fair prices. As the summer has been so rainy we found ourselves stuck looking for something to do one afternoon. We wandered into The New Forest Inn and spent the entire afternoon playing darts and monopoly. We were there for several hours and at no time did they make us feel anything less than guests in their home. Bless them as I think most of the campsite was also in there that afternoon.
I am very confident in recommending this campsite and will certainly be back. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

We visited this site with a group of 10 adults and 13 children. We managed to pitch the tents relatively close together with plenty of space between the tents to adhere to the 6 metre rule which they are very strict about. The site itself is very nice, the showers/toilets/washing up areas are very clean and heated, plus centrally located on the site so that you are never to far away from them. As per some of the other reviews the railway and road would be noisy if you were pitched near to them but we were over the other side of the site and so it was no problem for us. The ponies were no problem to us as we ignored them and ensured that we didn't leave any food out for them to sniff out. The staff at the site were extremely helpful and even advised Us not to stay an extra night as severe winds and rain were forecast. The reception area hired out freezer blocks at a charge of 30p and £1 deposit. The location was good for visiting some areas of the New Forest, however if you need to travel through Lyndhurst to reach your destination expect traffic jams as the village is a bottleneck and you could expect hold ups of up to 1 hour sometimes. I would go back to a Forest campsite, however the location of this one is too far away from the coast for me.

We have just returned from a wonderful few days at this campsite. We found the staff very helpful and friendly and the site itself quiet, surprising as it was fairly busy. The toilet and shower block was kept lovely and clean although a few extra showers would have been good as there are only six of each male and female showers. It was lovely to have the ponies around and they werent really a nuisance at all as long as you are sensible and follow the advise of the staff. Its within a few minutes walk from two nice pubs one of which also does bike hire for a reasonable rate, also only 5 minutes drive from the lovely Lyndhurst and a 10 minute drive to the beautiful Puttles bridge. All in all a great time and we'll definitely be returning very soon

This was our first camping holiday, and thanks to Ashurst, it won't be the last. The site itself is clean and tidy, run by nice staff who are always friendly and ready to assist. The toilet, shower and washing up facilities were very good, with no shortage of hot water, and were cleaned on a regular basis. One point to note is that the campsite is close to an A-Road, so there is some traffic noise, and is close to a rail line, which has trains passing on a regular basis. However, the noise created by these was not intrusive. The site is also great for kids as there were no dogs, you were surrounded by woodland and there were ponies roaming around all day. I'll close by saying that this is a great place to stay, well done to the Ashurst staff.

Love the New Forest but a bit disappointed with this site. Thought it was very expensive (£50 for 2 nights even with a forest holidays discount card). Ground was pretty difficult for friends to pitch their tent. Some big dips in the ground everywhere. Shower blocks lovely and new but not worth £50! Will go back to basics at Aldridge Hill next time. Also beware ponies, they will eat toys too!

We have stayed on this site over the past 18 yrs and now sadly it has come to an end as it is no longer run by the Forestry Commission.
When Ron and David ran this site it was a pleasure to be on, very helpful staff at that time, not so many silly rules and 'twas a very relaxed atmosphere, hence we and many others returned year after year.
The train line is not too much of a bother noise wise, it does tend to flood in places but common sense will point out the places to avoid. The toilet shower blocks although kept in good working order and are very clean are not sufficient to deal with the numbers , particularly at weekends. We also noticed that many Foreign tourists and those that have toured like our selves abroad are disappointed at the prices. as a 1st class English site it is well below what you would get for your money abroad and it shows.
The area and views and welcoming staff can only go part of the way in making up for the expense. No on site gas was available and no shop, but Asda Tesco and Morrison within a 10 minute drive, and gas suppliers also with 10 minutes , but don't run out after 5.30 or before 9 in the morning! Good pubs and restaurants nearby
We can recommend the Trusty Servant at Minstead good home cooked food not boil-in-a-bag like some of the national run public houses, also the last resting place of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

This is a favourite site for us. Newly refurbished Toilet blocks which are always clean. There are 12 showers in the ladies 6 per block and hot water is always available. There are also individual cubicles for private washing and hot air dryers for hands. This year they have put a mop and bucket by the showers for those that will use them. The Laundry room is brilliant with brand new American washing machines and tumble dryers which are reasonably priced and very quick! We had 2 sleeping bags and 2 sets of bedding to wash and dry and it was done within 1.5 hours. The Ponies can be a problem as they will go into your tent if they smell food, but if you keep a small water pistol nearby it does deter them. Try to keep all food in your car or trailer and watch where the little ones go with their food. Gentle pushing on the neck will redirect most ponies but be careful not to get too close to the back legs or teeth as they can bite and kick.
The staff are very friendly and will give you directions and information readily, they live on site so are always available. The surrounding woods are fantastic for exploring and you can take long walks from the campsite. We always try to take as much food etc as we need because the Kids and Hubby never want to leave the site even for a minute. Lyndhurst has some good camping supply shops open 7 days a week as well as a fabulous butcher's that sells venison sausages and burgers. Ashurst has a few little shops (Coop etc) and some takeaways and Southampton is only a few miles up the road. Morrisons is fairly close 10 mins by car. All in all a fantastic site for a chilled out holiday away from noisy clubhouses and pubs although there are pubs and restaurants within walking distances.

What a lovely site. The staff were really attentive when needed and the facilities very clean. The wildlife although lovely, need to be watched as they are well practised in the art of stealing food! Found a great pub that really made us welcome called The Happy Cheese and they even do Cycle Hire now so no need to go all the way to Lyndhurst (3miles away). We hired a couple of bikes twice as the pub is right on the cycle route. Really good cheap way to fill your day in beautiful surroundings. We will definatley be back to this site.

Ideal campsite for wildlife as it is amongst trees and right at the edge of a wood. There are loads of greater spotted woodpeckers and green woodpeckers. Other birds we saw were tree creepers, nuthatches, siskin, tawny owl, all sorts of different birds of prey as well as your average garden birds too. Also we were lucky enough to see wild deer further into the woods. Keep your eyes peeled for common lizards and the odd vole! The campsite had really good toilets with constant hot water in the showers and wash basin cubicles. The toilets were very clean. We would recommend this campsite for woodland walkers or anyone interested in wildlife.

This site was very nice for the time of year and the facilities are excellent. Our car broke down on-site, the staff were helpful, and the local villages supplied everything we needed to get it going again. However, there is a major problem with the wild horses and ponies that dominate the site. Your food will be taken! Every night a horse managed to lift the front of our tent to get at the food. Cooking is also hindered by animals that are not afraid to take what they want. Even so, perhaps this added to the fun of what was otherwise a really enjoyable stay.
