This is our favorate site. The shower block is basic but clean and the showers are hot and powerful, although you will have to queue at peak times. The staff are friendly and helpful. The site is beautiful with ponies, cows and donkeys roaming (Who will try to steel your food, so keep it put away). the forest walks are great or take a bike. Pithes are no marked or allocated so you have a good choice of either sheltered under the trees or open in the sun. We have been many times when they were full and still did not feel overcrowded. The village of ashurst is a 5 minute walk with an excellent fish and chip shop. Lyndhurst is 5 minutes by car with some lovely shops and bike hire. There is no EHU on this site but they do have an icepack service. This is an excellent site for a quiet retreat.

Myself, wife, daughter and two grandkids had a great time here. We went to local pub, very nice. There is a shop just down the road, about 7 min down the road - as you go out of the campsite turn left. There is a good camp shop too, cheap as well. We had a good weekend down here will go back.

Go to this site each August with 6 other families. Great that you can choose your pitch and we usually manage to pitch all together with the gazebo too. Tasty french bread available from reception- cooked to order so lovely and warm! They also offer a facility where they will recharge mobiles, nintendo's, i-pods etc for a small fee so remember to take your chargers.
Those un-familiar with the new forest must ensure that they don't leave any food unattended as the horses wander amongst the tents and will eat anything. Also, they will go into the tents if you leave them unzipped!
The toilet block is regularly cleaned and has plenty of loos and sinks, but the queue for the shower can be quite long as there are only 6 of them which is not many for such a large site. Took to getting up at 6.30 to 7 so that I didn't spend ages queueing. Lots to do locally- easy walk across the forest to lyndhurst accessed from the back of the site. Not too far to get to a beach either and good pubs locally.
Love the laid back atmosphere of this site. Sometimes children dont want to get in the car and drive somewhere to go out for the day. They are happy to spend ages on their bikes off in the woods exploring and playing ball games. That means the adults can sit around relaxing quietly- a perfect combination!

Had a long weekend here in fantastic weather - struggled to find a pitch when we arrived at 4 pm on a Thursday afternoon. Next day about 11-12 am there were lots of people out waiting for people to move - so it you can get there for midday I would! The toilets struggled with the volume of people and did get a bit smelly - I showered early or very late (evening) and didn't have a problem. The ponies are everywhere and spread our rubbish all over the site and invaded the tent but the kids loved them - apart from the one who gave my 3yr old a nip when she decided she was going to stroke it despite being told not to. Would highly recommend taking the kids and a picnic cycling in the New Forest - We hired bikes in Lyndhurst (cycle shop is on the central carpark in Lyndhurst) and did 12 miles on tracks - beautiful. If going from Ashurst into Lyndhurst make sure you either park just before Lyndhurst or spot the first turning into the carpark - on your right just after you join the oneway or you will spend hours in traffic queues like we did! A good site for a long weekend but very busy!

We have stayed here for a couple of years running and decided to go for a change this year (2006) as we were camping with friends with a dog. Having experienced another site in the Forest, we definitely prefer Ashurst due to its open, level ground. It has plenty of room for group bookings and is a relatively quiet site. Although the train line is quite close, it is fairly unobtrusive and the road is far enough away to not be heard. The free showers and loos are clean and there are plenty of them. I don't believe we have ever had to queue (although we have never been at peak times in high summer). We have seen problems with ponies that have kicked children and trampled through tents. (The particular ponies did have foals they were feeding and were caught and removed to another part of the Forest.) There are big signs not to feed or touch the ponies and these should be ignored at your peril! The only downside of the site is that it is on a busy road so it is not very nice to go for a walk to nearby Lyndhurst - unless you can negotiate a map, the Forest, and the bogs!

Enjoyed our stay here. It's a forest holidays site that is really cheap. The toilets are fine but there are only six showers and as it's a big site you may or probably will have to queue morning and evening. We went to the Happy Cheese pub which was really good value - meals for a fiver and a kids menu. The ponies are great - our kids loved it - plenty of place to play but it was busy. You can bike on trails without having to go on a road which is excellent. It's not far from Lyndhurst at all but that A road down the middle is a complete nightmare - we queued for an hour to go four miles! Loads to do in the New Forest - we were going to go to Portsmouth etc but found ourselves just staying in the forest - we went to the reptile centre and to see the oldest tree. There is so much to do. We will be back.

Last minute decision to try this site as live locally and liked reviews. Has a very open feel as you can choose your pitch but lots of surface water limited your choice. Ground v hard so nearly broke my hand getting the pegs in - bought a mallet now! Very private even tho within 1 min of toilet/shower block. Highly recommend nachos with beef chilli at The New Forest pub 5 mins walk away. Will warm you up no end on a dodgy May evening! A bit quiet if you have kids and no play area I could see but a great site if you have bikes and the ponies keep the grass well trimmed! The trains dont shake the ground and you can always hop on at Ashurst station nearby for Southampton or Bournemouth. You might find the Red Shoot site (Linwood) better if you want an even closer pub and a play area!

Booked early for this site but was disappointed to arrive and find that it was packed - struggled to find an area where our three tents could be pitched together. Also annoyed that our friends tiny storage tent incurred a £20 fee! Loved the ponies and donkeys that roamed the site though the rest of our group weren't so thrilled - they will come over and try and eat your food, rubbish, book, clothes.... (I saw one paw its way into a tent and start chewing on the air mattress!)
The area was very nice and the nearby pubs were great. Toilets at the site were fine but had to queue for showers. Though I think this could be a lovely site it was just far too crowded with other units pretty much on top of you. And the site wardens - though they were parolling the place - were ignoring the fact that there were certain people making A LOT of noise past 11am - no one seemed aware of any kind of camping etiquette. I thought it was a bonus when they told us we could pitch anywhere we liked but from now on i'll look for sites with allocated pitches.

2nd visit to this campsite. 1st time was in June 2005 half term. Loved the site so much booked up straight away to come back in August. With 2 girls aged 10 and 5 this site is ideal, they can go off to explore together and we know they are OK. Not far from the beaches, fantastic for horse riding and if you have bikes you must take them as there are loads of cycle paths. For wetter days there is Southampton for cinemas, leisure pools and of course shopping. The wardens are really friendly and helpful, and our girls are already pleading with us to book again for next year.
I have to say, Ashurst is our favourite site.

August 2005 This was our first visit to this lovely Forestry Commission site, and we will definitely be returning. The site was fully booked for the nights we were there but there was no feeling of crowding- tents must be pitched at least 20 feet apart and most were much more widely spaced. There was a huge field for our children to play games on, and the ponies and donkeys wander freely throughout (keep your food under cover!). The kids had plenty of room to ride their bikes safely and we all rode onto forest trails without having to go onto roads at all. The shower block was kept very clean, although you did have to queue for the showers in the evening. There is a lovely pub within easy walking distance across fields, with room for the kids to play while we waited for our food to arrive. The railway line runs along the left hand side of the site. We camped on the right, and did not notice the trains at all. This is an excellent site for families!
