Stayed in the New Forest for the first time since being an adult and loved it! We only booked 2 nights as we're still new to this, but thoroughly recommend it! Staff were friendly and helpful on arrival and we got to choose our own pitch. Lovely natural looking site with lots of nature all around. We were warned about the horses but they really were not a problem at all. Smelt their manure a couple of times but its not a problem! 2 very nice pubs nearby with large outside area. Toilets were clean, with minimal waiting. We had a nice stroll up to Lyndhurst and found a lovely small town with quaint shops and plenty more pubs! There is a well stocked small supermarket about a 1 minute drive from the site. Cant fault the place in anyway, apart from its quite expensive!

My first time camping and a success despite the weather! The campsite has a great choice of areas to pitch in, open areas and under trees, the staff were welcoming and the shower/toilet/washing facilities all you would want. Don't be put off by the train track the trains are infrequent and were a life saver for me as they helped guide me back to my tent after visiting the toilets after dark(do make sure you know exactly where you pitched, things look very different at night). Would recommend this site to all, quiet, very pretty and close enough to shops/villages that you don't feel too isolated. Am looking forward to the spring to have another go at camping and will probably book Ashurst again.

The site is in a beautiful location in the north-east of the New Forest. My first contact with this site was to visit some family that were staying earlier in the year and this prompted our visit.
The booking process was easy. I checked out the on-line booking to see availability before using the telephone. The operator for Forest Holidays was friendly and very knowledgeable so I am pleased that I went for the more tactile approach. If you are staying more than four nights it will be worth becoming a member of the Forest Experience which costs £15 but will save you £3.50 per night if you are not a CC member (Ashurst is a CC site) and you have discounts to local attractions including the Beaulieu Motor Museum. The offers are available at other Forest Holidays campsites,
Our break was in the middle of August and it was very busy. After driving around the site we decided to pitch fairly close to the entrance and near the shower block. Many places were wet and boggy and a previous reviewer suggested that you shouldn’t pitch lower than the road which in view of our weather is a good idea. Our visit thankfully was a dry one. You can pitch where you like so long as it is 6m away from other users.
The policy of no noise after 10:30pm seemed to work though we did find the children riding bikes constantly around the site and weaving between pitches all day a little annoying. A windbreak is recommended here as a screen to help maintain some level of privacy particularly when eating. The site is banked on one side with a train track and a freight train frightened the living daylights out of us with the most astonishing noise at around 2am one morning. Trains do regularly go by but apart from this one episode we were not bothered by them. Another thing to watch out for is the free roaming ponies (and cattle). They have no respect for your belongings and we once found one inside our tent. It is wise to keep rubbish especially food waste placed carefully or preferably disposed of immediately as they are attracted to this. They are not fazed by humans and can turn their backs to kick you.
A problem we did have with the site was as it was so busy, six showers is quite simply inadequate for the amount of people on site as were the washing up facilities. We are fairly early risers so showered as soon as we woke but by 7am there were queues. The campers were generally very good natured though it was sometimes a battle to get to a sink for washing up. With people queuing for showers if you wanted to use the sinks to clean your teeth for example it might have appeared that you were pushing in. The water however was always hot and we were very impressed with this. My wife found that the hairdryer (20p’s needed here) wasn’t working on one of the days but was useable later on.
There are no shops or eateries on site but a short walk will take you to shops and pubs. The various staff that we met were friendly. The food in the pubs did seem a little pricey so if eating out is your thing be prepared to pay well for it. The local eggs from one of the little stores were particularly good.
Friday night (and probably Saturday) can bring out the more raucous behaviour in some people. The Rangers on site were kept busy managing a good job of keeping order. There is a policy of eviction if behaviour is deemed inappropriate and one party of four having not booked were asked to pay £20 per head towards a behaviour bond on top of their pitching costs.
We decided to cut our visit short by one night so we could pack down at a pace and time we wanted. The policy is to vacate by 12 noon although you can pay extra to stay later on the day if there are vacancies.
Would we go again? I think to get the most out of this site you would want to avoid the main holiday period. The washing facilities are just too inadequate when it is busy. I also think it is a little expensive. You just get the meagre washing facilities (including a washing/ironing room) and pitch. There are no shops or restaurants but this for us just added to the appeal and character of staying in the forest. The facilities for children are limited to playing ball games in what open space you can find. Any future visit for us would probably be in May or early June and not during the school holidays.

On arrival it was very busy. We had to drive around for a little while to find a good spot and in the end we waited for someone to leave (this was us just being pickie, but it was a nice pitch amongst the trees)
Get up early if you want a shower as they became very busy, but they were clean. There are plenty of toilets and wash basin cubicles. Plenty of dishwashing facilities but became busy at peak times.
The only thing that we could say was a problem was the lack of supervision by other campers as they're children were riding bikes or running through the pitches (no consideration of others).
There is a train which passes every so often but we became used to it and didn't bother us.
All in all we would definitely go back. The site was clean, staff very helpful, plenty of bins, water points and good site lay out. No parks for children but plenty of tracks for bike rides and and the site offers activities on weekends (i.E bat walks). Pub 5 min walk.
Had a nice few days to relax!

Just returned from a lovely weekend at this campsite - our first time with two young children (3 and 2, though we were once seasoned campers!, plus two groups of friends with children who had never been camping before. We had a fantastic time, the weather blessed us with sunshine which always helps!
The staff are super friendly without being intrusive, you are left to chose your own pitches with just the standard rules about proximity to neighbours. They also seemed to police the night time noise or people self-policed, whatever, it was reasonably quiet after 11.
Although the site was full, you never really felt that you were on top of each other. The shower/loo/washing up/laundry block was great (though our first timer friends weren't overly impressed with the cleanliness- wait til they try some other sites!). We arrived after 3 so the choice of remaining pitches was limited and we ended up right by the trains - which the children LOVED! They waved at every single one and ran out of the tents to see them. I don't think we can come again without pitching next to the trains!
New Forest Ponies roam the site, the woods are literally on your doorstep and there is a good, family-friendly put just five minutes walk from the site. The final bonus is that there are no dogs.
Best thing - relaxed, friendly atmosphere with walks on the doorstep and ponies wondering around.
Two very minor downsides (aside from the train) - you can hear the hum of the road but it is really a very minor issue. No open fires.
Highly recommended for families and first timers as well as those who like the more informal side of camping.

Lovely site, easy to find - signposted from major road. There were 4 of us in two tents, you can pitch anywhere so we pitched nice and close in an excluded bit, which was lovely as the campsite was full and it really didn't seem like it.
Toilets and Showers were spotless, 6 showers in all nice big cubicles and lovely and hot. Hairdryers were 20p but my hair comes down to my bum and I dried it on one 20p!
Staff were really friendly and always wondering around, no electric on the site but for £1 they'll pump the airbed (or whatever) at reception which is really helpful. On our first night there was a group near us that were a bit noisy but someone went over and quietened them down straight away.
One problem I did have was the train that runs very close to one end of the site but after a day you don't notice it really.
There were ponies wandering around the site but they don't come near you unles you give them food.
Didn't go to the pub but it was walking distance, we got indian takeout (next to the pub) which I recommend! Budgens is close by but a tad expensive so I'd try and find somewhere on the way to the site. No shop on site but lots of info and leaflets about surrounding areas.

We stayed here for a weekend in June.
On arrival we quickly got booked in (had pre booked) and the couple on reception were pleasant and efficient. Finding a pitch was easy - we chose one away from the railway and in the trees. Most of the site is wooded and undulating - it pays to find some slightly higher ground since the site can become waterlogged in areas. Pitching away from the railway is also a good idea, although trains are infrequent they do intrude a bit since areas of the site are right next to the line.
The facilities were good - toilet block was clean and can be entered using a code (presumably to ensure that those not camping can't use the loos).
One bonus of this site is that the village of Ashurst is only 5 minutes away with some good pubs (including one that is only over the field from the site and does good beer and food). There's a few shops for essentials, a chippy, etc.
The site is well situated for walks straight into the forest and there are also cycle tracks nearby. Overall well worth a visit.

Stayed here for a long weekend in July 2009. The site is set in the New Forest area. It's a large site which was quite busy though not overcrowded, plenty of choice in terms of where to pitch our tent - under trees or in open areas.
Toilets/showers and washing facilities were usually clean and tidy, plenty of hot water though did run out of paper occasionally.
The staff have been mentioned as being a little over-zealous - this wasn't our experience at all, we found them to be friendly and helpful.
My only criticism is that it was expensive compared to other sites I've visited and we could hear the trains from where we pitched, and for the size of the site, some play area for children would be nice. Overall a relaxing stay.

Stayed here over the early May bank holiday. First time camping as a family.
Great site:
1) Toilet block was clean and water nice and hot. In spite of the place being full, there were plenty of facilities - queuing was minimal
Showers etc included in the price. Hair dryer in ladies operated on 20p coins, I'm told
2) Nice washing up area with lots of sinks and hot water - also included in the price. There is also a launderette I think but we didn't use that
3) Partly wooded campsite so had a lovely ambiance - not just an open field. Ponies wandering about the campsite and since it was spring some had foals (or colts I guess)
4) Parts of the site were water logged but there was plenty of dry ground to camp on. There is higher ground but it is near the railway tracks - occasional train noise but didn't bother us. Better half sleeps with earplugs anyway because of my (alleged) snoring.
5) Literally 5 minute walk from pub and few shops of Ashurst. Lots of nice walks / trails in the forest but beware, some can get very muddy and we had to navigate very carefully. The cycle paths are fine and should stay fairly firm even after rain (which thankfully we didn't have)
Got very crowded over the weekend but there was a friendly family atmosphere. Note as in most Forest Holiday sites, the burning of wood is strictly prohibited. Wardens come round and shine searchlights into your fire to check. We had a coal BBQ every evening though.
In summary a lovely site and we would go back if there weren't so many more sites to discover.

Have just returned from a couple of nights at Ashurst. It's a Forest Holidays site only 15 mins or so from the M27.
Site is a good size with plenty of wooded space around a large central toilet block with dishwashing facilities, water points etc. There are laid out pitches round the site which are a little stoney, but you are allowed to pitch just about anywhere as long as its 6m from the next unit (interestingly we were told that as we were a group of 3 tents we could pitch as close as 3m apart if we wanted). Many tents opted to pitch on the open ground close to the toilet block. We did the opposite and camped right on the outside with a glorious view of the fields with obligatory New Forest horses and cows ambling across them. We couldn't hear the road or train track nearby.
The toilet facilities were immaculate and featured keycoded locks on the doors which I've not come across in a Forestry Commission site before.
We didn't need much shopping but I noticed a Budgens just 5 mins down the road, along with a few other shops. We ate in the 'New Forest' pub just across from the site one night and it was very nice indeed and child friendly.
There's a great walk to Lyndhurst to be had if you check an OS map - few miles across open heath land - really nice. Of course, this area is perfect for walking and cycling anyway.
About the only downside is that it was a bit 'midgy' and we all got bitten whilst sitting outside in the evening so had to retreat into the tents - bit of a shame. Perhaps we were just unlucky with the time of year?
I'd definitely go back - lovely site - although check prices - Forest Holidays are not the cheapest in the world, especially for bank holidays!
