We had our 1st family camping trip to Ashurst as it's less than 90 minutes from home so ideal for beginners. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay. We have 2 children under 6 who were thrilled at the open space available to them and spent most of the time exploring and running around. The site accommodates approx 300 pitches and we didn't arrive until about 4pm however we found a great pitch under some trees on the edge of the field which meant the kids could run around whilst we pitched the tent. I was happy that we were not surrounded by lots of other campers as do like some privacy and by being on the edge of the site, it mean't we weren't part of a 'thorough-fare'. I had read previous comments about being close to the train track so purposely tried to pitch as far away as possible. We were situated near the a35 and to be honest hadn't appreciated how much traffic does use the road. We did hear the road a lot on our 1st night (we live in a quiet street so don't hear much road noise) however we did not hear much the 2nd night and I think if we'd stayed longer, it wouldn't have been an issue at all. We woke to ponies which delighted the boys! I found the wardens very helpful and did not have any issues.
The toilet block was larger than I expected however I recommend getting to the block early if you do not want to wait for a shower! The showers themselves were great - really hot & quite powerful - again unexpected! I recommend shoes to wear in the shower as they can get a little muddy. The staff were noted on quite a few occasions during the day to clean and ensure lots of toilet roll & soap! So no concerns there! We left it too late to hire bikes so know for next time to sort it out before we arrive!
We had a few drinks at the 'New Forest' Pub - very nice, with excellent children's facilities. This was quite expensive so more of a treat as we had brought drink with us for the evening. We had a lovely long walk with the kids on Saturday and truely felt relaxed and enjoyed the scenery. I would definitely recommend Ashurst and I hope to try and squeeze in another break to the site this year!

Returned to this campsite and was very disappointed. The staff (as mentioned in many previous reviews) were not good at handling situations other than check-in without coming across as heavy-handed. They were always wandering round intrusively whilst you were trying to have breakfast or dinner or get children dressed. The only time they weren't there was at 6am when kids started playing noisily and waking everyone up. Also, despite the site being nowhere near half full, there were still long queues for showers, nowhere near enough, especially when this site is so expensive. The facilities were clean enough though. The ponies were cute, but this time there were also about 10 cows wandering about and making a real racket.
The other disappointing thing was that the pub next door has gone downhill. The food isn't as good as it was, portion sizes are much reduced, and the prices are still just as steep. £10 for an average ploughmans is extortionate. The beer is still good though.
Although the location is reasonably convenient for motorways etc (hence quite a lot of traffic noise from the main road), going through Lyndhurst was a nightmare every day due to long traffic queues. And you have to go through Lyndhurst to get to the rest of the New Forest and the coast. So overall, it's actually probably less convenient than the other sites nearby.

Arrived at site and enquired as to whether they might be able to give a hand if I required it to erect tent due to a prolapsed disc which is awaiting surgery. Not very helpful at all and I was considering joining cc&c not on your nelly now
Site had lots of rain earlier and days before so very wet as drainage not very good at all. Facilities very good showers good lots of water points around the site.
New Forest ponies and cows walk freely through the site and will quite happily walk in your tent. People forget these are not cute domesticated animals they are wild and will bite, kick and trample anyone in there path. Saw with my own eyes a child get bitten and an adult narrowly escaping a kick - not the animals fault!
Loads of woods and open ground for the kids to play out in. Personally would not stay as price too high and ground unreliable. Some staff lovely and most helpful.
Not for us this site shame as area great will camp elsewhere nice farm site must be nearby.

This was my second visit to Ashurst. Great site. Staff helpful and friendly and the showers and toilets were always spottless. We were a bit unlucky with the weather, but hey, it's England-It rains! We had fun though with a BBQ one night and a meal in the pub right next door, The New Forest. The site no longer mentions or recommends the New Forest pub but seems to think The Happy Cheese is the bees knees. The name put me off straight away. I think they suggest the Cheese as they are in partnership with the Forestry Commission for bike hire. We had a drink in there, and limited to just the one. The bar area seemed 'worn' the toilets dingy and smelly and the staff miserable. The New Forest pub however was probably one of the nicest pubs in the area, and right next door to the site. The staff were superb, the food was brilliant and sensibly priced and the whole pub was cosy, clean and very well maintained with spotless toilets (always judge a pub by the gents!). The outside areas were well maintained, clean patio areas, nice seating etc. Seems they do BBQs on teh patio as well. My advice: Great site all round, use the New Forest pub, not the Cheese. Happy camping

We stayed at Ashurst last weekend and had a great time. I love the fact that we could pitch right next to the forest so the children could play whilst we could relax with a coffee - everyone was happy! The facilities are more than adequate for the nature of the site with an never ending supply of astonishingly hot water. The Wardens are very friendly and helpful and regularly patrol to collect litter and check that everyone is happy. Nice and quiet in the evenings. If you want a relaxing break in the forest then I would definitely recommend this site.

We arrived on a rainy Friday to a tepid reception from the counter staff who seemed somewhat reluctant to answer questions about whether our friends had checked in to the site and hostile to a request to look around before paying to stay.
Once we had paid and listened to the rules, we entered. A great site (it's best to camp in the wooded area away form the railway line if dry) it had trees, grass, ponies, nearby takeaways and cafes, as well as great access to the forest.
The showers and toilets were spotless, despite the damp weather. There was a rigorously imposed curfew of quietness at 10:30 pm, which suited us just fine.
If the weather is wet, avoid any hollows in the wooded area as these fill with water.

We picked the wettest weekend of the year to visit Ashurst, and this certainly spoilt proceedings, but there's nothing that can be done about that.
Our final day was good, weather-wise, and this is when we saw what is truly on offer.
The children quickly made friends and we didn't see them again for 2 hours. I think they were as relieved as us simply to get out and about to explore!
To the site itself.
We were greeted by efficient check-in staff. And several ponies!
We were allowed to pitch anywhere we chose. Take a drive around the site before deciding, there are numerous nooks & crannys to pitch up.
Wherever you decide to stop, you're no more than 100 yards from the forest itself, most being nearer.
The toilet/shower facilities were excellent. Hot water always readily available, no waiting and great washing up facilities, the best we've come across so far.
Lots of space to take a stroll throughout the the grounds without entering the forest.
There are rangers wandering around making sure things are in order, and keeping any potential noise down after 10. 30pm (not that we heard anything), but they're a wealth of knowledge about all things to do with the site and the forest itself.
The only gripe (and it's very small) is the lack of a small shop selling the essentials. With nearly 300 pitches on site, the'd make a fortune in eggs & bacon alone!
Weather aside, this is a very good site with everything you'd expect from camping in The new Forest. Thoroughly recommended.

Ashurst is a 280 pitch site set in beautiful forest surroundings. Unfortunately the main train line going to London / Poole is a busy and noisy line. The road traffic can also be heard from our pitch and overall this is definitely not a peaceful site. 280 pitches with 6 showers in the Ladies and 6 showers in the Men's - Do the maths! There are 7 dishwashing basins and be prepared to queue. We found it difficult to pitch our Bearlake 6 as the site was busy also when we found a pitch we could not get our metal tent pegs into the ground. The forest surroundings however are beautiful and we did enjoy a cycle around the forest. The local pub The Happy cheese served nice food although slightly expensive and the New Forest pub was really friendly.

We stayed the second weekend of half term and the site was full one of the nights. However, of the 'big' Forestry Commission sites in the New Forest (Roundhill, Hollands Wood, Holmsley) this is the smallest and the least densely packed.
There was space around us that in other sites would definitely be pressed into use as extra pitches. I asked one of the staff, and he said it was because when it gets wet, they do have problems with areas becoming unusably waterlogged, so they have to keep the total numbers down. But it makes for a great relaxed feel in the dry - we pitched in the trees and it felt more like a small site.
I'd looked at the site map in advance and chose a pitch in a glade in the trees on the far side from both the railway and the road and we weren't bothered by noise from either.
The staff are quite active, walking/cycling round and chatting. We see that as a good thing, not at all as being officious. They do enforce rules about noise but that's exactly what we want, it contributes to the feel of a smaller, quieter campsite despite actually being 280 pitches, it was good having confidence the site would quiten down at night. W
e had friendly chats with several of them, including one we met out for a walk in the surrounding forest who recognised us which adds to the personal feel.
Cleanliness was good - as well as closing each half of the facilities in turn for a proper clean, they walk round during peak times just doing a bit of wiping and sweeping to keep things adequately clean.
The only slight drawback I would say is the location, on the edge of the Forest. Half an hour quicker to get to from London, but further to go to activities and sites.
The network of cycle paths in the Forest that lead from the site itself is not quite as extensive as some of the other sites, and to get to Lyndhurst means a three-mile cycle along the rather boring paved path alongside the main road.

We have visited this site 3 times, each at different times of the season. At all times we've found the staff to be friendly and helpful. There are rules to follow, but all are there to ensure an enjoyable stay for campers.
We don't like late noise or large parties so it suits us. The facilities are always immaculate and well-stocked. There's a free choice of pitches, some shady some open and sunny.
We have found some a bit water-logged in our autumn visits though. The resident ponies do roam around the site, so care must be taken not to leave food lying around, but that probably applies to wildlife in any location.
We've always pitched near to the railway line but never really been disturbed by noise. A good all-round site.
