We found this site to be very clean and well presented.
The horses were free roaming but as long as you did not store food in your tent, they left you alone.
There is a railway line running along the campsite but as long as you did not camp near the line, they were hardly noticed.
There are wardens on site to ensure that everyone respects the site rules.
The site is situated on the edge of the New Forest and feels very rural.
I would suggest a drive to Lyndhurst for your shopping needs.

We chose this site as it was easily accessible via train, as we chose not to bring a car. It was very accessible with regular trains (although these were rather audible from the site itself).
We struggled initially - we arrived early evening on the Friday and there was nowhere to put our tent up, even our tiny two man tent. We had to settle for some very stony twiggy ground under a tree but had no other options.
The staff were helpful - offering cheap services to blow up airbeds, sell batteries, loan iceblocks etc.
We paid the extra to stay late on the sunday, and were told that was okay but they were full up on the Saturday - they turned many people away who were asking to stay late on the Saturday. However by 5pm Saturday the site was half empty! It didn't seem very well organised and I'd have been quite disappointed had I been part of a group that had people turned away.
The site itself was quite pretty, and having the ponies walking through was lovely. Horses also walked through which was quite a shock when one stuck its head in our tent to eat food!
There's limited local amenities but typical for a rural site. Bus service is very good.

This is a very pretty campsite on the edge of the New Forest. One minute you are on the main road, the next you are driving slowly past the horses and cows inside the campsite.
It is a very big site and can take 200 units. I think it was probably 60%-70% full while we were there and didn't feel crowded.
There is a combination of shade and open areas for you to choose from.
The toilets and showers are clean and warm.
The only bad point about this site is the staff who are so uptight about every rule that you can feel scared to breath at the wrong time. Still I guess the rules are there for a reason. Just a shame that they don't go about enforcing them with a bit more of a smile and less of a power trip.

It is a very clean and well presented campsite. The toilets and wash rooms were of great clean standards. The staff were of exceptional high standards and very friendly.
You were able to choose where ever you wanted to pitch your tent as long as you are so many feet away from another tent for safety reasons. I would recommend this camp site to any one.
My views of Ashurst which is a 5 minute walk I have to say is a great village with good pubs and local shops but I used to live in Ashurst. For a long stay I would say that you would need a car.
You can't pitch before noon unless you pay a fee of 3 ponds and the same on departure you have to vacate before noon unless you pay a £3 fee to stay on site until 17:30. We felt really comfortable for our children safety and we will be using this site for weekends away when we want to be local.
The only thing I would have liked to have seen is a play ground for the children. It doesn't have electric hook ups but that is because of being in the forest. Its good to be back to nature rather than relying on

We love Ashurst camp site!
We keep going back time and time again and we're never disappointed. The team do a great job of making you feel welcome and keeping the site in great condition.
There are a couple of pubs (and other amenities) within walking distance - which is always handy.
For us, it's perfectly situated in the New Forest, without being hours and hours away (we're in Basingstoke and can get there in less than an hour).
We always try other sites too, but keep coming back to Ashurst.
As another reviewer said, it feels like home for us.

Well back to Ashurst in the New Forest. We feel like we are coming home every time. Phoned up at 6pm on Fri and was pitched up by 7.30 with no problems at all. Sue and the team make us feel very welcome every time we visit with our two children 5year old boy and 15 year old girl.
The showers are very good, always clean and plenty of hot water. The pitches are level in most places. We pitch up in different places around the site and have had no problem with road noise, yes the trains do go past the site but the noise isn't that noticeable.
We are looking forward to many more nights at Ashurst and to see the team again which do a fantastic job. If you do visit try the two local pubs, they are very good and the food is great and both in walking distance. 5 mins across the field from the site.

Spent 5 days here, We only booked for the weekend but enjoyed it so much that we decided to stay on for a few more days. The site was very busy, but we had plenty of room once we found a spot. The toilet block was always clean, plenty of toilets. The longest I waited for a shower was about 5 mins bearing in mind it was the first week in August I don't think this was too bad.
Plenty of walks to pass the time, and a lovely pub nearby. There is a small supermarket within walking distance too.
I did think that the price to stay here was quite expensive, but it certainly wouldn't put me off going back. Already booked to go twice this year.

We've been there few times now and we had a great time, good toilet blocks, nice and clean, and the people are very nice too, you can order croissants from the day before there is a fab bus service outside, the buses are spot on time, goes into few towns enroute to a seaside town with a pier. Lovely. Nice restaurants around campsite, and train station too. Nice and level and spacious fab. And not forgetting the lovely ponies walking around too. We are now frequent visitors !

There are 280 pitches on this level site but the choice of wooded or open areas and the freedom to choose where to pitch avoids the feeling of a large park, although the site was not that busy during our stay. On our second night we moved to another spot, simply to enjoy a different view. There are the usual facilities, which are modern and clean, a payphone, launderette and tourist information at reception but no hook-up. Horses and the beautiful New Forest ponies wander the site, cattle graze in an adjoining field, squirrels leap from trees and a robin sat with us outside our ‘van. There is a mixture of tourers, no hard standings and because of the resident wildlife, no dogs are permitted. The site is on the main road into Lyndhurst and the faint whoosh of traffic can be heard but the road is not visible. At the time we stayed the pitch fee was £16.00 but those aged 55+ qualify for a concession, reducing the fee to £12.50.
We strolled into the forest from the site and had a wonderful morning exploring the woods and the heather clad fields, coming across numerous horses grazing or drinking from a stream. The site is a five minute walk from Ashurst, which has a railway station, two pubs that serve food and a parade of shops that includes an Indian restaurant, a bistro (closed Mondays) and a Chinese take-away, which we used and found satisfactory. There is a short-cut across the field next to the site but a torch is required at night. There is a bus route between Ashurst and the lovely small town of Lyndhurst, which is under three miles away and where there is good parking, an information centre, a large camping shop, pubs, cafés and restaurants. We had a very enjoyable meal in the ’Passage to India’. The aroma of flavoured coffee lures you into ‘Pages of Lyndhurst’ where the proprietor will offer you tasters of the locally produced scrumpy and assorted wines, which include silver birch and nettle!

A lovely site with friendly staff ideally located for easy access.
The campsite is in the forest so there are lots of little glades among the trees so although it's big, it didn't feel it to us. Finding a space took a while but once we did it was shaded and offered privacy from other campers, lovely! For the very big tents, caravans and motorhomes they seemed to use the open area which by Friday evening looked really busy and not much privacy. We did get a couple of visits from ponies but didn't cause us any trouble. They really are very bold though so make sure all food is in sealed boxes and get rid of rubbish straight away. Another word of advice - you will need a torch at night, because the site is so big and with all the trees it really is pitch black so finding your way back from loo block would be very difficult.
The facilities were clean and modern. There were plenty of water points, bins and recycling. The toilet block had plenty of toilets and sinks in cubicles. However there are only 6 showers in the ladies, 3 on each side of the block - (I assume same for gents) so when all 250 pitches are full the queues could probably get quite long. When at 7am on the first night I went for a shower there was a queue of 3 people, I'd guess the queue got longer later in the morning! Considering the numbers of people using the facilities they were kept surprisingly clean and never ran out of toilet roll or soap. The washing up facilities however were a bit over-stretched. The layout of the area wasn't great so not much room and very busy.
A great location, coming by car we found it easily. However it's also only 5 minutes walk from the train station (about 1hr 30min direct from Waterloo I think), 2 pubs and a few little shops. You can walk straight into the forest from the campsite - leaflets available from reception. Lyndhurst, a town with pubs, shops and even camping shop is about 2 or 3 miles nice walk across the fields, past the ponies or there's a bus stop right outside campsite. So if you fancied a camping trip, but without a car I'd recommend this one! As we didn't use the car all weekend, when we went to leave the car wouldn't start. The staff were so helpful - even tried to give us a battery boost.
The downside of this site is that the road and train line can be heard. The train line wasn't much of a problem, although trains could be heard they weren't that often. The road was more persistent, the hum could be heard until late into the evening. I suppose to have the convenience of being easily accessible it's an unfortunate downside.
A great site I'd recommend for a short break - but make sure you book ahead as it does get busy!
