Have been coming since the 70's to this site and it has been much improved since then with nice clean toilets and free hot showers.
It isn't that cheap compared with some sites, with no adventure play areas for children, but the surroundings are lovely with good walks in pretty much any direction and cheeky little ponies wandering around everywhere.
We did get caught short of food and not much cash one night though, and made the big mistake of venturing over the railway bridge into Ashurst village where we had the worst take away Pizza in the world.!
Other than that, all good.

Decided to go camping on my own this year with no car and everything else in a rucksack on my back. I found it surprisingly easy to get to Ashurst from the Isle of Wight ferry terminal where my journey started from. By using a train from Lymington I was able to change once at Brockenhurst and then catch another train that took me to my destination.
The campsite itself is typical of new forest forestry campsites. I was surprised to find that there was quite a choice of pitches, but as I stayed midweek I managed to miss the usual weekend rush that happens a lot in the new forest.
The washing and toilet facilities are very smart and clean and a pleasure to use. There are also plenty of bins as it is important that all rubbish is out of reach of the local livestock that frequent the forest.
I really like this site as it is only 2 miles from the beautiful town of Lyndhurst and makes a great base if you want to explore the area on foot. However there are several points that you should be aware of.
Be prepared to share the campsite with the dozens of new forest ponies and cattle that roam the area (keep all food sealed and rubbish in bins when animals are about).
The train runs alongside the campsite so if you are a light sleeper, do as I do and take ear plugs. Finally just be aware of the area where you pitch your tent if rain is expected. Some of these pitching areas lie below the height of the roadways that travel around the site. These areas hold water during persistent rain as I found to my cost.
All in all I enjoyed my stay at this site and although I travelled alone I found both the campers and staff very friendly and chatty. I Would recommend this site to anyone who wants to experience the new forest and is prepared for quiet and peaceful evenings. Forgot to mention the pub that is just 5 mins away, that produces great food (including breakfast) and a place to sink a cold pint after a hot summers day.

Stayed here because Hollands Wood was wet. I know it's amazing in August. Anyhow after a bit of a queue getting in we found a pitch next to the train track. The trains are not frequent so it was no bother to pitch there. 5 minutes away are 2 excellent pubs that do food. And a selection of shops and take aways. So it was fish and chips on night 1. The shower block (only one) was busy the following morning and cubicles left dirty but overall I was happy with the facilities on offer. Night 2 was a BBQ and we left on Sunday after a very sunny and relaxing day. For location I would choose Ashurst being so close to great pubs and shops and still feeling like being in the forest. But I liked Hollands Wood shower blocks better (cleaner and quieter) and the site felt more private and with many more places to pitch and hideaway. Still worth a visit, you won't go away unhappy.

We often visit the new forest for a weekend break and decided to try this site after having read the reviews on this site. We arrived at about lunchtime on Saturday and the site was almost full, but we managed to find a spot with the most glorious views over the forest. Many of the other tents seemed on top of each. The ground was ok, the normal pegs went in with relative ease. The toilet block was clean despite being busy. The site was well located near pubs, shops and a quick bike ride into Lyndhurst. The only down side I could see was the cost, at £22.50 for a night for 2 people and a tent, this is the most expensive site I ahve stayed at, and I wouldn't say that the facilities really warranted being charged so much. Saturday night was very busy with weekend campers but most were quiet by about 11 and the train line and noise from the road weren't too bad. All in all an ok site but expensive for what was on offer.

I thought this was a really pretty campsite set in nice surroundings. However we made the mistake of pitching fairly close to the train line and got woken up early in the mornings by trains passing so watch out for that! I'm sure the noise would be no problem further away. The toilet and shower block was modern although had got into a bit of a state by later in the day but we might just have been unlucky. There is a pub within a few mins walk of the site however we didn't go in so I can't say what it was like - looked nice from the outside though.
The gray horse however is a MENACE and you can't turn your back on it for a second or it will be in your tent looking for food.

Clean tidy, well presented good facilities. Great pub at the end of the drive, the village is not far away.
Watch the ponies late at night though.
Try not to pitch near to the railway track as you tend to notice the Bournemouth bound trains rattling through.
Somewhere we'll return too though for a weekend escape.

My first visit to this site and I would recommend it to anybody, friendly staff and a well run site.
The toilet block and washing up area where clean and we did get pestered by the odd pony but to me this is all part of the charm of camping in the New Forest. The local pubs n shops where within easy walking distance of the site and I would recommend The Happy Cheese where the food and beer was good value.
The only down side was the busy train track which ran along one side of the site but we heeded the advice left on this site by other users and pitched our tent toward the middle of the site so it wasnt really a problem.

Arrived on a Monday, booking in was painless and we were told to find our own space making sure we were more than 6 metres from the nearest camper. We drove round a few times and really couldn't find anything that we were happy with.
When we did find somewhere and had got the tent out we found the ground seemed to have layers of stones and gravel below the topsoil, meaning we bent a lot of our pegs trying to get the tent up. This is obviously a known problem as the site sells 'rock' pegs but I found these too long. The best pegs were from Blacks which are hardened steel with tapered ends.
The shower blocks are very clean but can get busy, there is a good clothes wash room with two washers and two dryers.
Horses are a major problem, do not keep any food in your tent as they will and do come in to a tent looking. The white pony appears to be worst, he managed to stamp on my foot as I was twisting him out of our tent and the day before we'd arrived he'd kicked a young girl. Warn children to keep away from the horses.
A lot of people packed up on Friday and I think they knew what they were doing, there were a lot of 'weekend' campers arrived during Friday and the mood of the campsite completely changed, it become more rowdy and noisy. Friday night was atrocious! There was shouting, music and general hubbub until at least 1.30 am. It wasn't from one particular party, it was all around. I went and complained the following day and the wardens said they'd warned some people but there's obviously very little they can do at the time.
We left on the Saturday (a day early) as I wasn't going to risk the noise again. If we were going to such a site again I would go during the week and leave the weekends to the brainless ones.

Myself and my husband just returned from a 2 night break at Ashurst. Luckily we had the most fantastic weather, a real scorcher. We arrived 8am on Friday morning. A sign at the entrance said we could find a pitch and set up before the office opened at 9am. Being school holidays we knew it would be busy and did book in advance, which was wise as the pitches left were few and far between. This said, there was more than enough room between tents/caravans. The shower block was very clean although did become very busy, even very early in the morning. The rangers are very helpful and friendly and are quick to stop rule breaking (the rules are more of a safety feature than to spoil fun). The horses (especially the grey one) are extremely cheeky. They appear out of nowhere and just walk into tents searching for anything that takes their fancy. A few tents were wiped out by these cumbersome chaps. We realised early on that zipping up the tent puts them off and they trot off to their next victim. Very funny to watch if youre not on the receiving end of it! There is a large pub within 3 minutes walk, just across the field adjacent to the site. A style leeds straight into the large pub garden, so no need to drive if you would like a few drinks.I would go back to this site as I have no complaints, although we are trying to get to see the other forest holiday sites before the year is out.

Just returned from a last-minute 2 night stop at this site. On arrival, we were advised parts of the site were waterlogged due to a traditional British summer downpour a few days prior. However, the warden pointed out the best places to site-up camp, and we weren't disappointed!
The site is very level and flat with some great spots nestled in amongst the trees and bushes providing natural windbreaks.
Although only 1 shower block it was spotlessly clean. However, one half was closed (due demand until the schools break up- I hope!) so only 3m and 3f showers available and my boyfriend had to queue briefly.
Excellent pub adjacent to the site - the New Forest Inn and I can recommend the lamb! Lyndhurst only 2mins by car or if you are feeling engergetic, @ 30mins walk along a straight road.
Keep food in your car and your tent zipped up or else you'll get 'the fab 4' trying to enter your tent. 1 grey and 3 chestnut horses. Keep your eye on the grey-she's the cheeky one!
Apart from a noisy school/youthclub group with a flagrant disregard to the 10pm quiet rule, the only downside was the railway track along the left side of the site. Average 3 small trains per hour (less on a sunday) so not overly distracting.
Have stayed at Hollands Wood before and found ourselves drawing comparisons between the 2. Personally I preferred this one as it is smaller and more intimate, even with the trains!
