Quiet campsite located on the edge of the New Forest near Lyndhurst.
Single wash block located centrally.
Site generally flat which made pitching the tent simple, and sleeping comfortable!
Regular visits for ponies / horses that roam freely adds a different dimension; food must be kept well stored else its sniffed out and eaten.
Excellent walking and mountain bike trails close by.
Wardens friendly and helpful.

We are frequent visitors to the Forest, but quite inexperienced campers.
We visited Ashurst with some friends with other tents who know their way around camping and chose the site for the group. I think that we may have been spoilt by their choice.
Positives:
The toilets / showers / washing facilities are spotless and the site has a well run feel about it. Lashings of hot water for cleaning up, showering in the heated block. We did not use any other facilities.
Negatives:
Hard to find any negatives really except I felt that despite the quality of the showers, £26 a night was a tad strong to pitch a tent (or in our case, £104 for four tents per night actually), but I guess the hot water is included, and frankly I do not have a lot to reference except hotels. Glad I took the 4x4 rather than one of the lower, sportier cars as there are quite a few large potholes in the campsite roads. But at least it keeps the speeds down.
General:
We wanted to pitch 4 tents together, but there is no facility to reserve pitches at this site. So we got there early on the Friday and had no problem finding enough space.
Rules / H&S are explained clearly on entry, and the site is well patrolled by wardens who are very reasonable with their advice. They also do not drink on duty (yes, we offered the one we were chatting to).
You can pitch where you want (usual distance apart rules apply) which was good for us lot with 4 tents. Following recent rain, some areas of the site were quite boggy and unusable but our area was dry.
There is a pub close by which we used on the Friday. Food was good, and pretty much standard pricing for the style of restaurant at just shy of £200 for 8 of us, 2 courses including some wine and beer.
Lyndhurst is 5 minutes away by car with some quaint shops, a small Budgens for supplies, the New Forest Visitor Centre for info, and car parking at 80p for an hour is not too bad either.
Horses and cows roam free on the site, which was nice for us although some of the horses are less than friendly if you get too close. Squirrels are also about on site.
We went for a walk on the Saturday morning, and after about a mile could see deer in the distance. Ashurst is not exactly the depths of the Forest, but it is still a nice area, and you should see some wildlife if you get out for a walk.
Take hard ground pegs - there is a lot of stone a few inches down which makes wire pegs nearly useless, or at least very time consuming to get in. I chose to buy these when I bought the rest of the camping gear, and am glad I did as they just melted the nasty stuff below the soil.
Overall, a good quality, well run, friendly but I'm my inexperienced opinion, slightly expensive introduction to tent living. I am sure we will return at some stage.

We spent 5 nights at the campsite, Monday to Friday before the August bank holiday. Our plan paid off as the campsite was only half full, with most campers opting to wait until the bank holiday weekend.
Very impressed with site, toilets, showers and wash basins clean, free showers, lots of hot water (too hot at times)and reasonably sized cubicles. Was very impressed to find wardens in the shower blocks at 10pm making sure everything was still clean and tidy.
Plenty of dish washing sinks too including a low sink for the little ones to get involved which my daughter loved, so made the most of while it lasts!
They have a family room too for which you need to pay a £20 deposit and get a key for. Made it easier with our 2 year old son to have a shower and get him ready for bed. Again this was kept clean and tidy.
You can decide where to pitch on this site, we chose a spot down by the train line, within 50m of it, although you can choose to pitch well away from it you choose to. Most people do which is why we choose to pitch here, it was less busy and actually much quieter. The trains do run through here past midnight, but we found it less noisy than the other side of the camp where kids were running wild. It's just easier to filter out trains than human voices.
For the first 4 nights the campsite quitened down by 20:30-2100 allowing us to put our 2 year old to bed. On the 5th night, the Friday before the bank holiday weekend a lot of new campers arrived and one set woke me up several times talking very loudly until near midnight.
The wardens do come and check around 10:30 to make sure it's quiet which is why we chose this site, but on this occasion it was lashing down with rain and so you couldn't hear anything above the rain until later on when the wardens would have turned in for the night.
The wardens are brilliant here. Very helpful, when the rain got heavy they put their coats on and came around and checked all were OK. We left our porch open and while out it started raining, we think one of the wardens came over and zipped it up for us and turned the flaps down to keep it dry while we were out.
Now the the downsides. After heavy rain it's obvious parts of the site got muddy, to compound it the mud was then churned up by the ponies so had become very uneven and 'bumpy'. OK for as we could avoid it but maybe a problem if the site is busy.
The second negative is the ponies. Sure, they look lovely but my 2 year old was bitten within 5 minutes of arriving. We put the picnic blanket out for the kids and gave them lunch to keep them happy while we got the tent up and this pony just walked over and bit him to get to his sarnie before I could put myself in between. We then had a bit of shoving match which I eventually won, but we where very careful about eating outside after that. My little boy was OK and just suffered a red mark on his hand.
While at the campsite we visited the new forest wildlife centre which was excellent and the new forest visitor centre which was great for small children.
Overall, very good, would go again, but will avoid the weekends.

We found this to be an excellent site, plenty of local knowledge and advice from the staff. Ponies and old breed cattle wander through the site at various times of the day which is a real treat for the kids but make sure no food is left unguarded because the ponies are thieves and will even go in to unsecured tents after goodies.
Toilet and shower blocks immaculate clean and shops and amenities nearby, adjacent to railway station so a bit of train noise. Good bike hire service available, they drop off and collect, decent bikes at a reasonable price. Ground was quite hard at our pitch so rock pegs came in handy. All in all clean well run site with plenty to see and do locally.

This was our first visit to the New Forest and we enjoyed our 3 night stay in Ashurst. The site was easy to find with the instructions from the book. We were warmly welcomed and given our map of the site and a few rules. – nothing major just the no fires from wood within the forest really.
You find your own pitch on this site for your own needs. There is a large selection of different types to go for, some people were deep in the woods on their own, others were grouped together in larger “enclaves”. We picked a place in the sunshine in the open with a gravel base to avoid any sinking issues. At the weekend the site filled up a lot more and choosing an ideal pitch would have been made a lot harder. The rangers like to have a 6m spacing between units/tents and were out enforcing this. No gazebo during high season rule is in force and in lower seasons it costs £10 a night for one.
The toilet block was very good and had two sides to it with the same facilities. If the person before me turned left at the gents door I would go right and to the other side (most people appeared to turn left). Codes needed to enter the block. No electricity on the site at all. Most of the campers on this site are in tents. There were a few motorhomes and less caravans.
You have direct forest access from the site in a corner for walking and cycling. We saw deer playing in the woods plus the squirrels on site in and out of tents and the ponies walking around the site and having a good look at the campers. We had no noise issues from other people at all and everyone we saw were friendly. Nearby we visited the new forest wildlife park which was an excellent day out enjoyed by myself, wife and 6 y/o daughter.
The village isn’t far away and there is a pub near to the site entrance which looked popular. Another pub was a little further away and some shops and takeaways. We didn’t use any of these though. There is a railway station next door to the 1st pub with trains towards Bournemouth and London. In order to get to Lymington for the IoW ferry you need to change at Brockenhurst.
Lyndhurst isn’t far and there is a cycle path along the road. There are more shops, pubs and a Tesco Metro here.

Booked for 7 days stayed for 10. Facilities were nice and clean although a little busy at times. I drove down on the Sunday and didn't get in my car till the following Thursday this was due to the railway stn only being 5 minutes walk away.
Happy Cheese Pub did reasonably priced food and was visited more than once. This was the first site we had used which didn't have EHU but it didn't spoil our break and we are now a lot wiser for the experience. (Don't buy too many perishables as they wont last). Nice to wake up in the morning and see the ponies strolling through the site. Will definitely visit again.

Originally booked to stay for 3 nights but came back after the 2nd night due to the weather. Apart from that, really enjoyed the camp site.
The 'rangers' were very kind and helpful; it was only me and my 2 year old camping and they were determined to help me put my tent up!
The showers / toilet block were clean. You need a code to access the building which is good as the site is on open land (apparently) however, not good if you have a bad memory (like me!)
The surrounding of the site is very nice and I would love to go back when the weather is dry! Unfortunately when we went it just rained and slugs kept getting into my tent. !
Another thing to remember is to make sure you zip up your tent when you are out and that you throw away any rubbish outside your tent as the ponies love ripping up rubbish bags. And the squirrels love trying to get into your tent! They literally love stealing ANY food, even spicy sausages!
My daughter loved how much space there was around us and because of the rain, loved the puddles!
I would recommend this site and will definitely go back next year!

We returned yesterday from Ashurst campsite after spending 3 nights under canvas. The site was easy to find and the most beautiful setting. I had paid a deposit and settled the rest when arrived, with no problems. The staff are extremely friendly, very informative and the site is managed brilliantly. You have permits for car and tent, codes to get into facilities and the staff are firm but fair when it comes to managing noise / site terms and conditions and appropriate behaviour. We loved being surrounded by the ponies who happy strolled around the tent (we had no issues with intrusion). We went to cycle and that we did! We did 2 routes off of the site and cycled to Lynhurst 2 miles away, twice. One of the site rangers told us about a steam train which would be passing under the bridge just off of the site, up one of the cycle paths - a sight to behold! Thank you Ashurst for a fab camping holiday and we will be back!

This is a lovely site among trees - very close to Southampton but you wouldn't know it. We arrived late afternoon and had to pitch near the railway line. It wasn't much of an issue though. The site had been flooded in parts the day before due to freak rain so best to pitch on a slightly elevated ground. We chose Forest holidays because of the strict no noise policy after 10. 30pm. We were very unlucky to be bothered both nights we camped by other campers having a laugh to the small hours. I thought the camp was patrolled for such behaviour but apparently not through the night. Rangers were very good and said they need to be alerted to such behaviour but on arrival we weren't told where/how to contact Rangers or we would have done so. It put a real blight on what was otherwise a fantastic site. The facilities are very clean and well kept. I think if Forest Holidays are going to market themselves as family campsites with a no-noise policy they need to ban all male groups and have a way of enforcing the policy.

Just back from our second visit to Ashurst with 2 sons aged 12 and 8. We just missed a heavy rainfall the previous night so were able to avoid the obvious boggy patches where puddles form. Wardens were helpful and worked hard to keep the site and facilities looking good. Yes there are rules but they are there to keep the site running well and I never felt that the wardens were overbearing. The boys spent a good deal of time amusing themselves by riding their bikes round the site, though we also went out on the bike trails through the forest. Although there isn't a shop on site, the Co-Op in Ashurst village is only 10 mins walk away and has a pretty good selection. We also shopped at Morrisons near Totton while we were out and about. We got fish and chips from the Friendly Friar one night which were great, freshly cooked while we waited. Showers and toilets were always clean, even though the site was busy. I had to wait a few minutes for the potwash on a couple of occasions but there are enough sinks that a free one comes available pretty rapidly. The site was generally peaceful; there were a couple of slightly loud family groups near us but even they were quiet after about 11pm. We stayed 4 nights, Mon-Fri, and my sons are adamant that they want to return for a 3rd visit next summer!
