We spent 5 nights over the May half term break.

Parts of the site are located within the fringes of the forest (under the trees) and part in open clearing. The site is frequented by New Forest Pony’s and squirrels which the children loved. We were lucky enough to see a small foal being born on the site. The site is mostly frequented by tents and motor homes (possibly due to the fact that there is no electricity on site).

This is large site (approx 250 pitches) but the way it is laid out means that you are not aware of the campsite’s size unless you cycle around it.

The campsite is excellent and the facilities are very well maintained. Although towards the end of our break they did start to become slightly dirty due to the number of people on the site. There is one central was block, so if you have young children this is something to consider when choosing your pitch. We occasionally had to queue for the showers and washing up, but no worse than at other sites during peak periods.

I would disagree with the previous comments regarding the staff, they were all very friendly and courteous throughout our stay. The rules on the site meant that the noise had died down by around 10:30 – 11:00pm.

We found no major issues with the noise from the train or the road, but some pitches are close to the rail line.

The site is excellent for children and there is no need for a playground, the adjacent common woods and cycle trail provide the maximum enjoyment any child would need.

The only minor drawback I would have with the site is its location, in order to access the majority of the New Forest’s cycle paths you need to cycle to Lyndhurst along a cycle path along a main road (which needs crossing). You need to be aware of this if you have young children.

Overall this is an excellent site and we would recommend it to anyone.

Very accommodating last min booking over the Easter Bank Holiday. Good level pitches, with a choice of ground, open field, or under trees etc.

Toilets, showers very clean and code door entry. No shop on site, but a co-op just ten mins walk into the village (fresh baked bread - yummy).

Pub at the entrance to the site, did excellent home cooked meals, which were reasonably priced, with outdoor seating area.

Plenty of walks directly from the site to explore the forest and if you wish to go a bit further the train station is very close.

Prices were higher than we usually pay at £30 per night for bank holiday weekend, but good value we felt.

Defo be going back again next spring. And the best part of all is the morning, afternoon and evening visits from the ponies! Wandering around the site freely. No road traffic, only noise is that of the nature - bliss.

First trip in our campervan so no previous experience of what to expect from a site.

The staff were friendly on arrival and throughout our stay.

As per previous comments they are happy as long as you stick to the rules.

The toilets / showers were kept very clean by having 2 separate areas and closing 1 whilst the other was cleaned, although both were opened at 'peak periods'.

Our first night was the night before good Friday and I found the noise from the trains really intrusive,I then realised it was exceptionally busy as they were doing engineering work over the Easter period.

Nights 2 & 3 were much better although the nearby road gets pretty busy.

Tried both pubs nearby, the 'new forest' and the 'happy cheese', Food good in the forest but happier staff at the cheese.

We enjoyed our stay and would return here but I doubt we'll ever get weather as good in April again.

Our first visit to this site, the staff were helpful and friendly, the shower block and toilets were exceptionally clean, with plenty of hot water. Never had to wait, Would have liked another hair dryer or point tho, missed not being able to use my straighteners.

Surrounding area, the usual New Forest beauty and peace. The site was not very busy until weekend, but still quiet. We will go again next year. Best fish and chip shop is in Lyndhurst, and did not use the local hostelries this time. Used our bus passes for a day out in Southampton. Very convenient that the bus stop is near the campsite.

We visited in mid August with another family who were in a tent. Although the site was full (and it was quite noisy on the Saturday night - but not too late) there was plenty of space for us, however there are quite a lots of stony areas which were tricky for the tent.

Generally the trains were not a problem, however on the Thursday night there were two big freight trains through in the middle of the night which seemed to take forever to go through!

We had bikes and there is a cycle trail which goes through the site so we went on a lovely bike ride. We also cycled to the pub at the entrance but it's only a 5 minute walk. It's a big chain type pub but has a great big garden and good beer and a good selection of wines. We didn't eat there but the food looked pretty good.

For days out we visited Beaulieu and Bucklers Hard, both excellent. We struggled to find a petrol station in the areas and ended up nearly back in Southampton so suggest you fill up on the way.

I disagree with the earlier reviewer who wanted a children's playground, surely the whole point of the New Forest is that the forest is your playground?! Ours had a great time riding their bikes around and just generally playing.

You definitely need to look out for ponies who will walk right into tents so keep your rubbish well away!

Overall we enjoyed this site and would go again.

Nice camp site, although a bit close to the railway. At night the light pollution form nearby towns is quite evident.

The ponies will bother you for food, not surprising as many people insist on feeding them! Also squirrels will pinch your food so pack it away.

Staff are a bit OTT, the site is locked from 22:30 'til 07:00 and the staff come round to ensure you go to bed at a reasonable time.

The pricing is not just. A small 2 man tent cost the same as the massive tunnel tents and campers etc.

£62 for 2 nights for 2 adults and 2 kids with a 2 man tent and a pup tent, bit much I'd say.

So overall, nice site, run by very strict staff and too expensive.

We spent 3 nights at Ashurst (Monday - Thursday)and really enjoyed it.

Showers, toilets and wash area were all very clean, with plenty of hot water! No charge for shower but 20p for the hair dryer in the ladies, and I did take my own but never found a power point.

No fires allowed on this site due to the animals that wandered freely, you can have bbq's as long as you raise them off the ground and there is a bin for bbq's and other recycling bins.

Horses and cattle do graze on this site, and they do wander over to you if food is about, the site recommend that you do not feed them or leave food in your tent, other than that they cause no problem at all and are lovely to watch but they do wander out onto roads and do have right of way.

The village of Ashurst is within walking distance of the site, the closest pub is a 2 minute walk (i think is was called The New Forest)this pub was really nice and staff friendly. Further along the road is another pub called the Happy Cheese, this was also a nice pub and did do bike hire, we hired bikes from here which we had all day there is also bike hire available from the campsite but you have to book this in advance. Both the pubs served food but we didn't eat in either, so cannot comment.

Just along from the Happy Cheese is an indian restaurant called Asha, we ate here one evening and it was very nice. There is also a bistro which looked very nice and I have heard good reviews but we didn't get chance to sample the food there.

Lyndhurst village is approx. 2 miles away from the campsite and there are plenty of shops and cafes etc, you can also bike there from the campsite.

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend it to couples or families, it was very quiet during the night even though the site was full and we never had to queue for showers or toilets. Other reviews mention the noise from the road and trains, you can pick where you camp and we were not far from reception, road or the train track but we did not find the trains or road a problem at all.

A lovely campsite on the edge of the New Forest.

Various areas in amongst the forest to choose to pitch on.

The roaming horses were not an issue for us probably because we did as advised by the camp staff; keep food in your car. Although we left an opened pack of cheese straws on top of a box in the living area of our tent and was awoken during the 1st night because a squirrel was trying to steal them. When I un-zipped our sleeping compartment I'm not sure who was more startled, the squirrel of me and my husband.

There is ample room on this site allowing you to park next to your pitch.

Staff were very friendly. Good functional shower and toilet block and washing up facilities too. All very clean and tidy. General and Re-cycling bins two a penny round the site.

Hairdryer in ladies loo 20p a go and lasted for a while. No extra electrical sockets though.

We will certainly consider coming back here again!

The site is only just in the New Forest but the only one we could book at this busy part of the season. The staff were helpful on arrival. We booked bikes from Trax and found local cycle tracks fairly easily.

A trip to Brockenhurst revealed the strange world of life in the country with locals walking around in drag or other fancy dress and lots of teenagers pretending to be animals and singing animal songs.

Back on the site we were visited by ponies - they are able to open zips to get in your tent.

Unfortunately we did get reprimanded by a warden for making too much noise past the curfew time of 10pm. We were simply chatting and laughing and were flabbergasted when he said he could hear us from his caravan which was quite a distance away.

The toilet block seemed to be suffering from over use - muddy, smelly and lots of cubicles had no paper. Great weekend because of the great company. Felt the site was not brilliantly managed but still has an air of over regulation and surveillance.

That in itself was a source of some amusement though. Had a great weekend but will seek a more relaxed site next time.

Apart from the staff being on a bit of a power trip, we really enjoyed our weekend in Ashurst.

There are quite a few toilets and showers and every time we used them, they were spotless.

We were able to select our own pitches and we had more than enough room to park our cars next to our tents. By the Saturday, there was a notice out front to say the camp site was full, but it didn't feel overcrowded at all. In fact, there was a lot of open space left.

People say the horses are after your food but we found the squirrels to be quite cheeky little thieves. So make sure put your food away.

We pitched our tents very close to the train tracks but we only heard the first 3/4 trains. We got used to it very quickly and it didn't bother us at all.

Overall we had a brilliant time and would definitely recommend Ashurst.
