As soon as I saw the Eweleaze Farm website I knew I wanted to go there! I don’t camp for the sake of camping. I tolerate camping for the views and the open space. I was not disappointed. My husband doesn't drive so it was up to me to get our little astra van up the track, which I had read about in earlier reviews. I’d had some experience of slippery slopes in Dorset and I was very nervous. It was a bit scary at times (especially when you first arrive and have no idea what is over the crest of the hill) but the view, as you go over the top, is breathtaking and worth every bit of discomfort that sleeping on a slope entails. I was expecting festival loos but when I went into one, when we arrived, I was very worried. It wasn't the eco nature of them; I just didn't think we two old and creaky people would be safe, perching on (what seemed to me) the rather flimsy planks of wood. I had also read, on here, that there were flush toilets and there they were, right in the middle of a field. The look on my husband’s face when he emerged from sturdy shed with the immaculate porcelain pedestals was a picture :) We only paid for 3 nights to begin with (you don’t have to pay any more in advance than you want to) as the weather had been bad and I wasn't sure how we would cope. Luckily the sun came out, the wind dropped (mostly) and we ended up extending our planned 7 nights to 11. We were due to return the following week but were deterred by the severe windy weather warnings and we and our tent needed to recuperate. For young fit people with children this is the most perfect site I can imagine. There are no rules and because campfires are a feature there is a party atmosphere, especially at the weekend, so you can get noisy neighbours but one of the fields is designated ‘quiet’ and generally people were in bed before too late. For older creaky people like us it is quite hard work (I only made it down to the beach once) but there are flatter pitches than the one we chose and all of the views are good (although quite why some people pitch facing the latrines I haven’t worked out). The atmosphere is laid back but that doesn't mean it isn't well organised. Every care was taken to make the facilities as clean and pleasant as possible. There were surprisingly few queues but seats had thoughtfully been provided, next to the shower and toilet sheds, so waiting around in a field surrounded by the Dorset hills was no hardship. We had to go out for extra supplies and I mostly did my shopping at the Littlemoor Somerfield because the parking was easier. I can highly recommend the little hardware shop, next to it, that had just closed but opened up to sell me an airbed when ours got a slow puncture. It is a shame that Peter didn't get a licence to sell scrumpy and doesn't have the newspapers delivered because, if he did, it would only be emergency shopping that would make me leave the site at all. We are definitely going back for as many years as we can.

This not for the faint hearted. Excellent location, beautiful views, great shop, like the earth toilets, but when the wind comes in.13.8.7 about ten to twenty tents were just trashed during a very windy night. It was quite spectacular. The camp site emptied and we then had a superb quiet week. The owner said the wind was not unusual. Credit to the staff. They piled all the trashed tents onto a trailer and cleared up the mess others had abandoned. I think the moral of the story is baton down the tent each night, you never know what is coming during the night particularly on a very exposed site.

Just returned from this fabulous camp site. The weekend was the best we have had weather wise, so we were very lucky. As previously stated, there is plenty of room - we were in a field without a sea view, which I think was quieter than the sea view. Some areas of the fields were on slopes, but people didn't seem to mind! The eco loos are fine - not as smelly as you would think. There a few shower blocks dotted round, we didn't have to queue at all (although we were up at 7 each morning - excited kids) It was great that you could walk down to the beach, which wasn't crowded. The only niggle we had was that there was a wedding party on the Saturday night which was a bit loud, but stopped at 12 and some sort of hippy fest all weekend that we could just hear til 11. I think if you were in the same field as them it would have been too loud and very annoying. We spoke to the owner and he said he didn't think he would do events again!

First time to this "green" campsite, with Solar showers that were luke warm, even at 8am which was fine if the weather was hot. The hot showers had a broken boiler. Toilets were OK, they were converted portable sheds but were clean although there could have been more of them. The shop had problems with the freezers and all of the organic meat was frozen, the bread was delivered daily but rather expensive, £3 for a loaf. The shop was open from 8 to 8 and had meat, BBQ's, logs, a free freezer block service, ice creams, milk, butter. Mostly essentials. The fields were not over crowded and had mainly families although there was a large group of college students who did make a fair amount of noise-it was reported but nothing seemed to be done. The site also had a pizza van that did organic pizzas from noon to 8pm at £3 each. You could walk along the coast path to the Smugglers inn, about a mile away or drive, which did good food had a kids play area and lots of outside seating. Weymouth was a problem to get to with the traffic and the beaches were packed so it was best to stay on the private beach which did have steps to it if you looked hard enough rather than the steep slope most campers used. The best thing was being able to have real camp fires and this was great at night seeing all the fires lit up across the hillsides. You could find wood on site but I would advise taking an axe or saw to chop it up. There was a barn for the kids to play in with straw bales and hay piles in each field for the kids. Ours loved it and made great friends with all of the children, a definate place to go with kids and dogs as long as you want to do some real camping

Well for me this place was just what we needed - back to (very nearly) basics camping, no caravans, no evening "entertainment" (well apart from people trying to gather wood!), no real restrictions - apart from those you place on yourselves. Yes some nights were a little noisy but not overly so. The solar showers and toilets although busy (well it was a weekend) were kept very clean. There were lots of larger parties there but most seemed friendly enough. The shop on site catered for most of the basics with the Spar & CO OP just a couple of minutes down the road. All in all a perfect weekend which we hope to repeat in the not to distant future.

This is the 4th time we have stayed here and whilst it is an amazing site I think that Peter the owner is booking in too many people and considering the facilities are not great £7.50 an adult per night is quite a lot ( this has also increased a great deal since out first visit). When we first stayed here there were about 10 unisex toilets and two showers in wooden huts ans although in recent yeas the owner has added a block of solar showers there have been no extra toilets added and on a bank holiday weekend there can be as many as 12 people queuing for each toilet (this is not helpful if you have got children) The site itself is beautiful, with amazing views over the sea and down into Weymouth, there are some good walks along the coastal path. I would recommend giving it a go but definitely avoid the bank holiday weekend.

Only my second time camping and a first at Eweleaze - we had a fantastic time - obviously helped by fabulous weather and the group of friends we were with. Beautiful spot and very quiet and we weren't in the quiet field - but there is one. Flushable toilets were fine and were kept very clean, the outdoor toilets (holes in the ground) were fine also, though most of the children didn't like them. Showers were clean, outdoor solar showers don't seem to get warm but that's part of the fun! There are queues but its not for long. Shop was good, no rubbish for the children to buy! The Pizzas were fab too! Spar and Co-op are just a short drive away. Camp fires really add to the atmosphere in the evening and if you can't be bothered to forage for wood then you can buy bags of wood at the farm shop. The journey to the beach is down a deep slope but its worth it when you get there. Would recommend Smugglers Inn at Osmington (signposted) lovely setting and good food but does get very busy. Looking forward to our next visit.

Just returned from my first trip to this site and thought it was a great location. Yes its a bit more of a "roughing it" site than others but I think that's part of the appeal. Its certainly nice to find a site with no bar/evening entertainment. There are a lot more than the 120 pitches that this site says there is. There must have been at least 4 times that number when I was there. A guy I spoke to said that he'd been at Eweleaze in 2006 and it was much busier then. So not sure if it was quieter when I was there as it was the opening week or if numbers are more limited this year. I camped in one of the fields away from the sea, so no sea view but it was more sheltered. There are solar showers and a few normal showers although even the boiler fired showers were cold 99% of the time. Some fields have flushing loos, others have drop toilets. There are fairly long queues for the showers most of the day and evening. Queues for the loos in the morning as well. There was certainly space in the fields for more tents, however as most campers seem to like pitching around the edge of fields everyone had close neighbours. There's no set pitches, go where you want. Also there are no rules on noise and there were a lot of large groups who were singing and playing guitars till gone midnight every night. It rained briefly on 2 days that I was there and both times the track into some of the field became impassable. The first day a car was stuck in mud up to its axles and had to be pulled out. Then later in the week our field was cut off my mud, no way in or out. It seems to dry out again fairly quickly but I imagine it would be interesting if you were there on a more wet week. The site has a shop that sells meat, milk, eggs, bread, etc. But they seem to have a bit of a supply problem and often didn't have stuff. There is a well stocked Spar 2mins drive away. The site "freeze" ice blocks for you free of charge, but in a week my ice blocks never froze. The guy said the freezer didn't work well! They also sell freshly cooked pizzas on site. The beach is at the edge of the campsite, pebbly beach but nice. Kids had a great time running about, playing on the hay bales and making new friends.

I agree with all the positive things previous posters have said. It's a beautiful spacious site and the sea view, the beach, the lamb burgers and the nudie open-air showers are all fab. My wife and daughters weren't so keen on the eco-loos (a.k.a. Holes in the ground), especially when the contents threatened to overflow. The laid-back management style can have its disadvantages, too. Three of the six nights we spent at Eweleaze were spoiled by a large group of morons who got drunk every night and chanted (think football terraces rather than buddhist monks), screamed and swore into the early hours. On the night of Fri 3rd / Sat 4th August they were still at it at 3.30 a.m. Anyone who complained to them (and plenty did) was abused and sworn at. The owners were told and said it would be "sorted out" but nothing seemed to happen. Fortunately the yobs moved on of their own accord, so we were able to enjoy our last night there in peace. Surely it wouldn't be too much trouble for the owners to point out to everyone on arrival, as most campsites do, that it's important to respect other people and that noise should be kept to a minimum after 11p.m. And the owners should enforce that by asking people who spoil things for everyone else to leave.

We visited this site 3 years on the trot, and each year it gets better. The first year we visited, it was kaos! but isn't that what camping is about! This year has been the best, the slip road wasn't as fearful as in the past, toilets were kept clean at all times. Peter, the owner is lovely, its amazin, what the owners puppy, called Flo, and a giant haystack can do for kids of all ages.
We went with a big group, which included vfoxyness, previous reviewer, lots of kids and 2 dogs, camp fires galore and a really friendly atomosphere. I have just had the booking confirmed for 07, and will be doing it for 5 days this time, as opposed to a weekend. If basic is what you like, and providing your own amusement, this is the place for you.
