One of our favourite campsites, we go back every year. This year improvements are :

I) solar panels now at washing up sinks mean that there is now hot water.

Ii) extended bakery means that there is loads more bread! We made the mistake this year of bringing our own bread from home. Don't stock up, buy it fresh on site. Floury baps particularly yum!

Iii) new hay barn means there is even more room for kids to play. Also an outside 'hay play' area.

A group of us stayed for a few nights having stayed some years ago. Bad bit first. We were surprised to see that the one track in and out of the site had not changed and was still a pain to negotiate. If there was ever an emergency, it could be hopeless. Sometimes it was chaos getting in and out.

Good bits. The facilities have really changed - a bakery selling almost everything you could wish for including coffee, fresh pizza place, fully stocked shop.

There are now flushable toilets as well as composting ones and many, many more showers.

There are some great things to do for the children including simple ideas such as hay stacks in the field and a hay barn, as well as one to one contact with the copious and varied farm animals from hogs to dogs.

If you are going to stay here, pitch high, the views across the water are breathtaking. Camp fires are a great idea too.

A further visit to this site left us somewhat disappointed over previous visits. However this is a bit of a mixed review as some things remain excellent.

Pros: Location:- brilliantly positioned with many of the possible pitches having fabulous views over Weymouth bay.

Facilities:- improved this year with solar powered washing up facilities, showers good, albeit ones in East Filed seemed a bit temperamental, shop and bakery much improved - bakery is outstanding with delicious everything. Composting loos no problem (although some fool seem to have wee'd in shavings!).

Beach:- good safe swimming beach - but slopes steeply so not great for paddling toddlers / semi-swimmers. Fish to be caught easily from beach. As pebbles appropriate footwear needed.

Hay Barn/animals:- good play area but being away from the 'square' it now meant little children needed to have exclusive overview from parent(s) rather than be glancing over whilst ordering pizza/having a drink etc. Also got really crowded with high numbers and a least one bloody nose witnessed. Animals make for constant entertainment (some might worry about hygiene issues of goats on tables - we don't!).

Cons: Capacity:- Don't believe the stated restriction on 120 pitches - there were probably about that number in the one field we were in and some of the others seemed as full.

Noise:- We were there with out two small children and came back from the beach one day to find a large group of 5 big and about as many small tents had all but enveloped us. If you are looking for peaceful seclusion this is not a site for you! (I would not have written this after previous visits).

Dogs:- I am a fan of dogs but as the saying goes owners are more often the problem. The previously mentioned group brought 3 dogs with them and did not dare where they wandered or where they defecated - the filed became a minefield (so to speak)! There were also other dogs that wandered about without control and on one occasion we had to chase one off that had its nose in the washing up bowl (we were putting the kids to bed).

Ambience:- We found it had changed, I do agree that we had previously been in the last week of its opening, but it seemed to be dominated by large groups that constructed their lagers and then consumed much lager (- eg. Waiting for the showers we saw one guy go into the showers with a bottle)creating quite a lot of noise without seeming aware of the impact on others. No problem with people having fun but maybe they should segregate groups from individual families. Generally people also seemed to have less of the communal spirit - seemed just like a big town.

Value for Money:- It is quite pricey considering the numbers of people that actually descend on the place - i. E. Its quite a price to pay for high density camping irrespective of the very good things (besides you pay directly for the best things like the bakery and shop anyway!).

Summary: We were sad that things had changed here and will not be going back - the site has much to commend it but it has possibly become a victim of its own success; its good that it has a pretty liberal approach but on the back of its success and the very high numbers what rules it does have do need to be applied - noise and dogs seem key ones but I would suggest the site needs to consider segregating the big groups (we saw one that seemed to have at least 8 big tents and 3 gazebos) from tents booked as individuals or pairs (but agreed tricky to decide how). Oh well nothing stays the same but I will miss fresh croissants in the morning!

Individual scores given below are high - lower overall score is reflection of how it all fits together once all matters are taken together (eg ambience, dogs etc).

We were attracted by the positive reviews, ignoring the negative in the hope that we would not experience the same problems that others have. Unfortunately we were not successful.

All the good stuff is true, superb location, with friendly staff and good amenities - the toilets are fine, showers good, bakery and shop excellent - but unless you are pitched on a serious angle and out at the very edges of the site then you are likely to be swamped by someone else's party.

This is definitely a party campsite, very noisy at night. I guess this is not too bad if you are part of the party, but having just experienced being totally descended on (to the point of being penned in to such an extent that we could not actually get our car out) it was not much fun and we decamped early.

Obviously this is not the site's fault, just some very inconsiderate camp etiquette and after I complained they did move a tent to allow us to get the car out (but then put the tent back ! We were past the point of caring at this stage and were already planning to leave the next day. ) The same pattern looked to be repeated all over with huge groups dominating large chunks of the site. Think that the site should be split into group and non-group, there is lots of space.

A real shame as it spoilt what could of been a great break in a beautiful location. Special mention must be given to the experience of listening to someone playing guitar and murdering a Leonard Cohen song at the top of his voice whilst we were trying to get to sleep.

PS. Don't worry about the track - it is tight but the staff pitch in to regulate traffic at busy points to keep things moving - the drive in as you get the view opening up is great.

Myself and boyfriend stayed at Eweleaze campsite for the last 3 nights in August this year for the first time and can definitely recommend it.

We had a fabulous stay from start to finish and here's why:

Location - the location is fabulous, we stayed in beach field and had a fairly flat pitch with a great seaview and the short walk to the private beach was great

Facilities - the showers in East field were the best of any campsite I've ever visited, lovely and hot and no lack of water pressure, the compost loo's were well maintained although we did walk a little further some days to the flushing toilets near the car park which were also well maintained by the staff. The farm yard itself with all the little shops was brilliant, such a great atmosphere in that area and although we don't have children it was nice to see all of the families having so much fun.

Staff - all of the staff we encountered from our welcome to departure were polite and helpful and seemed to be enjoying their different jobs.

Campfires - being able to have a camp fire each night made our holiday, to sit on the hillside overlooking Weymouth bay and seeing all of the different fires glowing around the site was really good, especially on Monday night when we had a great view of the Weymouth seafront fireworks. A special thanks to the receptionist who phoned the coastguard for us to make them aware we were having a small fire on the beach one night.

Atmosphere - The way the site is ran and the family orientated atmosphere meant that there was a very relaxed and laid back feeling to the site which made it feel very safe and secure which in turn made us relaxed and enjoy the holiday even more.

What made my holiday even more memorable was that my boyfriend proposed on the beach on Tuesday night after a picnic next to our campfire and with the chinese lanterns blowing past overhead it was the perfect setting!

We will definitely go back

Beautiful location with stunning coastal views from most of the camping fields. This campsite is very large, with many fields to choose from and you can pitch anywhere - there are no designated pitches, so arrive early to have the best pick!

The facilities are quite basic, and can be busy given that the campsite can hold so many people. Toilets are mostly holes in the ground with a loo seat over, washing-up sinks are cold water only, and the showers are solar powered and drain onto the ground through slats in the floor, so it can get a bit wet under foot if you are in the queue for the shower!

There are also free roaming animals, and plenty of animals for children to handle, including in the dog pen, free ranging pigs, guinnea pigs, chicks.

The private beach was lovely, although still very busy on nice days, given how many people there were in the campsite. It is a shingle beach and access is via steep steps, so no good for pushchairs.

The track down to the campsite is single lane, steep in parts, and can get very muddy on wet days, all of which make it hard work getting vehicles in and out of the site, which was a real drawback for us on a busy August weekend (and the campsite is only open for the month of August).

Also, there was a lack of 'rules' around the campsite, which we hoped would make for a very relaxed camping trip, but actually ended up spoiling it somewhat. It was lovely to be able to have a campfire, which is banned in most campsites, but aside from that the relaxation of the rules caused us problems. The admittance of several large single-sex groups led to very noisy nights next to rowdy campers who kept our children awake, and the constant flow of chinese lanterns (sold in the camp shop) over our tent was a real cause for concern, particularly as one narrowly missed our tent and there was so many hay bales around - including the one set up for children to play on.

We paid £80 for two nights for two adults, one child and one baby, which I did feel was overpriced.

The location was great, the facilities so-so, and the area in which we stayed lovely (I really recommend the tank museum and the smugglers inn), but I don't think we will return to this particular campsite.

Have to agree with everyone – this is a fantastic place. Lots and lots of space for the children to run round in. Fantastic views and of course wonderful to sit round an open fire toasting marshmallows. Also a great base for visiting Dorset and all it has to offer. We stayed for ten nights and whilst the compost toilets were a no no for my sensitive nose – there were also flush toilets which were clean enough.

A massive concern I must raise however is the fact that the camp sell lanterns and whilst they look very pretty floating up and out to sea, they are in my opinion, not safe around so many flammable tents!

On our first evening there my young son and I were going back to our tent and witnessed a group of really drunk twenty somethings actually running along with lanterns to get them in the air. We waited for an appropriate time to pass and were fully visible with our torches etc but one of the group decided that he would run along and let go of another one which missed the top of my head by no more than a couple of inches. When I asked them to be careful - I was told where to go, called a few disgusting names and laughed at! My son found the whole incident extremely upsetting and cried but was also just laughed at by a very intimidating six foot bully! The next lantern they let off was blown along the ground and was heading towards a group of tents but fortunately was stopped by someone in another group. Thankfully they seemed to run out of lanterns shortly thereafter.

Fortunately, they packed up and went the next morning otherwise we would not have stayed. I told my husband towards the end of the stay what had happened and we reported it to the owner who was very apologetic and said that they were reviewing their lantern policy. I really hope they do because the consequence of one of these lanterns in the hands of a similar group and landing on a tent with a family inside is a terrible accident waiting to happen.

A lovely site. A bit like Camp Bestival without Mr Tumble and the bands!

Luckily we arrived in a 4x4 as the track to enter the site was very steep and rugged. Would have been difficult in the rain. Was also a bit tricky when meeting oncoming vehicles. An improvement would have been to have 2 separate access & exit routes.

This website states that the site has 120 pitches, so I was very surprised to arrive and find such a huge site. With far more than 120 tents. However there was ample space and room in every one of the fields.

We pitched in the top field and had wonderful views of the sea and of Weymouth & Portland.

The site was very middle class. As someone else said 'Boden by the Sea'! Lots of kids & dogs and some very large & noisy groups, but everyone was very friendly and the atmosphere chilled out.

The food available (Fire cooked pizzas etc) looked great, but we cooked our own & loved the fact we could have a campfire. Not sure how hygenic it was to have the animals milling around the food stalls. We caught 2 goats sneaking in to the pizza unit and helping themselves to grated cheese!

We stayed for just one night. We had wanted to stay the night before too but the site was fully booked. This is a good sign as it means they don't cram too many units in so there are enough loos etc.

Compost loos were in every field, clean, well stocked with loo roll and not at all smelly. Some hand sanitizer or place to wash hands would be a welcome addition. We didn't check out the solar showers.

Washing up areas just had cold water. Not a huge issue. However they had no cover so would have been a nuisance in wet weather.

The private beach was a bonus, as was the hourly minibus to Weymouth which ran throughout the day for £3 return.

Lovely chilled site, pricey for the facilities on offer. However we will return but for longer!

Set in beautiful surroundings, this site is very much a 'back to basics' kind of place. If you're used to Camping and Caravanning Club sites with spotless brick toilet and shower blocks, this might not be the place for you!

Accessed via a very steep single track road up and over a hill, which in wet conditions is bordering on the dangerous unless you have a 4x4, the campsite is huge, and has rather a chaotic, festival feel about it. Most toilets are slightly smelly compost toilets (aka sheds with a toilet seat over a hole in the floor), but some rather smelly and dirty flushing toilets are also available. However, there are NO handwashing facilities at the toilets, and NO RUNNING HOT WATER on the site. The website doesn't make this clear, and with two small children, foreknowledge of this would have made me avoid this campsite. Showers were mostly warm (except when they were cold!), but massive queues and rather dirty inside. Washing up points are uncovered sinks with cold taps in the middle of fields.

Upon checking in, simply drive around and find your pitch - however, be careful where you choose. The flattest fields aren't always the quietest and quickly turn into a very slippy quagmire after a bit of rain. Cars were constantly getting stuck all over the site, and as many children are running free all around the site, driving in slippery conditions is pretty dangerous all round.

Iceblock exchange is available at a reasonable rate - either buy iceblocks there and swap them for fresh ones when you need them, or swap your own - be aware though that you won't get your original ice blocks back. Food available on site is fine, but expensive as all organic and not that much choice. It was nice to be able to enjoy a camp fire in the evenings though! We left a day early due to the terrible weather and worries about being able to get into and out of the site, but won't be returning again as this site just wasn't for us.

What a fantastic site which is run by really good people - very relaxed attitude. Like the ethos of the Eden Project camping.

I would thoroughly recommend it and repeat what someone else has said - it has a 'festival' feel to the whole place. Kids would really enjoy it.

You do need to take care with the access and egress to the site and you will not want to go out to much because of this so stock up well on essentials.

The bus from the site is good value as if you take your own car into Weymouth parking near the beach can be hard to find and it is expensive. And importantly you can only stay parked for max of 3 hrs - so for a day trip to the sandy beach and facilities of Weymouth the bus is a better option.

Site is also dog friendly.
