Stayed one night in a Wigwam - very reasonable at £48 for 2 adults and 2 15 yr olds. Toilet blocks were very clean. Dishwashing facilities were great. The café is a great addition, the food is fantastic, the only criticism is the type of flooring, beware you could have a nasty fall on the very slippery surface - we all wore walking boots and our legs were actually slipping apart while standing waiting to be served!

A lovely, 'camp where you like' type of site. We have been coming to Sands for 20 years and really watched it grow. There's a shop, an on site bakery for fresh croissants in the morning, and even a cafe on site now. The facilities, washing up, toilets and showers, are clean and well maintained.
The beach just over the dunes is superb on a sunny day, with few people and shallow water which is incredibly safe for bathers with small waves and few currents (don't forget your wetsuit though, it's cold!)
It can be a bit midge-y in the morning/evening, but that's Scotland's highlands for you!
As other reviewers nave said it is best to camp close to the dunes as it can be a little exposed further up the hill.

Another lovely few days holiday at sands - congratulations to Maria and James for their efforts -the facilities are excellent, the new pitch areas up above the toilet block provide a real variety of pitch locations we had a lovely pitch up here and we also appreciated the toilet block improvements since our last visit - enjoyed a warm shower in a sparkly clean block and we also appreciated the spacious washing up sinks in the kitchen - we sampled the home baking at the barn - and it was very good ! The menu looked good - unfortunately we couldn't stay long enough to try out the haddock, it smelt great and was available as take away. We will be back soon and we hope to bring grandchildren with us so we can get into the sandcastle building competitions and try out the new equipment in the playground

Booked here well in advance and the weather was truly horrific. Horizontal rain so much so I was for giving up 30 mins after arriving. But we persevered and were rewarded with a pleasant experience. We had the site primarily to ourselves bar two more hardy souls.
Plus points: Location, wonderful beach, wilderness setting. The site café is a real asset and we returned here again and again (and not just to get away from the rain). Table tennis! (enough said)
Negatives: not much, the area’s choice of dining is limited if you’re veggie and have fussy kids hence site restaurant (I’m not going to call it a café because it’s much more than that). We will return again though hopefully when the rain is not battering the van.

This was our first visit to this site and we were not disappointed. I called on the day of travel to check we would be able to get an EHU pitch. I was told that there would be plenty of pitches but that she couldn't guarantee the electricity.
On arrival we checked in and were told that there should be a couple of EHU pitches somewhere but that we'd have to seek them out for ourselves, and to come back if we couldn't find one.
After a bit of searching, we found a pitch and set up camp. The site rules say a minimum of 7m between tents, however it was very busy and half way through our stay we found ourselves very close to a caravan due to the lack of EHU's.
Apart from that, the site was in a terrific location. The beach is beautiful with glorious views of the mountains. A bit of a trek over the high dunes to get there, but well worth it.
Gairloch is only a few minutes away in the car. The book shop is amazing, well worth a look. Also, the local mini market (Mace I think) sold lovely ice cream. Try the 'to die for' chocolate. We ate lunch at the Sheiling. Sat outside under the palm trees admiring the view - very nice. The Gairloch tourist office also had a local fair on the Monday which is worth a look.
The site shop was really well stocked and we ordered bread daily, for collection the following morning. I have to say that the chocolate croissants were irresistible when warm! The newly opened site cafe was also nice. We booked for dinner and had lovely fresh haddock and chips. You can bring your own bottle of wine too.
The toilet block nearest our area was one of the older ones but very clean. Showers were free. Good dishwashing facilities, plenty double sinks. We walked along to the newer toilet block beside the play park and were able to re-freeze our ice blocks (also free).
A word of warning. We packed up the tent quite early (because the forecast was for rain late morning, and we didn't want to take down a wet tent) however there was no wind at 8am, which meant the midges were awful! Despite being covered in Smidge we were all bitten and they swarmed around us relentlessly. My advice, take one of those nets which go right over your head.

Wonderful stay on this lovely site.
As we didn't require electric hook up, we were told to take our pick of pitch with the only restriction being to ensure 7m between units (we greatly appreciated this rule as it ensured some privacy during our stay). We chose to pitch some distance from the amenities block which was a small sacrifice for the AMAZING view over the beach, Gairloch and to the Isles of Rona, Skye and Lewis and Harris beyond. We were lucky enough to enjoy four days of sunshine so the proximity to the beach was fantastic. The clear, shallow water with tiny fish swimming amongst our feet and those views. Heaven!
The shower and toilet block were modern, clean, warm and large. The addition of baths was very helpful for our shower hating child. The dish washing area was also huge and included freezers for freezing ice blocks and points for charging phones which were much appreciated. There was also a sofa, picnic benches and cooking facilities (£2 for 20mins of electricity for microwave and hob) which we didn't use but would have appreciated in more inclement weather.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the shop very well stocked.
The kids had a great time on the play park and teamed up with other children on the site to play team games.
The cafe is lovely and we enjoyed bacon rolls and home made cakes on our last morning. Yum.
Unfortunately midges at this time of year on the west coast are an issue and despite SSS and jungle formula they were still biting. If, like me, you react badly to insect bites, it makes a stay quite uncomfortable. We were very very glad of the insect screens on the tent! If you are planing a summer visit, make sure you are prepared. The site shop does sell a range of repellents, midge coils, hoods etc which were appreciated. The local pharmacy were also helpful for antihistamines!
Overall a fantastic site in a breathtaking location with wonderful facilities. We will be back. Out of midge season!

Well, we cracked it this year with the weather. I defy anyone to tell me that there is a better site in Britain to stay on when the sun is shining day after day. The owners always have a smile and a laugh for you. They could not be more helpful. You can pitch pretty much where you like and we had a perfect pitch in the shelter of the dunes. The beach is magnificent and the water is as clear as a bell. Truly idyllic. The 'Barn' restaurant is fab and my son and husband are still raving about the slice sausage. We had a wonderful time and are planning going up for three weeks next year. Thanks to Sands for a wonderful holiday.

Stunning drive to this site set behind the dunes just outside Gairloch. We visited the Melvaig Inn, a dog friendly and interesting pub for lunch. Travelled south from Gairloch also to Red Point beaches. Paused at the dog friendly Badachro Inn with good beer and food.
On arrival at the site we had a warm welcome from the reception situated next to the shop which looked very well stocked (including small items for rainy days).
We were directed to a nice hardstanding for our 27' motorhome.
The facilities were excellent, clean and tidy.
Overall a great site, and would use it again.

Stunning drive to this site set behind the dunes just outside Gairloch. Warm welcome from the reception situated next to the shop which looked very well stocked (including small items for rainy days).
Although you are next to the dunes, it's not quite as wild as some publications may lead you to believe. There are static caravans, hook ups & quite a lot of caravans, but there are little nooks & crannies to tuck into.
But, walk over the dune, and you are on a spectacular beach with stunning views - lots of fun for children, dogs & beachcombing adults.
There is a fantastic play area for children with a space to play ball games.
The facilities were very good - 3 separate blocks with plenty of toilets & showers, and even a half bath - very useful as not all children are comfortable with showers. Very clean & tidy, as was the whole site. There is also a café which is open during the day, and in the evening does meals & you can take your own bottle.
Overall a great site, we were pleasantly surprised!
There are local shops nearby - very good newsagent and very good butcher. More shops further on including an activities shop selling guides, maps, books, equipment & coffee!
