I was disappointed after reading good reviews about this site. I had pre-booked and that's probably the only reason we stayed. It's a long beautiful drive but by the time we got there we were tired and hungry and just wanted to pitch the tent and get something to eat. Reception had found our reservation but told us there were no electrical hook-ups left, not being well pleased I explained we had specifically chosen that site and booked knowing there was electricity as we had a young baby with us and needed the kettle to make up feeds and heat bottles and baby food. They pointed to a few places on the map and said we could maybe try there or here or there and see if we could find any. We drove round and round a packed site looking for a pitch and eventually found one along with the motorhomes, this worked better in the end for us as it was quieter for the baby. Walking through the sand dunes with a ton of baby items was fun and we soon ditched the buggy. The beach is fantastic and I imagine this site would be great in quieter times but our experience has put us off and we'll not be back

We spent a couple of nights here and will certainly be back as it was great site with brilliant views over the sea.

The site was clean and tidy and being able to choose your own pitch was also a great thing as well. Quite windy where we pitched but that was my stubbornness to get a even better view in the mornings.

The toilets / showers were also very clean and tidy.

No complaints about this site.

Two adults and a small dog.

Wonderful location! There were, maybe, a couple of tents that came and went over the week that we stayed, probably because of the high winds and hail predicted for that week! Nevertheless we were fortunate to have beautiful panoramic views across the water. The beach was clean as was the campsite and the facilities which were attended to on a daily basis.

Although the toilet/shower block was closed due to expansion the small portable toilet and shower block was ample, (as there were few campers on the site) and it had a much needed heater!

The shop on site was well stocked and staff were friendly.

There was also a large indoor cooking/washing/lounge area, again much appreciated in cold adverse weather conditions and handy for young families.

We enjoyed the walks and local hidden treasures. I would recommend this site to others. Very happy.

Wonderful location. My kids and dog loved playing on the sand dunes and beach. It was very quiet when we were there (October half term) so we had lots of space/privacy.

And we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights when we were there!

Only complaint is that the shower block was pretty chilly (no evidence of heating). The shower itself was not that powerful and the water was not that hot. So emerging into the cold air was quite brutal!

We are a tent with two adults and two dogs - no EHU.

Facilities - The shower/toilet block was large and, despite the first weekend of our stay being busy, there was always a free cubicle! The block is cleaned very thoroughly once a day. The washing up sinks are inside, with the cooking and eating area. This was more spacious than any site we have ever visited. The on site shop is extremely well equipped and pricing was reasonable. Many items were the same price as the local town and the midge spray was only marginally more than you could buy on the internet. There were lots of bins to use and numerous water points. The bins were emptied daily.

Site - this is a large site and yet, due to the rules, we felt as if we were on a small compact site for our entire stay. We camped in the dunes so the dogs only had to run over in the morning and we had a lot of privacy. There seemed to be a great play area for the kids and the beach was amazing. We did relax on several days on it -our Retriever loved the water and the old dog loved the warm sand to lie on.

Location - What can you say. You drive through the highlands to get here and are greeted by a sandy beach!

Dogs - The site was very dog friendly with hooks to tie the leads to outside all of the buildings. Obviously dogs on lead on the site but they could be off lead on the beach. We didn't use the dog walk next to the site but went on the pinewood trail at Inverewe Gardens - worth it as they can run off lead in the enclosed section.

Midgees - no review of the site could be complete without a report! It is the highlands and August is the season - simdge the midge and avon skin so soft(SSS) were excellent additions to our camping equipment and we read that mixing 1 part SSS to 5 parts water gave a barrier for the dogs. This seemed to work and their fur is just lovely now! Seriously if it is not windy you need a midge net as well as the anti-bite stuff because it is bad in the evening and at certain points in the morning.

We are planning to visit this site again as we were so impressed with it. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the location is stunning and the facilities amongst the best we have encountered.

Just spent 4 nights at the Sands, really beautiful location, friendly staff, very well equipped shop really all you need.

Facilities are a little dated however they are kept very very clean and there is plenty of them (3 blocks)

The sands has a relaxed approach find a area, make sure you leave 7 metres between outfits and pitch up, there is plenty of space and lots of lovely little private areas

Well worth the trip and the beach is stunning.

Word of warning midges there are many so be prepared!

Fantastic site for children, safe and secure, cracking beach. I like the informality afforded by the site with plenty room between units if desired. Very well stocked shop and friendly staff.

Can be windy but plenty shelter behind the dunes. Uor second visit this year and being so convenient for us we will be back. Surprisingly no midges this year so far.

Toilet facilities in the main clean and tidy. One I think the oldest of the three seems suffer from a bit of an odour problem but there appears to be a new facility being built which will probably address this. Highly recommended.

An absolutley fabulous site. We return again and again to this site as we love the location and laid back atmosphere. The site is next to the beach and sheltered by large sand dunes. The beach itself is a long stretch of white/golden sand.

The site is large and we have always been able to find a secluded spot even when it is very full in July. Tents can choose many private areas sheltered by the dunes or groups of tents can use the larger flat areas by the stream. Caravans can choose a flat area by the dunes or higher pitch with superb views.

The facilities although old are clean and numerous. There are 3 shower and toilet blocks therefore I have never had to wait for a shower. The camping area has an indoor potwash and eating area. There is a family bathroom in the middle shower block. There are no set pitches but everyone manages to get their own space.

There is a large park for children in the centre of the site which can be noisy late into the night so do not camp there if you want a quiet evening.

The shop is well stocked with everything. But it is expensive - most shops in Gairloch are expensive. We shop in Inverness on our way up to save a bit. The staff are friendly but leave everyone to get their privacy if they wish.

Our only suggestion for improvement is that the pot wash in the caravan area is now old and outside and not pleasant to stand in when it is windy - I would prefer an inside pot wash. The sie can be windy so windbreaks are a good idea.

The surrounding area of Gairloch is lovely with lots of nice places to eat (Baddachro Inn) and good shops and things to do.

We are just home from a fantastic stay at this site. The weather was brilliant while we were there and we spent a lot of time at the beach.

The facilities are well maintained though as the site is big it can mean that the pitches are quite far from the toilets, etc.

The toilet block we used was clean and had plenty of showers and toilets though they were quite basic.

The on site shop was great, well stocked and reasonably priced- the locals use it too, which is always a good sign.

They hire bikes and kayaks on site which we took advantage of.

Our children loved the park and games room with the air hockey being a favourite.

We went to the Melvaig Inn for food one evening, book if you plan to go as they were turning people away who hadn't. The food and service were great.

We also had lunch after a walk to the Fairy Lochs at the Badachro Inn- great views across the bay and good food. Both places were very dog friendly.

After worrying about midgies, they weren't too bad. We got a couple of bites but nothing as bad as I expected from previous summers reviews.

We stayed at Sands for 12 days in June 2012. We loved it and would recommend it to anyone.

We paid £20 per night for 2 adults and 4 children (one under 5yrs) in a tent. If we had arrived a week later, there would only have been a £2 a night increase for high season.

The toilet and shower block was kept clean and tidy, we saw the play equipment in the playground being maintained and rubbish bins were emptied every day. The campsite shop stocks almost everything you could possibly need- food, drink, camping equipment, wetsuits, ice creams!

In addition to the coin operated hob in the dishwashing room, there is now also a microwave, although we did not use this. Washing machines are £3 a time and are in the laundry block nearer the caravan area.

We were blessed with lovely weather for all but one of the days we were there, and made full use of the beautiful sandy beach which was just over the dunes from our tent.

In Gairloch itself, for non-cooking nights, there is both a chip shop and a Chinese takeaway!

On the campsite itself, we could hear cuckoos in the evening and there was only one evening (a Saturday) when there were some noisy people having a 'party', but they quietened down by 11.

All in all, we were very impressed with Sands and the surrounding area is obviously beautiful.
