We have just returned from a four night break at this gem of a site. We have stayed here before and have already booked for later in the year.

Getting to the site is via a narrow but well tarmac road but there are plenty of passing points. The farm-house (reception) is on the right hand side whilst the campsite itself is just a bit further on (on the left).

Tthe campsite owners are a lovely couple plus they are also campers themselves. The shower/toilet block is on the left hand side as you enter the site, split via male/female and disabled, always very clean and roomy.

There are five showers in total (two male, two female and one disabled) but we have rarely had a problem with queuing. The site is/has gone through a fair bit of expansion since 2011 there being a couple of new wigwams (with built in toilets) and a new camping area below and to the right of the pods to be completed.

There is a cookhouse lower down the site with sinks (for washing up) two hobs, pots, pans and utensils, plus tables and benches. The actual pitches are huge we have set up an eight birth tent and still had room for a second on the pitch we used.

Additionally, there is a picnic bench and wheel (for a campfire) per pitch with or without EHU. The views are fantastic across the river estuary.

Please note it can get a bit draughty. A note about the area we find it a fantastic place to stay as there is so much to do and see close by, Galloway Forest and the Mull of Galloway in particular.

If you like food and beer as we do then Castle Douglas is a must.

Just returned from a 2 day break with my husband. We stayed in a wigwam, we had never been or seen a wigwam before, we were pleasantly surprised.

It has a good setup, with basic essentials; kettle, fridge, microwave and toaster. Beds very comfortable when you've got the right gear with you i. E. Plenty bedding.

Toilet/shower block in a very clean condition, site is kept to a high standard. Met Neil on arrival and he took us to the site, was helpful, gave us overview of site, easy to talk to, relaxed atmosphere.

Would highly recommend this nice quiet site to anyone and hope to be back to enjoy the walks and the lovely view even longer.

We visited this campsite and took advantage of their wigwams for 2 nights. This is to be most recommended.

The campsite and facilities were spotless, to the extent I thought that it was a new site and the owners were extremely friendly and helpful. I guess that they are or have been campers themselves as there were a lot of useful touches that many campsites just don't seem to think of.

One of the best maintained sites we have been to. We have visited many sites (mainly in a tent)and this is the first time I have been impressed enough to submit a review.

The best site I have ever been to. The star gazing is just out of this world (obviously on a clear night). The site owners were very friendly and kept the site immaculate. Same again with the toilet block, I actually cant find a bad word to say about it. Maybe if anything the wind does get up a little with the site being right on the coast but if you pitch near the barn like we did it wasn't that bad. Will definitely be going again.

We have just returned from a five day break at this site and would thoroughly recommend it.

We had a lovely pitch with uninterrupted views over farmland to the sea. There were a couple of walks from the site one of which went through woods to a small sandy beach (5 min walk). The site is great for a peaceful and relaxing break and the lady running the site was very friendly and helpful.

There was an added bonus of our own campfire / bbq and a picnic bench on the pitch itself. There was a separate toilet block and washing up area for campers. We took a quick peek inside one of the wigwams which looked great if you wanted to camp without all the hassle of a tent.

We were surprised at how much there is to do - Kirkcudbright is only about 10 mins away - this is a quite vibrant town and has a lot of artistic connections. Further afield is Castle Douglas the food town. The site is perfectly placed for trips to the coast as well as the Forest of Galloway which we would recommend - for deer, the red kite and the mountain goats. The forest drive is worth doing and we really enjoyed the Red Kite feeding station at 2pm every day - we saw over 30 Red Kites all at once.

We did quite a few of the Wickerman film sites too - in Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright itself. If you are lucky you may also get to see Ospreys nesting at Threave Castle. I think Loch Ken has quite a few activities too although we didn't get time to fit this in.

If you are interested in Gardens we'd also recommend Cally Gardens just up the road at Gatehouse of Fleet.

This is a lovely part of the world and Solway View Campsite is the perfect place from which to explore it. Thoroughly Recommended.

A late post, but having just 5 nights at a site that was polar opposites to Solway View. I absolutely see the benefit of posting a review to share the experience with fellow campers!

We spent 4 nights here and the site is perfectly placed for visiting the surrounding area. With plenty to do.

The pitches were huge and we never had the feeling that we were on top of other campers, plenty of room to stretch out.

Having the benches and fire pits were a unexpected pleasure.

Cleanliness of all of the facilities were excellent, absolutely no complaints there at all.

The site was quiet and peaceful as were the occupants.

The owners were friendly but not obtrusive.

We will definitely visit again.

We visited with our tent - two adults and a two year old. The campsite is on a working farm and is quite small with a caravan area and a tent field, a toilet block and a cooking hut.

The location is lovely with views over Kirkcudbright bay but it is a bit exposed - we were glad it wasn't windy while we were there. The tent pitches are large and well spread out - we had EHU and the cost was only £14. 50 per night - very good value.

Each pitch has a wooden picnic table and a fire pit to have your own campfire. Logs are available from the reception. The toilet block is modern and very well kept.

There are two toilets, two showers, and two sinks in each. There is also a drying rack. As this is an eco-campsite the lights in the toilet block only come on when its dark to save energy which makes it a bit gloomy in the shower area where there are no windows but a small price to pay to save the planet!

A highlight of a visit to the loos was watching the swallows who were nesting in the entrance. There is a small playground between the tent and caravan area which our toddler loved - there was a large wooden play frame with two swings, a slide and climbing frame.

There is a lovely secluded, sheltered sandy bay about 15 mins walk down through a field and woods which was great for paddling and checking out rock pools.

The cooking hut has facilities if you want to cook under cover and some information on the campsite and surrounding area. There are lots of nice places to visit in the area. We had fish and chips in Kirkcudbright one evening which made a change from camp cooking.

We also visited Mabie Farm Park and the Cream-o-Galloway organic ice cream farm which were both a big hit with our toddler (and with us!) Caerlaverock Castle was also worth a trip and we combined this with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve.

Overall we thought this was a great value campsite in a lovely location - we would return.

Have just come back from 10 nights on this site. We can only agree with other comments that this is a gem of a site.

The facilities are immaculate and spotlessly clean, despite the fact that the site was pretty full with a lot of campers as well as 5 caravans.

Neil and Patricia, the owners, are extremely friendly and helpful. The site is beautifully situated with great views.

We have a large twin axle caravan and were given a larger than average pitch. There are electric hook ups. Indeed all the pitches were larger than average with a picnic bench and brick bbq. One slight drawback was lack of tv signal (missed the Silverstone F1 Grand Prix!) but as the views were so spectacular it wasn't a big issue.

The area itself is beautiful and there are some excellent walks close at hand so no need to use the car. Would advise though that extreme care is taken when driving to the site along the last few miles as it is a single track road with passing places. A

Ll in all we had a wonderful stay and are looking forward to returning in October

Campsite in a beautiful quiet location. Pitches were really big and the picnic benches and fire pits were a great touch. Seemed to be suitable for group camping which a lot of quieter campsites can be particular about.

Agree with previous posts that drainage in the showers wasn't always adequate during busy times but other than that facilities were good. The cookhouse is also a big bonus especially if you were to be travelling light.

Kirkcudbright close by along with plenty of outdoor activities. Felt that many of the visitor attractions were reasonably priced which was a nice change (average was about £4 per adult).

Top site - we gave our ratings of 9 out of 10 because as one previous reviewer pointed out you can't equal nature.

We joined the Caravan & Camping Club just to go here on the basis of the earlier reviews. All the positives of the site are spot on.

We went there because of the open fires, location, and size of the pitches.

I'd say one of the best features here is that because the pitches are so big (we had a large six man tent, car, picnic bench and open fire area in the space and could have had another 6 man tent in it!)even if the site was full it would still be a relaxed, spacious site.

Tips - the main wind comes from the West which gives most of the site shelter, when we were there it was from the East which blows off the sea - wind breaks defo.

If it's quiet being close to the cook house was a bonus, though when it is busy I would ask for a pitch away from this.

The owners (Patricia and Neil) are relaxed and helpful, being campers themselves they have got the site just right.

Excellent coastal walk (Solway Coastal Trail) to Brighouse Bay (around 3 miles) where the nearby caravan park has a bar with local Sulwath Brewery beers. Also a pub in Borgue (borg) which will open in the evening if you phone ahead, adds a bit of novelty!

Last thing to recommend is the Galloway Smokehouse about 1/2 hours drive which has the best smoked food I know and at a very reasonable price in the shop.

We thought the area was like a quiet Cornwall with it's own micro climate, stunning coastline etc

Ps being a Victor Meldrew when it comes to kids, there is a huge adventure play area to keep the little mites out of grumpy campers hair!
