We had a lovely stay at tollgate rubbish weather though! Really enjoyed it however the daily trek to the beach was a bit of a bummer for my two girls 4 & 5, we resorted to walk there and on to town and bus back most day's. The site was nice and clean facilities great but pitches were a bit small we were on the end and cars were very close when turning into our field.
On the plus side the farm bit and animals were an added bonus and the butchers in Perranporth were brilliant also we used the snack bar a few times this was a real bonus on our last day as we could pack up all the kitchen and still have breakfast ;0) On the whole I would recommend this site but it's a long walk to the beach with little ones!

As the other reviews state, this is a great campsite. We spent two weeks here in some of the most horrendous weather - gale force winds and lashing rain - what fun! Thankfully, the campsite shop sold storm pegs for cheaper than anywhere else and had an inexpensive, sturdy wooden-stake windbreak to replace our fancy Outwell one which buckled and sheared with the first breeze.
Friendly, helpful owners - good with local knowledge; good chips from the takeaway, didn't try the other offerings. Secure, calm, kids could wander freely, feeding time in the morning for the chickens and rabbits entertaining. No waiting for the regularly-cleaned showers or toilets ever. A good yomp through the golf course next door gets you to the beautiful beach in about 20 minutes (with a 6-year-old in tow - would be faster without) - we only had one good day of sunshine (in the whole of the two weeks!) so we weren't able to profit as much from the seaside as anticipated, but it is perfectly situated for touring everything else in Cornwall, so the two weeks flew by.
There was a goodly amount of campers who had been returning there for a numbers of years - always a good sign. Will happily stay again when next in Cornwall.

First I have to say that I wondered if the site would live up to all the fantastic reviews I had read - and it did! Fantastic site, perfect size for a young family. The owners were always helpful, friendly and nothing seemed too much trouble. The toilets/showers were spotless and although the site was full we only had to queue once in the whole week. It was quite a trek down (and back up) into Perranporth so we tended to drive or bus which was easy enough. All in all a great site, would visit again.

Stayed on this site for 3 days as was all that was available. As other reviews have said it is a lovely site, showers etc very good and clean, the owners were friendly and helpful. We wanted a site near to Perranporth ( walking distance) which it is but its easier to walk down and catch the bus back! The take away service on site is fab lovely food and not overpriced. Would stay there again.

Just arrived home from visiting tollgate for 2 weeks. Site was very nice, showers and toilets were very clean. It is an excellent site to use as a base for getting out and about cornwall. Perranporth is just a mile away with plenty of shops and lovely beaches. Our dogs really enjoyed the sand dunes which was across from site and was within a 15 min walk to the beach.Despite the poor weather we had.We still enjoyed our time at this campsite

Fabulous campsite, lovely people.
Pitches were everything we wanted and more.
The showers and toilets were spotless and checked regularly.
Children loved the play area and the animals.
We left as the weather was sooo bad. No fault of the camp.
Gets booked up early and I now know why.
Hoping to buy a tourer next year so that we can return.

It is situated on the bend and one mile to Perranporth. The owner's were father and son and the son was always out cleaning the toilets.
The pitches were all spacious and it was lovely to pitch next to the hedge as there were lots of birds in and out singing. The animal corner was a hit with our then 10 year old and he made a point of getting up early and helping the owner clean and feed the animals. He took us up there and named all the animals!
The site is next door to Haven and it your cheeky like us you can use their chippy, pizza place but you can't get into the other areas as there is security on the door.
There is a small co-op in Perranporth and the beach is lovely with a busy high street. The only thing I will say about this site is that the time we stayed the elsan point was in the floor with a raised cover so you had to lift the wastemaster of the ground and watch out for splashback.

We stayed at Tollgate Farm for a week at the end of June / beginning of July 2008 and were very impressed with the site.
The staff on the site were friendly and very, very helpful, both on the phone and in person. Although the reception office was often shut, there was a bell to ring and someone would appear in less than a minute. At other times, a sign on the door explained that they were working on the site and gave a mobile number to ring if you couldn't find them. The information given was excellent, plenty of information signs around the site (cashpoint locations, useful numbers etc) and a handy leaflet giving routes into Perranporth and other useful info.
The site is very nature-friendly, there were plenty of rabbits roaming around the site and the petting farm provided us entertainment even though we are adults without children! Our pitch was in the corner of Perran field so we were bordered on two sides by hedge; this provided us with plenty of privacy and also chances to see the wildlife. We even had a frog take up residence under our tent!
The pitches were very big; we have a large tent and a van, and we still had a lot of room. This was great for our two dogs as they had plenty of room to roam around on their tethers (although not all dogs were kept tethered on the site, which led to a skirmish or two between other dogs and meant we had to be more vigilant with ours).
The toilet / shower block could not be faulted; the facilities were spotlessly clean. I was impressed to see that grass and mud that was on the shower floor from people's shoes was cleared away within ten minutes. The toilet roll was soft (very important!), and liquid soap available. The showers were hot, adjustable (very useful for short people like me) and free. A hairdryer was available on a 20p meter which gave about 5 minutes use. A shaving socket was available in the gents. Even the washing-up area was clean and well kept.
I liked the thoughtful touches: bricks to put the disposable barbecue on to avoid scorching the ground, the recycling facilities, charging electrical items (even our laptop) for a donation to the surf lifesavers / air ambulance.
The site was peaceful and seemed secure. We were in a field with adults and dogs, no children, which we appreciated as it was quieter and there were no ball games for the dogs to want to join!
The walk down to Perranporth was very pleasant with some stunning views (although the walk back up gets the heart pumping). There is a large area (600 acres) right next to the site for dog walking which we found extremely useful.
The take-away food bar was shut; presumably it is only open in school holidays (although nothing stated this).
It was a great site at a very reasonable price; we'd definitely stay there again and recommend it to others.

What a fantastic site! The site offers visitors a choice of fields; giving the option of either a family orientated experience or, for those of us without children, a chance for peace and tranquility to just enjoy the outdoors.
The owners are very helpful and friendly, giving us information and advice on the various routes to reach Perranporth town and the beach.
Our pitch was very generous, given the size of our tent - which is huge! The facilities were always clean and warm, although we were lucky with the weather and had a scorching week.
It's a lovely walk to the beach over the dunes, either through the Haven site next door or over the golf course. The only downside is the walk back up the hill - particularly in the dark after a pint or two of the local cider, Rattler!
The beach is gorgeous, dog friendly and great for children, with plenty of rock pools to play in. There are several bars on the beach front, with plenty more in town itself, all serving food. Perranporth town is a typical seaside resort which, although busy, has a relaxed feel.
Access to the rest that South Cornwall has to offer is relatively easy from here; a short drive up or down the coast takes you to Newquay, Padstow or St.Ives and Landsend etc.
Would we go back to this site. Yes, most definitely - but endeavour to get fit in preparation for the walk up cardiac hill back home this time!

No.In party – 5 adults in three tents
Having arrived at Tollgate Farm on a Saturday morning promptly at 11:00am we were pleased to be able to get straight onto our pitch after a long journey from Wales. The reception / shop is small but perfectly adequate; we only had call to use it once when we have run out of bread and it was sold out in the shop unfortunately but it does sell the basics and seems quite reasonable. There is a larger convenience store on the Haven site next door which is about a 15 minute walk which we used every morning as it allowed us to give the dogs their morning stroll and also they sold the morning papers there as the site doesn’t sell newspapers.
We stayed in the Perran field, the site is split up into a few fields that helps keep the intimate friendly feel and I liked the hedges surrounding each one which were a huge source of wildlife, the amount of rabbits alone were enough to keep us amused counting them at sunset whilst we were out tucking into a BBQ. The Perran field is not flat, it gentle slopes in two directions but it wasn’t a problem as we pitched feet pointing down the hill and there were several caravans and other tents that obviously had no problems either. The Perran field has a small toilet block that houses plenty of toilets (at least 6 I think in the women’s) and two showers for the women and the same for the men. The block was always clean and the showers were good as they were the electric type so you can choose the height of the shower head, the strength of the spray, the temperature and the best thing was it was included in the pitch fee so no saving your 20p coins every day.
We had a good nose around the site and all the pitches were extremely generous, there is a large ball game field for kids with football nets and a great play area for the smaller kids with swings etc. There is also an animal area, we didn’t go over but they have goats and stuff that kids can go over and pet and help feed I think which is great for family campers. The other toilet block servicing the other fields was much bigger, seemed more modern and also housed the launderette which we used several times (£3 per wash). Push button showers in this block though so I am glad we were on the Perran field. The owners seem to place their customers in particular fields depending on makeup of your party. For example there weren’t any kids in our field and all the campers with pets (we had 3 dogs with us) seemed to be in our field which was perfect for us as I would rather go to an adult only type site and I am sure there are others who would prefer to be separated from campers with dogs.
There seemed to be EHU on most pitches apart from one of the fields which seemed to house tents which didn’t require it. There is plenty of land surrounding the site for dog walking and they can be let off the lead to run their legs off. Site owners were very discreet and I never felt watched or judged at all, we are the type that like to be left alone but when we did need some advice on the local bus services the owners kindly lent us a comprehensive local bus timetable book for us to make our travel plans whilst eating breakfast.
The walk down to Perranporth (amazing beach) is very pleasant, it crosses through the golf course near the site, it is very steeply downhill but apart from some nasty big steps right at the end it was pretty painless, however I did not attempt the walk back up the hill, it is a twenty minute walk all uphill so I opted for the local bus up to the entrance to the site on the way back and that was a very reasonable £1.20.
The site offers the usual mobile phone charging and ice block freezing but as we had EHU we didn’t take that up. There is a takeaway on site that does breakfast rolls, pizza, chips, burgers etc. I can’t comment on the quality as it was closed when we were there, I think it is only open in peak season and the kids school holidays as it was open for the Whitsun week before we got there. Prices advertised in the window are very reasonable.
The closest place to get a pub meal is probably Perranporth which is down the hill as I described before, there is a gorgeous pub on the beach called the Watering Hole and another one with a long complicated name that begins with Ty. That has a nice beer garden, we ate at the Ty and it was good quality pub grub but the best we found was called the Smugglers Den Inn which is about a ten minutes drive down the lanes from the site. It is dog friendly and serves amazing cod in their own special batter (Try the Brothers Strawberry Cider too – delicious). Beautiful thatched place with big beer garden and top draw menu. It was £10 for the cod so the prices weren’t too bad either.
There is obviously plenty to do in Cornwall, we visited the Blue Reef Aquarium, the Royal Cornwall Show, Lands End, Cornish Cyder Farm, Looe, St Ives, Padstow, Lizard Point, Holywell Bay Fun Park and many more things that we couldn’t do as we had pets with us.
Pitch fees are very reasonable for Cornwall, we went to Trevornick last year for the same two weeks and this time it cost us significantly less. Site is very easy to find, there was no noise after 10:30pm, no road noise in our field and overall the site had a very cared for appearance.
Would I visit this site again.Definitely yes.
