August 2004 Everything submitted by previous reviewers can be relied upon as being accurate. The facilties are extremely basic (especially the Gents!) but the site in general is fantastic. Splendid scenery, Gordale Beck trickling through the site and the waterfalls just five minutes walk away. BBQ's are okay but please keep them off the grass: Malcolm (eccentric proprietor) explained that he keeps the old ones for campers to use as "heat shields" to protect the grass!! Remember to take all your provisions as there aren't any shops to speak of for miles around. The "Listers Arms" (Malham Village) offer a breathtaking selection of traditional, well kept beers, fantastic food and the WC's are truly exceptional! Caravaners beware - a pretty steep descent awaits you as you approach the site. Park at the bottom of the hill and ask Malcolm to open the Footpath Gate for an easier entrance to the site.

June 2004 This is a beautiful site, your view from anywhere on the site will be 'Gordale Scar' and sheep. you can walk to the waterfall on the site in 2mins.
They allow all bbq's, the owners are nice but you wont see much of them. Take 10p's for the shower, which at first looks a bit old but is nice and roomy and will go very hot at any time of the day
I recommend it.

End June 2004 This has to be one of the most stunning campsites. The setting is spectacular as the site is located in the valley leading to the Scar. The waterfall was only 5 minutes walk from our tent! As mentioned in numerous reviews, the facilities are very basic but the location more than makes up for that. The site appears to be very popular with Duke of Edinburgh groups so expect to queue for the facilities and unlike mentioned in a previous review, everyone was mixed in together. I’d also recommend that you take some bottled water as the drinking water is not particularly pleasant!!
The infamous disposable BBQs are still there! I asked Malcolm if he was collecting them and he replied that he was collecting them in so far as he hadn’t quite got rid of them yet!! Classic!!
There are a number of walks in the area including a circular one that takes you to Malham Cove, then into the village for an essential pint of Old Peculiar before bringing you back to the site along the river via Janets Foss. Just beware of the bullocks in one of the fields along the riverside!!! The site is definitely worth a visit purely because of its location – just be prepared to rough it a bit!

June 2003 Would recommend a visit - great for everyone - kids are kept away from couples / groups of adults, groups of adults / couples kept away from families - excellent idea! Everyone has a good time! Toilets not the best but who cares at a site so beautiful. Has a lovely hot shower - don't be put off that it's scruffy - just wear your flip flops and take some 20ps. Eccentric owners who run it well and keeps an eye on everyone but are happy for people to have a great time. The pile of disposable BBQs as mentioned by previous reviewer is still there and presumably getting higher!

May Day Bank Holiday Weekend 2004 Wow - This is your first impression on approaching the site, and it remains with you each and every time you take in the surroundings of this one-off site. I could talk about the basic facilities, but this has been covered in other reviews. If dozens of showers pumping an endless supply of steaming water floats your boat, then this might not be the site for you. However, if you are prepared to 'rough it' a little and use the basic (but always clean) loos and wash-up area, you are in for a massive treat. Set amidst simply stunning scenery, the site is perfectly based for exploring the Scar, the village of Malham and many other local areas of interest. The riverside walk from the site into Malham is an absolute must, 1.5 miles of magic! Also the malts available at the Lister or the Hikers Bar are a must to sample, a fantastic collection which would satisfy the most fanatical of whisky drinkers! Everyone should try this site at least once, *****/5 for the sheer beauty of the place. We will certainly be going back.

27/02/04-01/03/04 I have to be front up here and admit that this is one of my favourite sites anywhere. It is no coincidence that I love the Dales - probably more than anywhere else in the UK - and that The Lister Arms in Malham is one of my favourite pubs!
Anyway, not having been to either Malham or the Dales for a couple of years we decided that the last weekend of February was a good time to aim for. You know the drill, walking in early spring when the air is clear and there aren't many punters about - important in such a popular area. Anyways, pitched up on the Friday evening at about 4.30pm as it started to snow! Went to the pub, came back and got into bed. Slept pretty well despite the sub-zero temperatures and got up the next morning to what I can only describe as 'eye watering beauty'. It was simply stunning: A light dusting of snow, deeper where it had drifted against the dry stone walls, sheep in the field and brilliant sunlight slanting down from where it was rising above the fell side. The defile of Gordale Scar where it cuts back into the hillside is dramatic even in the worst conditions but on a bright wintry morning it is set into a stunning relief of shadows and spears of light. With the grass bright and lush green on the other side of the valley where it had the sun had been falling for an hour it looked like something out of a fantasy novel. Half a roll of film later it was time to put the kettle on.
I've seen Gordale now in all weathers and it never ceases to surprise and enchant me. Whether it's hosing down and the beck chugs and churns wildly or on a quiet summer's evening with a beer kept cool in the stream after a day on the tops - try walking over to Arncliffe & back - it is superb. Don't worry about the basic facilities or the oddities of the family - it's all part of the charm! Just concentrate on a truly remarkable campsite.

July 2003 What can I say?? Fantastic location! The kids (old and young)loved the stream and the waterfall. The sun setting over Goredale Scar is beautiful! Malham has pubs, cafes, a village shop and is a lovely walk over the tops to get there from the site (or short drive!).
Facilities are basic - only one shower - costs 10p. Toilets are clean. The owner and his family are a little eccentric, but friendly. They seem to like hoarding things...you can't miss their collection of disposable barbeques!! In no way does this spoil the experience of camping in this lovely place. We were in a tent, wouldn't like to take the caravan as the approach road is very narrow (single track - passing places) but a couple of brave souls had brought their vans. Try it yourself - enjoy!

August 2002 As you travel into Malham and turn right over the bridge the road narrows in a small winding country lane. The lane goes up and down for a mile or so until suddenly you are greeted with an arial view of tents! As you descend down the hill you are suddenly aware of the massive valley sides covered in rock signalling the start of Gordale Scar.
The Gordale Scar footpath (for hardy walkers) runs through the campsite, as does a small stream home for ducks and the entrance for the occasional wayward sheep from the next field.
The views from this campsite are truly magnificent. When you venture out of your tent in the morning you are struck by the spectacular landscape and breathtaking views.
On the downside the campsite facilities are pretty basic but no one appears to mind. No fresh food can be bought from Malham (so take what you need!) but on the upside it has a couple of good pubs and cafes.
This campsite is perfect for sitting, chilling with a beer and taking in the night air.

August 2002 Stayed for just one night - just me and my two young nieces. We camped by the beck amid beautiful scenery that just can't be expressed in photos. We were surrounded by ducks and sheep (which Lauren and Ashleigh both loved). I enjoyed the tranquillity and awesome views, as did both my nieces. They also enjoyed playing in the relatively shallow water (paddling) of the beck, as did I when it got warm. The owner was friendly and welcoming and, all in all, we were all desperately sad to leave, with both nieces begging me to promise that we would come back and that we would never camp anywhere else!
The only drawback was the cold at night which will be solved next time by more covers (as you see, I myself am determined to return). Although 1.5mile from Malham, there were plenty of people around (visiting the scar) and, during the day, a small refreshments car served hot tea and cold drinks, and food.
All in all, a relatively basic site with few drawbacks which were more than compensated for by the advantages offered. Truly beautiful.
