Arrived on the Bank Holiday Friday and expected the worst when we saw how busy the camp was, but how wrong we were. Both ourselves and our friends were shown to our pitches within 10 min of arrival which was a lovely setting near the woods and surrounded by blue bells.
The children soon found the play area's which were excellent. Showers and toilet's were immaculate considering the volume of campers.
The only negative was the bar which we found lacking in choice and very expensive. The second night we found a mile away the Moss Cottage Hotel/Pub which had just recently been taken over by a new manager Steve. The food was excellent and the staff made us feel very welcome.
They have a function room which contained a full size bouncy castle free of charge which the kids loved before and after their meal. It was so good we went there the second night also!
Had a great weekend and will definitely be going back to the camp and pub.

We stayed in tents, no electric.
Great site and the kids loved it. Efficient checking in and escort to pitch, and helpful with information etc. Very busy as it was bank holiday but we had a pitch we were very happy with - right at the back of the site, near the woods, and in plenty of space.
Loads for the kids to do, though glad we took the bikes as the site was so vast! When they went out we didn't see them for hours at a time. The whole site is fenced in and secure. Brilliant for kids.
Showers were strong and hot, though I didn't see the floors getting cleaned very often, so a bit muddy in each cubicle.
Facilities were good if you needed them. Supermarkets within walking distance.
The woodland trail was lovely and plenty of public footpaths around to go further afield. The map given to us of walks outside the site was outdated and not easy to follow. The Newfoundland Pub is derelict!
We had a fantastic time, and would recommend.

Went after reading the great reviews on UKCampsite.co.uk. This site is not instantly welcoming, when you first arrive at the automatic barrier you are greeted with a load of instructions of what not to do etc.
The immediate surrounding area is very run down. The local pub is boarded up and so is the social club further up the road. You have to go further to discover some nicer pubs for eating out etc.
We pitched in the bottom corner of the field and it wasn't until the evening that we realised how noisy the main road was. The pitches were better for the tenters without electric.
They were more private and away from the busy main road (which attracts a lot of motorbikers) The site is not far away from the local police stations helicoptor landing pad, so so on the first night (friday) at least 3 helicoptor call outs woke our 2 year old daughter. It is also directly under a flight path, so it was very noisy at night.
The club house was disappointing- its a tiny room above the cafe and it only opens on the evening. It was clean and tidy but just a log cabin with a small bar at one end. The food in the cafe was very basic and small choice, but handy for getting chips to add to your meal back at the tent. There was no shop on site for papers, milk etc which seemed odd.
The facilities were well cleaned, but on the busy nights of the bank holiday there were long queues for the showers. (only 3 showers in the gents and judging by the queue from the ladies, I reckon probably the same). The site felt crowded, but the grass was in superb condition. They make you park your car away from your tent on the tarmac near the shop during busy periods so they can fit more on.
Trips out during the day were good. Went to bakewell and matlock baths. One night we got a Chinese in from the local takeaway called 'wok this way'. They were brilliant- they even asked us if we wanted foil containers instead of plastic ones to keep it all warm- they rang us as they were setting off so we could meet them at the security barrier.
The best part about the site was the facilities for the kids. We saw the train, but couldn't see any donkey rides. The fishing pond is a good idea, but I think you have to take your own tackle. We had to leave a night early due to our daughter being ill, and we asked for a refund. The response was to refer to one of the many signs on the reception desk! (I was expecting it) they couldn't give me a reason why, but they offered us a free night if we went back.

Been using this camp for the last three years, must say its the best campsite I know, facilities are second to none, excellent play areas for kids, great fishing, good cafe and bar, games room, gym, washing /ironing facilities, showers are spotless and always hot and powerful, a train takes the kids on free rides around th camp, all staff really friendly and hardworking. Hoping to get a few winter weekends in this year especially new year.
Plenty of nearby supermarkets and matlock only 15 mins drive away.

Fantastic site went here with my sons who are 7yrs n 2yrs and they both loved every moment, spending every minute they could in the play areas. Food from cafe was lovely. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Toilets and showers were very clean and well maintained. In fairness words can not describe this site its one you need to visit to really enjoy as much as we did

We have just been to this site for the weekend and although it is one of the the most expensive we've been to it is certainly one of the best.
We found the wardens very polite and helpful and the site is very well kept (clean toilets and showers were very nice ).
We were with two of our grand children and they enjoyed the free train ride which went around each day and the three play areas around camp.
We would recommend this site and can't wait to go back.

The staff are very friendly and were sympathetic to us when on arrival I discovered I had left my wallet at home. It was OK to set up and then return home to get it. The reception area was clean and tidy and businesslike.
The warden showed us personally to our pitch (which was up a very steep hill).
The caravan area is weird. Its like they have thrown a load of electric boxes into the air and where they have landed is where they have made the pitches, there's no normality to it at all. The pitch itself had water electric and drain, but the whole area was hardcore and rubble and putting up the awning was very difficult, the ground being very hard below the surface.
There are many seasonal vans and some are in need of cleaning. A lot of them were very grubby and some of them had awnings that had partially collapsed. It was quite apparent also that people lived permanently on the site, I saw at least 2 different taxi companies on cars parked outside caravans. There were also a lot of workers using the site, you could see them leaving early in the morning and coming back at tea time in their green fluorescent vests.
At the rear of the site it sounded like there were some boarding kennels. Dogs constantly barking.
I found the toilet/shower block to be clean, the showers were very good, powerful and hot. But my wife said the ladies weren't very clean at all.
The recycling and waste disposal bins weren't emptied while we were there (Thurs-Sun) with rubbish overflowing out of the area.
The bar wasn't open but the snack bar doubled up as the pub during the evening but only selling cans but again the staff was very friendly and sociable (if the site is advertised as open all year then it should be stated that not everything is open)
The play area for the kids looked very good indeed.
There are various supermarkets in the surrounding towns, its a 5 minute drive to the nearest newsagent, breadshop or for basic provisions. There's no pub within walking distance (there was one just outside the site but its all boarded up)

We stayed here for two nights, and were bored.
The showers were very clean and warm.
The shop had no milk, we were told the local shop was ½ mile easy walk, however, after walking for 40 minutes uphill in the pouring rain we came across a local shop and then walked back downhill in the pouring rain.
It was early season and very few of the facilities were available but sill paid £58. 00 for two nights. Why do these sites stay open during low season, charge full money and not have full facilities?

We stayed here for 3 nights over new year. Check in was simple and the owners were very helpful in finding us two pitches together as my brother in law had his caravan too. They even lent my brother in law an extension for his hookup as we had pitched close together and his was about a foot short. Thanks for that.
The site is great, loads of kids play areas which were all very good.
The toilets and showers were immaculate and the shower was the most powerful I've ever used anywhere.
Looks like there's a fair few seasonal caravans here, which if I were the owner of the site I would ask the owners of these caravans to give them a little TLC as some were dirty and looked old.
The cafe and bar was great and the prices were too, pint of carling £2.50.Great.
On new years eve there was a disco / karaoke and the owners laid on a fantastic free buffet and free wine and it really was a great night which we apreciated a lot, kids had a ball. At midnight the owners set off some great fireworks, no expense spared, these were fab too.
In reference to the odd review further down the list regarding site owner (Darren) which had worried us a little. We all found him to be a very friendly, helpful and a hardworking man. He was very helpful in the search for my daughters teddy bear hat which we eventually found.
All in all this is a great site, especially suited to families with lots for the kids to do.
Already looking forward to returning again.

My two teenage boys and I visited this site as a base for a short mountain-biking break in the Peak district following recommendations from this site and a friend at work. Here are the good points:
It’s quite a large site and it looks as though it could get busy at peak times but we arrived on a Sunday afternoon in August and there was plenty of space around us.
The shower/toilet blocks are immaculate, the showers are free, hot and powerful and we never saw any queues.
There’s a cycle track around the perimeter that’s fun to ride.
The site isn’t very far from a number of main roads and towns, but despite that it’s fairly quiet - although there was some noise from a nearby quarry starting at around 8:00 am
It’s convenient for a number of attractions. Try the Midland Railway Centre just around the corner. And cyclists should try the Tissington Trail (which is flat) and the High Peak Trail (although this is a former railway too it has three inclines which are hard work going up, but fun to come down again)
The only negative point that we can think of is that cars aren’t allowed onto the pitches (except for loading and unloading) which can be a faff if you use your vehicle for secure storage as we do.
Also, caravan pitches are on tarmac/gravel which must make pitching an awning difficult.
We had a great time at Golden Valley and we’d recommend it to anyone who wants a base for visiting Derbyshire.
