Nothing golden here
Have just come back from. A 1 night stay here and will not go back. We were placed on the top field next to drunken idiots music went on till gone 12 kept our child awake no contact details for reception then low and behold 6 am they're up and outside making a racket 7. 30 am music on again no sign of. Any staff. Toilets and showers very dirty rusty fittings every were random rubbish dumped in big piles around the site not pleasant at all, drunks all over the place having brought. Alcohol from the bar wandering around the site In the midde of the day Beirut is a safer place to take your children and all of this. At the price of £36 per night do your self a favour and don't bother !

Disappointing second time around. Its overpriced to be honest for what it is. Pitches are ok although the top field I found better. It was a little boggy in areas but we managed to pitch ok. There is nothing to do locally due to the poor surrounding area. If your idea of camping is pitching and spending the entire time here getting drunk with everyone else and shouting loudly until 2 am in the morning then come on down. There didn't seem to be any wardens dealing with the noise.
Showers and toilets were nice.
1st time around in 2012 it was better but the weather was poor so maybe dampened all the spirits of the big drinkers if you pardon the pun.
Not the best and not the worst site we have ever used but well expensive for what it is.

Mixed views on this campsite. We were shown to a pitch on arrival which was at the top end of the site, it was difficult to get to with a caravan as there were so many cars and vans parked along the roadside. When we got to the pitch it was clearly not big enough for our caravan and certainly wouldn't have taken our porch awning as well (we don't have a particularly large van) We went back to the bottom end of the site and were put down there. We were pitched end to end with 3 other caravans and there was very little room between us which would be a problem if a fire broke out. Whilst the hard standing pitches are practical they are tarmac chippings so it feels a bit like pitching up in a car park. A motorhome was pitched up the day after we arrived and the view from their pitch was the back of our caravans.
The facilities at the site were good, toilets and showers clean, a bathroom which was FOC. Excellent play grounds and activities for the children. The cafe offered a good selection of food and breakfast at £4 inc drink and toast. The wildlife pond is a nice little place to go and watch the tadpoles and the fishing lake seemed well stocked and very popular.
I'm not sure if we would return because of the pitch situation. I think it would be easier for the staff if they asked the size of your caravan when booking to save them having to run around trying to find a pitch. The units are parked way too close together for safety and as the pitches are not marked out it feels a bit disorganised and crowded

The campsite is in a beautiful location yet close to the M1 for easy access. We went with another set of friends so 4 adults and 5 kids in tow. We had an excellent spot at the top of the campsite near the shower block and the playground, very sheltered with bank surrounding us. The play area was great, good open areas for kids to play.
Although only 1 shower block for the top part of the site it was cleaned regularly and never seemed busy (we went bank HOL weekend).
Down sides if your at the far end of the top field they have put porta loos which didn't look very inviting.
Chance your arm on getting a go on the zip wire and road train as they operated as and when staff were available. One member of staff was quite rude when asked about the train.
Also if your a caravan owner ask to be away from the top playground / shower block

Just returned from a couple of nights at this campsite. The visit was initially to check the place out prior to the 'Indietracks' Festival which is held nearby at the end of July.
It is clear that Golden Valley is predominantly geared for families and there were children enjoying themselves on the extensive play facilities. But, to my pleasant surprise all the kids seemed very well behaved and there was absolutely no noise at night!
My wife and I (no kids) found a quiet corner with a great view overlooking a pond and fields. We are avid walkers so were up early. I would recommend the on-site café (open at 8am). There is a basic but very reasonably priced menu, but ask if you'd like something else as the staff, in particular a lovely lady (I learned is the owners mum!) are extremely friendly and very helpful. Not only with regards the café but also a wealth of knowledge on the surrounding area.
The toilets and shower blocks were spotless at all times, really some of the best we'd ever seen.
Security was very good as there were barriers at the vehicular entrance, visitors being provided with a key code.
The Midland Railway Centre is only a 20 minute walk through some pleasant countryside.
Basic shops 20 min walk up Newlands Road.
The only disappointment (which has nothing to do with the site) is, the pub shown on OS maps to be next door, The Newland Arms, is derelict at the time of our visit. Saying that, there is a perfectly adequate bar on -site!
I would highly recommend this site and look forward to visiting again!

On the way to Golden Valley my Sat Nav decided to take us through an industrial estate, at which point the wife turned to me and said where the bleep bleep are you taking us! At this point I should state this is our first camping adventure with our four year old son. The Sat Nav route must be a generic route as signs on the industrial estate showed us the way.
On arriving on site it was reassuring to see automatic barriers to get in adding to the security of the site. On arriving at reception the lady was very friendly and offered sound advice on which plots would be suitable for us. On her advice we made our way to plot 5-8. Ample room to set up the tent, which was welcoming as being beginners and the first time we had ever tried! After one or two arguments we set off to tour the site and this is where golden valley excels in my opinion.
The shower block, toilets are 1st class showers are warm and powerful, all very well maintained. The site is very family friendly with numerous children play areas which are in my four year olds words fantastic. On the first morning we headed down to the on site cafe and this is where we met the owners mother who not only cooked a beautiful breakfast at a reasonable price but also gave us good advice on local attractions to visit. The breakfast was so good we went back on the second morning.
To sum up the site it offers everything that we were looking for family friendly, clean, fantastic facilities. Not being a experienced camper when I handed over £50 for two nights for a patch of grass I was not best pleased but I would pay much more for what turned out to be the best first family camping break that would could have hoped for. Thank you golden valley. We will be back to see you sometime this year.

We have just returned from a fantastic weekend at Golden Valley over the May Day weekend. This was our first visit & certainly won't be our last. On arrival the reception staff were very friendly & took us to our pitch, which was located in the top field.
We were allowed to pitch anywhere using any of the 4 hook ups. Our friends arrived after us & pitched up opposite with no problem. You have to leave your vehicle on the gravel next to your tent which was fine & I can see why they stipulate that. The pitches were level & a really great size although some would need an extra long hook up lead to reach the electric points. The shower facilities were always clean, albeit the shower curtains were too low & were a hindrance. Just raise then by about 6inches!
The children's facilities were fantastic with 3 different play areas & a sand pit. They had body sorbs & a zip wire ( extra charge) but our children thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The cafe was pleasant & served alcohol also. My only complaint is the limited menu but maybe I'm being picky.
The bar had entertainment in the evening, either a disco or karaoke.
The only downside was the slight road noise & the helicopters flying over the site for most of the night. Take earplugs!
Overall we had a fantastic 4 days & will certainly be returning for a long weekend.

Visited campsite for the 1st time this week. Friendly and helpful staff. Shower rooms not the greatest but okay and powerful showers. Child Facilities are there to use but unfortunately didn't get to see any due to bad weather preventing anything being open for our children. A shame as the games room quite poor and dingy, unless you want to spend lots of 50p's on the 3 machines they had in there, nothing to do on the site in bad weather. I have to say like previous reviews it is beyond us why they have car park gravel everywhere when the whole area in tarmac would make a total transition to the site. If the site was modernised would definitely return.

My family (2 adults and 3 children aged 5, 3, and 18months) have just returned from a weekend at Golden Valley. The kids loved it and there was lots of open space for them to run around safely. They also loved the playgrounds which are suitable for children of all ages and spent ages in the huge undercover sand-pit.
The toilets and showers were clean and the staff at the site friendly.
We went to the steam railway only half a mile away and went on a steam train, it also has a museum, cafe and playground. This was great for a cheap day out that the kids loved.
We got fish and chips one night from a really lovely fish and chip restaurant just on the way into Ripley. It was cooked fresh to order and was fantastic.
Overall I would recommend this site.

Just returned a day early (first time ever) from this campsite for Easter 2013.
First the good points:
• With the exception of the very grumpy and unhelpful man on reception the staff were efficient and friendly.
• The play areas were very good and well maintained.
• The water in the showers was hot and plentiful.
• The free train and trailer rides around the site were greatly enjoyed by the children.
Now the not so good:
• Check out Google maps before booking. We had pitch 9 and expected some hardstanding and some grass. There was no grass and just felt like we were pitching in a car park literally. Granted cold weather and bare trees can make things feel grim but even on a sunny evening I would not like to sit out on tarmac/hard shingles outside of the awning. All the hard pitches are like this so be warned.
• Pitch 9 is near the play park which was supposed to be good for children however you do have the traffic going right by your door to get to other fields. It is not child safe.
• The showers near the sand pit are hot however the grotty black shower curtains that hang from eye level and flop around the base of the shower tray blocking the plug hole is annoying. It is also sign city telling you to leave the shower curtains inside the trays – if you want people to do this you need to fit them properly.
The Valley is not Golden far from it. We did venture on the Wildlife trail but was amazed at the amount of rubbish. I mean black bags dumped along the pathway. We quickly gave up on the walk and returned to the site.
We will not be returning.
