It looked so lovely in the brochure. Showers & loos are relics from the 70's. Cold showers. No loo roll. Not enough cubicles. No space in the cubicle to change. Pitches so close you could clearly hear conversations in the next tent. Shop very poorly stocked - the owners are really missing out here. We were near to the clubhouse so it was very noisy at night, especially at closing time. Groups of young teens wandering around, yelling and screaming. Cycling in the dark. On the plus side, you can order fresh bread daily. The pool was nice and spacious with plenty of loungers. Full english breakfast good value. Our children (7 & 9) had a great time but they always do when camping. All in all a cheap site though

We went to this site as my OH visited it as a child / teenager and spent most summers here in the 70’s and 80’s, so we though that it would be the perfect spot to explore the island from. We weren’t disappointed. The campsite arranged our ferry crossing for us at a greatly reduced rate - £55.00 instead of Red Funnels cheapest £120. We arrived Saturday afternoon and my OH exclaimed that it hadn’t changed – she mentioned this to the ‘receptionist’ who stated that there had been changes, for the better.
We had been allocated a pitch on booking; however, on arrival we were told that we could pick our own pitch, as there were very few units booked in over the week. We chose a pitch at the bottom of the site – next to the hedge and looking out on the whole site. The pitches are good sizes and well defined, however, we noted that some were quite sloped.
The shower blocks adjacent to the touring field had definitely not changed and are accessed via a small, narrow, stone humped bridge – this could be very difficult for wheelchair users and the less agile. On this point, we noted no disabled facilities in the block at all. The mens shower block had four showers and four toilet cubicles, and I am told by my OH that the ladies had the same. The water in the showers was always hot when we used them, however the pressure is not that great. They were always clean and tidy. Coin operated hair dryer in both. The washing up room was cleaned daily and there was always plenty of hot water.
We were disappointed to find that the swimming pool was closed during our stay. It closes at the beginning of September, which was a pity as my OH wanted to re-enact her Bronze swimming badge. ;) There is a club and bar on site, however the club was not opened and we only saw the bar open on our first night. (There was CC rally on that weekend who had a social on in the bar.) The shop was quite well stocked and when it is closed you are encouraged to go to reception should you require anything. There is a takeaway on site, however we never sampled any of their wares. We used the launderette during our stay, due to our fishing expeditions, and once again found it to be well kept and clean. The washing machine was fine, if somewhat expensive (£3.00) however we were disappointed at the performance of the tumble dryers. The pitch and putt was great fun once we managed to retrieve the flags that had been put away at season end. There is also a fantastic looking ‘adventure playground’ for the under 12.
The site is exceptionally well kept and cared for, if a tiny bit dated. The pitches were mown at least twice during our weeks stay and the bins are emptied every morning. A great base for exploring the whole island and less than 3 miles from Ventnor. Appuldurcombe House and the Appuldurcombe Owl and Falconry Centre are within walking distance of the site. The site was very quiet, apart from the usual dawn chorus we all know and love, and the occasional baying of donkeys at the nearby donkey sanctuary. Something we have definitely never come across before.
The Four Seasons Pub and Restaurant in the neighbouring village serve great food – with HUGE portions and offer a welcome to all. As a first timer to the island I will certainly return again next year – but maybe earlier in the year, when more of the site facilities are open.

August 2005 Just returned from a week here, very Nice site, nothing too much trouble for the owners, very clean, lovely pool, shop and cafe on site but these only open part time. Situated in a very nice quiet area but within travelling distance to Ventnor. Only 1 slight downside and that is that some of the pitches are on a slope unless at the top or bottom of the field. this is a slight problem when in a tent. Overall a nice site and one I would return to again.

August 2005 Overall we had a great holiday here. Very nice pitches, some sloping but most on the flat. A very large football pitch for the kids to play on which kept our two entertained for numerous hours. The pool is great and the shop a little basic. A very good base for exploring the whole island. Unfortunately the only thing letting this site down is the toilet and shower blocks. They are very dated, no doors on shower cubicles only a flimsy shower curtain and nowhere to get changed before and after showering, you had to do this in the shower or in front of everyone. Personal washing and washing up facilities are very cramped and in need of refurbishment.
Apparently the owners have been trying to get planning permission and failing for several years, not sure whether this is genuine or an excuse as the same people go back year after year. However, I don't think we will be going back until the facilities are upgraded or renewed.

August 2003 Height of season, heatwave. Excellent site, good facilities in general.Good clean showers. Plenty of hot water at all times while we were there and considering the site was full and the temperatures incredible, this was no mean feat! Would recommend to anyone. Refreshing pool in walled suntrap area, pleasant bar and well stocked shop. Staff all extremely pleasant and helpful.
