I was massively looking forward to camping at Willowbank because I lived in Ainsdale between the age of 5 and 10 and was dying to share my memories there with my own daughter.
The first thing to say is you can't stay in a tent there anymore after 1st May. The staff there are unable to say why. I would suspect the plan is to increase revenue from caravans and motorhomes, or the very lucrative looking statics business. Just a guess though.
The site is beautiful and well run. The showers are clean and hot but only run for 20 seconds at a time.very very irritating having to press the button every 20 seconds! The cubicles could be bigger too, it was near impossible to get in and shower, dry and dress my 5 year old. The toilets are ample, and spotless. Handily there is also a washing machine and dryer, you have to buy tokens from reception to use them. It cost me £4.60 to wash and dry 1 load.
The huge downside to this site for me was the road noise. As has previously been mentioned, it was incessant. I checked my watch at 4am when there was still traffic rumbling by. I'm more used to listening to owls and sheep when I'm in my tent!
The play area was nice, the children with me where happy with it. It would have been better more central in the park though, rather than at reception. It was a fair way from the tent to let my 5 year old wander unsupervised which is a shame as she is very independent usually.
We spent a day on the beach at Ainsdale, and this is a very very serious warning now. Do NOT go to the water's edge when the tide is coming in. It comes in fast, it surrounds you very quickly, there is sinking sand, and people have died. We have a local fisherman hunting for worms to thank for our lives. And I'm not exaggerating.
There is no shop on site to speak of. You can buy drinks, ice creams and newspapers at reception. But Ainsdale village is lovely. There is a Spar, a lovely clean chippy a couple of doors down, a fab cafe, sweet shop, off licence, all the usual village shops. There were pubs nearby, but we didn't really use them.
Most of the staff at Willowbank are lovely and friendly and helpful, but there is one very abrupt lady. My advice is don't let her put you off going!

Just returned from a weeks stay at Willowbank would certainly agree with most of the other comments made about this site but just a few things to add.
Firstly we thought that the touring grass pitches were very close together so you were quite close to your neighbours. Regarding the noise yes the road was noisey with traffic coming up and down the very busy road which lasted most of the night. The RAF base which is next door wasnt a problem there was hardly any noise and what aircraft noise there was stopped early evening and it was mostly light aircraft.
The childrens play park could probably do with a few more things added to it but saying that it kept my children aged 8 and 4 occupied most of the week and they played ball games on the field so they were happy.
There is a spar and a chemist ten minutes walk away and endless shops/supermarkets in formby or southport both only a short drive away.
The site was very well maintained and the toilets and showers were spotless which probably as something to do with having to have a key which costs ten pounds returnable deposit when you arrive but if lost you lose you money so they are well looked after and not many children running about with them. The site could probably benefit from another dish washing sink because there is only one but its not a big problem.
The nearest beach is ainsdale which is just over a mile away and can be walked in about 30/40 minutes or 5 mins in the car.
All in all a good well maintained site and definitely worth another visit

Went to this site for our first trip out with a caravan as it is very close to home. Caravan is an old 'classic' but the staff / wardens couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. Cleanest and nicest toilets and showers I have seen anywhere. This is a lovely quiet site for those who want to get away from it all. No shop or pub, but both of those facilities could be found relatively close by. Just a quick drive to the beach. All in all a great site - even when the weather is not too good.

Really nice site, friendly staff, very clean toilet's and showers. Really quite noisy with sirens and road next to field. The RAF airbase was noisy as well. Tent pitches were nice and level. Had to drive to get to drive to get to nearest shop and to get any food.

Many will like this site, its very well run, clean and well maintained. On the downside its a bit 'fussy', e.g. they insist on calling you sir in every sentence, and try that hard that they are a bit tense and in my opinion could relax a bit. However this means that they take the loo's seriously too and they are very clean! The pitches are good, if a touch close and there is some road noise form some areas. Its probably not the best if you like to park the car and leave it for the weekend, there's no shop (to speak of), no pub nearby, so its a use the car and pay and display in Southport job.

We spent the first weekend of June here. The site was very busy when we arrived due to it being the end of the school holidays, we arrived about 7pm and the helpful warden took us to our pitch and showed us where everything was. The site is very clean, the shower block modern and clean with water and waste facilities well laid out. We had no children with us but the many children that were there seemed to enjoy playing in the woods and play area. The site is very near the A565 but we were not disturbed by the traffic noise, we did notice the police helicopter coming and going a couple of times on Friday night. A very enjoyable weekend (probably because my teenage son stayed at home) and I will definitely go back.

Very friendly wardens, toilets spotless although O/H said sinks were too small to get his shovel like hands in. Noisy road at the rear (sirens in the night). Enough space between pitches. Kids liked the woods behind us. No shops around no pub grub within walking distance. Close to southport. Oh and quite a lot of noise from the airfield next door! Its not really as bad as this sounds it was quite relaxing weekend.

Just spent 2 nights at Willowbank. Woodland setting with hard standing & grass pitches. Was greeted by very friendly warden who showed us to our pitch. Toilets & showers are spotless. would benefit from a shop (even to get some milk). Very nice site would go again (but take plenty of milk next time :0))

Just returned from Willowbank and being complete Caravan newbies I just wanted to add a review.
The admin guy greeted us and directed us to our pitch and helped make sure we were all lever (very helpful!). There is a very small childrens park on site but it managed to keep my 8 year old entertained. Showers and toilets are kept immaculate. Like other reviews have said, it is quite close to a main road, however this really didnt bother us, but Friday and Saturday night was kareoke night at a near by pub. Lets just say its close enough to hear what song is being sung and occaisonaly the dj talking over. But apart from that, we enjoyed the site. A few mins from Ainsdale beach where you could sit for hours and 10 min drive into southport where you could spend a fortune lol. We would go back again.

Just spent a couple of nights at willowbank. we were happy there. The pitches are well spaced out. The toilets/showers were immaculate. The site is clean and tidy. Small play area for kids, lots of woodland for them to roam around. rabbits hop past your van in the morning. Nice site, well recommended. Will be going back next year.
