 This is a beautiful site that we find we just keep on going back to. It is exceptionally well run with strict rules regarding noise and dogs being kept on leads. They are very keen to make their rules known before allowing you onto the site but this is most definitely to their credit resulting in a very pleasant, clean and quiet environment in which to stay.
The facilities are good with numerous pot-washing areas (no need to queue for these), lovely clean, hot showers with electric points in the blocks for hair-drying. There is a small kitchen with a fridge which may be used (at your own risk) and a hot drinks machine (kids loved the hot chocolate before bed!).
The laundry room is well equipped and also nice and warm if you find yourself shivering beyond your control!
The shop has all the basic things that you may need if you find you've forgotten something (camping stoves, pots & pans, basic food, walking guides etc - even dog leads which came in handy -there's always something.) but you are not far out of Keswick with its busy shopping area if there is anything else you need.
The staff are very friendly and exceptionally helpful which is the topping on the cake.
There are stunning views from the site over Derwent Water and to the mountains beyond (Catbells, Maiden Moor etc) and after just a short, steady walk you will find yourself at the summit of Walla Crag with breathtaking views of the Derwent Valley.
I would recommend this site to anybody visiting the Keswick area and wouldn't hesitate to go back again time after time.

Stayed for three nights in late August 2008 with my wife and another couple who had their own tent.
This was the first time we have stayed at Castlerigg farm but not our first visit to Keswick.
The site is in a nice location and is about a fifteen minute walk into Keswick. There is a small pub just down the lane from the site which is very handy if you want to stay local and it is also dog friendly but it is very small.
The shower block on site was very clean but expect a bit of a wait if the site is full as there are only three cubicals and you will need 50pence pieces. There is a shop on site but is really only for the basics and you are better off going into Keswick for supplies.
There is also a cafe/restaurant at the front of the site which is a barn conversion and I would highly recommend the food here. We visited on two occations and were not disappointed, the food was excellent and very good value for money, you can also take your own wine for a cork charge of £1-00.
The only down side of our stay was that we thought the owners were a little bit too keen with the no-noise rule after 10-30. We were asked to keep the noise down around 10-45, when we were only whispering, in fact the sheep in the next field were making more noise.I am all for a quiet site and showing respect to your fellow campers but I did feel this was a little OTT.
A nice site and I would visit again.

This was our fourth stay at this site we like coming here. This site is good, no noise after 10.30 a good pub on the doorstep, it does food but its vegetarian. Keswick within 15 minutes walk with loads of shops including 2 supermarkets. The toilet block clean but very busy, when the camping field is full which is most of the time.
The site has its own water supply, we arrived and checked in as normal,and only when we went to full up the water barrel, saw the notice that all drinking water had to be boiled for at least one minute, no mention of this when checking in.
When we arrived the site had been closed for three days due to the rain, to those who had not booked, the caravan pitches are at the bottom of a sloping field, and where boggy to say the least. The breathable ground sheet only rule for caravans with awnings (a new addition to the list of rules this year) a bit unfair, as the previous caravanner had not adhered to this rule, not that it is enforced. After 1 day of rain we had a river of mud flowing through our awning which only got worse as the week went on , and no where to move to as this site has only 12 electric hook ups with all pitches that were not in use where in the same condition as the one we where on if not worse .
This is a great site but not after heavy prolonged rain.

Bit of a mixed visit to this campsite.
Firstly, the positives; it is well situated for Keswick being a short bus ride or a 30 minute walk through the woods. The facilities are plentiful, including the shop, laundry café etc. Although you do have to queue a lot to use most things. We found the café useful for cereal and toast but would agree with the other reviews that, although you get huge potions, the prices for the full breakfasts are a bit steep. The staff are mostly friendly and welcoming and the site is cheap for the facilities that you get, being less than £10 per night for two people without a car.
There is a very small pub (about 6 tables) a short walk down the road but we found it expensive and were not impressed with the food we had there; my lasagne was literally just a dish full of melted cheese and the chilli was absolutely tasteless. Eat in Keswick would be my advice, there are some lovely restaurants there including a really good Indian next to the main car park that does a 'happy hour' deal between 5 and 6.30pm where you can get a 3 course meal for £9.95!
Unfortunately, there were, for us, some negatives to the site. We think that the site is just too overcrowded and this results in people camping right on top of one another. I appreciate that they are a very popular site and they want to accommodate people but there needs to be some limit and come a time when enough is enough. When we arrived, we were told we could camp where we liked, which we did, but within an hour we were told we had to move our tent as we were camped in the motor home section. There were no signs and although the warden kindly offered to help us move our tent the next morning we still had to waste our time re-pitching our tent through no fault of our own. Given it is such a popular site, it would be a good idea if they at least laid out some rows or something to make the best use of the space.
More importantly, we chose the site because of its well-known 10.30pm noise curfew, which suits us as we prefer quiet nights when camping, and its policy of not taking large groups. Unfortunately, we did not find these rules were that strictly enforced and when they were it was disproportionate. A family next to us were told to be quiet at 10.40pm one evening when they were barely whispering and yet later, a large group who had been allowed onto the site came back from the pub at 11.40pm, and spent the next 2 hours laughing and talking despite being asked by other campers to be quiet and nothing was done. I think the site planned to remove them the following day but by then the damage was done. Surely if you are going to have such strict noise limits you need to have methods of enforcing them at all hours, not just in the half-hour following 10.30pm.
This site is probably great for most people, it just depends what you want from your camping.

We stayed here for 10 nights in July/Aug. It was the start of the school holidays so the site was very busy. We managed to get a pitch but it was a bit of a walk from the toilet/shower block. They could do with extra facilities especially as there are only 3 showers in both the ladies and gents and about 5 toilets which isn't really enough during the peak season and most of the time we had to queue. You need a 50p, (which is a bit pricy) to use the shower and that gives you 3.5 mins which surprisingly is long enough to wash your hair.
The shop is open from 8am and stocks basic things although we only ever brought milk. There is a supermarket (Booths) and a co-op in Keswick.
You can freeze your ice packs for 20p each during the reception opening hours, which is quite a lot, but all the money goes to the air ambulance.
The location is nice and has lovely views. Although in hindsight we would have stayed a bit further south as lots of the things we wanted to do were around Ambleside. Keswick is a nice town and has plenty of pubs and restaurants. It also has lots of outdoor clothing stores so it's a good place to get yourself equipped, as is Ambleside.
We chose this campsite mainly because of the no noise after 10.30 rule. It was pretty much adhered to on a couple of occasions there was a bit of noise from neighbouring tents after this time but it didn’t go on much past 11. It would have been better if the pitches were marked out rather than finding your own space. We found people didn’t always consider others when pitching up especially the big family group who were a bit too close for comfort.
Be aware that if you come back after 10pm the gate to the campsite will be locked so you will have to leave your car the other side of the gate. We went to the cinema in Ambleside one evening and got back at 10.20 (not exactly late) and couldn’t get back in so had to unload the car and walk back to our tent then collect it in the morning. The gate doesn’t open again until 8am, which was fine for us as we were never up and out that early.

We had previously stayed across the road at the Hall which was lovely.This time we decided to stay here.
As we had a small tent, we pitched under the trees by the hedge, it meant that we were sheltered from the wind, so felt very cosy.
The no noise rule is a very good idea as we've been bothered by very selfish campers late at night, in fact we fell foul of this at 10.40, but we didn't mind at all.This rule stretches till 8am which is even better as we got disturbed at 6.30 by some students packing their tents, they took their time as at 8am they were reprimanded
- Good!
We'll be returning, as we only live in the northeast.

Our first visit to this site (although we only live 30 mins drive away in Ambleside!) - We thought it was very well organised and ran. The staff are warm but firm and the 10.30pm no noise rule really appealed to us, it means you get some peace when all the kids go to sleep, we just talked quietly (very) and read our books which was lovely. We tried the Hayloft cafe on our last night and the food was outstanding - it's not really cafe food, more restaurant standard really - I had a lamb shank and the meat just melted off the bone - DH says try the Hayloft stack - it's delicious.
The washing up, laundry and shower facilities were all well organised and clean - everything is clearly laid out and neatly kept. We will probably go back here and meet up with some caravaning friends.

Stayed here for two night with my wife and litte boy. This is the first time we stayed at castlerigg. The site is clean and friendly but most of all is a quiet site and is very strict about the 10.30pm no noise rule which we found to are liking, with no group just families and couples. The site has great views of keswick and the lakes, when it was not rianing (it rain for the two days off and on, mostly on).
The toilets are very clean, shower's cost 50p for three and a half minutes and the hot water is very hot.There's a clean washing up area in the main block next to the shop. The shop is stocked with food and camping basics .But the site has no hookup for tents.
In keswick a trip around the lake by boat is a must and has great walks, shops and the best of all the pubs
An excellent site and will retun in august

Very well run site, plenty of space where we were there in at the start of July.
Did not eat in the Café as thought the prices were a bit too high to tempt us. Maybe add something like Cheese toasties to the menu.
Fantastic views from the campsite and also walked up Walla Crag and another great view.
Water is VERY hot in the pot wash room which is great to wash up with but would be dangerous for kids, not they do much washing up!
In Keswick there is a CO-OP supermarket which is ok but also a Booths Supermarket which is much better but you have to pay for parking which is refunded if you spend over £5 in the shop.
We will defiantly be going back, thanks to the No Noise after 10:30 policy.

Once again I stopped at this campsite for 5 nights and once again, I cannot fault the site or its facilities.If anything, it has improved with the addition of the barn conversion / restaurant although the only fault I have is the size of the breakfasts. I think they could include a lighter breakfast for those that can't eat enormous quantities in the morning.
Once again the facilities were faultless and spotless and the views from the site once again were tremendous.
I still think that this is the best site in the Lake District and I have stoppped at lots of different sites this year.
Thanks again to all the staff on the site and I will be back soon.
