A great site in lovely, wooded surroundings. The restaurant accepted dogs which was an added bonus too. There's also a really nice little walk around a lake which the dog enjoyed. The toilet/shower facilities are good and clean with music playing throughout the evening as well, so it they don't feel 'eerie' if your visiting them during the late/early hours! However, I do agree that the nearby road can be noisy and it even woke us up early on the Monday/Tuesday mornings. This can't be helped and it didn't spoil our stay, but thought it's worth the mention. I would recommend this site however.

We stayed at Hidden Valley campsite last week and found it to be a very pleasant site which is indeed within a hidden valley, wooded and attractive. The descriptions of it as peaceful are, however, not really accurate given that the site is right next to the A361, a busy road. Late at night there is not a great deal of traffic but at other times of the day it is busy and therefore noisy.
The facilities are excellent and the three showers, four loos and four basins (similar number and standard for men) were kept extremely clean at all times. Showers are free and not on those timed things so that was nice to see. Also, there is a hairdryer which is free to use. AND, most importantly, there are three hooks and two shelves in all the shower cubicles. Wonderful! The showers and loos are in a block which also contains the CDP and washing up sink as well as a separate disabled persons facility. The reception doubles as a shop, selling all the basics, and from where you can order a newspaper for the following day.
The site has the Lakeside restaurant and bar to hand, serving good food at reasonable prices. Excellent chips! We particularly liked the pool table in the lounge area - £1 per hour!
Apart from the road noise, there are just a couple of other 'negatives' to mention. Our pitch and its adjacent bit of grass was littered with dogends. Disgusting! Have these people never heard of ashtrays?! Our friends' pitch was likewise afflicted along with a couple of left behind awning pegs which could possibly damage tyres if not discovered. The grass is cut regularly and is neat and tidy as is the rest of the site, but the dogends really were unpleasant.
The only other 'negative' is regarding the security gate. While it's good to have that security it would be nice to know that it is locked for the night from (I think) 10pm. We returned at 10. 30 precisely from a meal out in Ilfracombe on the Saturday night to find our way back in was barred. Luckily my friend had the good sense to check the exit keypad - the barrier opened for that otherwise they and their camper van would have had to spend the night in the car park area sans hookup. 10 out of 10 for making sure there are no noisy cars roaring around the site late at night but really, 10pm? A little early, I'd have thought, especially as we had no warning. A little sign on the barrier stating locking up times would be very helpful. It's been a long time since I felt like a naughty schoolgirl.
All in all, this is a good site with smashing facilities, and has some excellent deals - we stayed on one of the small pitches with EHU and fresh water shared between two pitches, for the princely sum of £79 for 7 nights. Can't be bad. I have given only 4 out of 10 for location purely because of proximity to that road but from its geographical location it is well-placed for lots of what makes North Devon so special.

Wonderful site staffed by very helpful and enthusiastic people. Little on the tight side for the pitch but we are at the maximum size for this site (9m x 2. 55m x 3. 6m high) and tow a trailer. They even trimmed the trees for us when we left! Woodland trails are wonderful, pretty stream, dog loved every minute, nice play area for the kids, loo blocks very clean. Restaurant serves good food at reasonable prices. Excellent location. All in all a top site with well deserved awards.

Stayed for just under two weeks, the family that run the site are friendly and helpful but also leave you alone to enjoy your holiday. I found Hidden Valley a very pretty and spacious site. I pitched on one of the fully serviced touring pitches which has the river running directly behind it. There is a woodland trail which my dog loved and because it was quiet I could let her have a good run off the lead. The site is in a great location to explore locally with a good supermarket nearby to stock up. The only negative point I can make is that the shower room was very cold, I would have liked a bit more heating in the colder months. Lovely hot showers and clean facilities but very cold to get changed in. I will definitely visit again if I go back to North Devon.

Just returned from a 7 night stay at this site. We had a fully serviced pitch backing on to a little stream, near to the play park.
The Bad points.
Had to put the caravan on the awning side of the pitch, to reach the service pillar, as this is situated in the middle of the grass, between caravans, as it services two pitches.
The good points.
Nice size play park, which our two loved.
Clean toilet block with plenty of hot water
Nice walks and stream.
Well stocked shop.
Easy access to site.
A lovely site, would return, maybe in season when more is open.

Just had 5 glorious days here and found it idyllic. Such a beautiful setting, lovely trees and gardens and the small river. Kids aged 10 and six had great times playing in the stream and play parks. Noisy road at times, but soon got used to it. Huge premier pitch, level and well maintained. Some of the others looked tiny however. Did not try the restaurant, but used shop for essentials. Road is terrible down to our field, but we managed. Annoying that we had to leave the second car in the car park, which was all the way at reception. Facilities kept very clean apart from inevitable grass and we had great weather so no mud. Pitches mowed when vacated. Staff friendly but too far to walk to ask for help. Shower terrible, boiling hot then freezing cold! I liked the sinks in some of the cubicles. Washing up was a bore as you had to lean on the taps while they slowly filled the sinks, but we were not in any hurry, luckily. Good recycling. Fabulous beaches nearby, we have been to this area many times and love it. Would definitely visit again.

After the long hard winter we could see that the owners were starting to tidy up the site. The owners were very welcoming. The toilet/shower blocks were well kept clean and tidy and warm. It was lovely to wake up to the sound of the birds and watch the resident duck wandering the site. We would recommend the site and would go back again in the future. There are plenty of thing to do in the local area especially if you like cycling along the Otter Trail.

Having read all of their literature we were so looking forward to our spring break but were sadly disappointed. We were rushed through reception and had to ask for information, no explicit directions were given to our pitch. The roads are in quite a bad state of repair with potholes, so much so I tripped over one of the holes and damaged my knee quite badly. The shower block was ok, with 3 shower cubicles and free hairdryer in the ladies however we did discover that this one block served all three levels. Overall it was an okay break, does not deserve a 5* rating and definitely needs some money spending on it.

We joined family here for New Year celebrations. The site was jointly chosen on account of the reviews left by others, and because we have stayed on 5* sites before, so we felt assured of a comfortable stay.
The access on and off the main road is very good.
On arrival, we were rushed through, we don't know why, we were the only ones on reception. Felt as if we were interrupting. No advice was given on the surrounding area, and we were not asked if there was anything we needed. We were on Otters Creak pitches.
No one came to see if we had pitched ok!
The roads on site are not the smoothest.
We had asked for hardstanding, it was, but the definition between hard and grass is being eroded and not maintained. The pitch was small and parking of our relatively small car was not easy. The car had to be parked about face to avoid stepping on the mud. Pitches are reasonably level. The power point was not in great condition (but yes it works), one of the lids that hold the plug in was broken, and they were sloppy fits. The aerial box was falling apart (but worked), these had obviously been like this for years. To get our water or empty the grey waste involved manoeuvring in mud, and like some other sites, are not aqua roll friendly. Why there aren't a couple of slabs down is beyond us (we have photo). Our pitch was close to the main road, but the traffic noise wasn't too bad and did not bother us.
The toilet block is basic, and has had a budget face lift, not 5* standard (I am in the building trade). They were not warm and inviting, but were adequate and clean with plenty of hot water.
Rubbish and waste disposal facilities, rubbish is well sorted for recycling. The elsan point is a toilet, which makes disposal easy, but the environment it is set in leaves a little to be desired.
The site seems to be maintained with minimal outlay.
We had a walk around the site, which we could see will look lovely in the spring and summer.
We walked to The Crown Inn where we had a really good meal, we would highly recommend a visit, taxi back £5! Ilfracombe is looking tired these days compared to our last visit being about 4 years ago when we had our caravan stored at Stowford.
Would we come back, no. Why, well 5* to us is something a little more than average, we have had very different experiences of 5* sites. We would question 'Visit England's' rating system.
Would we recommend this site? Not if you want 5*.
The cynics out there may think we are being picky, well, we didn't want to be constantly avoiding mud and chose a site that suggested it was adequately suited to winter camping. The pitches we were given, weren't, yet there were other pitches available (discovered on our walk about) which were.
We did not complain to the wardens themselves during our visit, as we felt after our less than warm welcome, any observations would have fallen on deaf ears.

Helloooo, we are from New Zealand and just finished travelling around England and Wales (over 2 months). This site is a good little spot, nice playground, river running through the site. Great value. The bathroom facilities were good, however quite a walk from the pitches. Pitch got muddy with the rain but that's was to be expected camping in winter. Had free running showers which is always a bonus. Lots of wildlife around this site.
