I've been going to Hidden Valley for years. But this weekend I had my best stay yet.

The sun was out all weekend it is a real sun trap.

They had an Easter egg hunt on Sunday which the kids loved! It explored the woods and the other part of the site that I hadnt really looked at before.

The shower block in Kingfisher Meadow is still a bit dated, but apparently they are going to refurbish that before next year.

Everyone was really friendly and the place looks the best it has done for years. And the shop now looks like a proper campsite shop. The new owners and their staff have really pulled out all the stops.

We have been driving past this site for years when visiting family close by. We visited for our 1st camping trip a few weeks ago and booked in for 4 nights on a premium pitch.

Although the pitch was nice and big, we both thought the £43 a night to be expensive (this was the high season rate).

Although the site is very well kept and clean, the noise from the road spoilt the over all experience. The couple who are currently looking after the campsite and live in the caravan are extremely friendly and very helpful.

Having visited the website the site did not live up to my expectations.

Our pitch was very muddy and by the time we had erected our tent we were filthy. I know that they can’t help the weather but other sites put bark down and roll it when it is very muddy The shower block in Kingfisher Meadow is clean but basic, cold and draughty certainly not what I would expect from a ‘campsite of the year’.

No shelf in the shower area and the floor got so wet my flip-flops floated out of the cubicle! However the shower itself was excellent. I checked the other shower block where the hardstandings for caravans were, they were much better if a little dated, at least they were warm. Why should the people in tents have to put up with inferior facilities?

The site is beatifully landscaped and there are lots of bird feeders outside the reception/coffee shop.

On our second morning I wandered up to the shop to buy milk. The fridge was completely empty, no milk or butter, bacon etc and when I asked if they had any milk a man said ‘yes it’s coming, it should have been here yesterday’ but he could not say when it would arrive. I know it was September but they are open all year and there were quite a few people staying and I feel that the least they can do is make sure they have something as basic as milk available.

We seemed to be the only people without a dog, the site is very dog friendly.

On a more cheerful note I can recommend the Ebrington Arms at Knowle for good food and friendly staff. Enjoyed a cream tea at the farmhouse in the lovely village of Morthoe.

We will not be returning as there are better sites in the area.

We have just come back from a lovely 6 night stay at this campsite. I spent a long time researching which site to book and then several fretful weeks on the run up hoping it was the right choice. Which it was. My husband and I have camped many times but never with a one year old and wanted it to be successful. So hopefully this review will help any campers researching a site for their first camp with a toddler.

In my opinion, no one site will be the right type of site for everyone on here so it helps to have some context. As a couple, my husband and I liked fields with basic but clean amenities (a nice hot shower helps), camp fires and unmarked pitches. However, on our first camping trip with a toddler we thought some electric, allocated pitch (large for minimal disruption to other campers with night wakings), washing machines, family sized shower rooms and a bath would be beneficial. And they were. We didn't want a clubhouse or holiday park feel and we didn't get that, which was great. We were on pitch 34 in Kingfisher Meadow (super pitch size). Fab as it was far enough away from the road but close enough to the toilets.

All pitches are level. We didn't have any problems with road noise and didn't need ear plugs (we are used to some road noise though and are suffering with year long sleep deprivation so could possibly sleep through a tornado.) Its worth noting that the pitches nearer the road side are also alongside the stream and I guess you'd have more noise there. We walked to the top campsite for a bath and noticed that the road is noisier for the hard standing pitches near the road.

I can't really comment on Hidden Valley for motor homes as we only have a tent but I preferred Kingfisher Meadow in terms of space and ambience. The showers are heated in the top block and not in Kingfisher meadow if that helps. I noticed that some tents had been allocated hard standing pitches which resulted in some not so happy campers so check which pitch you are allocated before you go - there is a map on their website which you can print off (not to scale but if you look at google satellite view you can get a better feel for how big the site is).

The shower blocks and toilets were clean and there was free running hot water. The bath was a pound for a token which easily filled the bath. The washing machines and dryers are new and efficient - £3 for washing machine and £2 for tumble dryer. All the pitches have electric, so we took a mini fridge, and water tap so we didn't need to carry water long distances. The shop is basic (and expensive) but I was happy to find that it sold oatmilk and the staff were really helpful. I didn't use the spa (which is housed in the reception area - see http://www.Relaxtherapysuite.Com/ for treatments).

The coffee house looked nice and there were tables overlooking the lake. There are two playgrounds (one at each end) which are very natural and look great for older children (nothing for Under 5s) and there is a lovely woodland walk along the stream. You can paddle in the stream or fish for tiddlers - great fun for kids and no doubt will make long lasting childhood memories.

The road is handy for access to beaches - Woolacoombe Bay is gorgeous and busy (£6 for the carpark - correct cash only). Saunton Sands is bit wilder (fantastic sand dunes) and less commercial with one shop (£4 for car park). We had a fab day playing in the sand and waves at the former and surfing at the latter. You can also hire beach huts at Saunton.

Braunton is a lovely little village to wander around and nose in the shops. We hired bikes from Otter Cycle hire and cycled to Flemming cafe along the estuary using the Tarka Trail.

There are loads of attractions in the area - we went to The BIG Sheep which was fantastic. We also had a picnic outside Watermouth Castle and walked along the headland - gorgeous!

We'll probably go back when our daughter is older and can play safely in the playgrounds and stream.

This site was recommended by friends.

The pitch we had was a premium one which cost £40 a night - total cost of our short break was £195. We thought it was very over priced, because all you get is an extra large pitch! Shower facilities were clean and free, also within the shower block are the toilets which have a sink and small shelf. These were cleaned throughout the day. There are also 2 or 3 family shower rooms too. The washing up area in undercover. It had been raining for a good few weeks before we arrived and parts of the site were muddy, but where we were pitched (K15 & K16) were ok. The top part of the camping field was so muddy, people were covered in mud!

It is very safe for children to cycle or go off and play, without you having to watch them, our 7 yr old son liked the play area too. The shop is away from where we were camped, about a 10 min stroll. When we were there the shop wasn't well stocked, no milk, bread and other shelves were empty. Know it was bank hol, but the site was only half full.

There is a warden actually on the camping field who did the evening round at 10pm so anyone making too much noise swiftly shut up!

A good place to eat out was The Ebrington Arms a few minutes drive away. Good reasonably priced food, would recommend. On our last day we ate at Squires (Braunton), we had driven past it on several occasions and always had a queue of people waiting outside. So we joined the queue and wasn't disappointed, fish and chips were absolutely delicious! Highly recommended! We went to Putborough Sands and was £6.50 to park. There is a lovely little cafe and shop too. Lovely beach, where dogs are not permitted, obviously some dog owners cannot read, as there were loads of dogs! I'm a dog owner just in case you think I'm a dog hater!

Almost forgot, the road that runs along side the campsite, its the main A461 that connects Illfracombe and Barnstaple. It's quite noisy and spoils what could be a more peaceful campsite.

We've stayed at this site for two years running now and love it.

The pitches are massive (although you do pay a premium for the privilege), the toilets are clean and well equipped. The showers are excellent with really good spacious family showers.

The site changed hands this year, and the new owners could not do enough for us. Really lovely people. They will probably remember me for borrowing their computer (thanks)

Great location, only 10 min drive to beaches at Croyd and Woolacombe, plus the facilities around Ilfracombe and Barnstaple.

If you've got kids, the Big sheep is a must, and Watermouth Castle we found to be surprisingly good.

The only negative is the lower field play area, not good for younger kids.

We stayed at this site for a short weekend and plan on going back for a longer summer holiday. We were on 'Kingfisher Meadow' which had lovely level pitches. We were on the road side which after reading reviews I was a little worried about, but unnecessarily, it didn't bother me at all. I was woken up by the sounds of the bubbling stream, birdsong and sheep baaing. I even heard a pig! Very different to our usual camping experiences!

It is a glorious location and I didn't want to leave. The weather was warm so it was lovely for the children to cool off and play in the forest. Beautiful grounds, it's no surprise it has won awards. Friendly and welcoming, it has a family feel about it.

We had a fantastic day on the beach, Saunton Sands, lovely as there is only one shop and cafe, not commercial, and easy to access. The children are counting the days until we go back! I'm planning on surfing lessons and hiring a beach hut and maybe visiting an art gallery or two next time. There's definitely a lot to do in the area so here's hoping for lots more sunshine!

Just returned from Hidden Valley, had a wonderful few days in the area, great weather and beaches, especially Saunton Sands for surfing.

Hidden Valley is the most expensive site we have ever stayed on and we did expect something special. The best pitch we have ever had and the site is beautifully kept with lovely woodland walks and a lake, everything is very clean and convenient. It is really good to have super hot showers with free flowing water.

However this is marred by the noisy road which never ceased. We also found the shop, information and coffee shop disappointing, it was all very unappetising.

We loved Ilfracombe there was such a lot to see, the beach at Woolacombe is spotless and terrific for families.

We spent a very pleasant morning at Arlington Court National Trust House.

Hidden Valley is wonderful, although quite pricey. We booked for May 2010 in Nov 2009, and paid a deposit and it was up to us to remember to pay the full amount 6 weeks or so beforehand. Also, there was a 5 night minimum stay at this time.

The location really is a 'hidden valley' which has good and bad points. The good points is that you feel very much so in the country, but the bad points are that some pitches do not get sun for very long. Braunton is close by, for shopping and pubs etc, but not walkable.

We graded up to a super sized serviced pitch, which was our first experience of this, which was worth the extra cost.

Woolacombe is a close destination for a seaside resort.

The toilet block was clean and the showers hot, so no complaints here.

One, what I would call, bad point, is that there seems to be quite a lot of caravans on pitches on a continuous basis. This is OK, but I did note that some were quite personalised, with tubs of plants, washing lines, nightlights, etc.

The site seemed quite deserted when we arrived, but as the Bank Holiday weekend approached, more and more caravans were taken out of storage for use.

Saying all the above, I would go back, and would recommend this site for a quiet relaxing break.

I am not sure where to start! We loved this site. We went just after Easter and had the most fantastic weather of the Easter holidays. We booked a premier pitch and found the site to be spacious, beautiful, clean and tidy.

Wardens all very helpful and friendly. It was so quiet, we could not understand why. We had two small children with us and they spent the whole time in the play park, they loved it.

Nearby beaches are fantastic, esp, Woolacombe. Would not recommend The Milky Way personally, we found it very expensive and not very exciting. Instow is great too.

North Devon is a real treasure, and we only come from South Devon ourselves. We have not been to many sites as we are new to this game, but we think Hidden valley will be hard to beat.
