Although set in beautiful surroundings we felt this campsite was lacking in a number of departments for the price we paid.

1. The toilet and shower blocks were not very clean or fresh. They were full of creepy crawlies and had no soap. The mens were especially bad with mould in the corners of the cubicles and the placement of urinals opposite the showers meant my husband was sometimes standing in pee after a shower.

2. The campsite was crowded. Not just a little, the next tent to ours was less than six feet away.

3. The 'quiet times' were not adhered to and noisy neighbours did get a telling off from me on more than one occasion at 6am.

4. The larger pub to the left of the campsite left a lot to be desired, although the pub to the right was ok, it was very crowded and we couldn't find a seat. I know this is not the campsites fault, but did rather spoil our trip.

This was my second visit to this very pretty and very peaceful campsite, set in heart of the Edale valley - a perfect location for peak walking. This is a really lovely spot to camp, but there are a few pros and cons to be aware of with this site:

Pros:

• Beautiful, quiet, near the water

• No mobile phone reception on any network - I count this as a huge plus - others may differ

• Very friendly & helpful staff

• No vehicle access to the site - another big plus point for me. Yes, you have to carry your stuff to the field, but this isn't a problem for most campers and the site remains, blissfully, car-free.

Cons:

• No credit/debit cards. When camping fees can easily be over £100, it's really not acceptable to expect people to pay cash. Come on Fieldhead - don't be so stingy - get a credit card machine like everyone else!

• Car parking is expensive and charged on top of your camping fees.

• The showers / toilet block. Mentioned in a number of reviews here - they're not particularly clean or well-maintained and there's no soap in the toilets. But most disappointingly, even though you have to pay for the showers, you can only buy a maximum of six minutes.

Although the location is gorgeous, neither of the local pubs are great. They both serve a reasonable pint but the food is very average, yet quite expensive. If you're traveling light relying on a local pub for your main meal, I'd look elsewhere. Obviously this isn't the fault of the campsite, but worth bearing in mind for some campers.

This is a nice campsite in a beautiful part of the country, with some useful amenities nearby. The small hamlet has 2 pubs (although to be fair, neither are particularly great, drinks are ok and average priced but food is less then great! Nevertheless a real village atmosphere with it being a good place to meet people!). There's also a cafe which is nice for a cup of tea or a bit of cake, or a panini (that was yummy!); it also happens to have wifi which is useful for those wishing these facilities. Finally there is another cafe (which I've not yet been to) and a small village shop, which shows a small amount of every day essentials.

The campsite isn't all that great, but unfortunately it is one of a few in the area. The parking is a nightmare and regularly you need to block each other in, which is a real nuisance. Despite this you still need to pay extra for a car and not only on the day, but this needs to be requested when booking. Toilets and showers are not always clean; I ended up cleaning the gents one time as it was driving me mad. The showers also charge and there is a maximum time - remember your 20p's!

The campsite does get busy so prepare for sharing a field and reserving well in advance. There are some fields at the bottom which are somewhat boggy and there are midges from the river! This isn't so good if you have a lot of kit to transport. There are also issues with larger tents, which sometimes the campsite doesn't like.

I wish I'd read the last review before I visited this site.

To start with the positive's it's a nice little site in a good location with a stream for the kids to play in. Edale is a lovely little village in a beautiful area.

Here come the negatives. The toilet and shower block were not clean, there was no soap or hand dryers hence all the toilet paper was used to dry hands and it ran out regularly. Some soap and a hand dryer would make life a little easier. Also there was nowhere to put your clothes when having a shower.

The car park is also very small and the owners get people so crammed in that you can hardly get your stuff out of the car. It can then be some distance to carry your stuff if you can't get a pitch near the car park.

Finally, we were told we couldn't bring our larger tent as the site was small so we borrowed a smaller one, as did our friends. I was shocked to find some very large tents there when I arrived. As we could only sleep in our tents and had no living space we asked if we could put a small gazebo up in between our tents.

The answer was yes but we'd have to pay for another pitch as they were a small site and were very busy. There was loads of space and we didn't take up any more room than some of the 4 person large family tents and there were 9 of us.

For what we paid we didn't have very good value for money.

Just returned from a 3 day trip to Edale.

The campsite itself is nice and quiet, (apart from the trains running almost 24 hours) in a good location and lots of areas for your tent, not one large field.

Facilities are not what you would expect after reading their website!

Toilet block was dirty and smelly with poor lighting. No soap provided or hand driers. Most mornings the toilet paper had run out in all the cubicles. Showers cost 20p for 2 minutes with a maximum of 6 minutes, 3x 20p’s. After this ran out the water stopped, not even any cold, so be quick if you want to wash all the soap off!

The site charge extra to park and the car park is not large enough. You also have to carry everything to your pitch as the car park is at the entrance. Also you pay extra per night for dogs.

All that aside, we still had a good time and the 2 local pubs are both good with friendly staff.

Love this campsite. Small, basic and friendly.

Take 20ps for showers, always clean.

Can be midgey camping by the stream.

Have to carry everything from car to your pitch, so pack things in bags/boxes to reduce the trips back and forth!

Book ahead, very popular site.

A good base for exploring the peaks, with plenty of easy walks for families with young children.

Two good pubs in walking distance, and a small village store for basics.

Just back from 3 day relaxing stay at Fieldhead for my first proper camping trip as a single mum using public transport. Very easy to get to by train and only 5 mins walk from the station. Booked in straight away by very helpful Samantha who advised on which field is best. It cost £20 for 2 nights for 1 adult and 1 child.

Used the showers once which were hot but didn't think 6 mins was enough to wash hair. There are no plug sockets to dry hair with either also no hand dryers or paper towels were available so had to drip dry hands every time we used the toilet.

The majority of campers used bbqs even though it states on reciept that they are not allowed but they were not asked to put them out.

There are no play facilities for children although the Moorland Centre (Visitor Centre) and the stream kept a 13 year old entertained in between walks.

It is a very good location for walking and would go back again. Had to try out both pubs which are very close by and just what you need after 8 mile walk!

It took me several weeks to manage to book this campsite, having left messages that were not returned, and it is a good job that I persisted as the site was fully booked for people with cars - the car park limits the number of campers with cars (but there is lots of space for backpackers which is good for D of E groups).

We didn't bother with a shower as the instructions made it all too complicated.

The Nags head pub is the better of the 2 pubs in Edale, and was good for a relaxing drink after a hard day!

I have just returned from trip to this site and will provide a list of pros and cons:

-£15 per tent and car

-Great location

-Unheated toilet/shower facilities which had no soap or hand driers for washing hands after using the bathroom

-Showers dirty so did not pay 20p (per 3 mins)

-Toilets were dark and had no loo paper this morning

-The field I was in was quiet, however adjoining fields had groups of Duke of E/Scouts etc that were quite noisy

-The warden and the check in lady both incredibly friendly and helpful

- No electric hook up

- If I had taken my 10 year old there would be nothing for her to do on-site (but then again chilling is the plan sometimes)!

We had taken a portable/disposable BBQ for supper but were not allowed to use according to site rules. So we went to The Ramblers Inn - good food, great views and friendly service (although expensive in comparison to other pubs). I'm not keen on The Nags Head - v claustrophobic.

In the morning I explored locations for breakfast - but no local cafe and neither pub provided breakfast which is something I've been lucky with in the Lake District.

Overall, great location and friendly service. If you want to avoid large groups of teenagers and demand heated, decent shower/loo facilities this is not for you (or me again).

A quick 1 night stayover for me. Flat pitches and close to 2 pubs. The Nags Head is better by a mile - out the drive and turn right. Prices a little steep for the facilities but has the benefit that if you are tied into Edale for running/walking etc .

Showers are picky in that if you add cash to them whilst it is counting down it's doesn't add credit and if you use them just prior to the 'booster' being turned on (2-5pm) expect luke war at best.
