I had to find somewhere where my girlfriend (who's never been camping at all) wouldn't be put off camping forever by, and what a find this place is!
Perhaps influenced by the gorgeous weather, this campsite is pretty darned good. I've stayed at others more expensive and got a lot less value for money.
If you haven't booked in in plenty of time, then you might not be able to park your car on site and have to park in the railway station car park. However, it's literally 2/3 mins walk away and I guess if you're looking at staying here, it's because you're going to be doing some walking anyway.
Cons first
If you've been camping before and know roughly what to expect, no cons at all.
If you want somewhere to try as your first attempt at camping, try this place.
The showers in the ladies are a little strange to get running, so read the instructions.
Other than that, nothing to worry about.
Pros
Happy, smiley face on arrival.
Stunning views in every direction.
Small enough to be nice and friendly, but not big enough to become tacky and overrun.
Great value for money (£20 for 2 adults for 2 nights).
As cars aren't allowed to be parked next to tents, it's nice and peaceful (there is a small number of spaces available on site, but you need to book in advance).
Superb location for setting out on walks in most directions.
Showers work and are hot.
The toilet and shower areas are clean and tidy.
Good little Post Office/General Store nearby.
This is no reflection on the campsite at all, but the only note to first timers to Edale in general are the pubs. You may need to re-mortgage your house just to raise enough money for a round or two! Whilst they're nice pubs, they're very expensive and akin to London bar prices! Solution, take your own food and drink.
All in all, well worth staying here. I'll definitely be doing so again.

Brilliant campsite, welcoming staff when we arrived who allowed us a lovely pitch next to the stream since we had backpacked from London.
The location is second to none and although there isn't much in Edale, the Nag's Head pub provided us with somewhere warm to sit in the evening instead of freezing in our tent.
It is a great base for walks in every direction through the Peak District and really is perfect if you're seeking a getaway from the bustle of a big city as we were. Would definitely visit again!

I stayed with a friend for one night. The toilet blocks are decent, with clean lavatories and basins. As the temperature outside never got as high as zero I didn't try the showers! A short walk to the Nag's Head (try the 1577 beer); the fact that you can't park by your tent was a bonus for me.
There were three fields open, plus a closed field by the beck. My field has a Scout group in it, but they were pretty quiet and very well behaved. Our pitch looked over the valley and was flat and dry.
We paid £11.50 for two tents, which was decent value. The 4 inches of snow when I opened my tent on the Sunday morning just made me enjoy the trip even more!

We stopped over two nights, 11th and 12th September. Overall a great location and lovely site however…
Pro’s
• Superb location, almost idyllic
• Walking options are second to very little, again brilliant location.
• Within easy walking distance of two pubs’s both servicing great food. The one nearest is quite expensive but the food is excellent. The Pub in the village is a little cheaper but much livelier and similar for food.
Con’s
• Hot Water All Day, yeah right, at 8am perhaps but after 9:30 its ice cold all day and no one to be seen for any help except a walkie talkie on the office door which doesn’t actually get hold of anyone!
• No one around in case of issues, didn’t see anyone that appeared to be in ‘control’ except when I paid at the start
Overall a lovely site, great break, but the ice cold showers will put me off stopping again. Perhaps I'm not a hardened camper but all I ask for is a hot shower seeing as I'm paying £25 for two nights in a field? Not too much I think?

The sites facilities, toilet block more than adequate but lacks basic shop or area for kids to play. Level pitches and well laid out.
Visitor centre on site and pub 5 mins away.
Excellent location and scenery for the Peak District

Edale is beautiful, the campsite had a couple of issues though but not insurmountable. You can't take your vehicle onto the site and if you're there for more than 3 nights the to-ing and fro-ing can be a bit tedious.
After paying for your pitch, the number of people in the party and your car parking, having to pay for your showers is galling, especially when the water isn't hot all day.
I was there when the 'obnoxious' group were there (obnoxious according to 'internetowl'). This was a group of 10 people with 2 children, how a group this large can stay silent as mice is beyond me and they were always quiet after 10pm. Also, there are 4 distinctly separate areas for camping within the site so internetowl could have upped sticks and moved.
All in all, a pleasant enough stay. Pubs fine, food fine-ish, portion sizes huge at the Nags Head and you must try a pint of the 1577.

The site is near to 2 pubs which both sell good food and ales, but not close enough to be disturbed by them. The train station is pretty close, but again, we were not disturbed by it.
Not parking next to your tent was not a big issue, however you do have to pay for parking on top of your fee and need to prebook a space.
Loos and showers were pretty clean. No hand soap but plenty of loo roll. NO POWER POINTS in the loo block so leave your straighteners at home ladies. Showers cost 20p for 2 mins. If you need to wash your hair, go armed with at least 60p! I did begrudge paying for a shower on top of the pitch AND parking fees, especially when they were not always hot. Best to ask reception for hot water times.
The site was a bit strict about fires, no disposable BBQs, quiet times etc etc.
The site is surrounded by loads of walks from gentle strolls to pretty tough ones. You can work as hard (or not!) as you like.
Close by is a cafe and post office that has a cash machine.
All in all we enjoyed our stay here

As our first visit to the Peak District this site has to score very high on location. As previously mentioned make sure you book a place in the car park which is remote from your pitch. I got the sense that this campsite is geared up for walkers who stay a couple of nights, not a family for a week. There are no accessible washing machines, though the owners will wash clothing for you if you ask apparently.
My main grumble about the site comes in form of the Showers which are only a couple of feet from the urinals causing me two concerns. Firstly, the floors were usually wet (probably due to the weather which was not remotely as inclement as it might have been) and I certainly was not happy about putting my feet on the floor. Secondly, their is nothing as off putting as the smell of freshly expelled Urine when you are trying to shower yourself and a child. That said the showers were warm enough and of adequate pressure.
There is a Morrisons in Chapel-le-Frith which is cheaper than the Spar in Hope Etc. And probably the nearest Supermarket. Walk are on your doorstep and Bakewell/Chatsworth House about 3/4 hour away.
A nice worthwhile trip is from Castleton upto Treak Cliff Cavern where a 45 min guided tour is £22 for a family of four (you can take your dog in too) then follow the footpath (which is just above the TKC building) away from Winnats Pass as it gently rises up and around the hill. As you reach the top you find youself overlooking the Blue John Cavern. Go down and follow its access road up to the main road turning right. This road was closed in 1979 due to landslips destroying it. The remaining road is stable but the evidence of the destruction is impressive. Follow the road down to Odins Mine, turn off the road to the Crushing Circle. Beyond this cross the stream and follow the footpaths (across several stiles) back to the road across farm fields. Approx 2 miles with enough accent to see some spectacular views of the area, but gentle enough for a young child.

We've just been to this site. Got to say it was better than we expected except for the showers being cold - and the sheep (why must they get up at 3am). Edale not bad, two pubs - food good at Nags Head - huge portions for the money. The Cafe does a great breakfast too. Only downside was as its popular it gets very busy and some of my fellow campers I'm afraid to say are quite obnoxious. One bloke complained he couldn't get the 4 wheel drive on the grass and had to carry stuff from the adjacent car park to the pitch. Would visit again.

This is not the first time that I have borrowed Oscar’s phrase, but I came away whelmed by Fieldhead Campsite and so I’ve taken a few days before starting this review to give myself a sense of perspective. Maybe my expectations were unreasonably elevated from all the upbeat reviews.
There are many positive aspects to Fieldhead Campsite. It’s scenically located in Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District with a choice of six small fields (one reserved for backpackers) which, together, make up the campsite. The fields each have different views and characteristics; two of the top fields have the greater perspective over the valley and all three top fields have the advantage of being nearer the car park if you are concerned about having to lug your stuff from the car to your pitch; the fields by the river are more secluded. (For the record I prefer campsites where you do not park your car by your tent.)
After a warm welcome from Samantha and paying up front for our stay (this always rankles a little) we were given a choice of where to pitch and so it seems to be a case of first come first served; there are no marked pitches. There are washing up facilities, toilets and showers which can be used for a maximum of six minutes at 20p a minute. We had no problems with supplies of hot water. The toilet and shower facilities are fine: I’ve seen better but I’ve seen more that are worse.
In our short stay we didn’t make any use of the village except for a playground that was marked “For residents only”! But Fieldhead is well located for walks in the area as well as some daytrips; we went to Castleton and went down Treak Cliff Cavern – recommended as the better of the Blue John Stone mines around the town.
The presence of the Moorland Centre at the campsite is a plus if only to get ideas of what to do during your stay.
There are, inevitably, some negatives. Although there are plenty of bins in which to put your rubbish I was disappointed to discover that there were no recycling facilities. We were also unhappy to be told that after a barbeque we were not allowed to use any of those post-BBQ imitation logs even though our barbeque was at least 18” off the ground; this is the first time that we have had such restrictions and the campsites that we stay at are not dissimilar to Fieldhead.
We felt that two washing-up sinks was one too few for the size of campsite and we had to queue on more than one occasion. I was also irritated by the fact that there was no soap provided in the toilets; a couple of tubs of liquid soap costs little, is convenient (especially for the kids) and engenders good will.
Unlike some others I found the noise of the railway line annoying, especially the long, heavy freight trains that occasionally rumbled by even well into the evening. And particularly disappointing was the level of noise at around bed-time. On arrival you receive a list of rules/expectations which, among other things, repeats a note on the website: “Silence is required 10.30pm-7.30am”. We may have been unlucky but I’ve never been on a noisier post-curfew campsite. In fairness the noise seemed to be coming solely from the field on which we were camping but it was significant and particularly frustrating as we had stressed upon our children that they must be silent after 10.30pm.
However, the next two negatives were significant for us. Because the campsite is composed of several small fields there is simply not enough room to play for children who are over ten or eleven years old. It’s not such an issue for the younger kids as they don’t tend to play games that need a great deal of room and on the field in which we camped there was a small copse which they loved exploring. I was also irked by the requirement to vacate your pitch by 10.30am. We don’t camp light and striking camp is a palaver; but no campsite I’ve ever been on had such an early deadline.
I can see why so many previous reviews rate this campsite highly. But for our family circumstances, and those of the friends with whom we camp, it didn’t quite meet our needs. I suspect that it is more suited to families with small children, walkers and adults.
