After our 4th visit in 3 years all we can say is that Petruth campsite is probably our most favorite site in the UK. Jules and the team have created a brilliant atmosphere and totally understand what most campers want from a site and its facllities.
Toilets are cleaned twice per day and the showers are always hot! What more could you want? Every year we have seen progressive improvement in all of the amenities and we have never had a complaint or heard of one. Pizza delivery, Icream man and on site pizza oven (weekends) In a nutshell, Great people, great place. Visiting Cheddar Gorge is a great excuse stay at Petruth Paddocks! Thanks for everything guys. Brilliant

Have been coming here since 2009 and just keep coming back:))
On arrival at check in you are given a small book with all the info you need, read it its a gem and also gets you discount at some local facilities!
Wonderful place for sight seeing, walking, cycling etc.
The facilities have much improved over the years, Toilets and showers cleaned regularly, washing up facility, teeth cleaning area and even a herb garden.
Fire wood and fire pits all available from site for a small charge
Just a short drive up the road or a good walk along the drove is the Early Doors cider barn, good proper food and good cider and beer, Jason who runs it is a diamond. (dogs allowed)
White Hart pub in cheddar does good food and drink (dogs allowed)
Hunters lodge near Priddy is worth a visit, flag stone floor in bar, beer served straight from the barrel and the best cheese and onion rolls ever. (dogs allowed)
Wilkins Cider farm is worth a visit, ask site staff for directions or ask at the Cider Barn.
Brilliant farm shop nearby at Nyland, and a good butchers in Cheddar village near the Market cross.
Walking distance to Cheddar town & the Gorge.
Lovely Views of the Mendips and surrounding countryside.
Ideal for visiting Wokey hole, Eber Gorge Wells, Glastonbury & its Tor, Street etc
Jules, his family and team are always helpful and will do whatever they can to make your stay enjoyable.
If Carlsberg made campsites it would be Probably the Best Campsite ever!
On our last stay we hired one of the Shepherds huts for the Grand children and family, they loved it, we called it the hobbit house
Also nice to be on a dog friendly site that doesn't have dog mess everywhere!

We had a group of 16 stay at Petruth and everyone had an excellent time. We arrived quite late in the evening due to traffic but Jules and the team made us welcome when we did arrive. They were very helpful and considerate, and gave us a great plot at the end of the site. We had lots of space for some low-key ball games.
The facilities were good, with toilet, washing and shower units all available. There was an issue with hot water on one afternoon but the team soon fixed it and I personally had a nice hot, strong shower.
Location wise, Petruth is ideal - c. 10 min drive from Cheddar Gorge and within walking distance of a good number of pubs and Cheddar.
All in all, highly recommended if you're visiting the area.

We arrived at Petruth Paddocks to find the reception hut abandoned, but a quick call to the owner’s mobile revealed the warden was likely to be in his caravan (which he was). We were allowed to choose our own pitch which was great. Not so great was realising as we settled down that the pitch was covered in dog poo - nice. To see the warden’s dog come and leave a present by our van did not make us feel any better about it- and the “oh goodness what has he done, and oh no I’ve forgotten a poop bag” when we were seen to have observed the event did make us wonder about the source of the rest of it. There is no grey water disposal provision, I was advised by a neighbouring van to chuck it into the bushes.
Toilets and showers were OK, not fantastic- portacabins basically. Showers were free and good, which is a big plus. The site was undergoing a fair bit of work whilst we were there, so there was the feeling that a JCB or a workman was going to join you in the shower, which was a bit disconcerting. The policy of vehicles related to the site was only very loosely enforced, and people driving too fast and way into the evening (11:00) was prevalent. The warden and his kids zipping back and forth in their two stroke golf buggy added to the feeling of being parked in a layby. We were assured that the electricity was very unlikely to trip, yet it tripped repeatedly (at the big main hub, not at individual towers); being alternately reset by a woman in a nighty in the caravan next to us who seemed well drilled by now, by me, and by a warden (having driven the 100m to it, at about 01:00), and on one occasion in the middle of the day by the warden’s son. The Internet was down the whole 3 days we were there.
For the privilege of this experience we paid I think the most amount of money per night of any site we’ve ever stayed at, at about £33 for a caravan, 2 adults and a 4 yr old, off season. In fairness the staff were friendly and likeable, we just felt that the relaxed nature of the place was taken too far, and that they traded on a trendy festival image over substance.

This is a great site in a wonderful location. We used it as a 2 day stop-over on our way down to Cornwall from Cheshire and we had a really good stay. It is a 'back to basics' kind of site but this is part of it's charm. It is very relaxed and the atmosphere is really friendly and sort of 'festival' like. There are some EHU pitches that are hardstanding but we were on the first field and despite it being busy we were able to pitch where we wanted within reach of a hook up. It was pretty muddy in general as there had been an awful lot of rain the day before we arrived, sometimes they stop cars going into the fields to try to minimise the mud but advise taking wellies! There are a lot of groups as they have no restrictions on this.
The facilities, though basic portacabins, are clean and well maintained and the showers are some of the best I've had on a campsite - hot and free flowing! There is only one washing up station so there can be a bit of queuing at busy times and the 'teeth brushing / washing station' only has cold water. They have a freezer for ice packs and the reception marquee has information and leaflets for whatever you need. There is no shop but the village is a short walk away with a Tesco express.
The booklet you are given on arrival is full of fantastic information on frequently asked questions on the site and surrounding area, it was really informative. You are able to have open fires provided you use the fire drums and wood that they sell but we really loved being able to do this for the first time on a campsite. They go round selling the wood in an evening and all the kids get a ride on the trailer, our eldest (6) loved this.
The site is within easy reach of Cheddar and all the attractions - it's an area we really enjoyed visiting.

Booked for 2 nights but ended up only staying the 1. Very busy site that really is just a couple of fields with some portaloo's and portable shower units. We were In the quiet field which wasn't much use as there was some sort of festival going on in the next field ( think it was called the sitting in a field festival! Shame it wasn't sitting in a field quietly festival!) that kept us awake till the early hours (although obviously this isn't the fault of the Petruth team). Really wasn't our sort of camping to be honest as there is no character to the place at all. On the positive side I would say that the team running the campsite are really positive and friendly and try really really hard to make people's stay enjoyable, although the facilities are very basic they were almost constantly being cleaned which given there were over a thousand people staying the weekend we were there takes some serious graft and I would commend the team there for their efforts. Jules who runs the site was particularly friendly and helpful as was the young lad who showed us round on his quad bike ! Very convenient to get into cheddar gorge which was the main reason we were there, after our visit where I have to say we were completely underwhelmed by the gorge and caves ( we kept looking at our map thinking we must have missed something), we didn't see much point in sitting back on site for the evening listening to a racket next door so headed home early.

We spent two nights here and found it quite a pleasant site, although something and nothing to be honest. The field was mostly flat with some nice views. Toilet block was adequate but nothing fancy. On the weekend we visited there was a local charity event so the middle section of the field was roped off for those people - hence we were treated to a bit of loud drunken arguing late at night. There was a family with a large dog running loose the whole weekend, which was making me rather nervous. The owners were friendly and helpful and the log delivery was a really nice tough. Convenient for walks and close to Cheddar village. Nice enough but I probably wouldn't stay here again.

The site was basic, nice and level, easy to pitch on and we never felt cramped for space. There are two fields, one for groups and one for families. There aren't many rules, over and above common sense, which helps you feel more relaxed but this can mean the site gets a bit rowdy after dark. Being able to have a fire is excellent and many take advantage of this, having the brazier and fire wood delivered to your tent each evening is a bonus. Check-in was straightforward and we were welcomed, given the appropriate information and directions. The facilities are quite basic, being in portakabin type structures, but the showers are free, powerful and hot. Toilets and washing areas were generally clean considering it was a muddy weekend. One bonus for us was the pizza delivery, an excellent alternative to cooking that was enjoyed by all of us. Away from the site there are plenty of pleasant walks and the town of Cheddar is an easy 10-15 minutes away with plenty of pubs, take-aways, restaurants, supermarkets and of course Cheddar Gorge and all it has to offer. The mud at the entrance to the second camping field was not ideal and it was bad enough to have to stop vehicles coming through. However, it had been raining for some time so it wasn't surprising. Once the rain stopped the area cleared quite quickly. Wifi was available but this was for an extra charge, bearing in mind the limited mobile phone signal in the area I would have thought that free wifi would be provided. I would return to this site again, the area is beautiful and the site is a convenient starting point for many local attractions.

We arrived late Friday afternoon to very friendly owners and a large spacious campsite. Toilet and shower facilities were ok, but clean, free and the showers nicely hot.
The location is great. On Saturday morning we walked into Chedder for a mooch and ic cream. We returned to what felt like a completely different campsite. The arrival of weekend visitors while we'd been off on our jaunt had reduced our space to none! One tent had even pitched with guy ropes so close to ours that you had to step over them to get to through. The lovely open space that the kids had so enjoyed playing in was no longer open and there was no room for games of football or the like. We thought that we'd be able to see them playing on the Landrover in the middle, but that view was entirely obscured by other tents. The facilities were no longer clean, except for the moments immediately after cleaning the noise of vehicles and people was obtrusive well into the early hours.
For it's location and friendliness, this might have been acceptable, had the price, at £41 per night not been the highest we've ever had to pay on a UK site.

Family in a tent. Stayed over the half term / BH weekend. Very very very very busy and very very Noisy site. Basic facilities which couldn't cope with the huge amounts of people on site during the BH weekend. Problems with the amount of EHU users meant that the Electric kept tripping out and took ages to be reset. Lovely that we could have an open fire. Lovely area local to the campsite.
