Back to basics camping, good for families. Relaxed, friendly, helpful owner. Good fun with camp fire (logs sold at £8 a bag). Showers / loos are portakabins as they are not on mains drainage. The facilities were okay but lots of insects and a little dirty. Only one washing up sink which again could do with a good clean. Nice walk into cheddar, recommend the Bath Arms for food, drinks.

The Petruth Paddocks' own website information is very accurate. The staff are welcoming and helpful throughout, for example Jules does take the kids for rides in his trailer and the showers are hot. Campfires are encouraged with wood sold. The view of the Mendips is excellent. The site is a short walk from the village with shops and pub. Also it is only a 15-20 minute walk from Cheddar Gorge.
There are a good number of hot showers and toilets.
Didn't use it, but there is a pizza delivery service and the village has a few shops, restaurants and take-aways if you don't fancy cooking. There is a wi-fi service, but I did not use it. The site provides a useful booklet which details all the rules(common sense stuff) and facilities.
Maybe extra washing up basins would help, only 2 at the moment.

Just spent a week here, had a great week, lovely people, dogs loved the site!close to Cheddar town centre and the gorge, no kids playground but loads of space for children to run about and make friends with other kids!
Toilets and showers are basic and the dishwash sinks are outside, but we loved the back to basics camping!
Local pubs are dog friendly and a trip to Wilkins cider farm is a definite trip! We will definitely be back again!

We have just come back from a fantastic weekend in Cheddar made even better by the fact that we chose to stay at this site. We are very new to the world of motor homing and booked this site due to the reviews we had read.
We arrived quite late on Fri evening but this wasn't a problem at all as we were met by a very friendly face and quickly shown to our pitch. The camping field looked pretty lively with a fire going and plenty of campers around it having a great time. The caravan and motor home section also looked quite busy for that time of night. Despite the lively first impressions however, the site was very peaceful with no loud shouting etc.
The next morning we tried out the showers - the shower was hot and had excellent pressure. We were lucky we didn't have to wait to use them as I expect it gets busy at times. The shortage of showers would be the only small criticism we would have although not necessarily a problem for us as we have a shower in the motor home if needed. The owners explained to us that they had had a massive increase of bookings since last year so were concerned about this themselves.
Our electric stopped abruptly Saturday morning but at the time we didn't really know why - it wasn't until we were getting ready to leave that we realised that the cable had been accidentally cut through by the young man who was trimming the hedges and keeping them tidy. This wasn't a problem however as when we mentioned it to them our cable was replaced immediately. We could not fault them at all. The campsite owner Julian could not be more helpful or friendly. He even took our son out on the quad delivering fire wood etc around the campsite - it made his evening as allowed him to meet other children from the site who were also enjoying the quad ride.
We will definitely be returning to this site. We could not fault them at all. The only way that this site could be improved would be regarding the toilet / shower blocks as although they are new and work great, they are only porta cabins which would probably get extremely busy during peak times, but this is only a small issue.
Overall, a fantastic campsite - possibly the friendliest site staff and most relaxing location right on the door step of Cheddar Gorge. Great location and great site. Thanks for a lovely weekend break.

Two of us spent a long weekend at petruth paddocks campsite and really enjoyed our stay. We would have been happy to have stayed for a whole week. We hope to return as soon as possible. As soon as you arrive you can see that it is a well run and popular campsite. You can pretty much pitch up any where in the camping field you like and you can leave or arrive anytime between 9 am and 11pm. You can have campfires which we did every evening logs and kindling can be purchased there. Toilets and showers were always clean and the showers were hot and very spacious with plenty of room to get dry and dressed. You can walk from the campsite along the strawberry walkway that takes you to cheddar town witch has two supermarkets. If you continue to walk on you come to the gorge area which is full of shops pubs and tearooms. A short drive up the road is a few fruit and veg stalls on the side of the road selling delicious strawberrys and other things. Cheddar garden centre and go kart trak is also nearby. On a Sunday you can walk from the campsite to a big carboot sale. You can even have food delivered to your tent from pizza magic. This information and a lot more is in a booklet you are given when you arrive. In the middle of the camping field is an old land rover that the children of the campsite absolutely loved. They also enjoyed rides in the trailer that delivers your logs. It was a joy to see children having so much fun and letting there imaginations run wild without computers and mobile phones. We met with a couple of family members while in cheddar and they came back to the campsite for an hour before they left to drive home and even they said that it was a lovely atmosphere very relaxing and how nice the staff were. The staff here are absolutely fantastic and so laid back. Everyone who was camping while we were there seemed so happy and having a great time. Overall I cant wait to come back to petruth paddocks campsite.

We have just returned from Petruth Paddocks in Cheddar, Somerset. We had a fantastic weekend. The camp site is very basic but fulfilled our requirements (back to basics camping). The owners were really friendly and welcoming and couldn't please us enough. Any problems that arose were dealt with immediately. You can pitch more or less anywhere you like unless you have electric hook up but even then the pitches were large, we pitched two five berth tents with two cars and a wind break and still had lots of room. The camp fire went down a treat with all in our party, kindling wood, fire lighters and logs supplied by the owners at a small cost and were delivered directly to your tent, there were fire pits near the tents to use. Showers were very hot but there are only 8 available so can get busy. The shower blocks and toilet blocks are portakabins with steep steps up to them (careful with little ones). Toilets were a little disappointing, 3 cubicles for the ladies and 2 for the gents, they became very dirty quickly, advice, take own loo roll and hand wash. Sunday night a van turned up in the field and set up a gazebo selling freshly made stone baked pizzas, yummy, place your order and pizzas cooked in approx 20 minutes, reasonably priced. Site close to Cheddar and the Gorge, both within walking distance approx 15 minute walk following the Strawberry line walkway and cycle path. In Cheddar village itself there is a supermarket and medical centre as well as local shops. Would we go back again? Yes we would. Brilliant!

This site was refreshing as. Arrive when you like, leave when you're ready to, contact the owners if you need anything.
We loved the bare fields and choose your pitch around a fire pit!
The greetings were friendly and informative.
The children in our party had a amazing time riding around in the buggy delivering logs of an evening.
We loved the pizza delivery idea although indulged in the fresh stonebaked pizza being cooked on site on the Friday evening.
A nice safe walk to the centre of town in less than 10 mins with small children!
One moan. We did think £3 a night for a dog is a little expensive as its only £7-50 an adult. But that's it, nothing else to moan about.
The view, situation everything was lovely. I also felt relaxed with the regular visits from the owners during the evenings keeping an eye on fires and music levels.
One last Thankyou for the jump leads too.
See you soon.

We have just come back after three nights at Petruth paddocks.
Very lovely place, and really nice pleasant staff. We were made very welcome.
The space on the field was brilliant for our little boy (18 months old) as he was able to wonder around with not having to worry about cars etc.
It was also really good for our two dogs.
The only down side was it cost us £18 just for the dogs for three nights, I thought this was very steep as the dogs don't use facilities (toilets/showers etc).
We will definitely return to Petruth paddocks once the dogs cost has been reviewed.
Thank you Jules and David for being so nice.

Firstly we were greeted by a very happy lady who couldn't be more helpful if she tried considering the nightmare the site was having, a worker chopped through the main power supply to the camp site but within an hour of our arrival they had mended the problem.
We really loved the fact that you weren't sandwiched in to a marked out site you could camp anywhere you fancied and all the grounds are level so we had no need for tire wedges, we had a camp site set up with camper van, gazebo, windbreakers and our new tripod BBQ which everyone who saw it said what an amazing idea and it worked perfect with our camp fire which was one of the main reasons we we chose to stay at Petruth Paddocks you are seriously encouraged to have a camp fire which is awesome and not the norm.
Once we were all set up the owner came round to meet us and make sure we were happy and made us feel welcome he is everything you want in a campsite owner operator and for that reason Petruth Paddocks will be visited by us most weekends and holidays.
We were lucky enough to be some of the first campers to try out the totally amazing showers they are simple and down to earth nothing too flash but the pressure and heat are better than most peoples homes so 10/10 for the new showers, the toilets are again basic but kept very clean and you can't ask for more than that.
The camp site is a 10-20 minute walk dependant on walking pace and the Cheddar Gorge a further 5-15 minutes through the town, you have a go-cart circuit within a 5 minute walk which on Sundays turns into probably one of the southwests best car boot's which is a bonus if you are into that sort of outing.
I have heard people saying the campsite is difficult to find, it's not you just have to read the instructions carefully that Petruth Paddocks gives out and you will find it no problem, maybe a sign out on the road would help and I will ask the owner when we see him in two weeks time, he' s up for any suggestions that may help the fellow camper have a blast.

The first time me & my other half have been camping in years and it was amazing because of this place, even if we only stayed for 1 night.
Arriving we found it a little difficult to find, but once we found the turning a nice couple showed us where it was.
Nice greeting and easy payment.
The fields are really large, flat & it's nice to be able to just pitch up where you like, instead of having to keep within lines. We paid for logs & kindling to make a camp fire, which was such a reasonable price! There are very few rules & the ones they do have are perfectly understandable & for the good of the campers staying there.
The toilet block was a very short walk from where we pitched up & were always clean; the only thing I found was the toilet roll kept running out really quickly! We didn't use the showers, but from what we saw they looked really nice, as well as the sink for dishes next to them.
We took a walk into Cheddar, which only took us 20 minutes with the route given to us on arrival & there are shops even closer than that! There is a karting place just up from it that we found got really noisy & went on until 10, but when you have your music on you can pretty much ignore it.
Overall we had a pleasant stay & will definitely be visiting again! Thanks to the fun & friendly people who run it!
