On arrival we were met by the very friendly warden who gave us a choice of pitches. The pitches were large and spaced out. The facilities were very clean with personal touches like flowers which I always like.

There is a little summer house which has plenty of information leaflets.

As others mention there is quite a lot of noise from the road which is a shame as the views are amazing.

Strawberry is the site we visit most often as is isn't too far from home, when only going away for a weekend. This is our fourth year visiting Srawberry and we will continue to do so because we love it!

We don't use the toilet block personally, but often pop in while out walking and it is always immaculate with fresh flowers!

The owners, Howard and Elizabeth, are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble.

There is a small shop, which sells very basic essentials for example, toilet flush and gas bottles. Which is all were have ever needed whilst being there.

We visit all year round and even though it is busy in the summer, it is still very peaceful. Plenty of space per pitch. And you are never too far away from bins or water.

We always look for quiet sites, We stayed on this site for 4 days in May 2008 - nice and quiet. We were four adults and two children with tent and pitch with electric.
We used it as a base for exploring the area, we were made very welcome. The owner has worked hard to build a very nice site. The loos and showers are clean and well looked after.
The A1 is a short drive away. We were happy with this site, the electric was charged by how many units used, so for light, fridge and fan heater it cost us 64p. I can't complain, we're going again in 2010 when we visit family in Durham. I look forward to it.

Stopped here for a quick night stopover and was not disappointed as it was very quiet at night and should imagine it always would be with an ever attentive owner, there was road noise from the dual carriageway but disappeared overnight.
Not good for cycling as a very busy road and walking either didn't seem a viable option so transport is a requirement. Tried the local pub down the road (Three Horseshoes) about two miles-good pub grub, nice atmosphere and locally sourced real ales.
£15.50 a night for one with ehu and hardstanding+ extra for any electric used. Toilet / showers above average.

Strawberry Hill Farm lies five miles from the city of Durham. We know this because we drove in to the city on our arrival. How close this is depends on your taste. We were hoping for something closer but the site we originally sought didn't take four man tents. Good thing - the bus we took arrived exactly when it said it would. Bad thing - crossing that road to get to it is horrific as cars careen down the hill at breakneck speed; not good for those with children. Good thing - on the way back the bus driver offered to drop us right at the gate; you gotta love that aspect of rural bus services.

The site itself. We arrived around 1800 and were greeted by the cheerful owner Howard. Howard had taken no details off us bar our name when we had phoned. Personally I'd rather pay the full whack or at least a deposit and be confident of my pitch but there were no problems and I presume lots of people would appreciate such a freewheeling philosophy. He escorted us to our pitch which was up a slightly scary gravel drive on a blind bend - someone is going to lose control on that some day and clobber the oncoming traffic. Considering we were the only ones in the field at the time he seemed overly concerned with where we were putting our tent, although he then explained that it had been busy the previous night which is fair enough. The field itself does feel a bit exposed but that may be the weather in Durham which is going to be more, er, blustery than it is down south where we habitually stay so that can't be helped.

We pitched up and went to check the facilities, again to be found down a path with a nosebleed-inducing slope. Take care at night. The washing facilities were unremarkable. The toilets were not. I can honestly say I've seen worse in four star hotels. The showers are proper units, not converted toilets. The room was pleasantly warm throughout our entire stay, day and night. There were all manner of nice touches, such as the extendable mirror for shaving, that you never see in other sites. A class act all round, and free to boot. The owners deserve a lot of credit for the care lavished on this essential side of any stay.

In short, Strawberry Hill's location does count against it. There is nothing in the vicinity of the site and when you consider that Durham is the star attraction it's a wee bit too far away. But the site itself is very good, genuinely friendly welcome and you can't recommend those toilet facilities highly enough.

We picked this site as we wanted a long weekend away but I had to go to work on the Saturday so needed somewhere close enough to allow me to do this.

The site was lovely, and not too crowded. The landscaping has paid off. We even picked wild blackberries growing in the hedgerow and made crumble in the van.

Howard was superb. He helped us site the van and couldn't do enough to help. (even to the point of offering to carry our chemical loo up to the disposal point for me).

The whole site had a lovely relaxed feel about it and we will be paying a return visit.

We visited as our main family holiday, planning to stay for 10 nights. On arrival we were greeted by Howard and Elizabeth who were both extremely friendly and helpful. They gave us a lot of very useful information about the local area.
We were shown to our spacious pitch with views overlooking the valley. The site is arranged in tiers on a hillside and is very well maintained. The pitch always felt quite private and not overlooked.
The shop was basic, selling just camping essentials but we were given clear directions to the nearby Tesco. It would have been useful if the shop stocked a bit more in the way of foodstuff, milk etc
The toilet and shower block which incorporates the laundry and washing-up area was always spotlessly clean and although there was only one block we never had to wait for any of the facilities. We had electric hook-up for lights, radio, kettle etc, the bill for which worked out at about 8 pence per night, cheaper than staying at home!

There are no playground areas, however the site is sufficiently spacious for games of football, cricket etc.

The only slight downside to the site is the slightly intrusive traffic noise and the entrance which is situated on a dual carriageway which makes it a bit awkward to head in towards Durham itself.

Unfortunately we had a camping accident and had to leave a few days early, Howard insisting upon giving us a refund for the remaining nights. Overall an excellent site which we would thoroughly recommend. We have already booked one of their static caravans later in the year.

Just spent 3 pleasant nights here. A warm welcome and excellent clean facilities with free, hot and powerful showers. Nice quiet area but road noise can be a bit off-putting.
Handy for lovely Durham [seek out the Victoria Inn, little changed since it was built in 1899 / good real ales], Beamish and Necastle. Durham also has an excellent Leisure Centre with free wi-fi [where I am writing this]

A lovely site that we visited following reviews here. It is maybe a little windswept and does have road noise, these are comments not a criticism. The pitch we had was flat with loads of space for the awning and still with lots of room roundabout. The welcome from the resident owners was warm and they worked hard to keep the facilities clean. They seemed to be almost permanently in te small toilet block which had ample free hot water. The fees were very reasonable.

The area really splits into two. Historic Durham where we spent an interesting day and the areas industrial heritage such as Beamish where the day was not long enough! An enjoyable short stay and we will be back

We stayed 2 nights 3 days over August bank holiday, (2 adults and 1 child under 3). We chose this campsite after reading the reviews on this website. The campsite is situated about 4 miles from Durham city. We weren't disappointed with the site or facilities and the owners could not have been more friendly and helpful. The toilet and laundry blocks were very clean and tidy, Howard and Dorothy were always around making sure the toilet / laundry and site were kept clean and tidy from rubbish and even going that bit extra by putting flowers in the ladies.

One very good point that we found is that the owners don't tolerate noise late on, as the family in the next pitch was told to keep noise down and this was about 10.30, which is good.

The weather wasn't at its best when we stayed wind/rain which hampered our tent erecting due to the site being situated on a hill, with not much cover from the wind but all pitches were level. But we found where we were pitched was very stony and we bent some pegs.

There was a small shop with the basics essentials in which was not badly priced.

We had electric hookup which is meter read and not part of the pitch price but this does not work out expensive at all.

All in all not a bad site a few bad points were the main road could be heard, and could do with a playground for children.
