Good size pitches, lovely friendly couple, but everywhere urgently needs a good bit of TLC, even the sign into the site! There is considerable traffic noise from the very busy road next to it - nothing the owners can do about that, but you should be aware. There is a pub within a mile BUT you can't walk there without considerable risk, there is not any pavement, we gave it a miss. The bus stop is a 5 min walk but if the council haven't cut the verge, could be dangerous. Nothing for children here.

Booked 2 nights by phone, £35 deposit required. On arrival £44 deducted off Visa. Ladies WC's, shower dated. Old oil filled radiator on wall but off. Too many rigs for facilities. Hot water trickle 35+ rigs
Management response: I would like to take this opportunity to apologise again to this lady as she is quite correct. I did take the £44 pitch fee as a deposit in error and I did apologise to her on arrival. The usual deposit is £35 and the balance, £9, was due on arrival.

During this camper's stay with us there were between 22 and 27 units on site not the 35+ she intimated. This is to comply with our 4 star rating with the ETC.

UPDATE 2017: Please note that this site was taken over by new management in August 2017 so reviews prior to this date refer to the previous management and staff, and may not reflect the current situation.

We chose Strawberry Hill because of its location which is ideal for exploring Durham and surrounding areas. The directions we were sent on booking were clear and easy to follow. The welcome was friendly and there was a little board next to our pitch with my name on so I guess if the owners hadn't been on site we could have pitched.

Each pitch has a hard standing area next to grass with a hookup where unusually, you read the meter to determine electricity usage during the stay and pay for what you use on checking out. We stayed 4 nights, used the kettle, toaster and fan heater, as well as lighting and the fridge, and paid £2. 40, so this seems better value than the normal £2 a night surcharge that we've paid elsewhere.

The toilets and showers were nicely decorated with fresh flowers and there was plenty of hot water, toilet roll and paper towels. At the start of our stay the heat wasn't on but the owners rectified that.

The washing up area is under cover and there is a laundry room with coin operated machine which we didn't use but it would come in useful on a longer stay.

There is no security gate on the site which might be of concern to campers or people who like to store things in their awnings but didn't worry us unduly.

As others have said, there is fairly constant but low level road noise from the main road but this is the price you pay for the location close to the Durham park and ride and with easy links to Beamish, which we visited twice as it was so good.

For anyone wanting a quiet site in easy reach of Durham, Beamish, Hartlepool and surrounding area, this is an ideal site.

We've just returned from a lovely weekend stay at Strawberry Hill Farm. This was our first camping trip with our 18month daughter which has been a great success. We had plenty of space around our pitch for her to play, the facilities were nice and clean and the owners were lovely and friendly. The farm is close to a large Asda and Tesco which was handy for us as we'd ran out of room in the car so had to do our shop after pitching up! I've seen some reviews complaining about the road noise but this didn't disturb us once, even our daughter slept until 8am! We've really enjoyed our stay and hope to try and fit in one more visit before winter sets. If we could pick one fault it would be the large tree blocking the view overlooking Durham from the top camping field, there was a small gap where we could see but if that tree wasn't there the views would be even amazing! But that's us just picking haha thank you Strawberry Hill Farm for our lovely stay ☺

Lovely quiet site. We didn't hear any traffic noise where we were pitched. The owners were very helpful and gave us a corner pitch to give us more room as we were towing a trailer. We had not asked for a bigger pitch it was the owners suggetion. The site is very convenient for going into Durham, which has the most fabulous Cathedral. We would certainly stay here again.

Just returned from a lovely two night break, a party of two units. Our holiday started with a snapped pole, great start to anyones camping trip. Unfortunately we had no spare poles or strong tape, luckily Howard (the owner) came to our rescue as they have a vast amount of spare poles and also had tape, so was able to sort us out without us having to venture to find a camping shop. Nothing is a bother to him or Liz who both work tirelessly to keep the site in excellent order. We will have definitely be returning. Thanks again for all your help you gave to both families.

Stayed for two nights after booking over the phone with the owners son. On arrival to the site the shop/reception was closed but with full instructions as to press a bell and wait. Waited only a few moments and the owners son arrived greeted us kindly and took us to our pitch. He took the electric meter reading gave us a sheet of paper for directions etc which we found very useful. The pitch we had was more than spacious hard standing and grass sided, water tap and electric wasn't to far away so got settled in ok The shower block was standard spotless clean same as the showers and the toilets. This is the first time me and my wife had stayed here but it definitely won't be the last for the small price we paid cannot fault this site. Met the owner the next day couldn't do enough for us nothing was a problem finally on the day of leaving this wonderful site we paid the electric bill a massive £1. 80 laugh out loud brilliant We have just come back today 14th June 2015 and will return with our caravan in the near future.

Just come back from a great stay at strawberry hill farm, so quiet and friendly, great weekend no loud noise as stated on the write up from the owners so was great with having small children. Would definitely be coming back. Was near to park and ride so was handy the lady who owns the site told us where to go so we enjoyed going down there for a couple of hours.

My wife and I and 2 dogs stayed here for our 1st outing of the year. We chose this site because its 20 mins up the a19 and we needed to be close to home because of 2 family members with serious illness. We were a little concerned about previous reviews but had a good stay. I`m not a great lover of traffic noise but it didn't bother us in our unit. The site is next to a road so its not rocket science to expect it. The owner was very friendly and helpful and we were given a good choice of pitches. The facilities were clean and we had no trouble with the light going out. We were given a rule/information sheet on arrival which was no different to any other site we`ve visited. If all campers/caravaners/dog owners used common sense you wouldn't need these sheets any way. The site is set up to be natural to attract wildlife and we had many birds visiting our feeders. If you turn right out the site and walk the grass verge for about 200 yards there is a lane that runs adjacent to the main road and you can let your dogs off the lead for a run. Another couple of hundred yards turn right between a house and garage and there is a nice public right of way over the fields to the village of shadforth where there is a nice dog friendly pub and more walks the other side. Apparently someone complained about the gravel road leading into the site, I don't understand that criticism, if you want tarmac roads go to a holiday park and pay £35 per night. Bottom line for me is if you want natural habitat, value for money, clean facilities and a central base for visiting co. Durham then give it a try. Also, on electric hook up, you only pay for what you use. We`ll be back later in the year to see everything in bloom

The positives for this site - The owner (cant remember his name) was friendly, he showed us to our pitch, explained how to read the electric meter and gave me a list of the site rules (more on this later). The location was easy to find, we could not hear any traffic noise from our pitch. The pitch was on hard standing with grass alongside. The toilet/shower block was reasonably clean. We didn't use the laundry or pot wash facility so can make no comment.

The negatives (in my opinion)- The showers need updating, they are small, the water pressure is low and the water temperature was luke warm to cold. Evidently 'if the water temperature goes cold you have to wait 30 mins for the water to heat up again'. I don't think this is acceptable as I stand naked in the shower with shampoo in my eyes waiting for the hot water to arrive. Also there is no natural light in the toilet/shower block and the lighting is on a timer which meant that half way through my shower the the light went out and I had to leave the cubicle and feel my way out into the main area to wave my arms around to get the lights to come back on. This could have been embarrassing if somebody else walked in. The same happened whilst using the toilet at night, as I sat in the dark unable to see anything which was really scarey. Another issue for me was the amount of rules stuck up everywhere. I have stayed on many sites with many more facilities and not read so many rules for what is essentially a field with electric and an old fashioned toilet block. Also whilst we were on the site the grass was far too long.

We would not return until the toilet/shower block is updated.
Management response: Cheeydog's posting I found disappointing and upsetting. I wasn't angry about their comment about the water running out because there is a potential as the hot water is stored (several gallons) just like a domestic cistern but far more, however during 2014 the hot water has been constant, or the size of the showers because the shower trays are a standard size that you can purchase from any bathroom suppliers and conform to building regs, or the fact that the sensor turns the light out if there is no activity in the main body of the shower block for around 18 mins and I can understand why cheekydog said that we hand out a list of rules on arrival although the document is quite clearly headed 'information'. I. E. Directions to Tesco and the Park and ride, grey water and elsan disposal and the time we clean the shower block. The shower block is fully refurbished every winter for our reopening on the first March and after a heavy season it is ready for it's annual dose of TLC. And we don't display rules around the site only information.

Had cheekydog mentioned their disappointment I would have suggested they use a shower room which is 3 x 3 metres approximately. A self contained wetroom, no shower cubicle or light sensor.

What HAS upset me is, and I quote 'essentially a field with electric' We built this business from scratch and installed a full sewerage plant and infrastructure, cost, 58k, electric transformer and infrastructure 26. 5k, water supply 24. 5k, road network to the main highway 28. 5k FIELD terracing and planting 59k and the resurrection of of a derelict barn to our shower block 55k.

A motorhome pitch per night in September for 2 people is £8. 50 each with unlimited water and free use of our shower block.

In closing we don't get 4 STARS English Tourist Council for nothing.
