This site is how what every other site should be judged by. As soon as we booked we had a nice feeling about this place. The lady on the phone (Elizabeth) was very polite and friendly and kindly pointed us to the directions on the webpage.
Following the directions provided we arrived easily and were greeted by the owner (Howard) who booked us in. The first impressions were of a clean, well designed and lovingly maintained site. The friendly owner knew exactly where to pitch us and we were really glad of his recommendation. It was flat, sheltered and had an electric hook up.
This site is quiet and peaceful with all the comforts you would expect such as a clean toilet block with quality warm showers and a washing up area. The things which which really made it stand out were the finishing touches such as shaving mirrors in the mens and the information hut which is a fantastic idea and incredibly useful. There are loads of information leaflets for things to do. I came to do some cycling and found some maps available along with the museums etc.
The owners had taken the time to put information signs up in places and gave out info flyers which made things run smoothly for us.
Overall we think this place is 5* and will definitely return. We didn't know this area had so much to do! I cannot think of a better place to stay next time.

We arrived on a sunny Sunday afternoon on August 2nd 2009. The entrance to the park is only accessible on one side of the dual carriageway the A181. It is only approachable on the Durham to Thornley side of the A181. Approaching the other way you will need to make a you turn.
On entrance to the site the signs direct you to the reception area. The owner of the site comes with you and shows you your pitch and notes the electricity meter reading. You only pay for what you use, in our four night stay we used 10 units and were charged exactly 84pence for this. That's much better than the £2-3 a night some sites charge.
Most of the pitches are level and flat but we did see one or two sloping ones, which we thought would be unsuitable for tents.
The washing facilities are basic but well maintained and kept spotlessly clean. There is a single urinal for men and two toilets also two shower cubicles which in my opinion could have been a little bit bigger. However, all of theses were lovely and well tended. There is a small shop there which sells milk tea coffee etc. There is a freezer pack service too! There is an excellent information point with countless leaflets of places to go and things to do. The pitches are well maintained and the grass is cut on a regular basis.
The only downside to this site is the noise from the A181. We were near to the site entrance so nearer to the road and it can be quite noisy even at night. This did not detract us from having a most enjoyable time here at Strawberry Hill and would definitely recommend this site. Dogs are allowed on site but all those we saw were well behaved and not noisy. There didn't seem to be much for the kids to play on,we didn't see any swings or slides etc but there was plenty of green grass for them to play on.
The site is only a 20 min drive or so from Durham city center. There is a massive shopping complex at Sherburn within a 15 min drive from the site.

A very nice very clean site with well kept spotless facilities, small shop is quite well stocked.
Nothing for the kids but is set in a good sheltered location for a great many activities for all ages
Only down side was the thistles in the hedges which are quite close to the touring vans.
Chalets are truly of superior quality and again spotless

We are just back from Strawberry hill and like everyone else, we can not find fault with the site.
We chose the site after reading the reviews of other members and we weren't disappointed one bit.
The owners are very friendly and nothing was any trouble to them, showers were very good but they can lose power when others are being used, but still good.
They have a Camping field with no electric which looked very nice and 3 other sections with electric hook up, we chose a EHU and camped in the 2nd field from the bottom, at first I found that the noise from the traffic was a bummer but as the days went by it didn't really bother me.
We found that the location was ideal for Durham and Beamish was less than 30mins away and you even pass the Angel of the North where there is plenty of parking.

What a find. We had a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend here. We were pitched in a section at the top of the site with spectacular views over the surrounding countryside. The weather was glorious which always helps but it was very windy; we had chosen the most exposed spot for the view and an opportunity to test the stability and strength of our new tent.
The site is off a main road but although we could hear the traffic it was not intrusive and was more than made up for by the birdsong in the surrounding hedgerows.
The facilities are excellent; clean at all times of the day, plentiful hot water, good laundry and washing up provision. There is no playground but this was not noticed by any of the children who had room to play ball games and could roam the site safely.
There is an excellent information hut which is well stocked with brochures on every possible attraction, activity and place of interest in the area. From here we visited Alnwick Castle and Gardens which is a bit of a drive but well worth the visit (you can get a 2 day pass if you don't want to do it all in one day), Beamish which is a great day out and Durham which has plenty to see and do.
There is a park and ride into Durham but it only operates Monday to Friday and not on Bank Holidays but there are a number of car parks including a multistory 'Bishops Gate' which is right in the centre of town. Back at the site, there is a small shop selling emergency supplies and for other items there is a Tesco a short drive away we didn't need to go but were provided with printed directions.
The owners are delightful and very helpful and clearly really cared that we had a good time. We recommend this site without any hesitation.

This was my second visit to Strawberry Hill and I can assure everyone that I WILL be back. The site is one of the best I have ever been on, we were there 12 nights and I never found anything other than Clean fresh facillities complete with fresh flowers and NO litter. The locality is perfect to go to the coast, the dales and up into Northumberland. On the whole well worth the journey from Aberdeenshire

This was our first visit to this site and I have to say it was lovely, the weather was against us but it didn't dampen our enthusiasm. The owner, Howard was very helpful and pleasant, even apologising for the change in weather which was beyond his control. The toilet block and showers were immaculate which is always an important point with campers. The entrance to the site is a little bit inconvenient as you can only get to it on one side of a rather busy dual carriageway, road noise was loud at peak times but did quieten off later on and early in the morning, the birds took over then! we will return to this site at some point. We used quite a bit of electricity according to Howard, but it was still only £2.18 for two nights.

Firstly apologies for the late review!
We really enjoyed our first stay at Strawberry Hill. As in other reviews, the owners Howard and Elizabeth are very helpful, knowledgeable and obviously take pride in their campsite.
Facilities were immaculate, and adequate for the size of the site. The 'information' hut is very useful, with the biggest collection of leaflets and things to do in the local area we have ever seen, (even tourist info offices!)
As walkers there are lots of options, including a route into Durham, which is well worth a visit.
We visited the local hostelries (all in the name of research) and were suitably impressed.
Can honestly say the only fault we had with this site was periodic traffic noise, other than that it was perfect, even on the day we left there was no need to rush to leave the site and the EHU cost us just 45p (not bad when you have a cool box running all weekend)
Will definitely be back.

This site is a truly wonderful find. As a couple we like to use quiet secluded sites to relax. Strawberry Hill meets our requirements perfectly. We were greeted by Elizabeth and Howard and then escorted to our pitch. Nothing is too much trouble for the owners, true customer service!
The views are wonderful and there is a little traffic noise but only occasionaly and most definitely in the background.
The facilities are great, very clean and plenty of consumable items available (Toilet rolls, soap and hand towels. Electricity is on a meter which you settle when you leave and the price is remarkably low.
I would recommend this site to anyone wanting a quiet, away from it all break.

We have just spend the weekend at Strawberry Hill Farm and loved it!
Howard and Elizabeth run a great site and are really helpful. When we arrived it was extremely windy and as the site is on a hill and quite exposed Howard did his best to select us a sheltered spot which was fine.
After struggling with getting the tent up (it was new and our first time!) we decided we couldn't be bothered to cook and Howard kindly pointed us in the direction of a local Chinese take away (about 3 minutes drive away - there is also a small co op too!)
The site is a short drive away from Durham City centre and there is an extremely well stocked Tourist Information 'hut' on the site if you want info about going further a field.
The site toilets, washing up and laundry are very clean and just the right size for the site. They do sell camping basics in their reception area.
The site doesn't really cater for children which suited us fine.
Howard is VERY strict about security and visitors so if you are intending to have some make sure you let him know in advance so he can make a note of their details etc - there is usually a small charge for visitors but we spoke to Howard in advance about an elderly relative 'popping by' for a hour or so and he didn't charge us for them.
They do charge extra for your electric consumption - we had a fridge and lights on during our 2 night stay and it came to less than 10p (Howard only charges for 25p and over!)
Would definitely go back to the site - it was very relaxing; it is just off a countryside dual carriage way but at the weekend is wasn't that busy and you hardly noticed it and would happily stay there again!
