Strawberry Hill
Booked just a few nights but stayed for score! Was searching 'Best Campsites', now searching no more. Nestled in nature was this leafy idyll, A beautiful campsite. Strawberry Hill.
This south-facing campsite got the best of the day With plenty of foliage to break strong winds away. Generous pitches: hard, soft, E. H. U. 'Tween tree-screened terraces to deflect prying view.
Each terrace: its own water and recycling bins. (Main Block had an Elsan Point hidden therein) Bins emptied daily and grass cut each week But rabbits and wildlife could still play hide 'n' seek.
Main Block: there's free showers and toilets (without wait) And were daily maintained to immaculate state; A separate disabled room tucked round the side; A food prep/dish-washing bay sheltered inside.
There's a washer and a dryer and a rotary line. Paid-Only usage: not tokens nor fixed daily fine. No noise or poor conduct (Owners made frequent rounds) Just the A181 bypass with daytime road sounds.
Owners Elizabeth and Howard, for whom nought was a task, Were so friendly and kind. Campers need only ask! Alas, back to the Rat-Race, else I'd be camped there still! A beautiful campsite. Strawberry Hill.

I felt rather disappointed at our stay here. Last year we hired a static for a week and had a really nice time. The couple running it are friendly and the little hut with leaflets of things to do in the area was really helpful. This time, however, we were in a tent. Our pitch was at the very bottom of the site, nearest to the entrance, so that ‘the children could play’. Unfortunately this meant that we got the most road noise and our walk up to the toilet block was unlit. Grass was longer than I’d like and there were a lot of rabbits about, meaning that the youngest (crawling) couldn’t be put down outside the tent. Fortunately we were away from the campsite from breakfast to bedtime! Two showers in the ladies, brilliant pressure, though a push-button-for-8-seconds-can’t-control the temperature kind. The light inside is on a motion sensor, so don’t take too long getting clean, dry and dressed otherwise you’ll be left in the pitch black! Not one we’ll be returning to I think.

This was my first time camping in a tent, so I wanted somewhere local to go just in case I hated it! The shower and toilet block was immaculate and showers lovely and warm. This is the ideal site if you just want to relax. Lovely views of the Durham country side but you would need a car to get to any decent walks as it is next to a very busy road and surrounded by fields. It's an ideal site for using a a base for visiting the area. The other guests were very friendly. Only two criticisms are the busy road close by and the entrance drive which is very natural with a few potholes in it! All in all though a nice relaxed weekend

We loved this site. We were welcomed straight away, by a very nice man. He explained a few things about the site rules etc. And was very friendly, and chatty with us. He showed us where the facilities was and showed us to our pitch. The pitch was a great size and had more than enough room for our 6 man tent. There were other campers on site who were all very nice and everyone said hello when passing. We were made to feel really comfortable in no time. The toilet and shower facilities were of a high standard extremely clean and maintained. There were sensor lights all the way down the path from camp to the toilet block. The kitchen area was clean, tidy and never had to wait to use it. We loved this site and hope to visit it again real soon. Overall a brilliant site. :)

Compact site on four levels. Ground slopes slightly but didn't cause too many problems. Pitches are large and well spaced out.
The facilities are clean and well maintained but the shower cubicles are a tad on the tight side.
The owners are lovely, friendly and chatty.
As stated by others, electric is metered and paid for at the end of your stay, for us this was £3. 75 for 6 nights, running a fridge, light, radio, phone chargers and a fan heater most evenings.
This site is not really ideal for tent camping as it is very close to quite a busy road and the road noise is constant.
The surrounding area is lovely and there are plenty of places to visit. Durham is a lovely, small city. Climbing the cathedral tower is a must with stunning views for miles. Go into the restaurant and gift shop area and help to build the cathedral in lego bricks.
The nearest pub is the Three Horseshoes about 3/4 mile away, (although not really practical to walk to as there is no footpath), a very friendly pub serving hand pulled Durham Brewery ales and good food.

A lovely tidy site, with nice dog walking facilities, nicely placed just a few minute's drive away from Durham city and all the wonderful places nearby. For us though, with our little tourer, the road noise was just too much. We got very little sleep as every time we nodded off we were woken up by traffic, and the tiredness spoilt our weekend considerably.
All in all, if you have a well sound insulated unit, you'll love it - or indeed if road noise doesn't bother you!

A good site, clean, well managed with friendly owners. The owners were very aware of what was happening on the site and walked around frequently to ensure no problems.
Toilets, showers, wash-up, fresh water, domestic waste disposal all more than adequate. We didn't need grey or back waste disposal so no idea how good that was. Lots of tourist information.
There is a charge for electric but you pay for what you use and the owners aren't making much, if any, profit from this. I use medical equipment overnight and the charge was only 50p for all the electric used which included a fan heater for a short time!
The site is handy for Durham City and the Durham Coast. Lots of things to do in the area.
There is some noise from nearby A181 but plenty of living screens (trees and hedges). The A181 is a busy road but the entry/exit to the site is on a dual carriageway section which makes the turn easier. The site can only be accessed when travelling east (and you can only exit in an easterly direction) but that isn't a real problem as U-turns are easy at roundabouts. We will definitely be returning.

My wife and I and our labrador stopped at strawberry hill over the Easter weekend never having stopped round the Durham area on arrival we were pleased to see lots of information in the cabin next to the reception.
The site has about 70 pitches toilet block has two showers and two toilets we never had to wait for either and the facilities were kept very clean. It is a basic campsite that served as a great base for touring the area and Durham city is lovely with lots of green spaces for your dog to run off the lead and swim in the river. All in all strawberry hill was just what we wanted for the weekend also you only pay for your eclectic when leaving we only used a few pence all weekend and when some sites are charging 3 to 4 pounds extra for an electric hook up it was great value the owners were very helpful and knowledgeable and there is the option to hire a proper BBQ from reception which is a nice touch

Just spent Easter weekend at this great site, the owners were very welcoming. The pitches were very large, some of the largest we have been on, even though it was Easter and the site was full it didn't seem busy.
The toilets were spotless, and the showers lovely and warm. The fresh flowers inside were a nice touch.
We cannot recommend this site enough, and will definitely be back.
