Well we love this site. It rates really highly in its position overlooking the Mawdach Estuary. The views are really spectacular and you could just sit and soak it all in without the need to move on. Walk down the hiill though and you are onto the old railway track, which is a walking/cycling path. Maybe 75 mins to either Barmouth or Dolgellau.
In terms of facilities, the site is roomy and very level. Access is easy from Dolgellau direction. The showers and toilets are fine clean and really do not need comment. The hosts are very pleasant and the cost probably a little high. They have just started charging for dogs which is a shame.
We go at least once a year and I would thoroughly recommend it.

My friends and I have just come back from an idyllic stay at Graig Wen campsite….
We arrived early evening on Friday to be warmly greeted by the owner John, who showed us to our pitch pointed out where everything was. We picked our pitch with EHU taking full advantage of the absolutely fantastic view of the Estuary.
The area we chose to camp was where the tourers, camper vans and tents that required EHU were at the top of the site, near to reception. The area has around a dozen or so pitches all level and flat, the pitches closest to reception enjoy the very best views (worth noting).
The toilet and showering facilities were fantastic, I understand these were fairly new, they certainly looked new anyway. They were always clean and the water was always hot.
There is a more rugged camping field further down the site which is open during the mid to peak season. We had a wonder down there, the views were to die for. I think you may be camping on a little bit of an incline here but the view would more than compensate for that.
There is a great communal camp fire area, there is wood and kindling available in the honesty shop.
The owners could not have been more helpful, we were looking to go for a walk up Cader Idris and they helped us pick our route, we actually saw them half the way up the mountain that afternoon!
I would strongly recommend the site, but my only advice would be to make sure you book in advance during busier periods as the site, quite rightly, gets very busy. All in all a great, well run site, with great views which has access to some of the best walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits the UK has to offer. A1

We stayed at this site for a couple of weeks in August and it was a fantastic get away from it all experience. The site location is stunning, with great views around the site across the Mawddach estuary to the Rhinog hills beyond.
I loved the car free camping - much quieter than most other sites I've been on and safer for children to have free rein. We camped on the Lower Fields with quick access down the hill to the Mawddach estuary trail and a scenic walk along it either to the coast and beaches or a friendly local pub.
The facilities were kept clean and well equipped. It was a brisk walk uphill, rewarded by more great views, to the main toilets and showers, plus well stocked honesty shop and reception. For days when we wanted to stay by the estuary we made use of the compost toilet and drinking water supply for campers on the Lower Fields, all very handy.
The owners were very friendly and knowledgeable about the local area, giving us tips for great days out. All in all a superb wilder camping experience which we hope to return to and have recommended to friends.

Wow if first impressions are anything to go by then this has it all
This is a small site but big on location
There are about a dozen caravans but only two get the full view however ample places to bring a chair and admire the view
From my awning I look out over the vast Mawddach estuary and some of the Snowdonia national park guess where I pitched in my caravan
16 amps hook up toilets clean and very near by two showers very modern electric type with no push button just lovely hot water
There are also two fields lower down with tents in they look great with absolutely loads of space
The pitches have a stone fire pit which I wish I had one outside my caravan but they are in tents
Honesty shop as mentioned before by others a novelty but a very good idea
The bottom of the site has a disused railway line that’s now is a cycle route and footpath this is so beautiful don’t be put off by the hill down it is breathtaking
Picnic table are to be found as you walk along wildlife fish birds fantastic
You know when you have found a great site when you start to plan when in our busy lives can you get back again.

We were looking forward to staying at this campsite given the good reviews we had read. The site is well located to access the cycle trail along the estuary, and shower block was clean. However, these are the only things that this site has going for it.
We camped in the lower camping field which was muddy with long tufty grass and sheep poo. This field is perfect for sheep, but is not suited in any way to camping. Parking near your pitch is not allowed as the field is too muddy and steep for driving. We were told that there were wheelbarrows to carry your camping equipment to your pitch. However, when we arrived, there were no wheelbarrows as both were in use by other campers. Therefore we carried lots of gear, a long way. While unpacking the car, someone was driving a small motorised quad bike vehicle around the parking area and seemed to be enjoying spinning the vehicle around in the mud, oblivious to the fact that those who were unpacking the cars were getting sprayed with mud.
The camping field is very slopy and the pitches are labelled so you cannot choose where to pitch your tent. This means that if your pitch is on a steep slope (as ours was), that is where you have to put your tent. The slope made sleeping uncomfortable - I felt like I needed to be roped onto the tent poles to stop me sliding downhill. It also made cooking, and even sitting in a chair difficult. The field has a water tap, but this was not drinking water. The drinking water and shower/toilet block is up a steep muddy slope back at the main campsite. There are two showers for the whole campsite. Even going for a shower after dark at 9pm, I had to queue.
This is one of the most expensive campsites I have ever stayed at (£50 for 2 people for 2 nights). For this I would have expected a flat pitch and easy access to drinking water as a minimum. I felt that paying £10 for the car was excessive as the parking area was wheel-spinningly muddy and not near the tents. I was disappointed by this expensive campsite with minimal facilities. I felt like I had been ripped off. I will visit this lovely area of Wales again but will definitely not be going back to this site.

We stayed at Graig Wen for the first part of our honeymoon. We were in the caban - a wooden cabin with a wood burning stove and cooking facilities inside.
It was lovely, despite the rotten weather we had. Cosy and warm, comfortable futon, lovely light from the glass window in the centre of the ceiling, and good facilities to cook from.
The view was limited but just a walk down the hill gave stunning views (when the fog lifted!) of the wonderful Mawddach Valley. The showers were very good - free, and with lots of those useful little things like plenty of hooks to put clothes and towel on, space to change without everything getting wet, and a mirror and shelf for lenses or make up.
Loos were spotless and washing up either outside or inside - could have done with a bit of light on the indoor sinks but not a problem.
Lovely small site, very friendly, great shop with local maps and produce and a separate honesty shop.
The area is stunning - we cycled the Mawddach Trail, enjoyed Dolgellau and a trip to the Centre for Alternative Technology, white water rafting at Bala. Weather wasn't good enough for Snowdon but another time.

We hadn't read any reviews, this was just somewhere we wanted to visit on our tour of coastal Wales. Our pitch was one with a view! What a view, over the Mawddach Estuary! Stunning! Having read the reviews after our visit, some facts need confirming and some information needs correcting.
Showers are free and recently updated. Excellent! Honestly shop a brilliant idea, which seems to work well.
Position and access to Mawddach Trail very good, we cycled to Dolgellau one day and walked to Barmouth the next and really enjoyed both.
Owners friendly and interested in all parts of their business.

I have stayed at Graig Wen twice, once in July 2011 for a week and once in September 2011 for three very blowy nights!
I love this campsite, it has gorgeous views, situated perfectly so that you can quite easily have a car free visit. Beautiful walking spot and simple, but clean facilities. The site has been designed thoughtfully and has small thoughtful extras, such as the honesty box, a lovely gift shop at reception, happy, smiley staff and owners.
I stayed at the top campsite, because the lower fields weren't open until a couple of weeks after my stay. Had the lower fields been open I would have been happy to experience the wild camping experience, the only thing that puts me off this is the fact it is aimed at families and I believe the lower fields are very popular during the school holidays. I like my solitude and also since I camp with my dog, who doesn't always like every dog she sees, and even though she is obviously tied up next to my tent I feel it is only polite to keep out of everyone else's way as best as possible, so I don't have to worry about other dogs wandering over! Not to mention the sheep, which I am sure she would have loved a visit from, the sheep may not be quite so keen however!
I am so shocked to see a bad review about this site. Each to their own I guess, I feel that the concept of wild camping was slightly lost on these visitors, surely they wouldn't want the hillside spoilt by levelling off pitches like the commercial sites, having noisy cars, travelling backwards and forwards to the tents and I love the fact that the sheep haven't been turfed out of their lovely field and can roam freely, since I've never seen a sheep use a toilet, a bit of sheep poo is only to be expected!
I would like to say that I never had to queue for the shower, in fact in the whole time I was there I was able to go straight in, and whilst I stayed there both time outside the peak school holiday period, the site was still busy. Yes there could be more showers and for that it doesn't get a 10 out of 10, however, the fact that there wasn't was in no way detrimental to my holiday and definitely not worthy of a poor review
Oh and my lower mark for child friendliness is personal preference, I'd much prefer them to make it adult only, but there you go, each to their own, as I said before!

Having wanted to visit this site for a few years and missing out because of a temperamental T25 I finally got my chance earlier this month. I must say I wasn't disappointed. It was all we could have wished for and more. Even though I jibbed and went for a pitch on the touring site (I was spending 3 weeks here and needed a reliable fridge!) It didn't detract form the peace, tranquillity and beauty of this tremendous site.
Yes the road is busy but by 9 at night the cars had all but vanished allowing the hoot of the owls to come through loud and clear. The lower tent fields are awe-inspiring and next time we will definitely be on one of the spectacular pitches down there.
As for the facilities, they are hard to fault, spotlessly clean at all times. The honesty shop is a great asset and the ability to buy local produce a real boon.
John and Sarah are passionate about each and every aspect of their business and endeavour to make every individual's stay one to remember. As do each of the members of staff that work here. A truly memorable stay.
