Spent a night here with the intention of cycling on the Mawwdach trail. After being greeted by the friendly owners, we were directed down to the fields, being told to pitch wherever we liked. The car track down from the entrance to the main site is not for the faint-hearted but limited camping is available at the top next to the main toilet block.
Being used to a more commercialised site it was a bit of a shock to see the camping fields some distance from the showers and toilets at the top and to find them covered with sheep and sheep poo. It soon started to grow on us though, as we camped in a secluded spot in the valley with our nearest neighbours at least 500 yards away.
This was wild camping at it's best, total seclusion and quiet but facilities within reach. We checked out the compost toilet expecting a stinking hole, but were pleasantly surprised to find it clean and pong-free! Logs are available to buy, as camp fires are positively encouraged in the fire pits dotted around, and are just about the only source of light after dark.
This is a fantastic site if you want to get away from it all. We will definitely be returning and wish the new owners the best of luck with the site.

Well what can I say, sent home blissed out.
Just spent the bank holiday with Charlotte and our dog Jessie in this rural paradise and have to be completely honest I think we've found Nirvana.
There are 40 acres to get thoroughly lost in and the clearest night skies I,ve seen in Britain. We will definitely be back for the perseiod showers. Book us in.
The owners were suitably chilled out and left you to your own devices which is such a change from the usually overbearing commercial campsites.
Don't get me wrong there are rules but these are designed to enhance the physical environment.
There is virtually no noise except for the wildlife. Facilities are basic but clean (if you want all mod cons stay at home)The tree bog is a nice addition and John is always on hand to produce logs on request(I mean logs for campfires of course) They have also started an honesty box(a nice touch) lets not abuse it.
All in all a place with class. If you want a genuine camping experience this is as close as it gets. We will certainly be back. Good luck John and Sarah and keep it just so, we like it like that.
P.S. Remember to press the red button on the shower. If you don't you will be heard down the valley. It's cold

A truly amazing place! What a view that greeted us as we pulled up in our VW campervan. We were there for a week so we chose one of the hard standing plots with electric hook up but there are 40 acres of wonderful countryside to explore and get some real experience of remote camping.
We had a beautiful view over the Barmouth estuary. We also took our bikes which meant we could cycle to the George III pub which is an half an hour's ride along a old railway track that hugs the estuary for some excellent pub grub.
The very hospitable and charming owners Sarah and John are in the process of building a compost toilet in the lower field so the more remote campers don't have to traipse up the hill to the very clean main toilet block.
There are lots of stunning walks to discover and a great place just to chill out in.
We will definitely be going back to explore more.
Oh and the site is doggie friendly as our 2 hounds found out as they hung out with Grace and Jasper.
I would recommend this site to all VW owners as a 'must do campsite.'

We stayed here in our campervan on an eletric hook up pitch overlooking the estuaray, we were the only ones there on Thursday but were joined by a few hard core campers Friday/Saturday - this was on the 1st weekend in March 08 and the biggest storm this year was due to arrive on Sunday. It's easy to find, quite and great for a long uninterupted walk.
We had a peaceful weekend, Sarah & John were lovely and we recieved a very warm welcone at a very reasonable price.
It looks like they have worked really hard to make this site even more beautiful that it previously was! We had a look around the holiday cottage they offer which will be a place we would consider for Xmas/New year this year, it's been fitted out beautifully and has a lovely log fire and ample space for a party of 6.
The toilets are new and clean with toilet roll, also mains water conmections outside and the showers are hot and clean. The views are fantastic - better then we have seen anywhere.
The walk down to the estuary was lovely and the fields for camping are layered down from the main house to the estuary.
Whilst we were there they were building yurts on the field to the left of the mainhouse which looked large and when finished would be fantastic, the views to the mouth of the sea are great and you can watch the sun set.
We will definetley revisit this site, hopefully in less windy times.
Thanks for your hospitality

All we would add to the other reviews is that it also worked for a young family with a four month old baby. The Mawddach cycle trail is flat and safe and allowed us to use a trailer which we would not otherwise have dared use so young and the slow meander along the south side of the estuary, across the footbridge and up Barmouth beach was a fantastic day. Beautiful and deserted.
We will try dragging him up Cader Idris, or around Coed-y-Brenin, next time.

We spent a fantastic week of wild welsh camping at Graig Wen. This campsite is ideal for the sort of person who likes a bit of space and a sense of being surrounded by nature.
40 acres of woodland and fields make for many intimate little camping spaces and the site is situated right on the edge of Snowdonia National park with fantastic views over surrounding mountains and the Mawwdach Estuary and then out over the sea.
There is pleanty to do locally with great upland and coastal walks as well as all the usual attractions such as pony trekking, cycle hire and a good mix of places to visit locally - whether you feel the need to hang out with beach lovers at traditional seaside town of Barmouth or with bearded types at the inspirational (if slightly dusty) Centre for Alternative Technology.
All in all plenty to do and see here, and the site is run by a very friendly young couple who went out of their way to help us out as well us leave us alone to sit around a fire pit and enjoy the wildness.
The only draw back is that it is a bit of hike to the tiolets and showering facilities, but that's as much by choice as we could have camped closer to the site facilities. Also if you have a problem with sheep then this might not be an ideal site for you as they seem to be ever present on the lower wild fields - but again not so on the fields closer to the facilites.
All in all an very special place to pitch a tent - carry on camping!

A very warm welcome was received from the new owners Sarah and John. Graig Wen is set in a beautiful, remote valley surrounded by breathtaking scenery. With 40 acres to choose from, there's an ideal site for everyone, whether it be tucked into a secluded clearing or perched on a hilltop taking in the view of the estuary.
Facilities are basic but very clean and in good working order. It is a good hike up the hill to the loo and showers so the planned composting loos will be a welcome addition. The nearest shops can be found in Dolgellau (15 minute drive) or Barmouth (1.5 hour walk) so it's advisable to take everything that you need with you. There is plenty to do and see in the area whether you're on foot, bike or in a car. The Centre for Alternative Technology is well worth a visit and is only 30 minutes down the road.
If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and an opportunity to reconnect with nature then this is definitely the place for you! Sarah and John we wish you both well in your new venture and look forward to enjoying the peace at Graig Wen again.
