Starting with the good points, this is an attractive site with two large fields that are surrounded by mature trees. The Kings Arms pub (in our 2005 edition of the Good Pub Guide) is 5-10 minutes walk down an unlit path running direct from the rear of the site. It is friendly and food orientated, although we did not dine there so cannot comment on the quality. However, the camp site facilities are basic and not particularly clean. There is only one sink for washing pots and this is exposed to the elements. We only stayed for one night; for which the site was perfectly adequate, but I would not recommend a long stay unless you are prepared to rough it.

We were there for nearly two weeks. It's a beautiful place and you have lots of space. The view over the valley is fantastic. It's hard to understand there are so few people. But…., I think the facilities are too poor. There are a lot of toilets but these should be cleaned more often and more thoroughly. Moreover the place is rather expensive: £15,-- and 50p for a shower.

Nothing has changed regarding previous reviews, but we had a great time there probably due to being with excellent company and we are pretty laid back too. Were told that they intend to build a new shower block. Existing showers, parents beware they could be dangerous for children, boiling hot or cold no happy medium and still 50p. Might be an idea to find a local swimming pool and use their facilities, if intending staying for any length of time. A bike is useful to cycle back and forth to the loos. The area is very picturesque with quaint tidy villages, if you look at the Rutland website there is more to do and see than expected, a trip to Barnsdale (the late gardener Geoff Hamiltons garden) is worth a visit , Seaton has the largest brick built viaduct in the UK, Rutland water very busy at this time of year, it is the areas "seaside". The site is in a nice setting and very spacious, no crossing guy ropes here!

This is a very large campsite, which is in a peaceful setting, but I would not recommend it. Wing Hall campsite is very large, and there are only two showers, one washing up sink, the toilets (there are 10) do not have hand basins, there is one hand washing basin which does not have soap, hot water or a hand dryer nearby. We stayed for three nights and the facilities were not cleaned once in this period. There are no rules at this site, no guidance for noise or moving cars, open fires are allowed. Do not be fooled by the website, the photos are quite out of date, the Hall and garden are in need of maintenance, the facilities are primitive and dirty. However, Rutland Water is fantastic, accessible and has a great variety of enjoyable days out.

Not a very successful visit. Took my 2 children, dog and 2 further members of our family. It was their 1st time camping. The sites toilets and showers are primitive to say the least and not the cleanest that we have come across. The site owner was very vague and charged us wrongly only to return and ask for more money. The site was packed and noisy. A group decided to make noise, singing, swearing and playing a guitar, until turned 3 am and despite protests from other campers, refused to be quiet, nobody appeared from the site to quell the noise.

It wasn’t a bad start as we arrived at about 5:30ish, we could get a pitch quite easily and that was on a Friday just before the bank holiday weekend. It was fine for most of Friday night, but Saturday morning it gets BUSY! very BUSY!! Unfortunately that meant that now we all had to queue for 10 minutes to get into the 8 "new toilets" which looked about 6years old.
If the lady running the campsite asks where you want to pitch, say the lawn but only if you don’t want your car directly next to you tent. The lawn however has electric hook-ups, which would help. If you go into the just tents field then I would advise you go away from trees as the sap can be a real problem and make everything sticky. The fallen down tree seems to be the main children hangout, so if you want peace and quiet the other field is better.
However the facilities of being able to buy fresh eggs from the hens in the morning is a very nice upside. Unfortunately there is now NO village shops and only one pub/restaurant which serves good food at a price

Two large fields make this a peaceful site, despite a massive group of DofE kids staying during our visit- grass kept very well. Only one pub in the village but very nice, also no shop anymore, although the campsite does sell eggs and beans and milk!
Facilities are poor which is a shame, location is great and the actual fields are good.. BUT... from our tent it was a ten minute walk to the ladies toilets (2, +mixed overflow toilets around the back), these were very primative wooden shacks with limited hot water. Two showers (shared between girls and boys) which did charge but I cna't remember how much sorry! The shower cubicles open up directly onto the footpath from site to toilets and as they are very small + dark + spiderey you feel a little exposed!

May 2005 We expected the facilities to be basic at this site & they were - very! Only one sink for washing dishes, and only cold water available. Decided to wash up at tent which was ok until the cold water supplies went on strike! Fortunately only a temporary problem and perhaps being a bank holiday it was due to excessive demand. Only hot water available was in showers (50p a time - but only 2 for whole site, so expect to queue). On a positive note, the site is in a lovely spot with great views. Space for children to play and close to rutland water. Enjoyed our weekend here

May 2005 We visited this site on the last May Bank holiday in our motorhome. Its a great location for accessing Rutland Water with a bike and it has one good pub/restaurant in the village, a very short walk out of the campsite. (Unfortunatelly the other village pub which other reviewers have mentioned, must have closed down in the last 12 months). The remaining pub is really more restaurant than pub, but you can't fault the food, it's top quality.
The campsite really filled up while we were there, so it did push the limited facilities a bit. There are two showers, 50p each! and about 8 toilets all together. I had to queue for the shower one night, but if you time it right you'll be ok.
We will definitely go back to this site, but probably not on a Bank holiday. If you are a couple without kids, make sure you get a plot away from the fallen tree, centre back of field, as this becomes the main kiddies play area, where the action never stops.

August 2004 We visited the site on a Bank Holiday, it was really busy. The facilities let the site down, only two showers. The toilets were very poor with corrigated plastic on the roof which leaked!!!
A bit highly priced for what we actually got. But, we did have a good break, and good for caravans.
