Having returned from we weekend at Wing hall I must admit I was a bit disappointed with it. I made the booking following the good reviews on this site. I booked online only 2 weeks before and ad a telephone call saying there was no EHU for the weekend we booked. This was not stated on the website which is the only way to book. The woman was very helpful though and they called back later confirming EHU was available. The site was busy as it was the first weekend of the school summer holidays. The site has great potential to be a wonderful site however the first thing they need to do is employ a grounds man to maintain the pitches. The grass in the fields could have done with a cut and each pitch would have benefited from strimming to remove any stinging nettles and longer grass. There is a lovely view of the valley from the tent field but this is masked by trees and hedge from the caravan/tent field. Thinning out the hedge would make a big difference. While the toilets themselves were clean the toilet building needed and good clean. They had a lot of cobwebs in them that showed they had not been cleaned for a while. One of the tent fields (I think its field 3) is quite sloped and also has a large number of free range chickens roaming round it. Ok for a while but seems to be problem keeping them out of the tents. I had a lovely hot shower the first night but a cold one the second while my wife used a different set and had hot water both nights.
Electricity is supplied by purchasing a card on arrival which has to be inserted into the meter. We purchase 2 for £2 but only used 1 over the weekend. We had a electric coolbox running all weekend and lights and phone chargers. There is a fridge and freezer available for people to use by these were completely full when we went to use them. The site shop was very good with all your everyday requirements up to beers wines and spirits. I didn't notice it as being pricey. There is a cafe on site which is open early enough to server breakfast and on a Friday and Saturday server evening meals. We didn't use it but it always look busy which must be a good sign. There was a evening BBQ and music planned for the Saturday night but this was cancelled due to bad weather.
To sum up the site could do better with regular maintenance. It wasn't bad enough for us to go home early however.

We were recommended this site but were disappointed with the service, grounds and organisation.
The estate is lovely but rather run down. When we arrived they had no confirmation of booking, although we had our payment slip. We were sent our pitch - if you have a caravan it is very tight to get in if cars are parked on the front of the house. We had to back up for a few hundred yards. When we were at the pitch the EHU organisation was terrible.
The EHU were not in the corresponding pitch numbers to hookup. As you have to put tokens in, you could not disconnect a fellow camper and reconnect. The only available EHU was about 100ft away. We reported this to reception but it took them 4hrs to find an extension cable to plug me in. You pat extra for a aeHU pitch then you have to pay extra for tokens.
The cafe / bar served great food.
If more attention was paid to customer service, up keep of grounds and facilities this would be a lovely stay.

Just back from a very wet few days at Wing. Camping in our TT with three children. Despite the weather had a lovely time and loved this site. There are three/four? fields to camp on, one with EHU. One of the non-electric camping fields looked to be quite sloped but plenty of other good, flat large pitches available. We were on EHU and by the road into the site so some road noise, but ok. EHU payable by card meter, tokens from the shop at £1. 00 a time. Spent about £4. 00 for three days. (but was very cold and had a heater)
Wonderful farm shop, with prices similar to other farm shops. Fresh eggs from the free range chickens wandering all over the site which the children loved. Great cafe also, we didn't use but looked really lovely. There were a few unsupervised children over by the toilets chasing the chickens despite notices asking people to be careful not to scare them. (Husband told off a few of them)
New toilet block was clean (considering the wet weather and the mud!) Showers also looked to be new. Benches outside the cubicle for clothes meant privacy was a bit of an issue but there were some hooks inside. Shower was cold but OH went in the evening and had a lovely hot shower. So could have been time of day/water used up by the two ladies before me? Other showers were available behind the cafe-50p payable. Washing up area 'open air' with canopies over which meant some debris fell onto sinks from trees but for me made washing up enjoyable and the children even washed up twice, so must have been good! No music rule on site which is understandable but didn't seem to be 'policed' as other reviews have suggested. Having had holidays spoiled by inconsiderate music players we were grateful actually. Only issue for me was that the toilets are separate from the showers which was slightly inconvenient.
Perfect base for visit to Rutland water, we took our own bikes, but bikes available for hire at the site. We didn't ask but am sure the owners would know the cycle routes etc. Shops in Oakham, Tesco but also butcher/baker and market Wed and Sat.
A great site if you like 'real' camping and would recommend it.

We stayed over the late May Bank Holiday - three families with 6 adults, 5 children (ages 4-7), 3 family (5/6 person) tents - pitch nos 201, 202, 5 located in the left field next to the access road to wing hall. The pitches were of a good size and flat. The family friendly campsite was a wonderful place to camp for a few days (we stayed 2 nights, Sat & Sun). We thought the campsite is a very relaxed and enjoyable place to stay. Hot water for washing-up sinks and showers can be hit and miss (toilets stopped flushing on several occasions but this was mainly due to the very busy bank holiday and very high usage) - it isn't 5 star hotel - but we weren't unduly bothered and went with the flow. The sun was shining and the kids were enjoying themselves, we all had a lovely time. The on site shop is also very handy as is the freezer for storing ice packs. Recommended.

3 of us stayed here on bank holiday weekend, with a 5m bell tent and a dog. There are 4 camping fields, we were given pitch 211 which is in the corner of the left-hand field when facing the main house, so quite near the road into Wing itself. Fortunately this is a very quiet road so there were no noise issues with this, and the pitch itself was fine-flat and a good distance between us and the next tents. Other fields seemed to be reserved for caravans and motor homes, and were a lot busier.
The shop is justly famous, and also hires out log baskets and the like; there's nothing in the way of shops in Wing, although there is a Tesco and a Co Op in Oakham (and a market on Saturdays, with a fishmonger that sells local trout).
As far as facilities go, there's a portakabin with toilets and potwashing sinks, although the hot water ran out on a couple of occasions. I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem on quieter weekends and the showers we took had plenty of hot water. In all a nice welcoming and very family-friendly site.

The location of this site was excellent for Rutland Water. Arrived at 5pm on Sunday afternoon and drove past large, practically empty fields with one or two caravans and the odd tent. You would think they would have been pleased to see us, but no! 'Have you booked, as the office is closed now?' said a young man standing outside the Hall, who looked most put-out to see us.
'Would you like us to pay you in the morning?' I offered.
'DEFINITELY NOT!' he boomed in disgust at the idea. He went off to fetch a woman who dealt with the bookings. There was a further 'snooty' offering from her, so I showed her UKCampsite page about Wing Hall which I had printed off before we set off.
'We're not on that site, ' she said and argued the point until I couldn't be bothered any longer.
I had a bad feeling about the place and reduced my booking to one night, with a very polite, reasonable, but untrue excuse.
Ugh! The worst toilet facilities I have ever seen. Down a very unstable and unlit path with rocks sticking up and lumps of plastic liner sticking out to be tripped over. A Port-a-cabin with bins overflowing, filthy floors, some parts of which you could clearly see had not been cleaned for weeks. Paper hand towel dispensers empty. Signs everywhere letting you know what you must not do.
The showers at the hall were disgusting, so we decided we would remain cleaner if we didn't partake. The other campers let us know there was no hot water anyway.
One night was too much for us and we were gone at the crack of dawn.

I read the most recent review and felt that as the livelihood of the people running Wing Hall could be affected by these most recent comments it would be reasonable to put forward our own observations. We were aware that Wing Hall does elicit very mixed responses and because it is reasonably near to our home we decided to see for ourselves.
We went on the Bank Holiday weekend when it was very busy and there were some thunderstorms. When we arrived one of the staff was assisting a camper who had a broken tent pole. The reception in the very well stocked shop was helpful and friendly and we decided to camp in the field where there are no set pitches. Some of the designated pitches on the other fields did seem to be rather small. However, there was plenty of room on the fourth field and a very reasonable view of the adjacent fields. The ground was a little rough but with a footprint and very heavy tent groundsheet this wasn't a problem.
The showers were very warm and there was enough room to hang my sports bag on the door and not get everything wet. There was a squeegee to hand and a quick brush over the floor left it in a reasonable condition. The lavatories were in individual cubicles which were more private than on many sites and there was plenty of lavatory paper.
The entrance to our field had become very muddy and rutted but the staff explained that this was a result of the very bad weather and they worked hard to keep it as reasonable as possible. I am not sure why Wing Hall is so often criticised because we felt that it was a reasonable camp site in a good location with helpful staff.

Quirky site really. Four fields on a north-facing slope in the direction of Oakham with views of open fields.
The one abiding memory or two is the customer service. The owners were cheerful and helpful and even re-started the car battery after a lapse in logic from myself. And the hens. Just seem to roam about the place all the time.
It has a nice farm shop, with a wide range of food and drink to buy. The cafe - tho' not tried out by myself - seemed popular and had a singer on the second night we were there (a Saturday). The site had many children but none on my field.
We were in a distant field and chose the lower end - a distance to the toilets and showers [4 mins brisk walk] but to be fair the top of the field was a lot closer. The toilets did run out of paper by the morning but were replenished. The showers were either free or cost 50p. The former were rather cold the first morning (around 7. 30) but more tepid on the second morning (an hour later). Quite cramped however. Others seemed to think that at other times the showers were quite warm. The 50p ones were individually controlled, heat-wise, and thus warmer.
The field we had was divided into rows and had some spiky weeds beneath. It was sloped and quite dry - due to the recent lack of rain. It afforded decent views towards Oakham. Space to pitch did not seem a problem. Likewise, at a cursory glance, other fields.
They offer a free fridge and freezer but space can be limited. Mountain bikes can be hired for £10 upto 3 hours or £15 for more than 3 hours. No chldren's bikes but helmets are offered for free.
Surrounding area is rural, very rural. A train line passes within a mile but it is a branch line and not a problem sound-wise. The village, about a mile away, has a pub but can not vouch for it, if only because I had to go there for directions. Locally Rutland Water is close and Leicester is a good 40 minutes away. It is quite close to the A1, via the A47 - 3 miles to the south. Melton is about 30 minutes away.
I'd really consider going back.

Nice surroundings but was disappointed to get to our pitch and find a tent already in it. We had to make do with a very sloped pitch with uneven ground, long grass and nettles. We had to abandon our table as nothing would stay on it. Getting into a sloping bed was interesting! We were also next to the toilet block. This meant lots of footfall past our tent. The pitch was small so we had to park the car in front of the tent and use the side doors. Avoid pitch 64. The no noise after 10 rule was ignored by the majority so it was very noisy very late. The toilets were ok. The washing up was ok but ran out of water on the hot taps! Nice shop. Didn't use the cafe. The hens were lovely!
Nice setting but too noisy too late for us and we'd prefer a level site.
