We've just got back from a one night stay with our two children aged 5 and 2. We all had a lovely time, I was a little worried that there was no playground to amuse the children but they were perfectly happy exploring and making friends (with the chickens!)
There is one field that didn't allow children, and this seemed to be where most of the chickens gathered, which suited us. We didn't even hear the cockerels in the morning.
The shop was great, we especially liked the chilled wine! We ate in the cafe bar and the food was lovely, if a little unhurried. But we weren't in any rush so it didn't really matter.
All in all a lovely site, we would recommend it and hope to stay again in the future.

This was the first time we have camped at Wing Hall, we were on field 3 which is the most uneven site I have ever seen. The chickens everywhere and the cockerel had us awake a 5am.
There was some heavy rain in the night the turned the site in to a mud bath, cars struggled to in and out. We ended up parking on office car park and carrying the tent to the car as we felt after loading car we would not get off the field. So will not rush back.
We go to the area every year to attend the bird fair. The washing up area was ok showers left me cold.

Loved this campsite as it strikes a perfect balance between 'back to nature' camping with a few extra special touches. There are three separate camping fields, each progressively more 'rural'. One field is home to a large flock of free range chickens (and a couple of cockerels) - you may wish to avoid this if you like a lie in.
The furthest field has fantastic views but is more basic and more exposed to the elements on a windy day - it feels like you're camping in a farmers field with pitches mown into long grass/wild flowers / weeds. We liked it and spotted some great wildlife but some may prefer a more manicured pitch.
There's a great farm shop selling quality local produce including local beers and great bread - the shop takes card payment over £10. The site has recently installed a new shower block where showers are free. You can also use the other (older, shabbier) shower block which charges 50p. The site also has a small cafe / bar overlooking a landscaped lawn which was very busy with kids and adults having a great time playing outdoor games. There is hot water for washing up. Yes the loos are a little bit 'cobwebby' but hey - this is camping!
The only downside I would mention are the limited number of basins for personal washing / brushing your teeth: just two for all the ladies in the campsite (not sure how many were in the gents). A minor gripe on what is a great campsite. We will definitely return.

Just came back from our 1st camping trip with our frame tent. This site is a little piece of heaven. In an unspoilt setting with views to die for the site has everything the camper needs.
Yes the grass is long but with the sandy soil I fear if it were mown the pitches would end up like sand baths. The new showers are very nice just lack a soap dish small criticism.
The toilets are a little primitive but hey its a campsite plenty of wash up areas. The veranda cafe is fantastic the food is really nice small select menu,we had 2 pints of the local beer which was fantastic.
The only thing the site lacked was a baby room to change and wash a baby. But we coped with washing my 9 month old in the wash up bowl back at the tent. The village of win is gorgeous and the kings arms is well worth a visit 10 min walk from the site.
We didn't eat there but the setting and the beer are out of this world. We only live 20miles away and it was a lovely break we cant wait for our next visit.

Lovely location and very close to rutland water.
A few warnings though, we were put in field 3 very close to chicken houses, lots of chickens wandering around and they can be a nuisance we had them in our tent on a few occasions and they were a pest at meal times.
Several cockerels around as well, ok if you like an early start. Pitch was very sloped and grass quite long.
Noise curfew of 10pm not observed or enforced plenty of noisy children around well after 10, which caused us problems getting our 2 year old to sleep. New showers ok and farm shop nice.

Our first camping trip was spent over two night in late June at Wing Hall, so we were excited (and a little bit worried) as we pulled into the drive of the site. Check-in was quick and very easy, and a bottle of (the inevitably forgotten but BBQ staple) brown sauce was purchased at the well-stocked shop.
We were given a choice of two pitches, and we were shown a map so chose the one away from the road, in field 3. We parked up next to the pitch post and found an insane number of chickens running all over our tent as we put it up!
I'd have to agree with previous reviews about the length of the grass - far too long and did a bang up job of concealing the chicken poop that was, frankly, everywhere! Don't get me wrong, chickens running around are great, but when you're cooking and flaking out outside shooing them out of the tent every five minutes gets a bit tiresome. Not to mention cockerel competitions at 4AM!
On the plus side, the village pub is very nice (if a little pricey), as is the farm shop. No other facilities that we could find in the village. Can't comment on the veranda restaurant as we didn't eat there - prefering our own cooking.
Washing up facilities spot on, never had to wait. Toilets adequate, though Sunday morning several people were complaining about the state of the block nearest the hall. Didn't use the showers due to having to fork out 50p for 1 minute - instead filled the washing up bowl with hot water and rinsed off.
Be warned - when we called to book we were told that Rutland Water was only a mile away - being newbies we didn't check. It's actually 3 miles away and quite a trek! Also - we didn't have the nipper with us but there's not a playground or anything to occupy the kids. There are signs everywhere saying no children in field 3 but there were families with children camping there. Not a problem to us - but worth bearing in mind!
All in all we wouldn't return but considering we're not off camping for life it's not all bad!

When you first arrive, you drive down a Lime Tree Avenue which opens out to the impressive stately home of Wing Hall. When we first arrived, we checked in at the farm shop / reception to a warm welcome(from the Lady of the house). It cost us £13 per night for 2 of us. The farm shop is very well stocked with basics and luxuries like bread from the Hambleton Bakery, local beers & ciders, etc.
There are 3 fields and we were designated a pitch in the field with the rest of the families. Which were spaced out evenly so noise from neighbours kids wasn't a problem. There is another field for caravans and tents wanting electric hook ups and another field which seemed to have groups in. Everyone abided by the 10pm noise rules. Our only moan was the long grass had been cut in our field but had missed out a strip where our 2 pitches were.
The showers were hot and worth the 50p. Some of the showers were out of order as they were being renovated but were open the next day. The toilets were clean and adequate with a few cobwebs but hey I've seen worse and this is camping after all.
We were supposed to cook on Friday night but I managed to convince the missus to eat in the Veranda cafe bar (in the hall) on the pretence that I wouldn't be able to leave a proper review without trying the food. The food was very reasonable priced and very excellent.
The Verada cafe bar does everything from breakfasts to cream teas and is set at the front of the house overlooking the lawn with its seating area. Which was lovely being sat outside on a warm summers evening looking out over the surrounding area. The bar had a good selection of local beers and a good wine list. And the chickens and geese wandering about the place all add to the charm.
For shops and supplies there is Oakham and a big Co-op(on the B668)just outside of Oakham. The area is good for cycling and walking. There are nature reserves(a couple of miles away)where you can see breeding Ospreys. You have Rutland Water for watersports / sailing. A lovely campsite set in beautiful countryside.

This is a lovely site, and we have visited this site on two occasions. The birdlife is wonderful with Ospreys on Rutland water, Nighingales at Hambleton wood in May and Red kites and buzzards soaring over the hills.
The pitches on this site are very reasonably priced and it has its own bar and restaurant.
There is a pub in the village, literally 5 mins walk. The pitches were levelish; the showers and toilets very clean. There were plenty of country pubs around the area too. It's in easy reach of Rutland water. Oakham is a nice village with all the shops you need.
If there are any negatives, you need to book your pitch and select your pitch well in advance, otherwise you can be given a pitch in the bottom field, where the pitches are sloping and you are likely to get your car stuck in the mud if it rains.
We shall definitely return.

Set in pretty countryside an unusual campsite. It was really busy on bank holiday weekend, which meant it had a nice atmosphere, but not that we had 'got away from it all'. The new shop is lovely, and being able to buy fresh bread in the morning is lovely.
The showers were fine, although very small and no where to leave your clothes while you got changed. The toilets are OK, but it is quite basic. Fortunately we didn't cook breakfast on the Sunday, the queue for washing up was very long.
I don't think there was a specific children's play area, and the shop and cafe meant there was a reasonable amount of traffic in front of the house.

Spent a very hot weekend in May at this site, the weather and location made for a very enjoyable weekend.
There is plenty of room for games etc. And the relaxed attitude of the owners ensured that even with a couple of teenage lads and a 12 year old in tow a great time was had by all.
Downside of this site are the facilities which were totally inadequate and quite frankly dirty. Insufficient toilets and showers for a site of this size.
The farm shop is great, the Veranda cafe is ok, on the weekend we were there the service was poor as was the choice of drinks, which would have been fine if the menu had been updated.
Overall I could see what the owners are trying to achieve, but at present with the exception of the shop they are falling short. No doubt this will improve once the facilities are to an acceptable level and the cafe staff understand what service is.
Would I return. No
