We really enjoyed our 5 day stay. Although over their busiest time facilities were never overcrowded. Not too manicured but that and the chickens added to its charm We hired a fire pit. The shop is much more extensive than many. The Verandah Cafe is useful for simple lunches. Meals can be a bit hit and miss. Wonderful pub in Wing itself and Rutland Water offers endless opportunities for many varied activities. We intend to return.

What an amazing place! This is a campsite with great individual character! As it was the middle of the week we (the children and I) got the choice of which field we would like to camp in - with the chickens or by the climbing tree and swings. Chickens do roam free throughout which is great to see close up but if you don't want them joining you at mealtimes don't encourage them! Facilities were functioning with plenty of hot water and served their purpose, (though I probably wouldn't use the communal fridge freezer until it's had a good clean!)
Farm shop full of useful stuff and the Veranda Café was superb, the Rocky Road or should that be Mountain Treat was to die for! Great views from café and surrounding site, we took our bikes to explore the area, though Wing Hall do offer bikes and helmets to hire. Local village is beautiful with a fantastic pub 'The King's Arm' offering great food! Cycling to Rutland Water is just over a mile away, so perfect if you have plans to walk/cycle around the area.

Our experience of wing hall is not that great! we were placed in field 3. Where the chicken house's are! The field was uneven and covered in chicken poo. The toilets are well maintained and clean!, The washing up area is covered in chicken poo and very smelly, either drainage or chickens! The grass is long, which makes it hard to spot chicken poo very difficult! Was planning on staying for 2 days but after one day and being covered in chicken poo from the ( must be over 100 chickens) was glad to get out of the health hazzord!

We have just had the best couple of days camping in a long time.
Wing Hall is only 30 minutes from where we live but we wanted somewhere close by to make a regular getaway.
We arrived on Saturday just after some horrendous rain which made the track through the site quite tricky due to people not being experienced at driving off road. The pitch markings were a little confusing as there are older and newer markers. Once we had established our pitches we set up our tents, 2 large 6 berth tents, which took up almost all of both pitches. 1 car was parked near the tents while the other was parked near the house.
There was a small toilet block within 10-15 meters of our pitch and the main toilet block was not much further away. They were clean and tidy and stocked with toilet roll, even with the horrid rain, they were still clean.
The shop was filled with amazing local produce and the prices were not too high.
There is no play area for the children but our 2 and 4 year olds were busy all the time playing with other children and 'herding' the chickens or visiting the pigs and horse or climbing trees or collecting fire wood.
In the evenings it was great to look along the line of tents and seeing all of the families sitting around wood burners with their neighbours.
All in all it was an amazing few days, very back to nature, and rustic, but stunning views, nature all around and a really sociable family camp site that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys the outside and is not looking for glitz and glam and a club house.

Wing is a small village and civil parish in the smallest of our English counties, namely Rutland. It lies to the south and within a stone's throw of the popular Rutland Water. It has a good variety of buildings, many of them constructed in the 17th century in local Clipsham stone, which glows a mellow tone in the sunshine. The Kings Arms pub lies a short walk from Wing Hall, along a shortcut; a footpath which emerges in the pub car park. Beyond that, Wing boasts only a church and village hall, but its sleepy nature is a great source of its appeal. The camp site reflects this environment with a no-music policy. We found it worked well, with little or no noise after dark.
Wing Hall itself resides on a family owned estate. The imposing Victorian country house dominates the estate, which is found at the end of a tree-lined avenue serving as its entrance. It was built between 1885 and 1891 by Edward Worrall. His family found fortune in a method of dying velvet which flourished at their Ordsall Dyeworks in Salford. The house now serves as a venue for the wonderful bunting clad Veranda Café (www. Verandacafe. Co. Uk) offering fine food as well as soft and alcoholic drinks, the newer of the camper's showers and a farm shop, stocking the usual edible fayre together with barbecues and essentials the forgetful camper might have neglected to bring with them.
The surrounding grounds are somewhat diminished in acreage since their heyday, but ample nevertheless. The buildings have a ramshackle air of decaying empire about them, which I found all the more telling. It lends a sense that the family are striving to hold onto their fine Victorian ancestral pile, a struggle which they've not quite yet managed to conquer. No doubt, continued hard work, welcoming disposition and investment will prevail. Others describe the appearance less kindly as scruffy, but in my view, this description would be better left reserved for the camper's facilities. More on that later.
We returned after our first visit three years ago to the promise of lots of improvements to look forward to. On our arrival, we found the main entrance and field 1, closed as a safety measure for tree maintenance, but only for the first day or so. A number of rotten limbs had to be removed and the tree surgeon was to be blamed for the delays. As safety is no. 1 priority, we didn't consider this to be a great inconvenience. As a result, we were directed to field 4, behind the house to pitch our tents, but within easy reach of its facilities. It is a sloping field without EHU, divided into rows of pitches for campers. The grass was long and at the edges, ran into nettles which had recently been cut. However, the views to the south over patchwork rolling hills forgave this shortcoming, although it was interrupted by the significant remains of a large apple tree which had failed to burn in a bonfire in front of us. Why was this not cleared away?
During our visit we took the opportunity at the Veranda Café to sample both the cream teas and the beer (although not at the same time) from the local Grainstore Brewery, both of which I can highly recommend, together with the polite and welcoming service.
The one thing we're struggling to recommend are the showers, washing facilities and toilets. The facilities appear to have evolved over a number of years, with more and more being added at the minimum possible cost. The result is a collection of disjointed and disconnected facilities, which really do not sit well, juxtaposed to the grandeur of the Hall. For those of us in need of a wet shave, we found hot water lacking at the basins, which were small in number and in a separate area from the shower cubicles. The hot water at the showers seemed to be turned off at 10am as my shower one morning at that time was as cold as a cold water tap gets, having stood and watched steaming condensation pour around the door from the previous occupants ablutions. Needless to say, I didn't return at that time of day again. Those wanting to wash dirty dishes at the provided facilities will have to be patient too. In my experience, the majority of the taps at the sinks do nothing more than dribble tepid water in the general direction of the bowl.
In all honesty, we found things to be much as they were three years ago. We left struggling to think what the lauded improvements were. Certainly bike hire is now available, which I think was missing during our first visit. The cafe, farm shop, showers, toilets and basins are all as they were as far as I can recall. At £8 per person per night, I think the price is about right, but would be fully justified with better integrated washing facilities. The shortcomings I've highlighted, wouldn't stop us from returning but after two long weekends at Wing, we will look for somewhere new for next time. If I had to recommend just one thing to the owners, it would be this: please sort out the cleaning and washing facilities and Wing Hall camping would be transformed from a jewel into a priceless gem.
Further afield, the town of Oakham can be reached in about 10 minutes by car. It offers numerous restaurants, a Tesco and Wilkinsons plus a number of pubs. Uppingham is also within easy reach and boasts the India Cottage Restaurant (www. Indiacottage. Biz tel: 01572 822031 and 01572 822034) providing free delivery to the camp site for orders over a certain amount. The Horse and Jockey at Manton is within a mile or so from the camp site and is very close to Rutland Water and therefore popular in the summer, particularly with cyclists and consequently becomes very busy. Nevertheless, both the food and beer are highly recommended if you're prepared to wait. We found numerous walks around the area, avoiding this time the reservoir at the weekend, owing to its popularity and in particular, the large number of cyclists, pinging bells (and sometimes not) on their approach behind us. Rutland with its Water is a beautiful part of the world to enjoy and you'd be hard pushed to beat the Wing Hall location.

Very good farm shop - perhaps not ideal though for camping.
Cycle hire useful, cafe and bar a plus point.
Short walk to very nice pub.
Toilets scattered around site, very old, poorly signed and few in number. Showers even less evident. Electricity on pay card.
1 Elsan point for whole site.
Water points limited.
Site basic, muddily, poor access.

Have visited Wing Hall regularly this year for weekend breaks. There is plenty of open space and a good choice of pitches for our Tent. The Toilet and Shower facilities are a little basic and were busy at peak times. Whilst generally clean they would benefit from more regular maintenance.
The Staff on site are very friendly and the Farm Shop is well stocked and means you do not have to leave the Campsite for provisions. Eggs are fresh having been 'produced' by the free range Hens which roam around the Campsite. The Cockerel is an early bird so you do not need and alarm clock either!
The Veranda Bar is a bonus providing meals from breakfast through to dinner. A good choice of alcoholic drinks is also available and when we were there live entertainment was on the Saturday and very good.
We like this site as it is family friendly and is close to the local attractions such as Rutland Water which can be easily accessed on foot or by bike.

Just stayed at this site for the second time (last time was Sept 2009) and returned because of the convenience of the location to Rutland Water - we knew what to expect with the facilities.
We were in Field 4 which felt like an overflow field, with long grasses/wildflowers with mown strips to pitch in. It was sloping and very rough underfoot (thistles, weeds, twigs etc) however only a short walk to the (older) toilets and showers adjacent to the main house/verandah cafe. Yes, the facilities are on the “rustic” side with cobwebs, mud, leaves but they are relatively open to the elements so this is to be expected – this is camping as it always used to be, not glamping. We had a lukewarm shower on the Saturday but a hot one on the Sunday – however they were free. Two of our party who are new to camping declined to shower.
Our friends sampled the farm shop which was apparently very well stocked. They also had breakfast in the Veranda Cafe which I am told was disappointing and overpriced.
The boys in our party fished on the Saturday at Wing Lakes – which comprised two lakes; one of which was very overgrown with lily pads, the other lake seemed to be mostly stocked with small fish.
We cycled round Rutland Water, the site is only about 1½ miles from the cycle path and easily reached on bike from Wing by bridleway/quiet roads. The Horse & Jockey at Manton is “bike friendly” and a good place stop for beer/food.
We didn’t have any interaction with the staff except via email (our friends arrived first and checked us in), we’d arranged an early check-in at time of booking and had no issues. The staff were very relaxed about check-out time.
All in all, an ideal location with adequate facilities for a weekend break. Having read numerous reviews for other sites in the area, Wing Hall would appear to be one of the better sites! We will be returning.

A site with so much potential, but lacking a little basic care and attention. On arrival the check in was polite and the facilities were explained clearly. However we soon found that EHU numbers did not correspond to pitch numbers, the promised Saturday night music had vanished, the Portacabin-based toilets were unkempt and not adequately maintained with soap dispensers and toilet roll holders empty etc, dirty floors, and much the same story in the crudely built showers which varied in temperature whether you paid 50p or not. Not a single visit from staff in our 4 night stay to check all was well. Veranda cafe expensive but the nearby pub served very nice food. Lovely views and countryside around and we visited Burghley House, Oakham Castle (not really a castle) and Rockingham Castle (really a castle) all of which were excellent. Unfortunately until Wing Hall get their act together with a purpose-built shower and toilet block we won't be back.

Fantastic site, only spoilt by selfish people, all the toilets were clean, but were left wet or dirty by others, it doesn't take a lot to flush a toilet, or wipe urine from a seat.
Had a hot shower, despite other peoples comments, you just have to run the water for a while.
The squeegees were a blessing, pity others didn't use them.
Really good wash up facilities as well.
Had 3 extremely quiet nights, before 'regular campers' arrived for the weekend, and ignored the no noise after 10. 30 rule.
The goose and chickens were a nice bonus for a nature lover.
Despite my comments I would thoroughly recommend this site to people looking for a proper campsite, with the bonus of good facilities
