Visited here for the second time to introduce a friend to camping UK style.

Once again, it didn't disappoint in the slightest. The introduction to site was superb and left nothing to question, the sites were well laid out, and facilities were superb (though we did have to forsake a shower on the saturday morning due to it being busy, and the shower then going cold).

Being able to have a fire is a nice touch in this day and age, and the site provide their own at a very reasonable rate of £5 per bag (purely to ensure people don't raid the adjoining ancient woodlands).

The site is close to the Uffington WHite Horse (well it's literally at the foot of the hill) and

is ideal for walks and little trips out to the local sights and towns.

There's a nice atmosphere here, and the owners have done all they can to ensure that a full camping experience is available, including a little cafe for cream teas and pancakes.

Great site, great value (£6 per adult per night at time of writing) and brilliantly laid back and safe for the kids.

We spent three nights at this beautiful campsite and will definitely visit again. We booked in advance by post and got a very friendly phone call to confirm the booking.

Although some of the ground is on quite a slope, there was plenty of room to choose a pitch, and a choice of fields. As we had young children in our group, we chose to pitch in the 'family' field, where there was a large grassy space for the children to play safely. The campsite has a very friendly informal atmosphere, and the highlight for us was the nightly campfires, complete with full moon and crystal clear skies for stargazing.

Although the site 'rules' which were given to us when we arrived clearly asked people to keep the noise down after 22.30, there was a large group near us who were very noisily celebrating until well after midnight one night. Luckily the next night, the torrential rain prevented a repeat performance! It was a shame that this group was put in the same field as people with very young children, as there was plenty of space in the larger field on the opposite side of the road.

However, campsites are noisy places, so we wouldn't let this one incident spoil our memories of a wonderful break with a real sense of freedom and relaxation.

On a practical note, the loos and showers were kept reasonably clean and were regularly checked, there's a fridge and freezer for campers to use, and the washing up facilities were basic but fine.

Here you have a lovely camp site, in a beautiful setting. Enter: the facilities. I went for a shower with my 4 year old son. There was one small hook in the shower. Wet floor of course, and a bin. Tell me, where do our towels go? Jackets? Clothes?

What would it take to put say 4 hooks up, or, lets be really mad and go for 10 hooks (£10 to the campsite owners?). Then, everything could stay off the floor and one could have an enjoyable shower. (yes, warm water did run out - not a lot, but it was warm).

What about putting say, 1 sink up close to the 1 tap in each field? Then, you could wash dishes (water does not have to be hot even) without having to walk 10 minutes each way with a load of dishes to the main building.

It really frustrates me when with just a little work camping could be so much more enjoyable. It seems that some English campsites do their very best to be as basic as possible, without being particularly cheap.

The site is made up of several fields, I was in Ash Tree. This is a long gently sloping field on the lower slopes of White Horse Hill. The road passes the bottom end of the field, but it is a small road and I did not find traffic noise to be an issue at all.

The field was well kept, with sound sheep fencing all around. There are two water points, one at the top and one at the bottom near the entrance. Also at the entrance are the loos. These are the portaloo type, and there is a bank of them, maybe eight? Each of the fields has its own supply of portaloos.

The loos are fine for their designed purpose, but are not much good for having a wash or even cleaning your teeth, however, it's not that kind of campsite.

The campsites main appeal for me was that it was fairly basic. This suited me down to the ground as, generally, this tends to scare off the families with hoards of screaming kids. I apologise to all you parents out there, but I do not enjoy being surrounded by children, so this is a personal choice for me.

The owners do permit dogs, and I took mine with me. He was tethered the whole time and so was not any interference to anyone else. It is good to be able to take the dog, and there was no additional charge for him. I would not have minded if there had been.

Near to the farmhouse itself (several hundred yards away) there is a shower block. It is very basic, but nevertheless, it is there, and again there is no additional charge. A small fridge is available for that half packet of sausages or your butter, and proper toilets. There is also provision of a washing up sink here.

Apart from the shower, I did not find it necessary to use any of these facilities myself.

The young man who welcomed me on my arrival was very helpful and pleasant, and after that my only encounter with the owners were the daily visits from the farm Land Rover asking if I wanted any firewood.

This site is very unusual in that they permit real campfires, although there are strict rules to be adhered to, which include only burning their own wood which they sell you each day. It sounds like a money spinner, but to be fair, if you burn poor quality firewood it spits and crackles and can be a hazard, particularly around tents!

Nearby facilities. Well, there is an excellent pub, called The White Horse, in Woolstone, maybe 20 minutes on foot to get there. The food is good, albeit a bit dear, and they are very welcoming. Dogs are accepted on a lead, and there is a small but pleasant garden too.

The village of Uffington, similar distance, has a small Post Office store which has all sorts of provisions. Larger towns are a trip in the car.

At weekends and on Bank Holidays you can get a cream team at the farmhouse itself, which was very good, although they make very wishy-washy coffee. There is also a pancake house which was open on the Saturday morning.

Nearby attractions. Well, this is an area full of ancient sites of interest, and a short (uphill) walk takes you to the oldest road in Britain. The Ridgeway. Head West along it and you will quickly come across the Iron Age Hill Fort known as Uffington Castle, the beautiful chalk cutting of The White Horse, said to be around 3000 years old, and further along you will find the serene burial ground known as Waylands Smithy.

This area is rightly protected by law as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it certainly is some of the loveliest countryside we have inmy view. To have all this on your tent doorstep makes for a great holiday if you are a countryside lover. If you want bells and whistles, then Blackpool is probably more your thing.

Negatives - better shower facilities would have been welcome, there were a lot of people staying over the weekend that I was there (although weekdays I was completely alone) and it was a challenge finding an opportunity, but I wasn't that bothered to be honest.

The Ash Tree site was adjacent to a small wooded area and I can only assume that there were wasps nesting in there, as I was constantly bothered by them during daylight hours. At one point I had to abandon a cola I had poured as there were atleast fifty wasps all desperate to share it with me. This is not good, and next time I visit I will ensure I take some kind of repellant with me. Wasp stings are very painful, and I was lucky to only get one in the five days I was there. If you are going here, please be aware of this. Having spoken to others, it does seem to be a perennial problem at the site.

The only other issue was that of helicopters. I don't know if this is a regular thing, or if there was some kind of exercise taking place, but low flying helicopters (looked like forces ones) buzzing the site up til about 11.30pm I did find rather intrusive. Like the wasps, not the fault of the site owners at all, but nevertheless, it was there.

Overall, this is an absolute gem of a campsite, and I defy you not to love it and the lovely landscape in which it is set. And all for only six quid per person, per night.

Thanks, Britchcombe. I will definitely be back.

As I have lived near this farm for all my life I had never actually camped on the site, Despite knowing the area well and of course the Ridgeway and White horse. We stayed for two nights with Niece,Nephew who were both under 12 and only camped on a rare occasion. The field I pitched in was under the white horse the field is massive and lovely views they have 3 other fields which are just as nice. The first night we stayed was very busy in the whole field and people below us we rather noisy on the night! The facilities they provide are basic but enough for what you require as we are camping the toilets we used we kept clean at all times and having our own camp fire makes it extra special. They provide the wood that you have to buy at a responsible price.

The weather was in our favour for the few days we stayed here.

I would personally recommenced Britchcombe Farm to anyone despite living so close its a lovely get away. Planning to stay again in the next few weeks again.

This was our first ever camping trip (on recumbent trikes) previous reviews had us a little concerned re 'basic facilities', nothing to worry about, as everything was clean and checked frequently.

Small fridge/freezer to put our wine etc in helped tremendously, the showers were very controllable, clean and reasonably non slip

upon check in we met the lady who makes this site(s) (several fields) so tremendously welcoming, the footpath to the pub (badly signed) was peopled by cows and killer rabbit holes (remember this is THE countryside).

Marks for the site, views, facilities and welcome are all 10, we shall be going back.

We have just returned from a two night stay at this site. When we arrived we received a friendly welcome and were given site details and a rubbish bag. As it was so busy we were already allocated a field to pitch in but could choose any spot in that field. We were directed to Ash camp which although the field was busy there was enough space to allow for privacy and give spectacular views across the countryside.

We had initial reservations over the portable chemical toilets which were provided in each field, however I have to say they were cleaner and more inviting than many brick built ones I have used. It was busy but the toilets were sufficient for the numbers present. Just remember to take your torch with you as there are no lights in the toilets.

The showers and dishwashing are located by the main farm building which is quite a way from some of the pitches and neither of which were adequate for a busy weekend. We had a long wait for showers which when we did get in you had the choice of power and cold water or a trickle of warm water, although they were fairly clean. I had to wait twice for the dishwashing area and was not able to get hot water.

The real winner for this site it that you are encouraged to have campfires. Wood is delivered every evening at £5 per bag but you must have a bucket of water handy just in case.

We had two adults and two children (aged 14 & 16) and therefore had to pay the adult price for three and half price for the 14 year old. So by the time we had bought a bag of wood this adds up to £26.00 per night, which I feel is a lot in relation to the facilities offered.

There are some super walks around and places for the children to fly kites. There is also a well recommended pub which serves food nearby but we didn't visit so cannot comment. For a little trip out Wantage is worth a visit, there is a Sainsburys and Waitrose as well as other nice shops to look round, there was also a small market in the town square on the Saturday we were there.

I probably would come again but at a quieter time or when the children have lost interest so it works out a bit cheaper, but its certainly not a bad site.

Our first camping experience with kids, having camped as a couple for years. We chose a campsite near home (within 1 hour drive) to allow for if things went pear-shaped!

Absolutely brilliant site. We stayed at the weekend, the weather was stunning and the kids had a ball. The loos were clean, and though we only found two showers to use, they were adequate for our needs.

A communal fridge was handy for those of us without electricity.

Being allowed a campfire was great and the fact the the logs are supplied to the door of the tent a bonus!

One of my fave campsites this year.

Just spent the weekend on this great site set in a valley with rolling hills and breath taking views.

We only live 10 miles away and decided to have a cheap weekend away that wasn't far to get away and boy what a great site we found.

We arrived at 10am and we could check in straight away which was great as we could make the most of the first day.

The owner checked us in and she was very friendly and helpful, she gave us a small black bag and a welcome pack and said we could pitch up where ever we wanted.

We had a caravan and there is only 1 field for power which is on a slope however there are plenty of flat bricks / rocks to use for the legs.

This field was perfect for us as we have a little baby and we were right next door to the reception, toilet / shower blocks and the cream tea / pancake hut, however we noticed that our field was the only field that had the washing up area and showers for all the other fields (some fields are a bit of a drive). This turned our field into a car park for some campers who drove to the shower block or use the washing up area. This was probably the only down point but it really wasn't an issue for us as it was nice to people watch

The toilet block in the caravan field was uni-sex and set behind he washing up area and so was a little un-private during busy times.

The site is a working farm and so has farmyard animals for the kids which was great, you also have a cream tea room on weekends from 3-6pm and a pancake hut from 9-12pm which was fantastic.

The campsite is a great place for a break as you can have open fires and all the fields have plenty of open space for the kids to play all day in safe grounds.

The B4057 does run in between the fields but its a minor road and didn't cause us any issues with noise or safety.

White Horse hill is right around the corner and Uffington Castle is just under the hill and a great walk with great views.

The Village of Uffington is also a nice walk away with Ridgeway path Access all around the campsite.

Campsite also provides recycle bins so remember to separate rubbish.

Great weekend and we are going back next weekend for another short break

We were 2 families with 2 year olds camping for one night. We had a warm welcome and informed about the cream tea (delicious!) and the basic camp info.

We were then directed towards Ash Tree and were a bit taken back by the very very sloping fields! We've done a lot of camping and have never seen tents pitched on such big slopes! How they managed to stay in place in the night, I'll never know! We found a fairly flat bit but that meant being near the loos - a bit noisy at night but generally OK. The loos were fairly clean but lights and a hook would be very helpful. We didn't even bother to explore the showers as we were a good walk away. The field was large and so there was plenty of room for us all to play games and the little ones to run around.

Being allowed/encouraged to have a fire was refreshing and so we all enjoyed that.

The setting is beautiful and its a lovely walk up onto the White Horse. The children loved being able to enjoy the farm - the chickens (watch for electric fence!) and tractors!

During our sat night stay the one BIG problem we had was NOISE! It was very very noisy with music and chat until the wee small hours and so sleep was a big problem. There were several large groups camped together which were probably the noise-makers! We have enjoyed camping in a big group before and so its nice that its allowed in some sites but being in earshot was not easy.

We heard that this site has been listed as in the top 5 in the country! We were amazed! I'm not sure we'd go back again (maybe just a day trip for another cream tea!) - there are soo many lovely sites that are as nice and much nicer than this one. (My other half says I'm being a bit harsh so we have differing opinions on this!)
