We chose this site based on several factors, the excellent reviews, it's proximity to London (as we needed to set up the tent in the dark on a Friday night after work) and the fact we could have a proper campfire.
We arrived around 7.30pm, we had emailed ahead to see if it was fine to arrive without booking, and Marcella from the Farm rang and confirmed it was fine.
We met Marcella at her home, she gave us wood for the fire, fresh free-range eggs and showed us the loos and showers, and then directed us to the site.
There are four sites, and we stayed in Sheeplands. We drove around the field (it is across the road from the farm) and selected a corner pitch for it's proximity to the water tap and two patches where there had been fires previously. There were two portaloos in the middle of the field, and not another soul other than an abundance of rabbits!
We set up quickly and got a cracking fire going, a bag of wood is £5, you would need at least two for a fire for a couple of hours.
The next day, the weather was lovely. The site in daylight was picturesque and plenty of birds around (robins, pheasants etc) plus you can hear the animals and the tractor from the farm - good country sounds.
The toilet block back at the farm is basic, two loo cubicles with a little wash basin in each, fine to go in and get a wash, plus a big butler's sink for washing dishes. There is also a fridge/freezer for the use of the campers. We didn't use the showers.
We walked up to the Uffington Chalk horse, there are many footpaths leading to and from the campsite and we stopped at two pubs, the White Horse in Woolstone, and then the Fox and Hounds in Uffington. There is a tiny shop in Uffington for basics.
Everyone was so friendly! We saw a pony and trap and plenty of equestrian activities in this area. John Betjeman's house is in Uffington. If you had to point a tourist to a quintessential English village/ area, then Woolstone would be the one, thatched cottages galore!
Back at the site, two more tents arrived but very quiet and we still had peace.
The next day Marcella came around to see us and we got a big hug from her, she is a true Brit, 82 and lugging big bags of firewood around. She runs a lovely farm and made us so welcome we cannot recommend this place enough. I think it would be very busy in high season, so packing up lots of warm clothing and bedding and going whilst it was quiet was a good idea.

We discovered Britchcombe farm quite by accident but are extremely glad we did! Just over an hour and a half from home it is ideal for a weekend camping trip. This summer saw us camping at Britchcombe four or five times and we have fallen in love with the magical Vale of the White Horse and the campsite run by Marcella, a wonderful lady who has lived in the farmhouse for many years. We agree with other campers on this review that if you require pristine facilities, hook up facilities in every field and a fully stocked shop and club then don't come here! This is a basic campsite with adequate showers and clean portaloos in every field. I can see that the road separating the fields from the main facilities could be drawback for those families with children but with common sense this should not be a problem. The wonder of this campsite is its magical location nestling in the Vale of the White Horse and sitting below Dragon Hill in all its prehistoric wonder. Uffington is lovely village just 10 minutes away offering a good pub with wonderful views over the White Horse and a little museum celebrating the life of Thomas Hughes, the author of Tom Brown's Schooldays. You can see the house where John Betjeman lived for 12 years and, if she has time, Marcella will tell you how he taught her to read poetry!.
There is firewood and all the other items necessary for a good fire delivered to your tent every night plus, if you need it, instructions on how to light it! Despite other campers reviews, we have found Marcella and her staff to be extremely helpful and kind and we have been astounded by her energy and commitment in making this a campsite that people will enjoy and return to. On speaking to other campers they have returned time after time and speak highly of this place.
Despite appearing in the list of the 'Telegraph' top twenty campsites there is always space to camp and Marcella will try and put families away from adults although personally there is something great about seeing children enjoying themselves in a back to basics way, flying kites, playing cricket, singing round a camp fire, walking up to dragon hill and generally enjoying a family holiday!
We will return to Britchcombe again and only hope that this magical place will remain the same.Oh and by the way, don't even think of leaving on Sunday without sampling a cream tea at the farmhouse!

A good site with adequate (ie. Bare minimum facilities - which is what camping's all about). Easy to find and some good field walking to be had. If the owners catch you in the woods trying to forage fuel for your fire you'll be told off - they make extra cash by selling you their own firewood, which comes from the place where you've been looking.
Lots of space. The White Horse is a ten minute walk and another fifteen to get to the top. The nearest pub is a twenty minute walk (I think). Families, kids, dogs - it's all good.
They give you a bucket of water to throw on your fire as a precaution.
The reception is helpful and all in all I'd say this is a good site in the middle of the country and one of the best that's farthest from the sea.

I guess this would be the campsite that our boys enjoyed most this summer - due mainly to the ongoing 12 hour football game each day (eat breakfast, play, go for walk, play, pub lunch, play etc). It's a pretty basic set-up, but everyone was extremely friendly on the field that we stayed in and the kids all just cruised in and out of each other's tents.
Showers and washing up facilities leave a bit to be desired. I wasn't that keen on having to queue for a single sink for all campers - or indeed having fellow campers using loos in the same room as the washing up.
But, it's not dirty, it's cheap, and having firewood, kindling and rope (extraordinary how quickly a fire gets going with a bit of baler-twine!) delivered daily to your tent is just great.
The area is stunning for walks and pubs that you can get to on excellent footpaths - straight out of the bottom of the field. Overall a wonderful place and we'll definitely return.

Just returned from a rather blowy Bank Holiday weekend spent camping at Britchcombe.
The location is absolutely stunning with gorgeous views in all directions. You are in a lovely rural spot but within easy driving distance of shops etc, and a pub about 1.5 miles down the road.
We received no directions to find the site and it is poorly signposted, the staff were not very welcoming when we arrived but did prove to be more friendly on other occasions. There were four fields open; as the previous review said these slope quite sharply in places but there were plenty of flat pitches and the slope meant that the fields were not chockablock with tents so there was plenty of green space. The site is rather exposed and did get very windy.
Our field had four portaloos which were well kept - on such a busy weekend it was inevitable that they were not pristine (mud everywhere!), but pleasant enough to use. The showers and washing up however were really showing the strain. Note that there is *one* washing up sink for the whole site which covers four large fields. Fine if you are happy to wash up at your tent but don't go expecting lots of washing up stations.
The showers also were not up to the number of visitors and were very wet and muddy by mid afternoon. The cubicles are very small and awkward for trying to get kids clean. Plenty of very hot water though at all times of day and showers themselves kept nicely clean. As previous reviews have noted, it is a walk along a fast and twisty road to the shower block and quite nerve-wracking with young children as cars appear very fast round the corners.
We wandered around the farmyard but didn't see any evidence of the animals mentioned on the blurb.
The campfires were a fantastic treat and the owners tour the site several times in the evening checking all is OK, delivering wood etc. They always arrived just as our wood was getting low which was a great service - £5 for a bag of logs plus some kindling.
I imagine this site has been a victim of its own success this year, as they have had two write-ups in the national press recommending them. The problems we had with the site seemed mainly to be caused by how busy they were - overstretched staff, overused facilities. On a quiet weekend in June without the hoardes it is probably idyllic. Just bring your own washing up bowl.

The site at first was disappointing as when we arrived there was a huge and I mean huge skip at the entrance to the farm overflowing with rubbish and rubbish on the ground all around. All the recycling bins were also full. The paddock where caravans or tents wanting hookups was quite sloping and we were fortunate that we could pitch down the bottom as we would have never of got the caravan up the slope as the field was very muddy. The facilities were ok, we quite liked the porta-showers as there was plenty of space to deal with children. The washing up facilities were basic, only one sink and not that clean. I am not sure how often the showers got cleaned as our rubbish was still there four days later. The road was quite worrying as if a car lost control, we would be wiped out. We didn't get to see the owner until the day we left. Lovely pub at Woolstone called the White Horse, great food and beer. We went to Ashdown House (NT) which was really interesting and good walking in the woods and upto weathercock hill. The White Horse Hill is worth the climb even in the pouring rain! I think this site could be fantastic with a few alterations and planning.

It took several attempts to get a response from this site's owner and the owner's attitude also could have been friendlier - she was quite brusque and gave the impression that contacting potential customers put her out somewhat.
The directions to the site were also a bit vague. (If you come from Uffington village, turn left when you reach the T junction at the top of road!).
Having said all this, the site is beautiful. Set over 3 separate fields - which are certainly not flat, but give enough room to find a flat camping ground - and a paddock, it was very peaceful with loads of room for campers, who, for the 2 nights we were there, were all very friendly. Families should beware, if they are staying in one of the 3 camping fields, that you do have to walk along and / or cross the main road which runs along the base of White Horse hill to reach the main facilities located by the farm buildings. It's a reasonably quiet road, but it is national speed limit, so when vehicles do appear they do so at a frightening pace!
It should be noted that good portaloo facilities are available in each of the fields and a cold water tap, so you're not constantly going backwards and forwards to the farm buildings. The facilities in the farm buildings were excellent - very good showers and hot water at no extra cost, + a lovely big belfast sink for doing your washing.
The lovely paddock is located in front of the house and facilities, but as this is used for cream teas on the weekend you can't have campfires in this area. It's more for vans and hook-ups than tents, although we were offered to camp here if we wished.
The fact that you can have campfires was the main reason we went to stay at this site. Mrs Seymour sells firewood at £5 a bag and can deliver it to your tent when she does her Range Rover rounds each evening.
The local area is lovely - The White Horse hill is just 15 minutes walk down the road. From the top of the hill, you can get on to the Ridgeway. A footpath along which you can reach the villages of Uffington (1.5 miles - the closest) or Woolstone (3 miles) joins one of the camping fields, and it was a delight in late July with all the crops reaching maturity. Great pubs in both - the Australian couple who are running in the pub in Uffington were brilliant, really friendly.
This is definitely a 'proper' campsite, full of character, and for anyone who wants to chill out and forget the modern world for a while, with a campfire, country walks and pubs, I would definitely recommend it. We'll certainly be going back.

Just returned from a 4 night stay. Lovely campsite in peaceful location, pitch where you like and campfires permitted are definite pros for this site. Owner very helpful and delivering logs direct to your tent is great. Depending on which field you're in, it can be a bit of a walk to the showers down the road, but signs up warning of pedestrians. Showers were hot and clean and each field has several portaloos and a water tap. The owner tries to keep an adults only field but this doesn't seem to work as lots of children in this field, and not all campers stick to the reasonable rules eg. Quiet after 10.30pm and dogs on leads. A couple of the fields on slopes but not too bad and adds to the views. Overall would recommend this site for a weekend visit.

This a fantastic small campsite that is suitable for those that want to experience true camping! A field surrounded by great countryside views, campfires allowed (they even bring fire wood round for you to buy).
The porta loos are clean so no problems there!

Just returned from a weekend stay at this site, a great site for campers but not so good for touring caravans, there are 4 camping fields with spotlessly clean portaloos, short grass and fire pits (a burnt patch of grass)
We stayed in the touring field not exactly flat we needed 2 large blocks under the back of the van and the nose on the floor, the views out of my front window was a view of an old barn and to my right the general skip for all the site waste (fly heaven). Also not a cheap site adult 6pn ,6 pounds awning, six pounds gazebo. And 6 pounds per night electric hook up (don't expect an eht bollard it`s a a 6 gang multiplug under a bucket).Very popular with new campers as it was recently featured in the guardian !
Local shop 1.5 mile away (no lottery).Cash point 5 miles
Local pub fox and hounds excellent. Good food nice people and you can take the dog in,you can also walk to the famous white horse if you feel energetic about 2 miles.
